“Wellness in Color” (https://namimn.org/category/podcast-episodes/wellness-in-color/) is a podcast series of the National Alliance of Mental Illness that explores perspectives on mental health to reshape the cultural language of mental illness. In the podcast young adults of color share their challenges and successes in mental health recovery and wellness. NAMI’s goal is “to reach collective cultural communities through positive reflections on wellness through discussions on why community members do not seek help for themselves or their loved one living with a mental illness.”

There will be a two part discussion. You can attend either of the two sessions for each part, but should attend both parts.

In the first part we will discuss three podcast episodes:

-Never Stop Watering your Roots by Lauryn David (34min)
-The Pressures of Perfection by Aneela Kumar (44min)

Also, we invite you to choose and listen to a fourth episode and do a “show and tell” during our discussion.

The deadline for submissions for the Instructional Course Design Grant has been extended to this coming Monday, 2/24, at noon.

About the ICD Grants:
-Designed to provide an opportunity for faculty to spend a significant amount of time on course design.
-The stipend amount is $2,000.

The 2020 ICD grants will prioritize course development which advances:
-The University mission of intentional commitment to diversity and creating more inclusive classroom experiences for students.
-Active and experiential learning opportunities.
-Interdisciplinary and problem-based modes of inquiry.

Proposals that clearly demonstrate the University’s mission of intentional commitment to diversity and creating inclusive classroom experiences for students may be eligible for an additional $500 ($2,500 total).

The Office of Academic Affairs and the Center for Teaching and Learning invite your nominations for the annual Distinguished Contributions to Teaching and Learning Awards. Augsburg annually recognizes individuals or groups that have made exemplary contributions to creating an engaging academic learning environment through awards for teaching, scholarship, or service. All faculty or full-time staff who have been employed at the university for at least three years are eligible for the awards.

Apply to be in one of Augsburg’s three Public Leadership Scholar Programs: Christensen Scholars, Interfaith Scholars, or Sabo Scholars.

In these programs, you will have the opportunity to participate in a yearlong academic seminar with a cohort of your peers. You will contribute to public leadership on campus and in the wider community in the Christian tradition, through interfaith engagement, or civic life. You will also be able to earn 4 upper division semester credits in the Religion or Political Science and receive a $2,000 scholarship.

Who is Eligible?
Christensen and Interfaith Scholars – Current sophomores and juniors who plan to study on campus all of the 2020-21 academic year.

Faculty, do you wish you had uninterrupted time to write/work on scholarship? If so, you will want to take advantage of the annual Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat. Jess established a tradition of allowing faculty and academic staff time away from campus to focus entirely on scholarship. There is no schedule for this retreat – it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. The Provost and the Center for Teaching and Learning will cover the cost of the retreat. We ask that you commit to being present on all three days of the event. Our time begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday and ends at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. Space is limited to full-time faculty members.

Free Trip to Holocaust Museum Through the MINNE Fellowship

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program. Five Augsburg students were selected last year for the trip.
The 2020 trip will take place on April 23rd. Applications are due on February 28th and can be found at http://jewishminneapolis.org/minne/. Queering Career Business Visit: Forensics Lab

Saturday, March 28th, join LGBTQIA+ Student Services, TriBeta, & Strommen Center for Queering Career. This site visit, we will be traveling to the Hennepin County Crime Lab.

Within Hennepin County, the laboratory provides forensic services to over 35 local law enforcement agencies, the Minnesota State Patrol, and several federal law enforcement agencies. The laboratory is staffed by licensed peace officers and civilians serving in the following specialized areas:
DNA
Crime Scene Investigation
Evidence
Latent Print (Fingerprints)
Firearm Examination

We will be touring the lab spaces and learning about each specialized area above.
Queering Career Series works to promote the visibility of local, queer-owned businesses and employees.

We will meet in the Auggies Nest at 10 am, leave no later than 10:30 am, and will be back on campus by 12:30 pm. We will travel as a group on the light rail; day students who want to attend and do not have their Auggie Passes should go to the circulation desk on the first floor of Lindell Library or contact Brittany Stokes at stokesb@augsburg.edu.

Big Gay Snow Day

In collaboration with QPA, LGBTQIA+ Student Services will be hosting a Big Gay Snow Day Friday, March 13th. It’s a day filled with snow tubing, hot cocoa, friends, and fun.
This event is taking the place of MBLGTACC – as we were not able to attend this year. So instead, this will be our Minnesota way of enjoying the outdoors, in the gayest way possible.
Post-snow-tubing, we will be coming back to watch a film and enjoy pizza.

We will meet in the Auggies Nest at 3:30 pm and leave no later than 4 pm.

Cutz 4 Queers

Join LGBTQIA+ Student Services, Monday, March 9th, 10 am to 2 pm for their upcoming scholarship fundraiser, Cutz 4 Queerz.

We will be hosting barbers & stylists from both Prohibition Barbers and Fox Den Salon; this is an open, walk-in style event. All haircuts will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis. All haircuts are free-will donation, with a suggested donation of $20. All barbers and stylists are donating their time and energy – as all proceeds made will go towards the LGBTQIA+ Student Services Scholarship, which will be awarded at Lavender Celebration, April 16th.

This event is open to all faculty, staff, students, and the community.
Cuts are available for people of all genders and hair types.

Oren Gateway Water

There were water issues in Oren Gateway on Wednesday caused by a clogged kitchen sink overflowing in a residence hall room located on the second floor. Water was turned off to the entire building for approximately one hour. Water damage was sustained in classroom OGC 114 and offices in OGC 115. The drain has been repaired and all water has been turned back on. A water cleanup vendor is onsite to complete water damage cleanup in all affected areas, this should be completed by Thursday. Any questions can be directed to Bryan Massich at 612-280-7447.

William D. Green Receives 2020 Hognander Minnesota History Award

The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library announced that Augsburg History Professor, William Green, is the winner of the 2020 Hognander Minnesota History Award for his book, “The Children of Lincoln: White Paternalism and the Limits of Black Opportunity in Minnesota, 1860-1876”.

Green will be honored at the 32nd annual Minnesota Book Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, April 28 at the Ordway Center for Performing Arts.

Blood Memory–Free Film Event

The Augsburg Native American Film Series presents Blood Memory on February 19, 2020.
The title “Blood Memory” is derived from the concept that the experiences of one generation are passed onto the next through DNA. Future generations live with the shared knowledge of their ancestors – meaning there is a foundation of survival instinct and cultural identity that exists within us prior to learned experience. In many ways, this is a beautiful and poetic concept, but trauma and abuse can also be transferred intergenerationally, sometimes unknown to the carrier. This film is about acknowledging and honoring all aspects of blood memory, and how we as individuals and community members heal our collective traumas and learn to pass positive ancestral knowledge to the next generation–Director’s Statement (Blood Memory, Official Film Site)
Blood Memory, a true life “dark-horse political thriller”, tells Sandy White Hawk’s story of adoption out of her home community at a young age and her work to help the “stolen generation” of the American Indian Adoption Era return home. Intertwined with her saga is that of Mark Fiddler, an ICWA lawyer whose advocacy as co-council in Adoptive Couple vs. Baby Girl 2013 helped to dismantle the law he once fought to protect (Vision Maker Media). Join Sandy White Hawk for an evening of screening the film and discussion.

Kathy McGillivray, Director of the CLASS/Disability Resources office, will discuss mindsets and strategies that can move us beyond accessibility toward welcome and inclusion of our students with disabilities. She will highlight some of the recurring themes the CLASS office has heard from students about approaches faculty have taken that have helped them feel valued and motivated them to succeed.

Campus Kitchen will and has continued to table with free produce in Christensen Center Lobby in efforts to increase free, healthy and accessible food options. Similar to last semester this will be held weekly on Mondays 2pm-4pm. All we need from you (before you take your items) is your Augsburg ID and the total weight of the items you’re taking.

We also know that there might be confusion on when Augsburg Staff/Faculty are allowed to grab produce. Just for clarification, we welcome and encourage any Augsburg Staff/Faculty to come grab free produce after 3pm.

Oren Gateway Access

Access into Oren Gateway Center from street-level doors was not available Tuesday due to a power supply failure in the fob reader, which caused the doors to remain locked. Accessibility paddle access also was not functioning during this time. A new power supply unit was ordered and installed by early afternoon. All door functions are now back to normal operation.

Blood Memory

The Augsburg Native American Film Series presents Blood Memory on February 19, 2020.
The title “Blood Memory” is derived from the concept that the experiences of one generation are passed onto the next through DNA. Future generations live with the shared knowledge of their ancestors – meaning there is a foundation of survival instinct and cultural identity that exists within us prior to learned experience. In many ways, this is a beautiful and poetic concept, but trauma and abuse can also be transferred intergenerationally, sometimes unknown to the carrier. This film is about acknowledging and honoring all aspects of blood memory, and how we as individuals and community members heal our collective traumas and learn to pass positive ancestral knowledge to the next generation–Director’s Statement (Blood Memory, Official Film Site)
Blood Memory, a true life “dark-horse political thriller”, tells Sandy White Hawk’s story of adoption out of her home community at a young age and her work to help the “stolen generation” of the American Indian Adoption Era return home. Intertwined with her saga is that of Mark Fiddler, an ICWA lawyer whose advocacy as co-council in Adoptive Couple vs. Baby Girl 2013 helped to dismantle the law he once fought to protect (Vision Maker Media). Join Sandy White Hawk for an evening of screening the film and discussion.

Free Trip to Holocaust Museum Through the MINNE Fellowship

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. 1. We will review the current set of graduate program learning outcomes for each program and discuss:
a. the ways in which graduate level learning outcomes map to the mission

2. We will identify if there are graduate level learning outcomes that are ‘shared’ by all graduate programs. Can we call them out explicitly as part of our commitment to graduate students at Augsburg?

A new, streamlined set of General Education Learning Outcomes (GELOs) is needed to better understand students’ learning experience in courses in the General Education curriculum. During this session we will review the proposed learning outcomes and examine how they relate to institutional outcomes. We will discuss how the proposed GELOs can accommodate the current curriculum, and yet be flexible to proposed curricular changes. This workshop will offer faculty and staff an opportunity to comment on the proposed outcomes, and help develop preliminary plans for how and where these outcomes can be assessed.

ABOUT “TIENDA”
The opera tells the story of Luis Garzón, a Mexican musician who immigrated to Minneapolis in 1886 and opened a small Mexican grocery store, or tienda, in St. Paul in the 1920s. While Luis had married an American woman and was fully integrated into Minnesotan society, his store served as a community hub for the newest arrivals from Mexico, many of whom had fled the Mexican Revolution and now toiled on the sugar beet farms of rural Minnesota. “Tienda” explores the immigrant experience: what must be left behind—and what cannot be forgotten—on the journey to a new home.

The opera is composed by Augsburg Music faculty member Reinaldo Moya and will also include the Augsburg Orchestra & The Augsburg Choir.

Looking for funding for sustainability-related course development, conference travel, research, internships, or other ideas? The College Sustainability grant we received is in its last year of funding, and the grant team is requesting all proposals for funding be made by February 26 in order to prioritize spending for the spring and summer. Remember that we think about sustainability broadly – environmental, economic, social, and personal wellness – on our campus, in our neighboring community, and among our institutional partners. It includes stewarding a culture of sustainability alongside of our most precious resources – Air, Land, Water, Built Environment, People, Food, and Energy.

Funding is available for:

Free Weekly Produce Distribution

Campus Kitchen will and has continued to table with free produce in Christensen Center Lobby in efforts to increase free, healthy and accessible food options. Similar to last semester this will be held weekly on Mondays 2pm-4pm. All we need from you (before you take your items) is your Augsburg ID and the total weight of the items you’re taking (which can all be taken at the end of your shopping).

We also know that there might be confusion on when Augsburg Staff/Faculty are allowed to grab produce. Just for clarification, we welcome and encourage any Augsburg Staff/Faculty to come grab free produce after 3pm.

ABOUT “TIENDA”
The opera tells the story of Luis Garzón, a Mexican musician who immigrated to Minneapolis in 1886 and opened a small Mexican grocery store, or tienda, in St. Paul in the 1920s. While Luis had married an American woman and was fully integrated into Minnesotan society, his store served as a community hub for the newest arrivals from Mexico, many of whom had fled the Mexican Revolution and now toiled on the sugar beet farms of rural Minnesota. “Tienda” explores the immigrant experience: what must be left behind—and what cannot be forgotten—on the journey to a new home.

The opera is composed by Augsburg Music faculty member Reinaldo Moya and will also include the Augsburg Orchestra & The Augsburg Choir.

Lot D and Admission Event Today (Feb. 17)

The Admission Office is excited to host “Experience Augsburg” on Monday, February 17th. Our visitors will have 75 spaces marked off for them in Lot D; once the remaining spots are filled, we ask that faculty and staff park in Lot L, Lot J, or in the 21st Ave Parking Ramp across Riverside (free day permits are available in the Admission Office). In addition, the Admission Office is providing Metro passes for those who wish to park further away and commute to campus using bus or light rail. Please feel free to swing through the Admission Office (LL of Christensen) to pick up your ramp pass or Metro Pass.

Augsburg’s annual Zyzzogeton Research Symposium showcases the work of over 80 undergraduate researchers in all academic disciplines and will take place on April 14th. Students who have conducted research over the course of the last year and would like to present a poster should register at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) by March 2nd (a mentor-approved abstract is required to register).

Free Trip to Holocaust Museum Through the MINNE Fellowship

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program. Five Augsburg students were selected last year for the trip.
The 2020 trip will take place on April 23rd. Applications are due on February 28th and can be found at http://jewishminneapolis.org/minne/. Dietary Restrictions are some of the things that make it hard to get food on campus, but thankfully Allyson Green, Augsburg Chief of Sustainability, (who also has dietary restrictions) has taken up baking cookie that are gluten-free and vegan! Join us on February 17th, 4pm-6pm at Hagfors108, to experiment baking with Gluten-Free and Vegan recipes.

Here we’ll engage in the fun and learning of baking gluten-free and vegan cookies! Take these recipe’s home with you to your family and friends who have these dietary restrictions.

Subscriptions range from $3 to $20. Your subscription will help bring fresh produce to corner stores in the Cedar Riverside area. We will be continuing our partnership with BrightSide Produce this semester.

If you are interested in being a part of Augsburg’s Buyer Club please follow the step by step instructions below.

“Wellness in Color” Podcast Series Discussion Group

“Wellness in Color” is a podcast series of the National Alliance of Mental Illness that explores perspectives on mental health to reshape the cultural language of mental illness. In the podcast young adults of color share their challenges and successes in mental health recovery and wellness. NAMI’s goal is “to reach collective cultural communities through positive reflections on wellness through discussions on why community members do not seek help for themselves or their loved one living with a mental illness.”

There will be a two part discussion. You can attend either of the two sessions for each part, but should attend both parts.

Monday, February 17th, we will visit Jackalope Tattoo.

Jackalope Tattoo is a non-binary POC owned. It is home to nine talented female and non-binary identifying tattoo artists located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, who specialize in custom tattoo designs. We have a mission to create a safe space for the LGBTQIA+ community, POC, and women. Find out more about Jackalope Tattoo here.

The Office of Grants & Sponsored Programs is hosting an event series to support ongoing grant proposal development among faculty and staff. The next session is Wednesday, February 26 (3:30 – 5pm) in Lindell 301. 

The topic is Funding Searches & Small Grants. Mary Hollerich of Lindell Library will discuss how to conduct funding searches for grants, and how the Library can help during the lifecycle of your grant. OGSP will give numerous examples of small grants across the disciplines. Twenty minutes will be reserved at the end for writing, consultations, and planning.
