What is IoT? IoT, or Internet of Things, is a network of physical devices embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and connectivity that enables these devices to connect and exchange data. These physical devices can be everything from cell phones, coffee makers, washing machines, Bluetooth headphones, lamps, wearable devices and almost anything else you can think of.
Based in Minneapolis, IoT Fuse is a a robust community of IoT practitioners, developers and makers who strive to build a deeper understanding of where the Internet of Things is today, where it is headed in the future, and how IoT associated technologies and use cases can be used to improve the physical world in which we live.
The IoT Fuse: Conference is an event that features a variety of exhibits, speakers and interesting sessions, with the aim of “fusing together” both engineers, developers and the technical crowd, with the marketing, business, finance and art crowd. This one of a kind event draws people from all over the country.
The 2018 IoTFuse: Conference will be held on Thursday, May 3rd, 2018 at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

The working group on the University Course Survey revision continues its efforts this spring. We recommend that all faculty to take 15 minutes of class time (as was done with paper and pencil forms) and allow the students to complete the current form on their laptops, phones, or computer lab. Faculty should be absent from the room during this time. It is helpful to tell the students prior to the class session so that they bring their devices and taking the 15 minutes at the beginning of a class session. All evidence indicates that this process will bring the response rates that are of faculty concern to response levels that are reliable and useful.
Also, the new form is being piloted this spring with approximately 30 faculty and thus several hundred students across disciplines and types of courses. The proposed form is designed to assess student perceptions of the quality of their learning experiences in courses and does not directly measure teaching effectiveness or student learning. Those important aspects are better measured in other ways.
Data from the pilot will be presented to the faculty in September. If any additional faculty would like to pilot the new form in summer school courses, please contact group co-leader, Scott Krajewski krajewsk@augsburg.edu by June 8.

Located on 50 scenic acres of national park in Marine on Saint Croix, Dunrovin’s beautiful wooded grounds are a peaceful, yet professional, setting for group meetings, private getaways, youth or adult groups, and day or overnight retreats.
Do you wish you had uninterrupted time to write / work on scholarship? If so, you will want to take advantage of the annual Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat. Jess established a tradition of allowing faculty and academic staff time away from campus to focus entirely on scholarship. There is no schedule for this retreat – it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. The Provost and the Center for Teaching and Learning will cover the cost of the retreat. We ask that you commit to being present on all three days of the event. Our time begins at 1:00 pm on Wednesday and ends at 1:00 pm on Friday. Space is limited to full-time faculty members.

Applying to graduate school this fall or fall 2019? Most masters and doctoral programs, as well as some health professional schools, require the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) for admission. GRE Prep is offered this summer on campus through the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity. You’ll learn the most effective ways tackle the Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing sections on the GRE.
The course meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30-8 PM for four and a half weeks (May 14th – June 18th). The cost is only $125, which includes the official GRE test-prep book and a 6-month subscription to the online study tool, Magoosh; this is a fraction of the cost when compared to similar classroom GRE prep courses offered by Kaplan or the Princeton Review who charge over $1,000.
New this year, students can also earn a full-refund scholarship! Those who attend 9 of the 10 classes (including the final practice test), will receive a full refund for the course!

Congratulations to Dr. Lamont Slater on completing his Ph.D. in History!
On April 6th, Lamont successfully defended his dissertation, “Reframing the Herero/Nama Genocide: An Examination of the Genocide Through the Theories of Foucault and Athens” at Salve Regina University in Rhode Island.
Dr. Lamont Slater is an instructor and program coordinator at Augsburg CGEE’s Study Center in Namibia and teaches the course “The Politics of Development in Southern Africa.” He joined Augsburg CGEE in 2016.

Augsburg TriBeta and EAC have teamed up to present the first-ever “Garbage Gala”! The event will take place at 6:00pm on April 19th (TONIGHT) in the East Commons in Christensen Center. The Garbage Gala will include a Vegetarian buffet (FREE) and will feature a few panelists from Hennepin County, a Zero-waste consulting company, and Allyson Green. We will have a demonstration to show which items are compostable, which are recyclable, and what should be “trashed” as well as prizes!

This free event will showcase original student filmmaking by artists from Augsburg and surrounding colleges. The event will be held in Augsburg’s Sateren Auditorium on April 21, and will feature a screening of selected films (roughly 1 hour), followed by a Q&A and an award ceremony. Doors open at 6:30pm and the screening will begin at 7:00pm. Free popcorn and snacks will also be provided.

7 Augsburg seniors were named Fulbright Semi-Finalists this year! 5 were granted an award and 1 named an Alternate.
Kaylee Gueltzow (English Secondary Education & German): Kaylee will be an ETA in Germany where she also plans to organize a book club to spark conversation about the U.S.
Lyle Nyberg (Biology, Chemistry, & Mathematics): Lyle was named an Alternate to Zambia. Lyle applied to do research on malaria transmission at the Southern and Central Africa International Center of Excellence for Malaria Research.
Maddy Oswood (Spanish & Mathematics): Maddy will be an ETA in Spain where she also hopes to start an after-school art club where students can learn about both American and Spanish art.
Jubilee Prosser (Biology): Jubilee will be conducting public health research investigating the barriers to a sense of ownership of at-home water purification technologies in Kenya. She also plans to volunteer at the Maua Methodist Hospital in hygiene and water education for kids.
Blair Stewig (Biology): Blair will be conducting research on colorectal cancer at the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Poland and will also shadow physicians and volunteer at the Maria Skłodowska Curie Memorial Cancer Centre.
Abby Tetzlaff (English): Abby will be an ETA in Germany. She currently teaches an English Language Learning class with MN Literacy Council’s Open Door, and in Germany she hopes to initiate an English-language conversation table open to older students and adults.
Jossel Franco (History): Jossel was named a Semi-Finalist for an ETA to Bulgaria. Though she will not be doing a Fulbright, Jossel received the Puente Cultural Services and Teaching Abroad Grant to teach English in Ecuador. She will be doing TEFL training, working at the CEDEI language institute, and volunteering as an English tutor.

As we approach the end of the term, ensuring the accuracy of your Moodle Gradebook becomes even more important than usual. Please be advised that by default, only non-empty grades in the Moodle Gradebook are aggregated, so if a student hasn’t submit work, entering a zero (or other minimum score) will ensure their missing work is reflected in their course total. If students have not submitted an assignment, instructors need to insert a 0 (rather than leaving the place blank) to affect the final grade. Congratulations on a challenge well-played, Augsburg Faculty and Staff! Last month, in an annual event, Augsburg’s faculty and staff took on the University of St. Thomas’s faculty and staff in a fun rivalry for the most physical fitness points. The challenge ran during the 4 weeks in March and Augsburg won 3 out of the 4 weeks. Way to go, Auggies!

University Council staff representative Jim Trelstad-Porter has accepted an invitation to extend his term of service by one year. Trelstad-Porter, a member of the University Council’s inaugural advisory team, will continue to represent staff in the internal deliberation of university-wide decisions and to advise President Pribbenow. Elections for the next staff representative on University Council will be held in spring 2019.

Applications are now open for the 2018-19 AugSTEM Scholars Program.
The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, AugSTEM Scholars receive scholarships of $5,000, $7,500 and $10,000 per student per year (differences in award amounts correspond to levels of financial need). Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.
Eligibility:
-Enrolled full-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, chemistry, computer science,
environmental studies, mathematics, or physics)
-Within 5 semesters of graduating as of Fall 2018
-Major GPA of 3.0 or higher

Judge Spanish Debate – No Prior Experience Needed
The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a nonprofit of Augsburg University. We provide debate programming to over 750 students in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, including our nearly 100 Spanish Debate League students.
We are paying student judges $55 for those who judge all three rounds at a tournament. We’re looking for debate judges for 3 tournaments this spring, with maximum earning potential of $165:
Wednesday April 18th – 3:30 to 7:30 PM
Wednesday May 2nd – 3:30 to 7:30 PM
Wednesday May 16th – 3:30 to 7:30 PM
Judges will observe rounds conducted completely in Spanish, determine winners for each round, and provide comments to help students improve their reading, critical thinking and Spanish language skills.
Participation in debate helps students improve their academic skills, including reading comprehension and critical thinking, and increases their confidence. Be a part of creating these outcomes for our Spanish Debate League students!

Augsburg TriBeta and EAC have teamed up to present the first-ever “Garbage Gala”! The event will take place at 6:00pm on April 19th in the East Commons in Christensen Center. The Garbage Gala will include a Vegetarian buffet (FREE) and will feature a few panelists from Hennepin County, a Zero-waste consulting company, and Allyson Green. We will have a demonstration to show which items are compostable, which are recyclable, and what should be “trashed” as well as prizes!

What is in the air we breathe? The atmosphere is composed of gases such as oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide. Other gases are present at much lower concentrations and include ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and formaldehyde just to name a few. Besides these gases, there is something else in the air we breathe, tiny microscopic particles called aerosols. Not just the aerosol that comes from spray cans that you are all probably familiar with but this talk will focus on any liquid or solid particles that is suspended in the air, which is the definition of an aerosol. These tiny particles come from many sources and can impact the Earth’s climate and human health in ways we are just starting to understand.

Ron Blankenship, Director, Adult Undergraduate Program at Augsburg University and Derrick Lindstrom, Dean, School of Liberal Arts & Cultures at Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) presented at the HLC conference in Chicago on April 9th, 2018. Dr. Nancy Steblay’s article “The Post-Identification Feedback Effect 15 Years Later: Theoretical and Policy Implications” was one of the most frequently downloaded papers from the journal Psychology, Public Policy, and Law in 2017, as reported by the American Psychological Association – the largest scientific and professional organization of psychologists in the United States. Dr. Steblay’s coauthors on the paper are Dr. Gary L.Wells (Iowa State) and Dr. Amy Douglass (Bates College). This further underscores Dr. Steblay’s prolific and productive scientific contributions that have informed good policy practices. Congratulations!

A “zyzzogeton” is a green leaf-hopper as well as the last word in the Webster Collegiate Dictionary, which is a fitting symbol to mark the end of the academic year. What is IoT? IoT, or Internet of Things, is a network of physical devices embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and connectivity that enables these devices to connect and exchange data. These physical devices can be everything from cell phones, coffee makers, washing machines, Bluetooth headphones, lamps, wearable devices and almost anything else you can think of.
Based in Minneapolis, IoT Fuse is a a robust community of IoT practitioners, developers and makers who strive to build a deeper understanding of where the Internet of Things is today, where it is headed in the future, and how IoT associated technologies and use cases can be used to improve the physical world in which we live.
The IoT Fuse: Conference is an event that features a variety of exhibits, speakers and interesting sessions, with the aim of “fusing together” both engineers, developers and the technical crowd, with the marketing, business, finance and art crowd. This one of a kind event draws people from all over the country.
The 2018 IoTFuse: Conference will be held on Thursday, May 3rd, 2018 at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

This project will take place in Augsburg University – Murphy’s Square.
Augsburg Latin American Students (ALAS) will sign up Augsburg Students and Staff to engage in contamination clean up. The project consist in clean up trash/litter or any other physical contamination from Murphy’s Square and the surroundings. We will set up teams to go around campus and clean up after the snow has melted down. Our goals: Create environmental conscience, have a Cleaner Campus, Improve animal life, Inspire others to do the same, and Educate participants on the difference between Trash, Recycling, and Compost.
PARTICIPANTS WILL GET A T-SHIRT, A WATER BOTTLE, AND CHIPOTLE!

This spider plant will bounce back with plenty of sunlight and and some water. These are excellent plants for clearing toxins from the air. My office does not receive enough light to keep it healthy.
It comes in a hot pink pot. You are also welcome to its two friends (other types of plants) who are otherwise headed to a compost bin.

Are you required to attend all the CTL events in May? Absolutely not!
Should you attend some? Absolutely!…and we agree with Provost Kaivola that picking 3 is a reasonable expectation.
The CTL Fellows have worked hard to offer sessions requested and designed by faculty and staff in a new format (4-Days in May v. “the May calendar”). The offerings are varied, designed to help with the pressing needs of the day, and have have been built around the goal of community building.

You Can Help Prevent Crime at Augsburg!
-Trust Your Instincts – If you sense trouble, get away
-Be Observant and Aware – Remain alert, be aware of your surroundings, observe the other people around you. Know who is around you. Be alert for suspicious behavior (e.g. a person wearing a long coat in the middle of summer).
-Walk Confidently and Do Not Make Yourself a Target – Robbers are looking for an easy target. Keep your head up and eyes alert and walk at a steady pace. Do not walk while looking at your phone and avoid carrying lots of packages or other belongings. Walk in groups whenever possible.
-If You are Robbed – Do your best to stay calm and remember: safety first! Follow the robber’s directions, but do not volunteer more than asked for. If you have to move, tell the robber what you are doing and why. Try to get a good look at the robber so you can describe them later. Give the robber time to leave and note the direction they travel.
-After a Robbery – CALL DPS OR THE POLICE IMMEDIATELY. Try to recall as much as you can about the robber including physical description, clothing, speech and mannerisms.
-Notify DPS of any concerning or suspicious activity immediately.

Robbery
April 11, 2018
In compliance with the “Timely Notice” provision of the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1998 Augsburg University Department of Public Safety is giving notice of a concerning incident that occurred inside Anderson Hall on the Minneapolis Campus.
REPORTED OFFENSE: Robbery
Today, 4/11/2018, DPS received a report that on Monday, April 9, 2018 around 11:30 pm, a robbery occurred inside an Anderson Hall apartment. A student was attempting to sell clothing online and had the potential buyers meet at their apartment. The victim met 2 males at the North entrance to Anderson Hall and escorted them to their room. When the clothing item was shown to the potential buyers they hit the victim in the head and pointed a handgun at them. The suspects then took the clothing item and ran out the North entrance of Anderson Hall. The suspects then got into a dark colored 4 door sedan parked on 21st Ave S (north of 7th St) and left Northbound on 21st Ave S.

When selling anything online:
DO NOT meet at your residence or the buyer’s residence; choose a neutral location in a public area that is well lit.
If possible, bring a friend with you to the sale; if not, make sure to let someone know where the meeting is taking place, when you are leaving, and when you expect to be back.
STATUS: We believe this to be an isolated incident, and it remains under investigation by the Minneapolis Police Department and the Augsburg College Department of Public Safety. Anyone who may have information regarding this incident is urged to contact MPD or Augsburg DPS at 612-330-1717.

Judge Spanish Debate – No Prior Experience Needed!
The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a nonprofit of Augsburg University. We provide debate programming to over 750 students in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, including our nearly 100 Spanish Debate League students.
We’re looking for debate judges for 3 tournaments this spring:
Wednesday April 18th – 3:30 to 7:30 PM
Wednesday May 2nd – 3:30 to 7:30 PM
Wednesday May 16th – 3:30 to 7:30 PM
Judges will observe rounds conducted completely in Spanish, determine winners for each round, and provide comments to help students improve their reading, critical thinking and Spanish language skills.
Participation in debate helps students improve their academic skills, including reading comprehension and critical thinking, and increases their confidence. Be a part of creating these outcomes for our Spanish Debate League students!

The Sesquicentennial Academic Sub-Committee is looking for project ideas and project leaders that will make the celebration of our Sesquicentennial year a special year for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of Augsburg. Funds are available for evocative projects of all kinds that reflect Augsburg’s mission, academic excellence and community. The 150th anniversary will be celebrated between Homecoming 2019 and Homecoming 2020. Our aim is to have all Sesquicentennial projects identified by Spring 2018.

Almost fifty years ago, following the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Augsburg canceled class on May 15, 1968 for a day of listening and discussion that focused on racism in Minneapolis and beyond. Leaders from Minnesota’s black community delivered speeches about how racism intersected with economics, education, police brutality, politics, residential segregation, sex, and more.
The Augsburg audiovisual department recorded each session, and thirteen of the original recordings have been digitized by Lindell Library’s Digitization Lab to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Pan-Afrikan Student Union (PASU). PASU began as a consequence of the discussions that took place on “One Day in May” and will be celebrating its 50th anniversary later this week.

Zyzzogeton Research Symposium

Augsburg University celebrates the creativity and scholarship of undergraduate students with its annual Zyzzogeton festival. The festival falls at the end of each academic year and is a culmination of achievement featuring work across departments. Over 70 students participate each year, showcasing their research. A “zyzzogeton” is a green leaf-hopper as well as the last word in the Webster Collegiate Dictionary, which is a fitting symbol to mark the end of the academic year. The public is welcome, so please come join us for this exciting event!
