Honduran LGBTQ and Indigenous Human Rights Speaker, Nov. 1st.

Gaspar Sánchez, Honduran human rights defender and sexual diversity coordinator at COPINH (Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous People Organizations of Honduras), will be on campus on Wed., Nov. 1st.

Uniting to resist attacks on our Land and Identities: Building on the Queer Indigenous Framework in the Americas.

Gaspar will present on how the struggle for LGBTQ awareness and rights among Indigenous communities plays a vital role in both land defense and in the dismantling of patriarchal and militaristic structures. Gaspar will also discuss what you can do in solidarity with COPINH and others facing repression in Honduras, including supporting the Berta Cáceres Human Rights in Honduras Act (HR1299). (This presentation will be translated into English.)

“Join the Augsburg Men’s and Women’s hockey teams and the Physician Assistant Studies program for their Animals for Smiles event! This is a stuffed animal toss benefiting Children’s Minnesota in appreciation for hosting PA students during their clinical rotations. Animals will be given out to Children’s patients. The toss will take place during both home hockey games against Bethel University on November 10th and 11th at 7:00 pm. Stuffed animals will be tossed onto the ice following the first period. Please bring a new stuffed animal, preferably wrapped or bagged so it will stay clean during the toss. Supplies will also be available to wrap toys before entering rink,

If you haven’t already visited the Writing Lab, it’s probably time to do so! More than 360 Auggies have already used the WL this semester. Writing Lab tutors await all students, grad and undergrad, and their written work – essays, applications, personal statements, creative writing. The Lab is located on the street level of Lindell Library and is just left of the circulation desk. No appointments are taken.

Native American Film Series: INAATE/Se

This experimental documentary by Zack and Adam Khalil explores the Ojibwe story of the Seven Fires Prophecy, which has been interpreted as predicting the arrival of the Europeans in North America and the subsequent destruction they caused. Bold, smart, and unflinching, the film examines the relationship between cultural tradition and modern indigenous identity.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is searching for debate judges for high school debate tournaments this fall. Judges will watch high school debate rounds and evaluate teams on logic, effective argumentation, and speaking skills. The judge picks a winner, assigns speaking points to individual students, and provides written feedback on their decision. No experience? No worries. We will train you. Judges will also enjoy free pizza at this great service learning opportunity!

Please join the Augsburg community in congratulating Kathy McBride on her 30 years of service to Augsburg University! Kathy is the Regional Co-Director of the Central America program for the Center for Global Education and Experience, and she will be retiring at the end of 2017.

In her time with Augsburg, Kathy has taught countless students from Augsburg and around the country on the Central America semester program as well as individuals learning about the region via short-term educational seminars. Kathy has lead with a critical eye and a generous heart, always holding her students and Augsburg to the highest standard. Kathy is a caring colleague whose impact on Augsburg and its legacy is far reaching. In addition to her service to Augsburg, all four of her children attended Augsburg, and two of them married fellow Auggies!

Kathy will be on campus October 23-27, so we will celebrate her in person! Students, staff, faculty and administrators are all welcome.

River Semester Information Session TODAY

Join us today from 5:00-7:00 in Oren Gateway Center 100 for pizza and conversation about plans for the next River Semester, which will launch on Aug. 20, 2018. Students will spend 100 days paddling the Mississippi River, hearing from local experts and meeting residents all along the way. This unique semester program includes 16 credits of courses in Environmental Studies, Political Science, Biology, an integrative independent study project, and other custom courses. In 2018 the River Semester will also partner with the Bancroft-Arnesen Expedition’s Access Water trip down the Mississippi, and students will participate in the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Forum with an international contingent of water experts joining part of the river trip. Applications are now being accepted with a $500 discount on applications approved before Dec. 15th.

Indigenous Social Activism in Chiapas | Spring-Break Abroad

On the spring break program, Indigenous Social Activism in Chiapas, Mexico, you will meet with and learn about various Indigenous people’s approaches to social activism, learn about Indigenous cosmology and spirituality, Indigenous sovereignty or autonomy, and Indigenous cooperative/businesses and educational systems.

You can choose one 4-credit course to take on this program:
AIS 305 – Indigenous Issues of the Americas (elective course)
AIS 490 – Indigenous Issues of the Americas (Keystone course)
CCS 295 – Topics: Global Crossroads & Indigenous Resistance in Chiapas, Mexico (meets requirement for CCS major of one travel seminar and an elective, OR general elective for non-majors)
SPA 495 – Topics: Global Crossroads & Indigenous Resistance in Chiapas, Mexico (meets requirement for one culture class or one elective (for the SPA major or minor))

This program also fulfills the Augsburg Experience requirement!

These programs offer courses great for many students including general graduation requirements, courses for some majors, internship options, and a personalized, experiential learning environment. Join other Auggies, as well as students from around the US, for an unforgettable and meaningful semester.

Auggies can use their full financial aid, and automatically receive an additional $1500 Global Scholarship for these programs. Additional scholarships are available, sometimes making it less expensive to study abroad than to study and live on campus!

URGO Research and Travel Grants Available

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO) offers $1,000 Academic-Year Research Grants to fund 100 hours of student research. Students who are interested in conducting research during the year are encouraged to seek out ongoing faculty research projects that they may join.

URGO also offers Conference Travel Grants of up to $850 for students who have been accepted to present their research at a professional conference.
Both applications can be found on the URGO website. The funds may be used at any time during the academic year, however the grants are given out on a rolling basis, so we recommend interested students apply in the fall.

Do you think you don’t have time to exercise? Think again. Walking is one of the best forms of physical activity and it fits easily into most lifestyles. Get laced up and ready to hit the road, the street, or the hallways while walking your way to improved health. The MŌVEmber Steps Challenge will help you get out of your seat and get moving as you increase your daily step count. So are you ready to walk your way to better health?

The challenge will run from November 1st through November 29th.

What: Steps Challenge, with a goal of 10,000 steps per day!

October is Cyber Security Month – Google Drive email notification info

October is Cyber Security Month. Come to an information session to hear briefly what the current cyber threats are, learn some tips that apply at work or home, share your experiences and strategies.

Also in December IT is adding new tool to Google Drive to protect regulated data. If faculty or staff have regulated data in Drive you will get an email notification. What is regulated data? Come and find out! Adding this tools means we will not dissuade you from keeping FERPA data in Google Drive in 2018. We want to you to be able to fully use Google Drive in your work.

There will also be a required online self-paced information security training coming for faculty and staff as part of our work on information security. Come and find out more!

Theater Department: Accepting Donations for Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief Effort

The Theater Department is gathering donations for La Coalición de Boricuas en Minnesota (Coalition of Puerto Ricans in MN) to contribute to the Puerto Rico hurricane relief effort. Please consider a donation today.

Almost a month has passed since Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, but, because of slow and inadequate response, residents still have limited or no access to basic necessities, including food, medicine, and drinkable water.

You can bring your donations to the Campus Ministry Office in the Foss Building between 9:00a and 5:00p, Monday through Friday. We will take care of bringing everything to one of the drop-off sites.

La Coalición de Boricuas en Minnesota is asking for the following:

Parking Lot Closures this weekend:

This weekend beginning on Thursday night 10/26/2017 at 11:59pm, Lot K will be closed for events happening in the lot. There will be no vehicle access to this space. Please plan accordingly.

From Friday night 10/27/2017 at 11:59pm, Lots A, D, C, and J will be closed. These lots are also reserved for event use this weekend. Limited access to this space will be for authorized event vehicles only. Please plan accordingly.

For this weekend, during the above stated times, regardless of what your parking permit states, you may park in lots B, L, M, and O, or find any available city street parking. It is always a good idea to look into carpooling or metro transit for alternative options as the volume of cars will be increased significantly. Again, please plan accordingly.

We will re-open the lots for normal use which will correspond with your designated permit lot assignments on Sunday, 10/29/2017 at 5:00pm.

Come join URGO and Study Abroad/Study Away to learn about this spectacular opportunity for students to not only receive funding for study abroad and learn a less commonly taught language, but to start a career working on important national and international issues after graduation!

Boren Awards provide funding to U.S. undergraduate students (first years through seniors) to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad: Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America and Middle East.

In exchange for the funding awardees work one year at a federal agency around issues of national security defined very broadly, such as sustainable development, environment, disease, migration and economic competitiveness as well as more traditional security concerns.

Awardees (who must be U.S. citizens) can be given up to:
$20,000/Academic year study abroad
$10,000/Semester study abroad
$8,000/Summer study abroad (only for STEM students)

Competitive applicants will generally have a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

All Saints Day celebrates the baptized people of God, living and dead, who make up the body of Christ. Gaspar Sánchez, Honduran human rights defender and sexual diversity coordinator at COPINH (Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous People Organizations of Honduras), will be on campus on Wed., Nov. 1st.

Uniting to resist attacks on our Land and Identities: Building on the Queer Indigenous Framework in the Americas.

Gaspar will present on how the struggle for LGBTQ awareness and rights among Indigenous communities plays a vital role in both land defense and in the dismantling of patriarchal and militaristic structures. Gaspar will also discuss what you can do in solidarity with COPINH and others facing repression in Honduras, including supporting the Berta Cáceres Human Rights in Honduras Act (HR1299). (This presentation will be translated into English.)

Writing Lab tutors await all students, grad and undergrad, and their written work – essays, applications, personal statements, creative writing. River Semester Information Session Tomorrow

Join us from 5:00-7:00 on Wed., October 25th in Oren Gateway Center 100 for pizza and conversation about plans for the next River Semester, which will launch on Aug. 20, 2018. Students will spend 100 days paddling the Mississippi River, hearing from local experts and meeting residents all along the way. This unique semester program includes 16 credits of courses in Environmental Studies, Political Science, Biology, an integrative independent study project, and other custom courses. In 2018 the River Semester will also partner with the Bancroft-Arnesen Expedition’s Access Water trip down the Mississippi, and students will participate in the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Forum with an international contingent of water experts joining part of the river trip. Applications are now being accepted with a $500 discount on applications approved before Dec. 15th.

Judges will also enjoy free pizza at this great service learning opportunity!

lease join the Augsburg community in congratulating Kathy McBride on her 30 years of service to Augsburg University! Kathy is the Regional Co-Director of the Central America program for the Center for Global Education and Experience, and she will be retiring at the end of 2017.

In her time with Augsburg, Kathy has taught countless students from Augsburg and around the country on the Central America semester program as well as individuals learning about the region via short-term educational seminars. Kathy has lead with a critical eye and a generous heart, always holding her students and Augsburg to the highest standard. Kathy is a caring colleague whose impact on Augsburg and its legacy is far reaching. In addition to her service to Augsburg, all four of her children attended Augsburg, and two of them married fellow Auggies!

Kathy will be on campus October 23-27, so we will celebrate her in person! Students, staff, faculty and administrators are all welcome.

Indigenous Social Activism in Chiapas | Spring-Break Abroad Study in Mexico on Spring Break

On the spring break program, Indigenous Social Activism in Chiapas, Mexico, you will meet with and learn about various Indigenous people’s approaches to social activism, learn about Indigenous cosmology and spirituality, Indigenous sovereignty or autonomy, and Indigenous cooperative/businesses and educational systems.

You can choose one 4-credit course to take on this program:
AIS 305 – Indigenous Issues of the Americas (elective course)
AIS 490 – Indigenous Issues of the Americas (Keystone course)
CCS 295 – Topics: Global Crossroads & Indigenous Resistance in Chiapas, Mexico (meets requirement for CCS major of one travel seminar and an elective, OR general elective for non-majors)

Applications are now being accepted for delegates for the 2018 National Model UN Conference in New York City. Augsburg University will send a delegation of 16 students representing Colombia to this year’s conference, which will take place March 19 – 26th, 2018.

This is a 4-credit Spring Semester course, and students accepted into the program need to enroll in POL 368 (or a POL 499 independent study) and pay a $500 program fee, which covers travel, conference registration, and hotel costs for the week in New York. Enrollment limited to 16 students and priority deadline for applying is Nov. 13.

This program also fulfills the Augsburg Experience requirement!

These programs offer courses great for many students including general graduation requirements, courses for some majors, internship options, and a personalized, experiential learning environment. Join other Auggies, as well as students from around the US, for an unforgettable and meaningful semester.

Auggies can use their full financial aid, and automatically receive an additional $1500 Global Scholarship for these programs. Additional scholarships are available, sometimes making it less expensive to study abroad than to study and live on campus!

TODAY- Heritage Day with Mary Lowe

On Tuesday, October 24, as part of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation series, we are excited to have Mary Lowe, associate professor of Religion at Augsburg University, lecture on: Martin Luther on the Body, Our Bodies, and the Body of Creation.

Martin Luther wrote, “There are three elements in a human, the body, the soul, and the spirit.” Many of today’s complex issues involve our bodies and the body of creation: climate change, gender and sexuality, abuse, and deforestation, etc.

Professor Lowe will introduce Luther’s perspectives on bodies and creation and examine how—even today—his theology can help us better understand and address these embodied challenges.

This event is free and open to the public, and will take place in Hoversten Chapel from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm and will include a discussion and a reception.

Cheyenne Kelly-Moll is speech finalist

Congratulations to Cheyenne Kelly-Moll, a member of Augsburg’s Speech Team. On Saturday, Cheyenne was a finalist at the Larry Schnoor Invitational Speech Meet at Minnesota State-Mankato. In her event, prose interpretation, Cheyenne placed in the top 5 among the 30 contestants in preliminary competition, and she earned a 5th place trophy overall. Cheyenne was pitted against speakers from around the Upper Midwest, including UW-Eau Claire, Concordia/Moorhead, the University of Nebraska-Omaha, the University of North Dakota, the University of South Dakota, North Dakota State University, the University of Minnesota, and Gustavus.

Kathy McBride’s Retirement Celebration, Thursday Oct 26

Please join the Augsburg community in congratulating Kathy McBride on her 30 years of service to Augsburg University! Kathy is the Regional Co-Director of the Central America program for the Center for Global Education and Experience, and she will be retiring at the end of 2017.

In her time with Augsburg, Kathy has taught countless students from Augsburg and around the country on the Central America semester program as well as individuals learning about the region via short-term educational seminars. Kathy has lead with a critical eye and a generous heart, always holding her students and Augsburg to the highest standard. Kathy is a caring colleague whose impact on Augsburg and its legacy is far reaching. In addition to her service to Augsburg, all four of her children attended Augsburg, and two of them married fellow Auggies!

Kathy will be on campus October 23-27, so we will celebrate her in person! Students, staff, faculty and administrators are all welcome.

Represent Colombia at the 2018 National Model UN Conference in NYC

Applications are now being accepted for delegates for the 2018 National Model UN Conference in New York City. Augsburg University will send a delegation of 16 students representing Colombia to this year’s conference, which will take place March 19 – 26th, 2018.

This is a 4-credit Spring Semester course, and students accepted into the program need to enroll in POL 368 (or a POL 499 independent study) and pay a $500 program fee, which covers travel, conference registration, and hotel costs for the week in New York. Enrollment limited to 16 students and priority deadline for applying is Nov. 13.

This program also fulfills the Augsburg Experience requirement!

Study in Mexico on Spring Break

Spend your spring break in Mexico and earn 4 credits!!!

On the spring break program, Indigenous Social Activism in Chiapas, Mexico, you will meet with and learn about various Indigenous people’s approaches to social activism, learn about Indigenous cosmology and spirituality, Indigenous sovereignty or autonomy, and Indigenous cooperative/businesses and educational systems.

You can choose one 4-credit course to take on this program:
AIS 305 – Indigenous Issues of the Americas (elective course)
AIS 490 – Indigenous Issues of the Americas (Keystone course)
CCS 295 – Topics: Global Crossroads & Indigenous Resistance in Chiapas, Mexico (meets requirement for CCS major of one travel seminar and an elective, OR general elective for non-majors)
SPA 495 – Topics: Global Crossroads & Indigenous Resistance in Chiapas, Mexico (meets requirement for one culture class or one elective (for the SPA major or minor))

This program also fulfills the Augsburg Experience requirement!

These programs offer courses great for many students including general graduation requirements, courses for some majors, internship options, and a personalized, experiential learning environment. Join other Auggies, as well as students from around the US, for an unforgettable and meaningful semester.

Auggies can use their full financial aid, and automatically receive an additional $1500 Global Scholarship for these programs. Additional scholarships are available, sometimes making it less expensive to study abroad than to study and live on campus!

Seminary & Divinity School Day 2017

Are you curious about possibilities of future graduate level theological study? Join us for Seminary and Divinity Day on Thursday, October 26.

A group of Auggies will travel to Gustavus Adolphus College on the 26th to gather with students from other colleges and representatives from ~22 Seminary and Divinity Schools around the country for this special day of vocational reflection conversations! The theme for the day is from Psalm 119:125, “I am your Servant, Give me Discernment.”

Whether you’re curious to test the waters of seminary or divinity school, or you know for certain it’s something you want to do, this day is for you! Seminary & Divinity School Day is a great opportunity to explore the variety of options.

This event is free, and lunch and transportation to Gustavus Adolphus College will be provided through the Christensen Center for Vocation. We will leave Augsburg at 8:00 am and return around 4:00 pm.

“Martin Luther on the Body, Our Bodies, and the Body of Creation” with Mary Lowe Oct. 24

On Tuesday, October 24, as part of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation series, we are excited to have Mary Lowe, associate professor of Religion at Augsburg University, lecture on: Martin Luther on the Body, Our Bodies, and the Body of Creation.

Martin Luther wrote, “There are three elements in a human, the body, the soul, and the spirit.” Many of today’s complex issues involve our bodies and the body of creation: climate change, gender and sexuality, abuse, and deforestation, etc.

Professor Lowe will introduce Luther’s perspectives on bodies and creation and examine how—even today—his theology can help us better understand and address these embodied challenges.

This event is free and open to the public, and will take place in Hoversten Chapel from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm and will include a discussion and a reception.

Come join URGO and Study Abroad/Study Away to learn about this spectacular opportunity for students to not only receive funding for study abroad and learn a less commonly taught language, but to start a career working on important national and international issues after graduation!

Boren Awards provide funding to U.S. undergraduate students (first years through seniors) to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad: Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America and Middle East.

In exchange for the funding awardees work one year at a federal agency around issues of national security defined very broadly, such as sustainable development, environment, disease, migration and economic competitiveness as well as more traditional security concerns.

Awardees (who must be U.S. citizens) can be given up to:
$20,000/Academic year study abroad
$10,000/Semester study abroad
$8,000/Summer study abroad (only for STEM students)

Competitive applicants will generally have a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Garden plants and “stuff” available

This summer, the community gardeners worked with Oslund and Associates to envision a new space together. The time has come to make that space a reality!

At this point in the season, any plants, bricks, rocks, and structures left in the garden will be looking for either permanent or temporary homes. Our gardeners have taken out what they want to save before then, and the community is invited to come and grab the rest. Please come and get them! Also please respect any signs placed on objects or plants that just haven’t been able to be moved yet. If there’s no sign attached – it’s all yours!

Plants available: raspberries, strawberries, rhubarb, chives, mint, bee balm, columbine, nettle, etc.

We will have space for perennials in the new garden next year, so if you are willing to take some home for the winter, plant them in a temporary space, and bring them back for us in the spring, let me know!

Help spread around the love and plants grown in this garden over the years!
