The Twin Cities Book Festival is not only the largest and most important literary gathering in the Upper Midwest, it is the annual get-together for the Twin Cities’ devoted literary community. The Minnesota Urban Debate League is searching for debate judges for high school debate tournaments this fall. Judges will watch high school debate rounds and evaluate teams on logic, effective argumentation, and speaking skills. The judge picks a winner, assigns speaking points to individual students, and provides written feedback on their decision. No experience? No worries. We will train you. Judges will also enjoy free pizza at this great service learning opportunity!
The core debate tournaments will happen at these dates and locations:

On the spring break program, Indigenous Social Activism in Chiapas, Mexico, you will meet with and learn about various Indigenous people’s approaches to social activism, learn about Indigenous cosmology and spirituality, Indigenous sovereignty or autonomy, and Indigenous cooperative/businesses and educational systems.
You can choose one 4-credit course to take on this program:
AIS 305 – Indigenous Issues of the Americas (elective course)
AIS 490 – Indigenous Issues of the Americas (Keystone course)
CCS 295 – Topics: Global Crossroads & Indigenous Resistance in Chiapas, Mexico (meets requirement for CCS major of one travel seminar and an elective, OR general elective for non-majors)

Feeling haunted by the Halloween spirit? Call your friends and make a short horror film this fall! Augsburg University students are invited to submit their short films with spooky/scary content to be screened at the Augsburg Student Spooky Film Festival, hosted by Augsburg Art Club. The free screening will be held in Sateren Auditorium on Wed. October 25th, with popcorn and candy available. You will be able to vote on your favorite films at the end of the screening, and the filmmaker with the highest voted film will receive a prize. The time limit for films is 10 minutes, and films can be submitted by uploading a high-quality version of your work to Google Drive and then sharing it with olsonl@augsburg.edu. On Tuesday, October 24, as part of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation series, we are excited to have Mary Lowe, associate professor of Religion at Augsburg University, lecture on: Martin Luther on the Body, Our Bodies, and the Body of Creation.
Martin Luther wrote, “There are three elements in a human, the body, the soul, and the spirit.” Many of today’s complex issues involve our bodies and the body of creation: climate change, gender and sexuality, abuse, and deforestation, etc.
Professor Lowe will introduce Luther’s perspectives on bodies and creation and examine how—even today—his theology can help us better understand and address these embodied challenges.
This event is free and open to the public, and will take place in Hoversten Chapel from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm and will include a discussion and a reception.

LET’S WORK TOGETHER FOR PEACE TO GET PATRIARCHY OUT OF OUR SYSTEMS!
Please join us for this exciting event at Augsburg on Mon., 10/9 at 7:30 pm. Carol Rojas, a feminist resistance leader in Colombia, will lead an interactive workshop where she will invite us to learn about women constructing peace in Colombia. Her workshop asks participants to reflect on feminism and antimilitarism to get patriarchy out of our systems through interactive body movements and participatory activities.

Objective: To foster a space for exchange and reflection that makes it possible to share the experience of popular feminism and antimilitarism in the search for the construction of possible scenarios for hope, democracy and peace in Colombia.

What are the challenges of an anti-militarist vision in the face of the end of wars? Why did the armed conflict originate in Colombia? What do we know about the peace process for Colombia?

Our college community engagement workshop is about teaching college students about how to be more involved in their neighborhood community and what does being on a neighborhood board means for the community. Our main goal for this workshop is to have an increase of leaders who are college students get to know or how to be involved in their community in Minneapolis. To diversify the Neighborhood boards, because we also noticed there’s barely any young generations involved in the board as well. The workshop will be on Next Tuesday, October 10th. It will be located in Christensen Center, in the Marshall Room from 6-8 PM. Everyone is welcome to come to attend. As we analyzed the numbers of customers dining from 7-8 PM during the month of September, we have concluded that we will not be able to continue with the extended dinner hour. We will return to the normal 7 PM Commons closing time effective Monday, October 9.
The other hours changes made at the beginning of Fall semester have been very successful, so we will continue to open at 7 AM Monday-Friday, and extend hot food lunch until 2 PM Monday-Friday. Please let Daniel Meyer (dmeyer@aviands.com) know if you have any questions or suggestions in the future.

October is Cyber Security Month. Come to an information session to hear briefly what the current cyber threats are, learn some tips that apply at work or home, share your experiences and strategies.
Also this winter IT is adding new tool to Google Drive to protect regulated data. If you have regulated data in Drive you will get an email notification. What is regulated data? Come and find out! Adding this tools means we will not dissuade you from keeping FERPA data in Google Drive in 2018. We want to you to be able to fully use Google Drive in your work.

Pay:
$11.00/hr *+ Free Food! Non-Augsburg students will receive $11/hr, Augsburg students will receive the Augsburg student employment rate. You do not have to be a student to do tournament support.

Post signage and tournament information throughout building
Carry supplies (food and materials) in and out of location

Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs and walk significant distance (within a school building)

In this session, faculty are invited to participate in an immersion experience of discussion formats used in class regularly by Assistant Professor of Education Joaquin Munoz. Faculty will practice two systems by engaging in them and reflecting on the experience together. Guidelines for conducting these discussions will be provided, along with strategies for trouble-shooting discussion challenges.
This session with end with an A’viands gift card raffle!

What do Mike Wazowski from Monsters, Inc., Polyphemus, and Stuart the Minion have in common? Come to a lunchtime talk by Assoc. Prof. of Biology Matt Beckman for the answer. Also, you will learn about his sabbatical work in zebrafish that has enhanced the work he and students in the lab are performing to understand the molecular genetics of cyclopia. Over the past eight years Matt has built a program of research with undergraduates that focuses on Daphnia, a one-eyed (cyclopean) waterflea. In particular, the lab uses molecular biology, imaging, pharmacology and behavioral studies to explore the development and function of the eye and the motor system in Daphnia.

This fall, CTL diversity fellows will lead discussion of the novel Make Your Home Among Strangers by Jennine Capó Crucet. In the novel, Lizet, the daughter of Cuban immigrants, begins her studies at an elite liberal arts college. But the privileged world at Rawlings College feels utterly foreign to Lizet. Pulled between life at college and the needs of her family, Lizet is faced with difficult decisions that change her life forever.

Creating accessible documents is not only a good idea to ensure all students, faculty, staff, and visitors to our campus have equal access, but as a result of recent changes in the legal world, it’s now the law for us to do so on our campus too. We all have the ability to make our documents accessible to everyone, once we know how to do it. In this session, we’ll go over how to create accessible Microsoft Word and Google Docs. We’ll provide easy steps to create these documents, provide resources for accessible document creation, and feature tools to help check if you are on the right track. In addition, we’ll talk about how to make your Moodle courses accessible as well. Bring a document or Moodle site, and your computer. At the end of the session we will have work time practice these skills. Sponsored by the CLASS office and the E-Learning Team.

Faculty and staff are invited to this next installment in the “Speaking of Scholarship” series featuring Professor Bill Green, recipient of the 2017 Distinguished Contributions Award in Scholarship. Professor Green has published articles, op-ed pieces, and book chapters on history, law, and education, and he has published two books on race and civil rights in Minnesota history – A Peculiar Imbalance in Early Minnesota: 1837-1869, and Degrees of Freedom: The Origin of Civil Rights in Minnesota, 1865-1914, which won the 2016 Hognander Minnesota History Award. He is presently working on a history of Minnesota during the period of the Civil war and Reconstruction.

Interested in a paid Summer program? Public Policy and International Affairs Summer institute will be coming to Augsburg to hold an info session on Oct.9th from 3:30-4:30 in Oren Gateway Center room 111.
PPIA Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. Selected participants spend the summer at one of five participating universities (U of M, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, or University of Michigan) where they take courses, hear from top leaders in the field, and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2018 and August 2019. To be competitive for this opportunity, students should have a 3.5 GPA or above. Our college community engagement workshop is about teaching college students about how to be more involved in their neighborhood community and what does being on a neighborhood board means for the community. Our main goal for this workshop is to have an increase of leaders who are college students get to know or how to be involved in their community in Minneapolis. To diversify the Neighborhood boards, because we also noticed there’s barely any young generations involved in the board as well. The workshop will be on Next Tuesday, October 10th. It will be located in Christensen Center, in the Marshall Room from 6-8 PM. Everyone is welcome to come to attend. Students must sign up through the Google Form; there will be food provided from Afro Deli. The Honors Program once again needs interviewers for honors scholarship candidates. Interviews will begin October 23 and run through February 3, Monday through Friday, whenever classes are in session. Go to the Honors Interview Scheduling form to sign up.
Interviews typically last between 20 and 30 minutes. We will notify you as soon as you are put on the schedule, and then confirm a day or two prior to your scheduled time that you have a student to interview. At that time, we will also send you a link to a brief training video (15 minutes), and ask that you review this before you conduct the interview. Other than the training video, no advance prep is needed.
Even doing one interview helps tremendously. Thank you for doing your part to recruit great students to the Honors Program and the University.

The Twin Cities Book Festival is not only the largest and most important literary gathering in the Upper Midwest, it is the annual get-together for the Twin Cities’ devoted literary community. Pay:
$11.00/hr *+ Free Food! Non-Augsburg students will receive $11/hr, Augsburg students will receive the Augsburg student employment rate. You do not have to be a student to do tournament support.

Post signage and tournament information throughout building
Carry supplies (food and materials) in and out of location

Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs and walk significant distance (within a school building)

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is searching for debate judges for 6 high school debate tournaments this fall. Judges will watch high school debate rounds and evaluate teams on logic, effective argumentation, and speaking skills. The judge picks a winner, assigns speaking points to individual students, and provides written feedback on their decision. No experience? No worries. We will train you. Judges will also enjoy free pizza at this great service learning opportunity!

Explore Your Relationship to Social Justice while Studying Abroad in Norway

Join the study abroad office for coffee and conversation about HECUA’s “The New Norway” program. Come grab a cup of coffee and some refreshments while learning about study abroad in Norway with the HECUA program director, Alex Bielicki.
The HECUA Norway program provides students the opportunity to deeply explore globalization, identity, and the politics surround nationality and immigration. The program is place-based, experiential learning paired an interdisciplinary internship.
All students, faculty, staff, advisors, or community members interested in learning more about Norway are welcome to stop by for all or part of the hour.

• The New Norway themes, projects, and overall outline
• Program internship sites, past student experiences, and potential projects

Spend your spring break in Mexico and earn 4 credits!!!
On the spring break program, Indigenous Social Activism in Chiapas, Mexico, you will meet with and learn about various Indigenous people’s approaches to social activism, learn about Indigenous cosmology and spirituality, Indigenous sovereignty or autonomy, and Indigenous cooperative/businesses and educational systems.
You can choose one 4-credit course to take on this program:
AIS 305 – Indigenous Issues of the Americas (elective course)
AIS 490 – Indigenous Issues of the Americas (Keystone course)
CCS 295 – Topics: Global Crossroads & Indigenous Resistance in Chiapas, Mexico (meets requirement for CCS major of one travel seminar and an elective, OR general elective for non-majors)
SPA 495 – Topics: Global Crossroads & Indigenous Resistance in Chiapas, Mexico (meets requirement for one culture class or one elective (for the SPA major or minor))
This program also fulfills the Augsburg Experience requirement!

Campus Cupboard hours have been extended thanks to our wonderful volunteers. Here are the new hours starting the week of Oct 9th:
M- 8am-9am, 9:30am-6pm
T- 8am-9am, 2pm-6pm
W- 8am-9:15am, 9:30am-3pm
Th- 8am-9:30am, 10am- 1pm, 4pm-5pm
F- 8am-9:15am, 10am-1:30pm
I am still looking for volunteers to fill these shifts: Tuesdays between 9am-2pm, Wednesdays 3pm-6pm, Thursdays 1pm-4pm and 5pm-6pm, and Fridays 1:30pm-6pm. Volunteers can volunteer for as short as an hour or longer if they’d like. Volunteer shifts are a weekly commitment as we would like to keep the Cupboard open consistently. If you’re interested in learning more or would like to volunteer, donate items to the Cupboard, or have any questions, please email me! nguyenj@augsburg.edu

LET’S WORK TOGETHER FOR PEACE TO GET PATRIARCHY OUT OF OUR SYSTEMS!
Please join us for this exciting event at Augsburg on Mon., 10/9 at 7:30 pm. Carol Rojas, a feminist resistance leader in Colombia, will lead an interactive workshop where she will invite us to learn about women constructing peace in Colombia. Her workshop asks participants to reflect on feminism and antimilitarism to get patriarchy out of our systems through interactive body movements and participatory activities.

Objective: To foster a space for exchange and reflection that makes it possible to share the experience of popular feminism and antimilitarism in the search for the construction of possible scenarios for hope, democracy and peace in Colombia.
Working Questions: What emerges in Colombia after the peace process? How does popular feminism contribute to the construction of peace? What are the challenges of an anti-militarist vision in the face of the end of wars? Why did the armed conflict originate in Colombia? What do we know about the peace process for Colombia?
This workshop is co-sponsored by General Education, Languages and Cross-Cultural Studies, History, the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Sabo Center. This event will prepare us to begin thinking about the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Forum at Augsburg that will honor Nobel Laureate and Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos.

Interested in a paid Summer program? Public Policy and International Affairs Summer institute will be coming to Augsburg to hold an info session on Oct.9th from 3:30-4:30 in Oren Gateway Center room 111.
PPIA Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. Selected participants spend the summer at one of five participating universities (U of M, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, or University of Michigan) where they take courses, hear from top leaders in the field, and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2018 and August 2019. To be competitive for this opportunity, students should have a 3.5 GPA or above. The Honors Program once again needs interviewers for honors scholarship candidates. Interviews will begin October 23 and run through February 3, Monday through Friday, whenever classes are in session. Go to the Honors Interview Scheduling form to sign up.
If you are selected to interview at a particular time/day, we will notify you several days before the scheduled interview. At that time, we will also send you a link to a brief training video (15 minutes), and ask that you review this before you conduct the interview.
Even doing one interview helps tremendously. Thank you for doing your part to recruit great students to the Honors Program and the University.

The Edvard Grieg Society of Minnesota is pleased to announce a Scandinavian Song residency featuring Dr. Anna Hersey. Hailed by critics as a “force of nature”, Minnesota native and soprano Anna Hersey enjoys performing a wide range of vocal repertoire. A University of Minnesota alumnus and Fulbright scholar, Dr. Hersey recently published her first book, “Scandinavian Song: A Guide to Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish Diction”, a practical guide to help singers, voice teachers, and choral conductors unlock the mysteries and challenges of the Scandinavian vocal repertoire.

As we analyzed the numbers of customers dining from 7-8 PM during the month of September, we have concluded that we will not be able to continue with the extended dinner hour. We will return to the normal 7 PM Commons closing time effective Monday, October 9.
The other hours changes made at the beginning of Fall semester have been very successful, so we will continue to open at 7 AM Monday-Friday, and extend hot food lunch until 2 PM Monday-Friday. Please let Daniel Meyer (dmeyer@aviands.com) know if you have any questions or suggestions in the future.

On Tuesday, October 24, as part of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation series, we are excited to have Mary Lowe, associate professor of Religion at Augsburg University, lecture on: Martin Luther on the Body, Our Bodies, and the Body of Creation.
Martin Luther wrote, “There are three elements in a human, the body, the soul, and the spirit.” Many of today’s complex issues involve our bodies and the body of creation: climate change, gender and sexuality, abuse, and deforestation, etc.
Professor Lowe will introduce Luther’s perspectives on bodies and creation and examine how—even today—his theology can help us better understand and address these embodied challenges.
This event is free and open to the public, and will take place in Hoversten Chapel from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm and will include a discussion and a reception.
