HOW TO GET THERE: Take the #2 Metro Transit bus line from Franklin and 22nd to Franklin and 3rd Avenue. https://www.metrotransit.org/route/2

Celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with Centro Tyrone Guzman and Mia. Visit a community ofrenda (altar) created by artist Monica Vega, and enjoy family-friendly art-making activities, music, dancing, snacks, and more! – All activities are free and open to the public!

“Day of the Dead is an opportunity to remember those who are no longer with us and, in doing so, keep their spirits alive. I like to think about the afterlife as two different worlds – one inhabited by people who are no longer living but continue to be remembered by friends and relatives, and the other inhabited by those who have been forgotten. The world of those who are remembered is filled with joy and celebration, whereas the world of the forgotten is filled with darkness and despair. And I ask myself, ‘Which of these worlds would I want for my loved ones?’ Day of the Dead is a way for me to actively allow the memories of loved ones to continue to guide and influence my life. As my children help create altars each year, they learn about loved ones they never had the opportunity to meet. Community altars, such as this one, provide an opportunity for us all to connect with the rich historical and cultural roots of our ancestors.”

– Monica Vega, Artist

submitted by gilmerje@augsburg.edu

October 21st, 1:00-4:00pm | East Phillips Neighborhood Institute Community Event

The East Phillips Neighborhood Institute (EPNI) formed around the multifaceted vision of an indoor urban farm and housing project to promote the personal, social, environmental, and economic health of our neighborhood.

In May 2023, after a 10-year fight for environmental justice in Minneapolis’ East Phillips neighborhood, the community won the chance to convert a contested industrial warehouse into a cooperatively-owned community hub with an indoor farm and housing, against steep odds.

Come learn what EPNI has been up to for the last six months! There will be a panel of speakers and tables from the health, fundraising, legal, financial, and community outreach committees.

Saturday, October 21st, 1:00-4:00 pm

TONIGHT: Zen Buddhist Insights for Self-Awareness, Mental Health, and Wellness

submitted by truesmit@augsburg.edu

Join Interfaith at Augsburg for the next Interfaith Forum, a presentation and discussion with Busshō Lahn.

The benefits of meditative practices have been intuited for millennia, but now science has clearly observed the connection between mental wellness and curious self-awareness. The practice of mindfulness is now mainstream, and we’re beginning to ask deeper questions about what it really is, and about what it might be able to show us: What is the relationship between our mental health and our spirituality? What do words like compassion and wisdom mean for me in this age of anxiety? How are qualities like resiliency, courage, clarity, and kindness made available to us? In this program, Busshō Lahn draws upon insights from the Zen Buddhist tradition to address possible approaches to these questions based on his new book, Singing and Dancing Are the Voice of the Law (2022). http://listprod.stthomas.edu/t/550460/25509606/50076/15/?575396a8=MjAyM19GYWxsX1ByZXZpZXcgOS8yLzIwMjMgMToxMTo0OCBQTQ%3d%3d&x=817b1a38.

Celebrate Día de los Muertos with Centro Tyrone Guzman and Mia – October 28, 2023

submitted by gilmerje@augsburg.edu

Celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with Centro Tyrone Guzman and MiA

WHEN: Saturday, October 28th, 2023, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

2400 3rd Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55404

Zen Buddhist Insights for Self-Awareness, Mental Health, and Wellness with Busshō Lahn

submitted by truesmit@augsburg.edu

Ongoing Pause on University Events Requests

submitted by rjohn@augsburg.edu

University Events continues to need your support to reduce requests for events that require event planning assistance. The University Events office *can* still book campus meeting rooms, coordinate basic room set up, and book audio/visual support.

We are grateful to those across campus who are working to arrange their events to fit within those parameters. Larger, more involved events cannot be fully supported by the department for the foreseeable future.

Please see the updated University Events website for more information.
