This is a get to know the Exercise Science Club to see if this is something you would like to join! The purpose of the Augsburg Exercise Science Club to encourage a lifestyle of exercise for those in the Augsburg community. This club aspires to embolden the Augsburg community with aspects of health, exercise science, and fitness for the purpose of facilitating participation and promoting a healthy active lifestyle with the intention to inspire activity. We will be discussing and hosting events monthly which may include yoga, zumba, health/sport related documentaries, a pasta night, disc golfing and yard games in which prizes will be held out. All events are free but require that you join the club! Feel free to pop in any time between 5-7pm tonight. Augsburg Bold underscores our connections in the community for addressing the most pressing issues of our time. Augsburg’s quad has been set up as a physically-distanced outdoor seminar room, and we are pleased to announce the first in a series of distinguished speakers. In-person attendance is reserved for Augsburg students and limited to 60; all speakers will be available to stream via Zoom.
Details on the first speakers scheduled are now available on the Augsburg Bold site. Next week will feature Olivia House ’20 on “The Summer of Resistance By Black Youth” and Assistant Professor Katie Clark on “Being Bold: Caring while in Solidarity.”
There are more to come—including some surprises!
In addition to the speaker series, Augsburg Bold will also include opportunities for students to learn about important topics in our community through experiences off campus—all designed following COVID-19 mitigation practices—and to participate in Homecoming 2020 celebrations on campus.

2020 Christensen Symposium

The Bernhard M. Christensen Symposium will feature the Rev. Dr. Robert M. Franklin, Jr. In his position as the inaugural James T. and Berta R. Laney Chair in Moral Leadership at Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, Rev. Dr. Franklin challenges students to explore the concept of moral leadership in the 21st century in different cultures and contexts in the United States and around the world.
Dr. Franklin’s most recent book, Moral Leadership: Integrity, Courage, Imagination (2020), will be the focus of his October 1st keynote. Dr. Franklin proposes a model for moral leadership anchored in intellectual and ethical integrity, a vision of and commitment to the public good, and personal investment in transformative community. He shares ways in which we can discover and foster those qualities in ourselves.
The Symposium will feature a 45-minute presentation by Dr. Franklin followed by Q & A. This is a free event, open to students, staff and faculty. Registration required at webinar link provided. After registering, participants will receive a link to connect to the event.

This devised theatre project is an intimate display of the varying perspectives of Augsburg Students, alumni, and our theater community as we collectively process the transitions during public and private crises. At a Glance will be led by the three core artists, Atlese Robinson, Eshay Brantley, and Malick Ceesay members of Ambiance Theatre, a collective “dedicated to nurturing unchained imaginations and a haven for creative minds left on the margins of the theatre world.”
Creatively inclined students of color who are interested in creating an archival film piece about our current times should attend one of the following info sessions!

— FROM ROOTS TO RAP: ISLAM IN AMERICA —
Course: HIS 195 – fulfills a Humanities requirement

Travel Dates: March 12-19, 2021
We will walk in the footsteps of Malcolm X on our tour of Muslim Harlem as we study the vast diversity of Black Muslim traditions – Nation of Islam, Sunni Black Muslims, West African businesses, and Latinx Muslims of East Harlem. At New York University’s nationally acclaimed Islamic Center, located in the Village, we will observe the Friday prayer in the context of a campus community integrated with its surrounding professional workforce.
Beyond these two sites in Manhattan, we will venture out to Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx to learn from organizers and advocates of immigration rights and civil liberties, investigate the process of social disappearance of working class Muslims in the face of gentrification, conduct oral histories as paired researchers across the five boroughs, sit with disciples of a female Sufi master and experience the ambiance of their spiritual practice, visit the museums of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art to critically compare natural and cultural representation of Islam and Muslims, take a ferry ride to Elis Island, Statue of Liberty, and compare that immigration narrative with the memories of exclusion curated at the Museum of the Chinese in America, and so much more.

(3) Start building your schedule! You can book 1-1 meetings or group sessions with some of the representatives, where you can learn more and ask questions about the programs. You can add sessions on the day of the fair, but many times may be booked – so make your preferred schedule early!

On Friday, September 18th, the study abroad/away office will be holding our first ever virtual study abroad/away fair! We will be using the career services software “Handshake” for Auggies to set up one on one appointments with study abroad providers, in addition to joining group presentations. Representatives will be live from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Top tips to get the most out of Augsburg’s Virtual Study Abroad/Away Fair:
(1) Set up your profile in Handshake, making sure to provide more details on yourself and what you are looking for.
(2) Browse the Program Preview pages at engage.augsburg.edu/globalauggies/ to see which programs will be at the fair – you can see quick videos, photos of the representative you can meet, and more! This should help you narrow down a few you’d really like to talk to.
(3) Start building your schedule! You can book 1-1 meetings or group sessions with some of the representatives, where you can learn more and ask questions about the programs. You can add sessions on the day of the fair, but many times may be booked – so make your preferred schedule early!

We will walk in the footsteps of Malcolm X on our tour of Muslim Harlem as we study the vast diversity of Black Muslim traditions – Nation of Islam, Sunni Black Muslims, West African businesses, and Latinx Muslims of East Harlem. At New York University’s nationally acclaimed Islamic Center, located in the Village, we will observe the Friday prayer in the context of a campus community integrated with its surrounding professional workforce.
Beyond these two sites in Manhattan, we will venture out to Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx to learn from organizers and advocates of immigration rights and civil liberties, investigate the process of social disappearance of working class Muslims in the face of gentrification, conduct oral histories as paired researchers across the five boroughs, sit with disciples of a female Sufi master and experience the ambiance of their spiritual practice, visit the museums of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art to critically compare natural and cultural representation of Islam and Muslims, take a ferry ride to Elis Island, Statue of Liberty, and compare that immigration narrative with the memories of exclusion curated at the Museum of the Chinese in America, and so much more.

In June, the full-time Theatre faculty sent a letter titled “Working Towards Racial Justice in the Theater Department” addressing these and stating our commitment to an anti-racist department. Augsburg’s commitment to community service and engagement is long-standing and deeply held. Since 1992, day undergraduate students have participated in service projects on City Engagement Day, even before they’ve had their first class. The COVID-19 pandemic requires us to press pause on City Engagement Day this year, but our commitment to community building is unwavering. Instead of sending hundreds of incoming students out to serve Minneapolis neighborhoods and organizations, we are encouraging students, faculty, and staff to engage with their local communities in ways that are meaningful to them personally.
For those looking for local options for engagement, Sabo Center staff members have compiled this list of local opportunities for community service. We will update this document as we learn of new opportunities, and we have not vetted every one, so take care in considering COVID-19 safety practices, the organization’s capacity to host groups, and other key questions.

Explore the concept of vocation in the context of poverty and political oppression, examining the ways in which Christian theology has been and continues to be used, both to justify oppression and injustice, as well as to support social justice movements and offer hope for a peaceful and just social order. Critically examine the ways religious faith informs the daily lives and communities of people in Guatemala, especially in their work for a more peaceful and just society. Reflect upon the history of faith and the struggle for peace and justice in Guatemala through the narratives of several spiritually-grounded change agents, and their understanding of vocation.

Explore the concept of vocation in the context of poverty and political oppression, examining the ways in which Christian theology has been and continues to be used, both to justify oppression and injustice, as well as to support social justice movements and offer hope for a peaceful and just social order. Critically examine the ways religious faith informs the daily lives and communities of people in Guatemala, especially in their work for a more peaceful and just society. Reflect upon the history of faith and the struggle for peace and justice in Guatemala through the narratives of several spiritually-grounded change agents, and their understanding of vocation.

We will walk in the footsteps of Malcolm X on our tour of Muslim Harlem as we study the vast diversity of Black Muslim traditions – Nation of Islam, Sunni Black Muslims, West African businesses, and Latinx Muslims of East Harlem. At New York University’s nationally acclaimed Islamic Center, located in the Village, we will observe the Friday prayer in the context of a campus community integrated with its surrounding professional workforce.

In his historical ‘I Have a Dream’ speech, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King implored, “this is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism,” and that there is a “fierce urgency of now.” This message still holds true nearly 60 years later. And, as a coalition, CUMU is committed to working with members to act now through critical learning, dialogue, and actionable strategies.
Join CUMU on August 13 for a live, virtual forum where four CUMU presidents and chancellors will discuss where we go from here.
This moderated discussion will discuss why it is imperative to move beyond powerful rhetoric, share methods of personal and institutional accountability, explore new and promising ideas, and most importantly spur continued dialogue and commitment to fostering a successful environment for all students, faculty, staff, and community members.
NOTE: For anyone interested, please submit questions in advance when registering for this event.
