Study abroad this spring semester at one of Augsburg’s Global Study Centers in Mexico, Central America, or Southern Africa!

These programs offer courses great for many students including general graduation requirements, courses for some majors, internship options, and a personalized, experiential learning environment. Join other Auggies, as well as students from around the US, for an unforgettable and meaningful semester.

Auggies can use their full financial aid, and automatically receive an additional $1500 Global Scholarship for these programs. Additional scholarships are available, sometimes making it less expensive to study abroad than to study and live on campus!

Indigenous Social Activism in Chiapas | Spring-Break Abroad Study in Mexico on Spring Break

On the spring break program, Indigenous Social Activism in Chiapas, Mexico, you will meet with and learn about various Indigenous people’s approaches to social activism, learn about Indigenous cosmology and spirituality, Indigenous sovereignty or autonomy, and Indigenous cooperative/businesses and educational systems.

You can choose one 4-credit course to take on this program:

Have you been wondering about what it would be like to dedicate a year to serving others, living in intentional community, and discovering where and how you are being called to use your gifts?

If so, Lutheran Service Year Programs want to connect with you!

Each year, more than 200 LIFE (Lutheran Immersion & Formation Experiences) in Service volunteers serve within the United States and around the world! LIFE in Service programs include: Border Servant Corps, Lutheran Volunteer Corps, Urban Servant Corps, and Young Adults in Global Mission.

Representatives from these four programs will be on campus Tuesday, November 7. Please stop by the table in Christensen Center from 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM to learn about opportunities for you to serve through LIFE in Service programs. There will also be a special chapel at 11:30am on November 7th led by Lutheran Volunteer Corps.

Leaders from each LIFE in Service Organizations work together to provide opportunities for people in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) to live, learn, and serve in their setting. Based in accompaniment, international community, simplicity, spirituality, and sustainability, each program is committed to being ecumenical, interfaith, LGBTQ-affirming, and social and racial justice-centered.

The Theater Department is gathering donations for La Coalición de Boricuas en Minnesota (Coalition of Puerto Ricans in MN) to contribute to the Puerto Rico hurricane relief effort. Please consider a donation today.

Almost a month has passed since Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, but, because of slow and inadequate response, residents still have limited or no access to basic necessities, including food, medicine, and drinkable water.

You can bring your donations to the Campus Ministry Office in the Foss Building between 9:00a and 5:00p, Monday through Friday. We will take care of bringing everything to one of the drop-off sites.

La Coalición de Boricuas en Minnesota is asking for the following:

The challenge will run from November 1st through November 29th.

Judges will watch high school debate rounds and evaluate teams on logic, effective argumentation, and speaking skills. The judge picks a winner, assigns speaking points to individual students, and provides written feedback on their decision. No experience? No worries. We will train you. Judges will also enjoy free pizza at this great service learning opportunity!

The core debate tournaments will happen at these dates and locations:

October 27th-28th: Rosebowl (Roseville)
November 10th-11th: UMBrooks (U of M, West Bank)
December 8th-9th: The UDL Championship (TBD)

October is Cyber Security Month – Google Drive email notification info

October is Cyber Security Month. Come to an information session to hear briefly what the current cyber threats are, learn some tips that apply at work or home, share your experiences and strategies.

Also in December IT is adding new tool to Google Drive to protect regulated data. If faculty or staff have regulated data in Drive you will get an email notification. What is regulated data? Come and find out! Adding this tools means we will not dissuade you from keeping FERPA data in Google Drive in 2018. We want to you to be able to fully use Google Drive in your work.

There will also be a required online self-paced information security training coming for faculty and staff as part of our work on information security. Come and find out more!

All Saints Day Commemoration

ALL SAINTS DAY: November 1 at 10:40am in the Chapel. The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. All Saints Day celebrates the baptized people of God, living and dead, who make up the body of Christ. If you have lost a loved one or loved ones during this past year that you would like to have remembered in the All Saints service, please give their names to Janice Dames in the Campus Ministry office (104 Foss) or send them to dames@augsburg.edu.

Kathy McBride’s Retirement Celebration, Thursday Oct 26

lease join the Augsburg community in congratulating Kathy McBride on her 30 years of service to Augsburg University! Kathy is the Regional Co-Director of the Central America program for the Center for Global Education and Experience, and she will be retiring at the end of 2017.

In her time with Augsburg, Kathy has taught countless students from Augsburg and around the country on the Central America semester program as well as individuals learning about the region via short-term educational seminars. Kathy has lead with a critical eye and a generous heart, always holding her students and Augsburg to the highest standard. Kathy is a caring colleague whose impact on Augsburg and its legacy is far reaching. In addition to her service to Augsburg, all four of her children attended Augsburg, and two of them married fellow Auggies!

Kathy will be on campus October 23-27, so we will celebrate her in person! Students, staff, faculty and administrators are all welcome.

Represent Colombia at the 2018 National Model UN Conference in NYC

Applications are now being accepted for delegates for the 2018 National Model UN Conference in New York City. Augsburg University will send a delegation of 16 students representing Colombia to this year’s conference, which will take place March 19 – 26th, 2018.

This is a 4-credit Spring Semester course, and students accepted into the program need to enroll in POL 368 (or a POL 499 independent study) and pay a $500 program fee, which covers travel, conference registration, and hotel costs for the week in New York. Enrollment limited to 16 students and priority deadline for applying is Nov. 13.

This program also fulfills the Augsburg Experience requirement!

STILL LIFE WITH HORSES by Jean Harper, the new release from Howling Bird Press, makes Small Press Distribution’s Recommended List! Howling Bird Press is staffed by graduate students enrolled in a two-semester course, Publishing I and II, offered by the low-residency Creative Writing MFA program at Augsburg. Jean Harper’s memoir was selected from dozens of entries submitted to Howling Bird Press’s annual, national book prize competition. Represent Colombia at the 2018 National Model UN Conference in NYC

Applications are now being accepted for delegates for the 2018 National Model UN Conference in New York City. Augsburg University will send a delegation of 16 students representing Colombia to this year’s conference, which will take place March 19 – 26th, 2018.

This is a 4-credit Spring Semester course, and students accepted into the program need to enroll in POL 368 (or a POL 499 independent study) and pay a $500 program fee, which covers travel, conference registration, and hotel costs for the week in New York. Enrollment limited to 16 students and priority deadline for applying is Nov. 13.

This program also fulfills the Augsburg Experience requirement!

On the spring break program, Indigenous Social Activism in Chiapas, Mexico, you will meet with and learn about various Indigenous people’s approaches to social activism, learn about Indigenous cosmology and spirituality, Indigenous sovereignty or autonomy, and Indigenous cooperative/businesses and educational systems.

You can choose one 4-credit course to take on this program:

Judges will watch high school debate rounds and evaluate teams on logic, effective argumentation, and speaking skills. The judge picks a winner, assigns speaking points to individual students, and provides written feedback on their decision. No experience? No worries. We will train you. Judges will also enjoy free pizza at this great service learning opportunity!

The core debate tournaments will happen at these dates and locations:

October is Cyber Security Month. Come to an information session to hear briefly what the current cyber threats are, learn some tips that apply at work or home, share your experiences and strategies.

Also in December IT is adding new tool to Google Drive to protect regulated data. If faculty or staff have regulated data in Drive you will get an email notification. What is regulated data? Come and find out! Adding this tools means we will not dissuade you from keeping FERPA data in Google Drive in 2018. We want to you to be able to fully use Google Drive in your work.

There will also be a required online self-paced information security training coming for faculty and staff as part of our work on information security. Come and find out more!

Augsburg faculty, Campus Ministry, and other donors have asked for specific lists of foods Students of Colors and students from different cultural backgrounds would like to see in the Cupboard. Many of the foods we have at the Cupboard are lacking the diversity we see within our students, so if I could get some suggestions from students, that would be awesome!

Food Service Extended Hours Update

As we analyzed the numbers of customers dining from 7-8 PM during the month of September, we have concluded that we will not be able to continue with the extended dinner hour. We will return to the normal 7 PM Commons closing time effective Monday, October 9.

The other hours changes made at the beginning of Fall semester have been very successful, so we will continue to open at 7 AM Monday-Friday, and extend hot food lunch until 2 PM Monday-Friday. Please let Daniel Meyer (dmeyer@aviands.com) know if you have any questions or suggestions in the future.

Study in Mexico on Spring Break

Spend your spring break in Mexico and earn 4 credits!!!

On the spring break program, Indigenous Social Activism in Chiapas, Mexico, you will meet with and learn about various Indigenous people’s approaches to social activism, learn about Indigenous cosmology and spirituality, Indigenous sovereignty or autonomy, and Indigenous cooperative/businesses and educational systems.

You can choose one 4-credit course to take on this program:
AIS 305 – Indigenous Issues of the Americas (elective course)
AIS 490 – Indigenous Issues of the Americas (Keystone course)
CCS 295 – Topics: Global Crossroads & Indigenous Resistance in Chiapas, Mexico (meets requirement for CCS major of one travel seminar and an elective, OR general elective for non-majors)
SPA 495 – Topics: Global Crossroads & Indigenous Resistance in Chiapas, Mexico (meets requirement for one culture class or one elective (for the SPA major or minor))

This program also fulfills the Augsburg Experience requirement!

Diversify Campus Cupboard and other important information

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping to receive food suggestions from students to diversify the Campus Cupboard. Augsburg faculty, Campus Ministry, and other donors have asked for specific lists of foods Students of Colors and students from different cultural backgrounds would like to see in the Cupboard. Many of the foods we have at the Cupboard are lacking the diversity we see within our students, so if I could get some suggestions from students, that would be awesome!

Also, here are the Cupboard’s hours for the rest of this week and next week:
M- 8am-9:15am, 9:30am-6pm

F- 8am-9:15am, 10am-3pm

We are looking for volunteers on Tuesdays from 12pm-2pm, Wednesdays 4pm-6pm, and Thursdays 1pm-3:30pm. If you’re interested let me know! The shift could be an hour long or however long you’re able to volunteer.

We are also accepting for donations of ramen, canned soups (we’re good on tomato, so any other kinds will be much appreciated), granola bars, tuna and other canned meats, and dried pasta. Donations bins are located in the Urn/Mort lobby, at Einstein’s, in the Campus Ministry Office, and in Anderson Res Hall.

The Honors Program once again needs interviewers for honors scholarship candidates. Interviews will begin October 23 and run through February 3, Monday through Friday, whenever classes are in session. Go to the Honors Interview Scheduling form to sign up.

If you are selected to interview at a particular time/day, we will notify you several days before the scheduled interview. At that time, we will also send you a link to a brief training video (15 minutes), and ask that you review this before you conduct the interview.

Even doing one interview helps tremendously. Thank you for doing your part to recruit great students to the Honors Program and the University.

Food Service Extended Hours Pilot Update

As we analyzed the numbers of customers dining from 7-8 PM during the month of September, we have concluded that we will not be able to continue with the extended dinner hour. We will return to the normal 7 PM Commons closing time effective Monday, October 9.

The other hours changes made at the beginning of Fall semester have been very successful, so we will continue to open at 7 AM Monday-Friday, and extend hot food lunch until 2 PM Monday-Friday. Please let Daniel Meyer (dmeyer@aviands.com) know if you have any questions or suggestions in the future.

Judge Debate for Minnesota Urban Debate League

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is searching for debate judges for high school debate tournaments this fall. Judges will watch high school debate rounds and evaluate teams on logic, effective argumentation, and speaking skills. The judge picks a winner, assigns speaking points to individual students, and provides written feedback on their decision. No experience? No worries. We will train you. Judges will also enjoy free pizza at this great service learning opportunity!

The core debate tournaments will happen at these dates and locations:

October 14th: Season Opener (St. Paul)
October 27th-28th: Rosebowl (Roseville)
November 10th-11th: UMBrooks (U of M, West Bank)
December 8th-9th: The UDL Championship (TBD)

We are happy to have judges for any single tournament or multiple tournaments.

Minimizing Unconscious Bias in Hiring Training

Lunch will be provided from 11:30-12:00. The training will begin at noon and will feature remarks by Dr. Nancy Fisher (Department of Sociology), a video, and a discussion facilitated by Jeffrey Cookson of Language and Culture Worldwide. A number of employees have attended this training over the past several years, but we strongly urge all who haven’t had the opportunity to attend in the past to do so.

The tuition benefit program is a wonderful benefit for those working at Augsburg University. If you are interested in applying for this benefit for Summer 2018, Fall 2018 or Spring 2019 courses, please remember to submit the tuition benefit application. The application deadline is May 1st, but the earlier applications are submitted, the better your chances for being awarded tuition benefit at partnering institutions.

October is Cyber Security Month – new tool being added to Google Drive

October is Cyber Security Month. Come to an information session to hear briefly what the current cyber threats are, learn some tips that apply at work or home, share your experiences and strategies.

Also this winter IT is adding new tool to Google Drive to protect regulated data. If you have regulated data in Drive you will get an email notification. What is regulated data? Come and find out! Adding this tools means we will not dissuade you from keeping FERPA data in Google Drive in 2018. We want to you to be able to fully use Google Drive in your work.

There will also be online self-paced information security training coming for faculty and staff as part of our work on information security. Come and find out more!

We will notify you as soon as you are put on the schedule, and then confirm a day or two prior to your scheduled time that you have a student to interview. Other than the training video, no advance prep is needed.
