Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study (Earn Up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

Farewell to Hli Vang

It is with a heavy yet proud heart that I announce that Hli Vang will be leaving Augsburg University on November 1 for a fabulous new opportunity at the Minnesota Department of Human Services. In Hli’s 8 years at Augsburg she has been an integral part of the development and growth of the Multicultural Life Department and has been an incredible advisor and mentor to student organizations and students during her tenure. Additionally, Hli was able to successfully keep multicultural life student services afloat with only a two-person department spanning the first year and a half of Covid and now has emerged as an amazing leader to the brand new Multicultural Life staff. She has also been instrumental in helping me reimagine an updated vision and mission for the Multicultural Life Department. Quite simply, Hli will be greatly missed.

Hli rather not have a formal goodbye gathering, but welcomes anyone who would like to stop by her office and wish her well before she goes!

First-Generation Survey for Augsburg Faculty and Staff

In recognition of First-Generation College Celebration Day (Nov. 8), the departments of TRIO Student Support Services, TRIO McNair Scholars, and Multicultural Life will be hosting events that highlight the first-generation college experience during the week of November 7. These events will be geared to students, but all of the Augsburg community is welcome to attend. More information will be provided in the upcoming weeks.

In addition to this programming, we’re asking faculty and staff to complete this brief First-Generation Augsburg Community Survey. The information collected will be used to create ongoing resources and support for first-generation students here at Augsburg. Please provide as much information as you’re comfortable sharing.

THR 295 – Topics in Theater, fulfills Fine Arts requirement
SOC 495 – elective for sociology majors or minors
INS 292 — 2 credit optional add-n for students wishing to take additional credits in summer

Changing demographics, especially in rural communities, provide both challenges and opportunities for building strong and equity-minded communities. This course explores these challenges and opportunities with the goal of building community ties as well as connections between Augsburg University students and the residents of Walnut Grove, Minnesota.

While in Walnut Grove, you will meet with community members and conduct interviews to learn more about the residents of the community and their history. Research, stories, and data will be collected and used as material to create a public presentation at the end of the class.
This is a great opportunity to earn credits in a new, dynamic way during summer, without interfering with work schedules, and other summer commitments!

Sabbatical Report: The Chase

Catch up with a selection of Dr. Matthew Haines’ sabbatical work on “Playing Catch Up on The Chase and Bertrand’s Ballot Problem” during Augsburg’s Mathematics Colloquium Series at 3:40-4:40 p.m., Wednesday, October 19, 2022 in Hagfors 150A.

The Chase is a television game show (2009-present in UK; from 2013-2015; 2021-present in US) that consists of three rounds and three contestants. This presentation explores the probability of a contestant “being caught” by the chaser in the second round of the game. A solution will first be developed using Markov chains, and subsequently improved upon by a method revealing a connection to a generalized version of Bertrand’s Ballot Problem.

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month – It’s Training Time

October is cyber security awareness month. Every faculty and staff member has an important role to play in protecting the security of the data kept by the University.

In our digital lives data is at the heart of it. Augsburg has been trusted with data on our students, employees, alumni and donors. Your login information provides a key into Augsburg and that key needs to be protected. Also, as part of Augsburg’s Title IV financial aid requirements and insurance requirements employees must complete training twice a year for Augsburg to be compliant.

This year we have selected a new training provider with current topics and a more engaging delivery. You will see notification emails coming this week will be from system@litmos.com which is the training platform. The content should take you less than 30 minutes to complete.

The Sierra Club is the nation’s oldest environmental organization. They are looking for volunteers to support our local outdoor programming. They offer programs open to the general public, as well as population specific programs for BIPOC, youth, and MilVet groups. Time commitment is generally a few hours a month. Outdoor programs happen on all days of the week and times, so they likely can fit most schedules. Volunteer stipends may be available.

MN Urban Debate League Seeks In-Person Volunteers

The MNUDL is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to Twin Cities middle and high school students. Our goal is to ensure all Minnesota students to have access to debate, a powerful and transformative activity that improves academic outcomes, students’ confidence, and transferable skills like public speaking.

We’ve had a great response to our virtual tournament judging opportunities- all shifts are filled but Friday, December 9th! We still have multiple upcoming opportunities to judge debates IN PERSON in the Twin Cities!

We’re looking for judges for the following dates & locations:

• Sat. October 29: Roseville Area High School (feel free to join the Rosebowl tradition and wear a Halloween costume!)
• Sat. November 12: Highland Park
• Sat. November 19: University of Minnesota
• Sat. December 10: Twin Cities Metro location TBA

No debate experience is required. We will train you ahead of the tournament. We’re seeking caring adults who want to help students improve their skills. Judges must be able to pass a background check.

Our goal is to ensure all Minnesota students to have access to debate, a powerful and transformative activity that improves academic outcomes, students’ confidence, and transferable skills like public speaking.

We’ve had a great response to our virtual tournament judging opportunities- all shifts are filled but Friday, December 9th! We still have multiple upcoming opportunities to judge debates IN PERSON in the Twin Cities!

We’re looking for judges for the following dates & locations:

• Sat. October 29: Roseville Area High School (feel free to join the Rosebowl tradition and wear a Halloween costume!)

No debate experience is required. We will train you ahead of the tournament. We’re seeking caring adults who want to help students improve their skills. Judges must be able to pass a background check.

As companies like Amazon and Target have switched to using flex drivers to deliver their packages we seeing packages delivered all over campus instead of to the Shipping/Receiving Department. We have been trying to fix the issue of packages being left in random places around campus. If you see a package delivered to someplace other then Shipping/Receiving please let us know or bring it in so we can get it to the correct person.

Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study (Earn Up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology
research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to
complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

While in Walnut Grove, you will meet with community members and conduct interviews to learn more about the residents of the community and their history. Research, stories, and data will be collected and used as material to create a public presentation at the end of the class.

Evangeline Hagfors Obituary

It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of long-time friend and benefactor of Augsburg University, Evangeline “Vangie” Hagfors. She left this world peacefully on October 4, 2022.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 24, at Saint Andrew’s Lutheran Church, 900 Stillwater Road, Mahtomedi. Visitation will be held from 3 PM to 6 PM on Sunday, October 23, at Bradshaw, 4600 Greenhaven Drive, White Bear Lake, and one hour prior to the service at church.

Updated Lead Time for the Copy Center

With the 2022-23 school year, Augsburg has decided to have Central Services switch to a three-person staff:

Billy Callen – Copy Center
Jeni Long – Mail Room/Site Lead
Cody Hua – Shipping/Receiving

With the change in staffing levels we need to change the print project lead time to 24-hours. Please be sure to call the Copy Center (612-330-1054) before submitting anything needed sooner. The smoothest process to having your print job completed in time is to submit it using the Augsburg Copy Request system, https://sites.augsburg.edu/centralservices/copy-center-costs/. It is not just about the time it takes to print the order. We are not always at the desk to see the order come into the email. We need to be able to be away from the desk to cut, laminate and fix printers among other things.

Printer support calls/paper request may now take up to 3 hours for Central Services to have someone free to come and look at it. We need to have one person covering Copy Center/Shipping/Receiving and cannot send all three of us out at the same time. Please call us when your put in your second to last ream of paper to avoid being completely out of paper. If you do not have a backup printer option please ask IT how to add the printer driver to your computer so if the main printer you use is waiting for service you have another option to send your documents to. The Copy Center is also an option at the link above.

As companies like Amazon and Target have switched to using flex drivers to deliver their packages we seeing packages delivered all over campus instead of to the Shipping/Receiving Department. We have been trying to fix the issue of packages being left in random places around campus. If you see a package delivered to someplace other then Shipping/Receiving please let us know or bring it in so we can get it to the correct person.

Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study (Earn Up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology
research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to
complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

RLN 480 fulfills the Keystone requirement for many majors. RLN 409 completes the Search for Meaning II requirement. The class meets every-other Tuesday evening during spring semester and also travels to Guatemala on spring break.

This program ALSO fulfills the AUGSBURG EXPERIENCE requirement.

To participate, you will be charged a study abroad fee of $3,899, which includes international airfare, hotels, meals, all program activities and support in Guatemala. Some scholarships are available.

This course will examine the ways that Los Angeles in general–and Hollywood in particular– has shaped social, cultural, and political ideas about what it means to be American.

Take the class on campus during spring semester alongside your other courses, and travel together with the class to Los Angeles, CA, March 11-19 (spring break).

We are looking for editors and a graphic designer to help us with our student organization that has been around since the mid 70s. These are stipend positions $$$ and a great way to dip your toe into the wonderful world of publishing.

There are a few open positions for anyone and everyone of any skill level or experience. We do especially encourage BIPOC, AAPI, queer, trans, non-binary, women, and/or underclassmen to apply.

October is cyber security awareness month. Every faculty and staff member has an important role to play in protecting the security of the data kept by the University.

In our digital lives data is at the heart of it. Augsburg has been trusted with data on our students, employees, alumni and donors. Your login information provides a key into Augsburg and that key needs to be protected. Also, as part of Augsburg’s Title IV financial aid requirements and insurance requirements employees must complete training twice a year for Augsburg to be compliant.

This year we have selected a new training provider with current topics and a more engaging delivery. You will see notification emails coming this week will be from system@litmos.com which is the training platform. The content should take you less than 30 minutes to complete.

Welcome Janet Morales to the STEM Programs Team

Please join us in welcoming Janet Morales as the STEM Programs Grants Coordinator. She will divide her time in this part-time position between the NSF PRISM Scholarship Grant and the NSF PROSPECT grant which was awarded in April of 2022. The NSF PRISM grant supports STEM scholarship cohorts at Augsburg along with three community colleges. The NSF PROSPECT grant is a NSF scholarship research hub which will explore how equitable partnerships between two-year colleges and four-year institutions can empower low-income STEM transfer students. Researchers at Clemson University, East Carolina University, Southeast Community College, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Augsburg University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the University of Texas at Arlington, and YNOTI Solutions along with 14 two-year college partners are united by their goal to support domestic, low-income undergraduates as they navigate the transfer process.

Janet brings a strong record of working to increase access to higher education. She worked at Augsburg for over a decade in both admissions and managing the Traveler’s EDGE Scholarship program and has spent the last three years working for the Minnesota Department of Corrections working to increase access to higher education for incarcerated individuals. We are very fortunate to have her join the STEM Programs team!

Augsburg Students Present at North Star STEM Alliance Kick-Off

On Friday, September 23, eleven Auggies presented research posters at the 2022 Louis Stokes North Star STEM Alliance (LS-NSSA) Kick-Off, an annual event that celebrates the scholarly achievements of multicultural students in the sciences. These students conducted research last summer and during the previous academic year, working under the mentorship of a faculty member in their discipline. In addition to the poster session, the event also featured a panel of STEM professionals, moderated by Dr. Nana Owusu, an Augsburg alumnus (‘13) who recently earned his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Iowa.
