Teaching faculty and staff are consistently called to support and care for their students, sometimes in complex and challenging situations. In order to fulfill this role, teaching faculty and staff must also have tools, environments, and strategies that promote care and balance for themselves. This session, hosted by CTL, the Health and Well-Being Task Force and CWC, will focus on helping teaching faculty and staff consider strategies and perspectives that can improve their own sense of professional and personal well-being.

The Boren Scholarship is an initiative by the US Federal Government to increase the study of languages by individuals committed to public service careers. The Boren Scholarship can be used to cover a variety of study abroad experiences where language learning is the focus. URGO and Study Abroad provide joint advising on this program and can assist any applicant in selecting a program, developing budgets and writing/editing application essays.

Scholarship amounts:
Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)
Up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks
Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

Immediately preceding the next faculty meeting, please join the assessment committee from 3 – 3:30pm on Wednesday, November 9th, in Hagfors Center room 106 for an opportunity to discuss the results of a recent pair of high-quality surveys of students and faculty.

In the spring of 2022, hundreds of Augsburg First Year and Senior students completed the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). This survey measures students’ perception of Academic Challenge, Student-Faculty Interactions, Quality of Interactions, and experience with High Impact Practices. Meanwhile, tens of faculty members (proportionally, a fine result!) provided their perception of students’ experiences in these same domains on the Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE).

The combined NSSE-FSSE results offer a unique opportunity to directly compare student and faculty perspectives on a wide range of academic issues. Whether you teach in upper or lower-division courses – and regardless of your academic discipline – these data offer something for everyone.

A copy of the summary report will be made available to faculty members who RSVP in advance of the session. We will set aside the majority of the time for discussion of the results, so we encourage attendees to preview the findings. A recording of the event will be available for those who are unable to attend. Unfortunately, any recording can’t possibly offer the thrills and excitement of first-hand experience with such breathtaking data, so in-person attendance is highly encouraged.

The Boren Scholarship is an initiative by the US Federal Government to increase the study of languages by individuals committed to public service careers. The Boren Scholarship can be used to cover a variety of study abroad experiences where language learning is the focus. URGO and Study Abroad provide joint advising on this program and can assist any applicant in selecting a program, developing budgets and writing/editing application essays.

Scholarship amounts:
Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)
Up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks
Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

In THE MASTERS REVIEW Cole Meyer praises I HAVE HER MEMORIES NOW (Howling Bird Press, 2022), “The characters who populate Grinstead’s pages are as sure of themselves as they are flawed. Take, for instance, the narrator-protagonist of the titular story, ‘I Have Her Memories Now’ who announces in the opening lines: ‘I went to grade school with Marlie O’Hagan, the world’s first recipient of a double-organ transplant. I despised her.’ Or, the narrator-protagonist of ‘Last Body,’ which begins, ‘They’d put Mary Helen in a gray pantsuit, a wool-blend number with a single-breasted blazer at least a size too small. I couldn’t imagine a worse choice.’ Grinstead leverages their defiant, opinionated nature, and forces them to confront the fact that the world is not as black-and-white as they would like to believe. . . . Grinstead shows again and again that she has a gift for the surprising but inevitable conclusion, and it’s no wonder Howling Bird Press selected this collection for this year’s book prize. Evening Course Meetings: Tuesdays & Thursdays 6:00-9:00pm, for 4 weeks beginning May 9 and ending June 3.
Travel: This course will travel to Walnut Grove, Minnesota for 2 short residencies:
Tuesday, May 23 – Friday, May 26
Thursday, June 1- Saturday, June 3, including a public showing in Walnut Grove on June 2

Changing demographics, especially in rural communities, provide both challenges and opportunities for building strong and equity-minded communities. This course explores these challenges and opportunities with the goal of building community ties as well as connections between Augsburg University students and the residents of Walnut Grove, Minnesota.

While in Walnut Grove, you will meet with community members and conduct interviews to learn more about the residents of the community and their history. Research, stories, and data will be collected and used as material to create a public presentation at the end of the class.
This is a great opportunity to earn credits in a new, dynamic way during summer, without interfering with work schedules, and other summer commitments!

Interested in helping young people? AYTI offers young people a chance to connect with others. This program is an annual week long summer program for high school students (9th-12th grades). AYTI practices place-based vocational discernment connected to a specific theme. Participants engage in daily reflection with a theology, community based learning, small group relationship building, and worship. Interviews will be on November 12, 2022.

After 19 months of bargaining, it is time for us to vote to ratify our historic first union contract!

THIS EVENING, the Union will hold the second of two ZOOM information and voting sessions. If you did not attend yesterday’s session, you must attend the session this evening in order to vote. Vote will be held by private ballot at the end of the information session that reviews the language in the contract. Ratification happens by a simple majority of those who vote.

This semester-long program is an investigation of a society’s transition from violent conflict to sustainable democracy, a transition that continues to be a fragile and difficult process. On this semester program you will complete an internship – a stellar addition to your resume for post-college job hunting! – in a setting that focuses on one or more of the key themes: Diversity and Inclusion; Equality and Social Justice; Democracy and Active Participation; Human Rights and Social Responsibility.

In addition to your unique internship, you will:

Interested in helping young people? AYTI offers young people a chance to connect with others. This program is an annual week long summer program for high school students (9th-12th grades). AYTI practices place-based vocational discernment connected to a specific theme. Participants engage in daily reflection with a theology, community based learning, small group relationship building, and worship. Interviews will be on November 12, 2022.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) program now offers CLS Spark. This is a virtual initiative for undergraduate students to lean essential languages for America’s engagement with the world.

As a virtual program, CLS Spark allows students to have an immersive language and cultural experience with international communities. Spark participants will spend approximately 8 weeks during the summer learning either Arabic, Russian, or Chinese through online classes and activities facilitated by native speakers. You do not need to have any prior knowledge of these languages.

– 10 hours of intense live group instruction a week
– Cultural activities and individual consultations
– Monthly professional development workshops and inclusive support

Participants of CLS Spark will receive:
– Language instruction and cultural programming;
– Textbooks and language learning materials
– Language gains certified using the widely-recognized ACTFL OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) assessment
– Non-competitive eligibility for U.S. government employment for up to three -years after the program completion;
– Academic credit issued through Bryn Mawr College; and
– A stipend towards equipment and connectivity costs (for example, a web camera or microphone).

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is
– A fully-funded eight to ten week language and cultural immersion program
– Students receive eight credits of intensive language instruction
– Part of a US State Department initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages critical to national security and economic prosperity
– There are 14 languages that applicants can select from. Alumni of the program also receive one year of non-competitive eligibility (NCE) status when applying for federal government jobs

Competitive applicants will need
– To illustrate a commitment to language learning,
– A strong academic record and potential to succeed in a rigorous academic setting
– Ability to adapt to an intensive program and challenging cultural environment.
– Most programs do not require experience studying the selected language. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Applications are due Tuesday, November 15, 2022 by 8:00 PM EST / 5 PM PST.

The Boren Scholarship is an initiative by the US Federal Government to increase the study of languages by individuals committed to public service careers. The Boren Scholarship can be used to cover a variety of study abroad experiences where language learning is the focus. URGO and Study Abroad provide joint advising on this program and can assist any applicant in selecting a program, developing budgets and writing/editing application essays.
Scholarship amounts:
Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)
Up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks
Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

This course explores these challenges and opportunities with the goal of building community ties as well as connections between Augsburg University students and the residents of Walnut Grove, Minnesota.

While in Walnut Grove, you will meet with community members and conduct interviews to learn more about the residents of the community and their history. Research, stories, and data will be collected and used as material to create a public presentation at the end of the class.
This is a great opportunity to earn credits in a new, dynamic way during summer, without interfering with work schedules, and other summer commitments!

THE TOWER magazine is open for submissions from undergraduates currently enrolled in colleges and universities within the U.S.

Founded in 1952, THE TOWER is an award-winning print annual that publishes the best in poetry, fiction, visual art, and creative nonfiction by undergraduate students. This is the first year we have extended eligibility for submissions to students beyond the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. We’d love to see work from Augsburg students!

Our open-ended theme for the 2023 edition is Patchwork, which for us connotes crafting, patience, attention, accretion, salvage, repair, diversity, togetherness, endurance—and more! We’d love to see what Patchwork means for you and your work. Submissions are free and online, with a deadline of November 30, 2022. The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is
– A fully-funded eight to ten week language and cultural immersion program
– Students receive eight credits of intensive language instruction
– Part of a US State Department initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages critical to national security and economic prosperity
– There are 14 languages that applicants can select from. Alumni of the program also receive one year of non-competitive eligibility (NCE) status when applying for federal government jobs

Competitive applicants will need
– To illustrate a commitment to language learning,
– A strong academic record and potential to succeed in a rigorous academic setting
– Ability to adapt to an intensive program and challenging cultural environment.
– Most programs do not require experience studying the selected language. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) program now offers CLS Spark. This is a virtual initiative for undergraduate students to lean essential languages for America’s engagement with the world.

As a virtual program, CLS Spark allows students to have an immersive language and cultural experience with international communities. Spark participants will spend approximately 8 weeks during the summer learning either Arabic, Russian, or Chinese through online classes and activities facilitated by native speakers. You do not need to have any prior knowledge of these languages.

– 10 hours of intense live group instruction a week
– Cultural activities and individual consultations
– Monthly professional development workshops and inclusive support

Participants of CLS Spark will receive:
– Language instruction and cultural programming;
– Textbooks and language learning materials
– Language gains certified using the widely-recognized ACTFL OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) assessment
– Non-competitive eligibility for U.S. government employment for up to three -years after the program completion;
– Academic credit issued through Bryn Mawr College; and
– A stipend towards equipment and connectivity costs (for example, a web camera or microphone).

Interested in helping young people? AYTI offers young people a chance to connect with others. This program is an annual week long summer program for high school students (9th-12th grades). AYTI practices place-based vocational discernment connected to a specific theme. Participants engage in daily reflection with a theology, community based learning, small group relationship building, and worship.

Interviews will be on November 12, 2022.
