Auto Thefts on the Rise in Minneapolis 1st Precinct

In the first month of 2023 there have been 700 auto thefts, 33 car jackings and 260 thefts from motor vehicles in the Minneapolis 1st Precinct. Per the Minneapolis Police, many of these vehicles were stolen with a key or fob left in the vehicle, or when the vehicle was left running and unoccupied. Even for vehicles with fobs instead of keys, the vehicle can still be stolen and driven until it is shut off or runs out of gas.

You can help prevent auto thefts from occurring on our campus!
– Be aware of your surroundings
– Shut off your vehicle, lock the doors and take your key/fob with you – ALWAYS!
– Do not leave valuables, bags, backpacks, or similar items in plain view within your vehicle
– If possible, take extra measures to safe guard your vehicle(s), such as installing an alarm system or steering wheel locking device

By always following the tips above, even when using parking ramps or private garages, you reduce the risk of having your vehicle damaged or stolen.

Always report any suspicious activity immediately to the Department of Public Safety by calling 612-330-1717, or by using the Campus Shield safety app.

Faculty Scholarship Grant Applications Now Open

The Provost and Faculty Development Committee are requesting applications for Scholarship Grants to support Augsburg faculty scholarship. Recipients of the Scholarship Grant can receive up to a maximum of $4000 to support their scholarly endeavors between June 1, 2023 – May 15, 2024.

Scholarship Grant applications are due by midnight on Friday, February 24, 2023!

Looking for a Great Summer Job? URGO Summer Research Phase 1 Applications Due Thursday

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM: All disciplines welcome
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 15th – July 28th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 9th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research or creative activity is going on in your department!

URGO On-Campus Research

URGO Academic–Year Research Funds

URGO now has funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. Students are paid $1,200 for 80 hours of research. Research must be completed by May 23.

Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals immediately. The URGO Advisory Committee will review proposals on a rolling basis.

Augsburg URGO is partnering with Gustavus Adolphus College to provide a virtual workshop series for prehealth students.

Planning to apply for a health profession program? Not sure how to get started with your personal statement? This workshop will help you to brainstorming and give you some tips on how to make your statement standout. Do’s and Don’ts will be covered and example statements will be shared and discussed.

Free Trip to Holocaust Museum – Application Due TOMORROW

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program.

The 2023 trip will take place on Tuesday, March 28, 2023. Applications due February 7, 2023 and can be found at https://jewishminneapolis.org/minne/. If you would like to learn more about the program or would like advising on the application, please contact the URGO office at urgo@augsburg.edu.

MINNE Holocaust Fellows

Generous Scholarship for Rising Juniors Interested in Public Service

The Voyager Scholarship for Public Service includes:
– Up to $50,000 in financial aid: Students will receive up to $25,000 per year in “last dollar” financial aid for their junior and senior years of college.
– Summer Voyage: Students will receive a $10,000 stipend and Airbnb credit to pursue a summer work-travel experience between their junior and senior year of college.
– Fall Summit: Each fall, students will be invited to a summit to help define and inspire their public service journey.
– Network of leaders: Throughout the program, students will be invited to an ongoing speaker series, giving them access to a network of leaders.
– 10-year travel stipend: After graduation, Airbnb will provide the students with a $2,000 Airbnb travel credit every year for 10 years, totaling $20,000. This will allow students to continue to broaden their horizons and forge new connections throughout their public service careers.

Eligibility:
– Have four (4) semesters left as of Spring 2023
– Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0
– Demonstrate financial need
– Have demonstrated a commitment to public service
– Plan to pursue a career in public service upon graduation
– Be a United States (US) citizen, US permanent resident, or DACA

Augsburg’s annual Zyzzogeton Research Symposium showcases the work of over 50 undergraduate researchers in all academic disciplines and will take place on Tuesday, April 11, 2023. Students who have conducted research over the course of the last year and would like to present a poster should register at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) by March 1 (a mentor-approved abstract is required to register).

We also wanted to share our excitement about the Parental Leave and additional personal days that President Pribennow announced. These benefits are the result of the Augsburg Staff Union’s negotiations over the last two years. We are so glad that the administration decided to extend the benefits we secured in our contract to all benefits-eligible staff, even those not in our union. This was our hope when we formed a union– that we could help improve working conditions for everyone.

Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study (Earn Up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

Donations of Cold Weather Gear Needed

With the recent closing of the encampment in the Cedar Riverside neighborhood, the Afghan Cultural Society, located in a storefront on Cedar Avenue, is seeing more unsheltered individuals stopping in and asking for help. Cold weather gear is especially needed. To help the Afghan Cultural Society respond to this immediate need, Health Commons and the Sabo Center are collecting new or gently used hats, gloves, and coats. Handwarmers are also appreciated. Please place donations in the bin outside of the Nursing Department (first floor of Science Hall).

Hearing, Helping, Healing Our Neighbors With Mental Health Challenges

Augsburg Campus Ministry invites you to the Fosdick Lecture on Preaching in Hoversten Chapel on March 7th at 10:00 am. This year’s topic is “Hearing. Helping. Healing our Neighbors with Mental Health Challenges: Addressing Mental Health Concerns in Religious Communities.” Mindy Greiling and Senator John Marty will share their personal and legislative experience in addressing mental health concerns. One in three people have a family member struggling with mental health, yet we as churches, as a community, as a society have much to improve on how we relate to them.

Mindy Greiling served in the Minnesota House of Representatives for 20 years where she initiated the first state bipartisan mental health caucus after her son was diagnosed with schizophrenia. She served on the state and national NAMI boards and is the immediate past president of NAMI Ramsey County.

Senator John Marty has been a state senator since 1987. He is a strong advocate for government ethics, environmental protection, and affordable health care for everyone. Throughout his career, John has been a strong advocate for public investments in people — in health, education and employment – to enable all people to reach their full potential.

Pastor Aaron Fuller serves as the Pastor at Our Father’s Lutheran Church in Rockford, MN and as a Navy Reserve Chaplain.

Fun Summer Job – Attend the Camp Fair February 8

Are you looking for a summer job working with youth? Looking to gain leadership skills and a job where you can grow in your faith? If yes, stop by the summer camp fair on Wednesday, February 8th from 10:00am-12:30pm in the lobby of the Christensen Center.

The fair is free and open to all students. Camp representatives from Christian camps are looking to hire students to work with youth. Jobs vary from camp counselors, activity instructors, kitchen help, etc. Housing and food are included, as well as, as a stipend. If interested, many representatives will interview you at the fair.

A few reasons why you should work at a camp:

*Camp will build teamwork skills like no other
*You learn how to be a role model
*The kids will inspire you as much as you inspire them, if not more.
