Building Access Pilot Feedback

For the Fall 2022 semester building access across campus was changed from having public access during typical business hours (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) to being on fob access only, which restricted public access to the majority of Augsburg facilities. This was a pilot program to see if limiting public access to Augsburg facilities affected the number of incidents reported on campus as well as the general feeling of safety on the Augsburg campus for our community. As we enter the second month of the Spring semester, the Department of Public Safety, along with the President’s Leadership Team and the Augsburg Space Committee will be reviewing data and community feedback to determine if it is in the best interest of Augsburg and our community to continue fob only access, revert to having public hours, or a mix of the two.

To that end, we are asking for more community feedback to include in our discussion. We would appreciate any feedback from all students, staff and faculty. What we are most interested in is how fob only access during the fall 2022 semester affected your academic studies/department work, has it had an impact on your view of safety/security on campus, and if it has created any hardships or issues for you and/or your guests. That being said, any and all feedback is welcome.

Faculty Scholarship Grant Applications Now Open

The Provost and Faculty Development Committee are requesting applications for Scholarship Grants to support Augsburg faculty scholarship. Recipients of the Scholarship Grant can receive up to a maximum of $4000 to support their scholarly endeavors between June 1, 2023 – May 15, 2024.

Scholarship Grant applications are due by midnight on Friday, February 24, 2023!

Public Leader Scholar Application

The Interfaith Scholars program is one of two Public Leader Scholar opportunities being offered AY 2023. Interfaith Scholars will be taught by Interfaith Institute’s Executive Directors Najeeba Syeed, and offers students a unique opportunity to explore how their worldview/faith(s) shapes them as leaders, as well as build their leadership skills to engage across difference.

Public Leader Scholar Applications

Looking for a Great Summer Job? URGO Summer Research Phase 1 Applications Due February 9

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM: All disciplines welcome
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 15th – July 28th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 9th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research or creative activity is going on in your department!

URGO On-Campus Research

URGO Academic–Year Research Funds

URGO now has funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. Students are paid $1,200 for 80 hours of research. Research must be completed by May 23.

Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals immediately. The URGO Advisory Committee will review proposals on a rolling basis.

Free Trip to Holocaust Museum – Application Due Tuesday

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program.

The 2023 trip will take place on Tuesday, March 28, 2023. Applications due February 7, 2023 and can be found at https://jewishminneapolis.org/minne/. If you would like to learn more about the program or would like advising on the application, please contact the URGO office at urgo@augsburg.edu.

MINNE Holocaust Fellows

Generous Scholarship for Rising Juniors Interested in Public Service

The Voyager Scholarship for Public Service includes:
– Up to $50,000 in financial aid: Students will receive up to $25,000 per year in “last dollar” financial aid for their junior and senior years of college.
– Summer Voyage: Students will receive a $10,000 stipend and Airbnb credit to pursue a summer work-travel experience between their junior and senior year of college.
– Fall Summit: Each fall, students will be invited to a summit to help define and inspire their public service journey.
– Network of leaders: Throughout the program, students will be invited to an ongoing speaker series, giving them access to a network of leaders.
– 10-year travel stipend: After graduation, Airbnb will provide the students with a $2,000 Airbnb travel credit every year for 10 years, totaling $20,000. This will allow students to continue to broaden their horizons and forge new connections throughout their public service careers.

Eligibility:
– Have four (4) semesters left as of Spring 2023
– Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0
– Demonstrate financial need
– Have demonstrated a commitment to public service
– Plan to pursue a career in public service upon graduation
– Be a United States (US) citizen, US permanent resident, or DACA

Weekly eLearning Update: Basic Troubleshooting Instructions

This week’s eLearning Update covers some Basic Troubleshooting instructions including restarting your computer, trying a different browser, clearing your cache/cookies, and reporting to your LFC or IDT if the problem is not fixed.

1) Restart your computer
A slow running computer can be an indication that memory is limited and needs to be released. A simple restart refreshes all the system memory registers making them ready to start over. If your computer is restarted on a more consistent basis it will keep it running optimally over time.

2) Try a different browser
The security updates alone are reasons you should always make sure you are using the latest version of your browser. Outdated versions of web browsers can open serious security flaws that allow malicious websites to read your files, steal passwords, and infect your computer.

3) Clear your cache/cookies from all time
If you clear your browser’s cache and temporary internet files regularly, this helps your computer or device run optimally—and doing so can help fix certain problems, like a website loading slowly, or formatting issues on a web page. Here are two brief videos, provided by Nathan Lind, LFC, that provide details on how to clear your cache/cookies on two of the most common browsers.

4) Report to LFC if still not fixed
In case the above do not do the trick, report your computer issue to your LFC or IDT. Remember to include the following information:

What is happening (error message language, behavior)
Where it is happening (what course or file specifically)
When it started
What you have tried so far
Urgency level

Support Girls & Gender Expansive Youth In Financial Literacy Leadership Debates

Are you a woman or gender expansive person employed or studying in the field of finance?

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, serves middle and high school students in the Twin Cities. We are looking for leaders to join us as volunteer debate judges for our Financial Literacy Leadership Debates program.

In this program, girls and gender expansive youth learn about core financial literacy subjects through the fun, engaging, and competitive vehicle of debate. The topic this year involves the advantages and disadvantages of banking at a large national bank versus a local credit union.

Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study (Earn Up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

Minnesota History Day is looking for volunteer judges!
There are multiple opportunities available for judges–virtual and in-person–for the Spring 2023 MN History Day. As a judge, you work as a team with 2-3 other judges to review projects and select the strongest to advance to the next level of the competition. It’s a great way to connect with High School students in Minnesota, meet other educators, and really just pretty dang fun (and there are good snacks).

We invite you to join Women in STEM (WIS) for an introductory meeting today, Feb. 3rd, at 310pm in the Food Lab (Hagfors 108). This is an opportunity to get to know each other a little better and to provide input for a future alumni panel. Snacks will be provided!

About WIS: WIS at Augsburg is open to all people who support women and other minority groups within STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics). Although women are graduating with science degrees in increasing numbers, their count diminishes by the time they reach the workforce and representation is even less at more senior levels. Some of the identified reasons for the prominent disparity in the STEM workforce include a variety of obstacles that women face at different stages of their lives and careers. Fixing some of these “broken rungs” in the “ladder to success” can contribute toward achieving gender parity. Augsburg’s WIS group is made of students and faculty with this goal to create community support regarding disparities in the STEM field. It supports and organizes activities that bridge professional, personal, and cultural enrichment such as hosting networking and career development events where students can find mentors, listening to “success” stories, and meeting with professionals. Learning about existing disparities and practices to tackle in STEM can help students talk about and address various successes and challenges in their educational endeavors and in future workplaces.

Students: Work at a Camp This Summer – Camp Fair on February 8

Are you looking for a summer job working with youth? Looking to gain leadership skills and a job where you can grow in your faith? If yes, stop by the summer camp fair on Wednesday, February 8th from 10:00am-12:30pm in the lobby of the Christensen Center.

The fair is free and open to all students. Camp representatives from Christian camps are looking to hire students to work with youth. Jobs vary from camp counselors, activity instructors, kitchen help, etc. Housing and food are included, as well as, as a stipend. If interested, many representatives will interview you at the fair.

A few reasons why you should work at a camp:

Wednesday, March 1, 2023 from 9:15 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Join us for Day at the Capitol 2023 where you can advocate for increased funding for education. Your legislators need to hear from you about the Minnesota State Grant program and other causes that are important to you.

What happens at Day at the Capitol?
You’ll attend a Minnesota State Grant advocacy and lobbying training with student advocates from Augsburg and other Minnesota private colleges. Then you’ll meet with legislators (we’ll make appointments for you in advance) and have lunch at the Capitol. The Minnesota Private College Council will host a Q&A session with public policy experts and policymakers and will provide everything you need to be a successful advocate.

The group from Augsburg will take the light rail to and from the Capitol together. There will also be an optional pizza night on Tuesday, February 28 to meet other advocates from Augsburg and get ready for your day of civic engagement.

Paid Opportunity for Fluent Spanish Speakers: Judge the Spanish Debate League

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is seeking fluent Spanish speakers to serve as debate judges for our upcoming Spanish Debate League tournaments. These tournaments help middle and high school students build their Spanish fluency as well as public speaking skills, self confidence, and critical thinking. The topic this year involves Puerto Rico becoming a US State.

We will pay judges $55 per tournament. No debate experience is required, but Spanish fluency is. All judges will receive training. Judges are asked to listen to students speak, choose a winner, and provide written and verbal feedback at the end of the round.

Tournaments will take place in person, at locations in the Twin Cities Metro, on Thursday evenings throughout late March, April, and May:

High School Tournaments:

• March 30
• April 20
• May 4

Middle School Tournaments:

• April 13
• April 27
• May 11

The tournaments will start at 4 and end at 7. The tournaments will involve two rounds at a time. Here is a rough tournament schedule:

Defend Glendale & Public Housing Coalition seeks a Graphic Designer

This position can be filled by UMN undergraduate students, non-University community members, or students affiliated with non-UMN institutions.

Schedule: February 7 to April 7, 2023
15–20 hours per week
Flexible schedule with meetings three times a week
Hybrid; in-person and remote work

Reports to: Defend Glendale & Public Housing Coalition Campaign Organizer Ladan Yusuf

Summary:
The goal of this job is to design graphics for an exhibit celebrating the 70th Anniversary of Glendale Townhomes, the oldest public housing development in Minneapolis. The exhibit will examine the legacy of discrimination and divestment in public housing, and celebrate Glendale’s cultural diversity and the community’s determination to maintain it.

Main Responsibilities:
Create graphics for the layout of the exhibit and displays

Support the development of narrative and visual content for the exhibit, including posters, videos, and interactive displays

Assist in creating displays and interactive elements, including a digital walking tour

Prepare final exhibit materials and content, review and coordinate the production of the topics and displays

Required Qualifications:
Experience and comfort working with communities of color in racial justice and/or decolonial initiatives

Experience synthesizing research and collected images into narrative/visual presentations

Experience creating a cohesive branding project from start to finish

Able to work with community feedback to strengthen project

Working knowledge of Adobe CS (InDesign) with access to digital resources required for graphic production

Strong organizational and communication skills (writing and graphic)
