CTL is joining Bridget Robinson-Riegler, Psychology Professor and member of Faculty Senate, to bring you Fellowship Fridays support sessions. All faculty members and teaching staff are invited to gather and share their experiences with teaching, learning, and advising in this strange new world. – we’ll trade ideas, advice, highs, lows, successes, and failures – or maybe we’ll just plain old vent. Most importantly, we will attempt to inoculate ourselves against one of the more insidious side effects of this pandemic – isolation. So grab a cup of coffee or tea, or pour a glass of wine, and Zoom in to support your fellow instructors and work through this challenging time together.

Campus Ministry invites students to participate in an Alternative Spring Break experience March 15-19, 2021, offering the students an opportunity to look deeper at justice issues in the Twin Cities and surrounding area and engage in meaningful, relationship-centered volunteer work.
The justice issues will be examined through several experiences in the Twin Cities and reflection and sharing in order for participants to process their experience communally and individually. These experiences include:
MN Council of Churches Sacred Sites Tour, exploring MN history through a Native lens by visiting sacred sites and through storytelling.
A presentation and activities by the University of MN Mapping Prejudice project, exploring housing inequity due to racial disparities.
A presentation and activities by the Lutheran Social Service of MN (LSS-MN) Advocacy team, providing practical and current information on ways to be advocates.
Activities are subject to change due to COVID-19 protocols.
For volunteer opportunities, students will partner with LSS-MN at Supported Living Homes (SLH), known as ‘group homes.’ SLH provides a family home setting to no more than 4 community members living with differing abilities.
Students will serve in small groups at several homes. Activities may include yard work, building maintenance, meal prep, and social activities alongside those who live in the home. Volunteer work will focus on the relational aspect of volunteering, rather than the actual jobs accomplished. Volunteer activities are designed to help volunteers and residents see one another as individuals rather than ‘other.’
This ASB has been approved to count as an Augsburg Experience. Please indicate on the registration form if you would like that option.
Cost: $25, including the required book & lunch each of the 5 days. Please fill out the registration form & turn in your fee to Janice Dames in the Campus Ministry office.

The Batalden Scholar in Applied Ethics program is pleased to announce that there is funding available to Augsburg faculty who wish to mentor undergraduate research assistants to support student or faculty research in applied ethics. Funding for this RA program is generously supported by Paul ’63 and LaVonne (Olson) Batalden ’63, and Stephen ’67 and Sandra Batalden.

Eligibility: Currently enrolled undergraduate Augsburg student with a strong interest in applied ethics research.

Stipend: Mirroring URGO, the selected undergraduate research assistants will receive a $500 stipend at the end of the Spring 2021 semester.

Award reporting: All students who are awarded a Batalden RA position will be required to attend a May 2021 virtual event to briefly report on the impact of their research assistantship. Faculty working with their RA are strongly encouraged to attend as well.

Applications: Faculty should submit their application (see link shown). Students should submit their letter of interest and resume directly to the faculty member they would like to work with prior to faculty completing the Google Form application. Applications will be reviewed until program funds are no longer available.

The AAC had a busy meeting on Monday, February 1. Below are the proposals approved by the committee:

-Temporary grading policies that were implemented in Fall 2020 will extend into Spring 2021.
-New Minor in “Music Production”
-New Theater course: PWC 320 “Writing for Television”
-Removal of the “Social Psychology” and “Psychology and Law” concentrations from the catalog.
-Policy proposal from the TEL subcommittee that seeks to revise the course approval process for courses that are proposed in online or hybrid formats. It assumes that the goal of AAC in the course review process is to see that online/hybrid courses are designed in alignment with course goals/objectives and that the course will be delivered effectively.

In addition to those approvals, the committee received an update on the joint AAC/GAAC working group on a scaffolding policy, which seeks to create a guideline for course level values and a sensical pathway of courses through a major. The policy has not yet been voted on but will be brought back before the committee on February 15.

Finally, the committee worked through a Zoom camera statement recommended by the TEL subcommittee. The final approved version of the statement read as follows, “The Augsburg community will be cognizant of the varied living and personal situations of our community members. In live remote settings, camera on/off status shall not be a determinant of attendance or participation, result in lost points, or in any other way lower a student’s grade. An exception can be made in the case of proctored exams.”

Apply to be in one of Augsburg’s three Public Leadership Scholar Programs: Christensen Scholars, Interfaith Scholars, or Sabo Scholars.
In these programs, you will have the opportunity to participate in a yearlong academic seminar with a cohort of your peers. You will contribute to public leadership on campus and in the wider community in the Christian tradition, through interfaith engagement, or civic life. You will also be able to earn 4 upper division semester credits in the Religion or Political Science and receive a $2,000 scholarship.

Christensen and Interfaith Scholars – Current sophomores and juniors who plan to study on campus all of the 2021-22 academic year.

For students already accepted, applying, or interested in the 2021 River trip there will be an info session and meet & greet on Wed., Feb. 10th.  It will be a chance for students to get to know each other a little, share ideas and questions about the trip, hear some updates on plans for the fall, and talk about some of the prep and mapping work we’ll be doing this summer.  Once the weather warms up, for those who are in town, we’ll plan on a (COVID-safe) bonfire down at the white sand beach on the river.  For now, we’ll be on Zoom (yah, we know . . . ) from 12 – 1 on Wed. Feb. 10th.  The link for the required event registration is below.

2021 Distinguished Contributions Award Nomination Form/Information

In 2021, $22,000 will be awarded to support the scholarly endeavors of full-time faculty. While not limited to the following examples, grants can be used to support faculty scholarship in a variety of ways.

Project Expenses
Equipment purchases
Data collection (travel, data set purchases, etc.)
Collaborator stipends
Studio or instrument charges / time
Summer Stipend (in support of time spent preparing scholarship for an external audience)
Course Reassignment (with approval of Department Chair and Provost)

Grants will likely be in the form of one to two course reassignments, two to three $4,000 grants, and up to six @2,000 grants, but final award levels will be based on the merit and need of individual projects as well as the pool of applications. Partial awards may be given.

The Instructional Course Design initiative in the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) invites proposals for design-based course creation or revision projects to be undertaken during summer 2021 and completed by the end of spring term 2022. Applications are due by NOON on February 15. Full-time faculty who are creating new learning experiences or revising existing ones are encouraged to submit proposals.

The 2021 ICD grants will prioritize course development which advances one or more of the following:
The University’s mission of intentional commitment to diversity and creating inclusive classroom experiences for students.
Active and experiential learning opportunities.
Interdisciplinary and problem-based modes of inquiry.

Faculty working on courses with high enrollments of first-year students as well as those created in anticipation of General Education revisions are particularly encouraged to apply.

Two travel grants of up to $2,500 will be awarded annually to full-time faculty interested in pursuing teaching, research, curriculum development /integration, or other scholarly collaboration with an Augsburg CGEE Global Site or with an existing international partner institution.*

Ideally, the travel grants will be awarded annually for projects in two different regions of the world.
Africa – CGEE Global Site in Namibia, a CGEE local university or NGO partner in Namibia and South Africa
Asia – Augsburg exchange partner universities in China (2), Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea (2), or a CGEE NGO partner in Myanmar
Europe – Augsburg exchange partner universities in Finland, Germany, Greece, Norway, Slovenia and the UK (England).
Latin America – CGEE Global Sites in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, and Nicaragua, or through a CGEE local university or NGO partner.

First Year Experience Teaching Fellows

The First Year Experience/AugSem program is seeking faculty to be a part of a pilot program for instructors teaching an AugSem during the fall 2021.

Goal: Create a cohort of instructors who will meet to discuss anti-racist pedagogy and student learning in relation to working with first year students.

Fellows will need to commit to attending all 1-hour FYE Teaching Fellows meetings in spring 2021 and fall 2021 semesters. Meetings will take place in: March, April, May, September, October and November.

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is pleased to announce that Gilman and Gilman-McCain Scholarship applications are now open. This program enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad.

Gilman offers scholarships of up to $5,000 to U.S. undergraduate students of high financial need participating in credit-bearing programs abroad or virtual international programs that have a start date from May 1, 2021, to April 30, 2022. Students studying critical need languages may be eligible to receive an additional award of up to $3,000.

The application deadline is Tuesday, March 2, 2021, by 11:59pm Pacific Time.
Students will be notified of award status at the end of April 2021.

Apply to be in one of Augsburg’s three Public Leadership Scholar Programs: Christensen Scholars, Interfaith Scholars, or Sabo Scholars.
In these programs, you will have the opportunity to participate in a yearlong academic seminar with a cohort of your peers. You will contribute to public leadership on campus and in the wider community in the Christian tradition, through interfaith engagement, or civic life. You will also be able to earn 4 upper division semester credits in the Religion or Political Science and receive a $2,000 scholarship.

Campus Ministry invites students to participate in an Alternative Spring Break experience March 15-19, 2021, offering the students an opportunity to look deeper at justice issues in the Twin Cities and surrounding area and engage in meaningful, relationship-centered volunteer work.
The justice issues will be examined through several experiences in the Twin Cities and reflection and sharing in order for participants to process their experience communally and individually. These experiences include:
MN Council of Churches Sacred Sites Tour, exploring MN history through a Native lens by visiting sacred sites and through storytelling.
A presentation and activities by the University of MN Mapping Prejudice project, exploring housing inequity due to racial disparities.
A presentation and activities by the Lutheran Social Service of MN (LSS-MN) Advocacy team, providing practical and current information on ways to be advocates.
Activities are subject to change due to COVID-19 protocols.
For volunteer opportunities, students will partner with LSS-MN at Supported Living Homes (SLH), known as ‘group homes.’ SLH provides a family home setting to no more than 4 community members living with differing abilities.
Students will serve in small groups at several homes. Activities may include yard work, building maintenance, meal prep, and social activities alongside those who live in the home. Volunteer work will focus on the relational aspect of volunteering, rather than the actual jobs accomplished. Volunteer activities are designed to help volunteers and residents see one another as individuals rather than ‘other.’
This ASB has been approved to count as an Augsburg Experience. Please indicate on the registration form if you would like that option.
Cost: $25, including the required book & lunch each of the 5 days. Please fill out the registration form & turn in your fee to Janice Dames in the Campus Ministry office.

The Boren Scholarship program is an initiative by the US Federal Government to increase the study of languages by individuals committed to public service careers. The Boren Awards fund intensive language study abroad for U.S. undergrad and grad students. After graduation, Boren winners complete one-year minimum of paid work in the federal government, in areas like national defense, diplomacy, and intelligence. STEM majors can apply for summer scholarships too! The Boren Scholarship can be used to cover a variety of study abroad experiences, including their Flagship Language Initiative programs and others. URGO and Study Abroad provide joint advising on this program and will work with all applicants to select the program, develop budgets and write the application essays.

Scholarship amounts:
Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)
Up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks
Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

This coming September, the next group of students, faculty, and staff will embark from Lake Itasca to begin their hundred-day expedition down the length of the Mississippi River. Students take courses in environmental justice, climate change, politics in the American heartland, outdoor leadership, and undertake individual research projects. In addition to spending time in St. Louis, Memphis, and New Orleans, the group will visit the site of the “Line 3” protest encampment, paddle the “Wild Miles” on the Lower Mississippi, the heavily industrialized “Chemical Corridor,” and finishes by paddling to the Gulf of Mexico, 2,345 river miles from the headwaters. Students interested in joining the program are invited to apply through the Augsburg Study Away web portal.

CTL is joining Bridget Robinson-Riegler, Psychology Professor and member of Faculty Senate, to bring you Fellowship Fridays support sessions. All faculty members and teaching staff are invited to gather and share their experiences with teaching, learning, and advising in this strange new world. – we’ll trade ideas, advice, highs, lows, successes, and failures – or maybe we’ll just plain old vent. Most importantly, we will attempt to inoculate ourselves against one of the more insidious side effects of this pandemic – isolation. So grab a cup of coffee or tea, or pour a glass of wine, and Zoom in to support your fellow instructors and work through this challenging time together.

On Monday, January 11 the AAC met and was introduced to a draft of an upcoming scaffolding proposal. This policy would “help programs set the ‘appropriate’ rigor level for courses, guide programs for the appropriate prerequisites for courses, guide course and program assessment and ultimately, create deliberate pathways to graduation for our students”. A task force was formed to discuss the draft and work through updates to bring back to the committee in February.

A proposal was approved to remove the writing prerequisite from HPE 282, and a student-designed major requesting minor revisions was also passed.

There was an in-depth discussion regarding a recommendation on Zoom camera use from the TEL committee. Their recommendation will return to their subcommittee for further review.

AAC also had a brief introduction to a proposed policy on student advisory grades. There was no vote on this, however. In addition there was a point of information on Augsburg Experiences in our current virtual environment.
