Scholarship Grant

Students, faculty, and staff – you are invited to make nominations for the 2017 Distinguished Contributions to Teaching and Learning awards from CTL. All faculty or full-time staff who have been employed at the college for at least three years are eligible for the awards. You submit a nomination in one three areas:

Teaching
Outstanding teaching encompasses many forms, pedagogies and is not restricted to the classroom. As such, nominations made in this category should demonstrate the nominee’s active engagement with students, creative approaches to instruction, ability to challenge students, and their overall passion for teaching. Up to two awards may be given in this category, one for FULL-TIME faculty and one for ADJUNCT faculty (2 courses per term or less).

Service
Nominations for this award should demonstrate the nominee’s impact on the college, community, or their discipline in a substantial and meaningful way. Nominees that impact the lives of students through supportive, thoughtful, and comprehensive mentoring and advising that go beyond the normal expectations of guiding students are eligible for this award.

Scholarship
Nominees in this category may be recognized for a consistent record of scholarship or a single project. In recognizing multiple forms of intellectual inquiry, nominations should speak directly to both the quality of scholarship as well as its contribution to their discipline, the college, or community.

URGO Phase 1 App Due Feb. 1

Are you looking for a paid summer research opportunity here on campus? URGO applications for 2017 summer research are now available on the URGO website at http://www.augsburg.edu/urgo/. All fields of study welcome!

We have multiple summer opportunities available for students.

URGO Summer Research Program:
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $4,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $2,000 stipend. The program runs from May 15th – July 28th.

URGO Summer Research Assistantships:
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,000 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 1st.

Call for Faculty Summa Committee Members

The Faculty Summa Committee is seeking new members to facilitate panels for graduating seniors seeking the highest Latin honor, Summa Cum Laude. Along with a 3.9 or above GPA, these students meet for one hour with their advisor, a non-major faculty member, and a summa committee member to review a portfolio of their work and to reflect on their experiences at Augsburg. This is a unique opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of some of our most successful students, to meet faculty from outside your home department, and to contribute service to the college. Early-career faculty in particular will benefit from meeting new people and making interdisciplinary connections without onerous time commitments.

CTL Diversity Dialogue Book Group Meeting on Thursday, Jan. 19

The CTL Diversity Dialogue book group will meet for their second and final discussion of “A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota,” a collection of essays edited by Sun Yung Shin, next Thursday, January 19, from 12:00-1:15pm in OGC 100.

All free copies of the book have been claimed. However, members of the community who wish to join the discussion and read the book on their own are welcome to attend. At the first meeting, the group read pages 1-97; for next Thursday they will finish the book (pp. 99-221).

Participants are welcome to bring their own lunch and eat during the discussion. CTL Diversity Fellows Rachel Lloyd, Education, and Mzenga Wanyama, English, will facilitate. All faculty and staff are welcome. Contact ctl@augsburg.edu with questions.

Peace Scholar Applications now being accepted

Augsburg sophomores and juniors with a strong interest in peace and justice issues are invited to apply for the 2017-18 Nobel Peace Prize Scholar Program. Two students will be selected to join a group of 16 students taking courses in Oslo, Norway at the International Summer School and the Nansen Dialogue Center in June & July 2017. Travel and tuition costs are covered by the program. The Peace Scholars also take a leading role in promoting student participation in the Nobel Peace Prize Forum, hosted each year by Augsburg College. Augsburg annually recognizes individuals or groups that have made exemplary contributions to creating an engaging academic learning environment through awards for teaching, scholarship, or service. All faculty (full-time and adjunct) or full-time staff who have been employed at the college for at least three years are eligible for the awards.

We have multiple summer opportunities available for students.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $4,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $2,000 stipend. The program runs from May 15th – July 28th.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,000 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 1st, so start talking with your faculty before break to learn about what research is going on in your department!

Summer Undergraduate Research in Biomedical Ethics

The Mayo Clinic seeks applicants for its 2017 summer undergraduate research program in biomedical ethics. This program is highly competitive and 4-6 students will be selected. Each student will be placed with a faculty mentor for approximately 10 weeks. Students will participate in educational session on bioethics research and lunch meetings with faculty.

Interested applicants should apply to job posting 72700BR: Bioethics Intern on the Mayo Clinic jobs website (http://www.mayoclinic.org/jobs ) by January 13, 2017.

Candidates must attach the following to the online application:

1. Cover letter describing your careers goals & how bioethics research relates to those goals
