Get $50 at Next Week’s COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic

Augsburg will host a free vaccine clinic on Wednesday, April 20, for anyone who would like to receive a first, second, or booster dose of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. This includes second booster shots for those who are eligible.

This event is open to all members of the Augsburg community as well as friends, family, and the general public ages 5 and older. The shots are free and no insurance information will be required. All attendees will receive a $50 gift card from the state of Minnesota, and Augsburg students who attend will also be entered to win an additional $25 gift card.

Eligibility for second booster:
– At least 4 months since first booster
– People age 50+
– People age 12-49 with certain immunocompromising conditions
– People age 18+ who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine for their initial and booster doses

ED Talk April 13: Addressing the Faculty and Staff’s Stress and Burnout in Music Therapy

Under the COVID-19 pandemic situation, many faculty and staff are experiencing a high level of stress and burnout. Finding ways to address this issue is crucial for their overall well-being, and it will positively affect the work and learning environment for all. In this in-person ED Talk, three music therapy faculty will facilitate a mini music therapy session, demonstrating how music can be used to address stress and burnout. An information sheet that contains various ways of using music will be offered as well.

CTL will offer ED Talks (based on the concept of TED Talks) before each faculty meeting from 3:10-3:30pm in Hagfors 151. This year’s theme is “The Future of the Professoriate at Augsburg”, and 2021-2022 Ed talks will be framed under this broad theme that speaks to our “new normal” and beyond.

New May Workshop For Full-Time Faculty: ANTI-Racist Pedagogy

The Center for Teaching and Learning, supported Critical Race and Ethnicity Studies (CRES) donor funds, has designed a two-day Anti-Racist Pedagogy workshop for full-time faculty at Augsburg. This workshop is offered to encourage faculty to further develop their knowledge and skills in evidence-based, anti-racist pedagogy. Because this is a pilot, CTL is limiting the number of participants to 10. Participants will be selected based on their responses to a short application (see link below).

All selected participants will receive a $1000 stipend to (1) participate in the 2-day workshop Tuesday May 17 through Wednesday May 18, 2022 (10:00am to 2:00pm each day; lunch included) and (2) complete a self-determined “final project”. Applicants who are proposing to work on a course scheduled for Fall 2022 and/or who have completed the Augsburg University Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program will be given priority.

Summer Course: Writing for Television – Apply Now

Do you love watching television and have ever wondered how the creators wrote their pilot for that hit TV show you love to watch? Or, are you a writer in a different medium and have always wanted to try your hand at writing for television?

Grow your writing skills this summer with the course PWC 320 “Writing for Television”. This intensive course will be modeled on a professional writer’s room and as such all students will be required to actively participate. Students will be expected to participate in the development and breaking of story while learning to pitch ideas, create outlines, and reading and providing feedback on your colleagues’ work. Each of these steps will be instrumental in aiding you with creating your own pilot!

This course is taught through Augsburg University’s partnership with the nationally acclaimed Playwrights’ Center.

WRITING FOR TELEVISION: Writing the Television Pilot, PWC 320

DATES: June 4 – July 30
(Please note that the course dates do not correspond to the Summer Semester Time 1 and Time 2 schedules. For drop/withdrawal dates, see the course description details in Records and Registration.)

INSTRUCTOR: Taught by Christina Ham, a highly awarded and prolific writer for both stage and screen, including Sweet Tooth for Netflix, THEM for Amazon, and Westworld for HBO. She was named one of “The Top 20 Most-Produced Playwrights of the 2018-19 Season” by American Theatre magazine.

COST: standard summer tuition rate for 4 credits: $1,704

New Fall Course: Expressing Identity Through Art, Music, and Dance

Interested in Native American, First Nations, and Indigenous culture and history? If yes, this new course on expressing identity through art, music, and dance is for you! It is in registration as “Indigenous Forms of Cultural Expression”.

This course honors Indigenous contemporary cultural forms of expression including theater, film, new media, storytelling, literature, dance, and music both in our region and across Turtle Island. Throughout this course students will engage with the meaning of aesthetics in Indigenous culture, interact with guest artists and speakers, and explore how Indigenous culture shapes and is shaped by contemporary cultural contexts.
It fulfills an AIS requirement, a Humanities LAF and is 4 credits. No prerequisites

Applications are Now Open for the 2022-23 PRISM Scholars Program

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Fall 2022 (graduating by December ‘24)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher (scholars will be expected to raise their GPA to 3.0 during program participation)
– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Wednesday, May 18 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Friday, May 27 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application)

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

Celebrate Earth Month in April

April 22nd is Earth Day. We are dedicating the entire month of April to celebrate our Home. Join us in attending the many events we have planned throughout the month!
Come rekindle community, self-heal, and reconnect with the Earth through celebrations during Earth Month. These Environmental Action Committee-supported events will allow you further connection to green spaces on campus, engagement with educational experiences by all forms of teachers, exploration of inclusive career paths, and the opportunity to build solidarity with social justice work bonded by intersectionality. Together in community, learn from Indigenous cultures, be rewarded with rest and find its productivity, fix your bike, have a ball with slow fashion, eat local, and then finish the month with a community bonfire into the sunset.

Movement Workshop This Thursday

Join us in our series of Earth Month Events!
In this Movement Workshop, participants will experience combined styles of yoga, Chhau, and Odissi. It is led by intercultural healer, dancer, and University of Minnesota alum Gayatri Narayanan. This Movement Workshop is grounded in healing justice practices and aims to have participants explore movement through their bodies to better understand the complexities of nature’s ecosystems.

Location: Sabo Center Conference Room, located in the lower level of Anderson Residence Hall just across the street from Old Main. Go to the door marked 720 (to the left of the stairs) on 21st Avenue, go down the stairs, and head into the office suite immediately on your left.
When: Thursday, April 14th – 6-7PM

Two Auggies Win Rossing Physics Scholarship

Two Augsburg students, Edwin Panora and Bjorn Solberg, won a Rossing Physics Scholarship of $5,000. The Rossing Scholarship recognizes exemplary students in physics who attend ELCA schools.

Edwin Panora ’23 is majoring in physics and minoring in computer science. He has worked two summers and academic years in Dr. Dasgupta’s lab. He became enamored with STEM when he built his first computer in high school. He plans on earning a PhD in engineering and wants to build equipment that improves the human condition. This summer he might be conducting research on another campus or returning to Dr. Dasgupta’s lab. In addition to his strong record in research, Edwin is the 3D printer Coordinator, has been involved in the high-power rocket club, served as a physics lab assistant and STEM Peer Mentor. Edwin is also a McNair Scholar.

Bjorn Solberg ’24 is double majoring in physics and mathematics. He worked last summer and this school year in Dr. Stottrup’s lab in collaboration with a lab at the University of MN on a project of an Augsburg alum, Cain Valtierrez who is a PhD candidate. He will return to this position this summer. From a young age Bjorn has read popular science magazines, watched Nova specials and first learned about quantum mechanics and relativity through YouTube channels. When he isn’t being a student or researcher Bjorn is riding his bicycle as an ultra distance cyclist alone and unsupported on trips. He has spent months cycling through South Korea and Japan and this year plans on completing three races of 390 miles, 1,200 miles and 630 miles. Like Edwin, Bjorn participated in the rocket club and plans on earning a PhD, possibly in nuclear fusion as he would like to work on the problem of creating clean nuclear energy.

Congratulations to Bjorn and Edwin and to the Augsburg Physics Department for mentoring these two students.
