Last Call to Clean Out Previous Memorial and Science Hall Offices

The time has come to retrieve any remaining items that were left behind in Memorial Hall or Science Hall offices when Hagfors Center opened.

While the majority of moves were completed at the time, a few offices still contain books, equipment, and other objects belonging to their former occupants. Facilities will begin cleaning out and repurposing all spaces in these areas:

— Third floor of Memorial Hall
— Top two floors of Science Hall

If you want to retrieve anything that got left behind in the move to Hagfors, please do so by November 4, 2022. Contact DPS if you need help accessing an old office space.

Augsburg Youth Theology Institute Student Leadership Position

Interested in helping young people? AYTI offers young people a chance to connect with others. This program is an annual week long summer program for high school students (9th-12th grades). AYTI practices place-based vocational discernment connected to a specific theme. Participants engage in daily reflection with a theology, community based learning, small group relationship building, and worship. Interviews will be on November 12, 2022.

Boren Scholarship for Language Study Abroad

The Boren Scholarship is an initiative by the US Federal Government to increase the study of languages by individuals committed to public service careers. The Boren Scholarship can be used to cover a variety of study abroad experiences where language learning is the focus. URGO and Study Abroad provide joint advising on this program and can assist any applicant in selecting a program, developing budgets and writing/editing application essays.
Scholarship amounts:
Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)
Up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks
Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

IMMIGRATION STORIES & COMMUNITY BUILDING IN RURAL MINNESOTA

Evening Course Meetings: Tuesdays & Thursdays 6:00-9:00pm, for 4 weeks beginning May 9 and ending June 3.
Travel: This course will travel to Walnut Grove, Minnesota for 2 short residencies:
Tuesday, May 23 – Friday, May 26
Thursday, June 1- Saturday, June 3, including a public showing in Walnut Grove on June 2
Course choices:
THR 295 – Topics in Theater, fulfills Fine Arts requirement
SOC 495 – elective for sociology majors or minors
INS 292 — 2 credit optional add-n for students wishing to take additional credits in summer

Changing demographics, especially in rural communities, provide both challenges and opportunities for building strong and equity-minded communities. This course explores these challenges and opportunities with the goal of building community ties as well as connections between Augsburg University students and the residents of Walnut Grove, Minnesota.

While in Walnut Grove, you will meet with community members and conduct interviews to learn more about the residents of the community and their history. Research, stories, and data will be collected and used as material to create a public presentation at the end of the class.
This is a great opportunity to earn credits in a new, dynamic way during summer, without interfering with work schedules, and other summer commitments!

Intern and Study in Northern Ireland This Spring – Free Airfare

This semester-long program is an investigation of a society’s transition from violent conflict to sustainable democracy, a transition that continues to be a fragile and difficult process. On this semester program you will complete an internship – a stellar addition to your resume for post-college job hunting! – in a setting that focuses on one or more of the key themes: Diversity and Inclusion; Equality and Social Justice; Democracy and Active Participation; Human Rights and Social Responsibility.

In addition to your unique internship, you will:

Complete a full 16 credits of Augsburg University credit

Live at Ulster University’s Magee Campus, alongside other international and Irish students

Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study (Earn Up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

Mark Your Calendar – Introduction to Medica (October 26 at 9am)

Open Enrollment, the annual period when benefits-eligible employees make their benefit choices for the coming year, begins Monday, November 7 and continues through Friday, November 18. This is the only time of year when you may elect or change your benefits, unless you experience a qualifying life event.

All benefits-eligible employees are encouraged to attend open enrollment information sessions. The first session will be held on Wednesday, October 26 at 9:00 a.m. in Christensen Center, Marshall Room. If attending virtually, please use the Zoom link below. This 10/26 session focuses on the new health insurance provider, Medica, and discusses the changed network.

Trick-or-Treat Yourself Using TutorMe

Students – don’t forget about TutorMe! It is available to Augsburg students 24/7 and offers tutoring in over 300 subjects from qualified tutors. Students are able to use 3 hours a week; 3 one hour sessions or 6 thirty-minute sessions. You can access TutorMe through any of your Moodle classes. At the top left of your screen there is an orange tab to see the side panel of resources. As you scroll down, you will see the “Augsburg Tools” section and underneath is the link to TutorMe. All Saints Service on November 2

We will hold an All Saints service in chapel November 2 at 10:40 am. The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. At this service we remember the saints who’ve gone before us. We’ll also remember loved ones who have died, especially in this past year. We celebrate and remember through song and prayer. Please submit names you would like included in the service to the campus ministry office by emailing Janice Dames at dames@augsburg.edu by noon on November 1.

Panel: Parenting a Child with a Dis/Ability and Transition

We currently observe a rise in new types and uses of
the classification of people with dis/abilities, especially targeting and marginalizing individuals at the transition stage. Othering and
problem-categorization are characteristics across educational settings and practices. They are taken up in everyday life to handle self and others, in ever-new rounds of medicalization, and generally as self-presentations in daily life, including career opportunities.

This implicates and challenges special education as well as other human sciences.

Join us for a rich and meaningful conversation on individuals with dis/abilities’ rights, transition options, dreams, and hopes about the future.

Oct. 26-28 the Walker is screening Danis Goulet’s newest film “Night Raiders”. The year is 2043. A military occupation controls disenfranchised cities in postwar North America and children are property of the State. Niska (Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers), a desperate Cree woman, joins an underground band of vigilantes to infiltrate a State children’s academy and get her daughter back. Utilizing the sci-fi genre as an Indigenous storytelling portal, Goulet’s timely Night Raiders is a female-driven dystopian drama about resilience, courage, and love. Produced by Taika Waititi. 2021, Canada/New Zealand, DCP, in English and Cree with English subtitles, 101 min.

Salsa Night This Thursday

Come join us in Sateren Auditorium on Thursday, October 27th at 7:30 p.m. for an energetic and fun-filled evening! The Augsburg Jazz Ensemble becomes the Augsburg ¡Salsa Orchestra! to perform mambos, boleros, guanguancó, and salsa as part of a celebration of the musical heritage in the Americas and is joined by the Vocal Jazz singers and soloists Ashley Litzinger and Vincent Rosa-Chavez. We are also joined by Jonathan Alarcón from Honduras as a performer and as artist-in-residence. Accomplished in a wide range of styles and with his first love being jazz, Jonathan’s first appearance at Augsburg was as a member of Cienaños, a Honduran band known for their energetic performance and calls for social justice in Central America, as a part of the Nobel Peace Prize Forum in 2017. Don’t miss out!
