Your Summer Plans: Fine Arts and Augsburg Experience

Do something different this summer–explore a new region of Minnesota! Join the summer course to earn your Fine Arts credit *and* Augsburg Experience!

IMMIGRATION STORIES & COMMUNITY BUILDING IN RURAL MINNESOTA

Evening Course Meetings: Tuesdays & Thursdays 6:00-9:00pm, for 4 weeks beginning May 9 and ending June 3.
Travel: This course will travel to Walnut Grove, Minnesota for 2 short residencies:
Tuesday, May 23 – Friday, May 26
Thursday, June 1- Saturday, June 3, including a public showing in Walnut Grove on June 2
Course choices:
THR 295 – Topics in Theater, fulfills Fine Arts requirement
SOC 495 – elective for sociology majors or minors
INS 292 — 2 credit optional add-n for students wishing to take additional credits in summer

Changing demographics, especially in rural communities, provide both challenges and opportunities for building strong and equity-minded communities. This course explores these challenges and opportunities with the goal of building community ties as well as connections between Augsburg University students and the residents of Walnut Grove, Minnesota.

While in Walnut Grove, you will meet with community members and conduct interviews to learn more about the residents of the community and their history. Research, stories, and data will be collected and used as material to create a public presentation at the end of the class.
This is a great opportunity to earn credits in a new, dynamic way during summer, without interfering with work schedules, and other summer commitments!

Intern and Study in Northern Ireland This Spring – Free Airfare

This semester-long program is an investigation of a society’s transition from violent conflict to sustainable democracy, a transition that continues to be a fragile and difficult process. On this semester program you will complete an internship – a stellar addition to your resume for post-college job hunting! – in a setting that focuses on one or more of the key themes: Diversity and Inclusion; Equality and Social Justice; Democracy and Active Participation; Human Rights and Social Responsibility.

In addition to your unique internship, you will:

Undergraduate Art and Literary Magazine Open for Submissions

THE TOWER magazine is open for submissions from undergraduates currently enrolled in colleges and universities within the U.S.

Founded in 1952, THE TOWER is an award-winning print annual that publishes the best in poetry, fiction, visual art, and creative nonfiction by undergraduate students. This is the first year we have extended eligibility for submissions to students beyond the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. We’d love to see work from Augsburg students!

Our open-ended theme for the 2023 edition is Patchwork, which for us connotes crafting, patience, attention, accretion, salvage, repair, diversity, togetherness, endurance—and more! We’d love to see what Patchwork means for you and your work. Submissions are free and online, with a deadline of November 30, 2022. Critical Language Scholarship

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is
– A fully-funded eight to ten week language and cultural immersion program
– Students receive eight credits of intensive language instruction
– Part of a US State Department initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages critical to national security and economic prosperity
– There are 14 languages that applicants can select from. Alumni of the program also receive one year of non-competitive eligibility (NCE) status when applying for federal government jobs

Competitive applicants will need
– To illustrate a commitment to language learning,
– A strong academic record and potential to succeed in a rigorous academic setting
– Ability to adapt to an intensive program and challenging cultural environment.
– Most programs do not require experience studying the selected language. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Applications are due Tuesday, November 15, 2022 by 8:00 PM EST / 5 PM PST.

Free Arabic, Russian, or Chinese Language Instruction

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) program now offers CLS Spark. This is a virtual initiative for undergraduate students to lean essential languages for America’s engagement with the world.

As a virtual program, CLS Spark allows students to have an immersive language and cultural experience with international communities. Spark participants will spend approximately 8 weeks during the summer learning either Arabic, Russian, or Chinese through online classes and activities facilitated by native speakers. You do not need to have any prior knowledge of these languages.

– 10 hours of intense live group instruction a week
– Cultural activities and individual consultations
– Monthly professional development workshops and inclusive support

Participants of CLS Spark will receive:
– Language instruction and cultural programming;
– Textbooks and language learning materials
– Language gains certified using the widely-recognized ACTFL OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) assessment
– Non-competitive eligibility for U.S. government employment for up to three -years after the program completion;
– Academic credit issued through Bryn Mawr College; and
– A stipend towards equipment and connectivity costs (for example, a web camera or microphone).

Feeling Spooky About Midterms? Use TutorMe

Students – don’t forget about TutorMe! It is available to Augsburg students 24/7 and offers tutoring in over 300 subjects from qualified tutors. Students are able to use 3 hours a week; 3 one hour sessions or 6 thirty-minute sessions. You can access TutorMe through any of your Moodle classes. At the top left of your screen there is an orange tab to see the side panel of resources. As you scroll down, you will see the “Augsburg Tools” section and underneath is the link to TutorMe. Sierra Club Calling Volunteers for Outdoor Programming

The Sierra Club is the nation’s oldest environmental organization. They are looking for volunteers to support our local outdoor programming. They offer programs open to the general public, as well as population specific programs for BIPOC, youth, and MilVet groups. Time commitment is generally a few hours a month. Outdoor programs happen on all days of the week and times, so they likely can fit most schedules. Volunteer stipends may be available.

Advent Vespers Volunteer Opportunities

The 43rd annual Advent Vespers is just around the corner! Be a part of this wonderful event at the start of the Advent season. We will be in person again at Central Lutheran Church and need many volunteers.

Join the processional party by carrying a bell, candle, torch, or banner! There will be a practice on November 29 and an open dress rehearsal on Thursday, December 1 at 8:00 pm in addition to the Advent Vespers services on Friday, December 2 at 7:00 pm and Saturday, December 3 at 2 pm and 5 pm (with a hearty snack between the services).
