Come to the Writing Center

The Writing Center is open!

The Augsburg Writing Center offers both online and in-person tutoring. Skilled students will work with you one-on-one at whatever stage of writing you are in – the idea-development stage, the drafting stage, and the revision stage – and can show you how to choose an appropriate essay topic, how to develop a thesis statement and paragraphs, how to revise your essay, or assist with any other writing needs you may have. Tutors will be alert listeners and ask questions, and will not judge or evaluate the work in progress. For more information, please visit our website. We look forward to seeing you!

GenEd(it) Group Next Steps

Hello,

A warm welcome to our new and returning Augsburg community members. The GenEd(it) Group is working to finalize a set of proposed revisions to our general education curriculum (the set of requirements all undergraduate students share) this fall.

An overview of planned next steps are:
September: GenEd(it) Group creates draft version(s) of proposed revisions
October: Invite response to draft version(s) from faculty, staff and students
November: GenEd(it) Group finalizes proposed revisions
December: Shared governance begins

Since the start of this initiative in spring 2023, the GenEd(it) Group:
-Examined the rationale for general education revision
-Conducted a comparison of requirements across institutions
-Surveyed the Augsburg community about learning goals
-Convened a well-attended faculty workshop in May

We will be inviting feedback on the draft version(s) of proposed revisions to our general education curriculum next month. Specific details are forthcoming.
We look forward to hearing from you in the coming weeks.

Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy and International Affairs

The purpose of the Junior Summer Institute (JSI) Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field. Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations.

Selected participants spend the summer at one of seven participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, Harvard, University of Washington, or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2024 and August 2025. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.

Apply for Mayo Innovation Scholars Program

Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 2-3 undergraduate science students, 1-2 undergraduate business/economics student, 2 Augsburg faculty, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the project or innovation and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,500. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

Interested in Research and Graduate School? Apply to the TRIO McNair Scholars Program

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2023 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2024 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2024. Students from all majors are welcome to apply, though preference is given to applicants that are interested in pursuing a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all participant slots are filled.

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through coursework, academic advising, workshops, and involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($6000) with an Augsburg faculty member during Summer of 2024.

The McNair Scholars Program is federally-funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, applicants must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college or university) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred). Unsure if you qualify? Earn 8 credits and your Augsburg experience in just a few weeks, while exploring two of the greatest European cities — Paris and Berlin – through the prism of history and photography. Visit museums, meet with speakers from across different industries, and so much more!

Are you registered to vote? Today is National Voter Registration Day. To vote in Minnesota, you must be:

– A U.S. citizen
– At least 18 years old on Election Day
– A resident of Minnesota for 20 days
– Not currently incarcerated for a felony conviction

In Minnesota, you can register to vote online or on paper up to 21 days before Election Day. You can also register to vote on Election Day (November 7) at your polling place.

Does Youth Political Activism Work in Southern Africa?

The Augsburg community is invited to join CGEE in welcoming Pinias Kashedi, Global Faculty from Namibia, on campus! He will be hosting a talk about the marginalization of youth in Southern Africa, titled, “Education Capture and Youth Marginalization in Namibia.” A brief description is below:

In 2023, economic opportunities for young people in Namibia are drying up. The country is facing nearly 90,000 unemployed graduates, many with advanced educational qualifications, in a nation with a total population of approximately 2.5 million. With one of the highest unemployment rates in Africa, there is a prevailing belief among Namibian youth that political activism does not yield results.

Colonial and social injustices are a factor to these contemporary issues, but also an inherited education system which perpetuates economic and social marginalization of young people. What measures, if any, is the Namibian government undertaking to address these pressing concerns? Mr. Kashedi will expound upon these matters from his point of view as a Namibian citizen who has worked with youth for many years, during this captivating “GlobalEd” talk right here at Augsburg University.
