The show runs for approximately 2 hours with an intermission.
Professor Shae Pemberton is a humble, secretive inventor who leads a quiet life focused on science. However, as her loyal assistant Matilda reminds her, fixing broken toys, clocks, and household gadgets is what she must do to pay the bills. When her friend Lawrence visits her with a business proposal from two shady fellows, buried secrets from her past resurface. As political unrest sweeps over the great city of New Providence, unexpected (and weird!) events start to unravel and threaten to destroy everything Pemberton holds dear, perhaps even the Crown itself! The Clockwork Professor is an action-packed adventure of fantastical science fiction with a steampunk twist.
Content Disclosure: The Clockwork Professor is a comedy intended for young adult and adult audiences. This play includes the use of some strong language and contains suggested nudity. There are also simulated fights, physical restraint, and a bit of romantic display of affection. Ah! And there will be some occasional theatrical smoke, too!

The Boren Scholarship is an initiative by the US Federal Government to increase the study of languages by individuals committed to public service careers throughout the government. The Boren Scholarship can be used to cover a variety of study abroad experiences where language learning is the focus. URGO and Study Abroad provide joint advising on this program and can assist any applicant in selecting a program and writing/editing application essays.
Scholarship amounts:
Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)
Up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks
Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

On Wednesday, November 1, we will hold an All Saints service at 10:40 am in Hoversten. The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. In this service we remember loved ones who have died, especially in this past year. We celebrate and remember through song and prayer. Election Day is Tuesday, November 7. There are no classes at Augsburg on Election Day and it’s a holiday for faculty and staff in order to make it easier for our community to vote, volunteer, and take part in the democratic process.

Augsburg CGEE invites everyone to join award-winning Cuban journalist and filmmaker, Liz Oliva Fernández, for a screening and Q&A of two new Belly of the Beast documentaries!
Gracie Award-winning Cuban journalist Liz Oliva Fernández will visit Augsburg University to present a new documentary film, Cuba in the Crosswinds [working title], produced by the independent media outlet, Belly of the Beast. Filmed this year in New Jersey and Washington D.C., Cuba in the Crosswinds exposes the economic and political interests driving U.S. policy toward Cuba under the Biden administration, which has mainly kept intact Trump’s “maximum pressure” sanctions on Cuba, fueling an unprecedented wave of migration from the island.

My name is Dean Harris, and I am a doctoral student in the Clinical Psychology Department at Augsburg University. I am conducting this study as partial fulfillment of my doctoral degree, with Dr. Patricia Hopkins-Smith as my advisor.
You are being invited to participate in a research study on investigating influences of intrapersonal factors on the relationship between casual sex and mental health. The Writing Center is open!
The Augsburg Writing Center offers both online and in-person tutoring. Skilled students will work with you one-on-one at whatever stage of writing you are in – the idea-development stage, the drafting stage, and the revision stage – and can show you how to choose an appropriate essay topic, how to develop a thesis statement and paragraphs, how to revise your essay, or assist with any other writing needs you may have. Dixie Shafer of URGO and Lara Crombie of the TRIO McNair Scholars program will lead the workshop for students, staff, and faculty on identifying and applying for summer research opportunities such as National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs).
The workshop will be followed by a panel for students featuring student and alumni research experiences and a panel for faculty and staff on supporting equitable access and participation in research programs.
All attendees are invited to stay for a community dinner following the workshop and panels.

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.
Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2024 (graduating by May ‘26)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)
Application deadline: Tuesday, November 28th at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Wednesday, December 6th (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application).

During the semester you do research into an area you are passionate about and we partner with a number of organizations and communities in community-based learning. This type of learning provides students with the opportunity to connect their gifts, skills, and interests with an organization, group, or issue. Your work informs our classroom discussions and course work while also giving back to the community in valuable and reciprocal ways.

The Augsburg Biology Department’s rooftop greenhouse grows an appreciation for and deeper understanding of the plants of our planet. The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Thursday of every month during the semester, from noon to 3pm. The Augsburg community is invited to come see what we’ve got growing on, enjoy the tropical atmosphere and marvel at hundreds of plant species from all over the world.

Whether or not you have formal leadership experience, this course will benefit all students by bringing out your strengths and opening doors to new opportunities. The Augsburg Student Music Therapy Association (ASMTA) is looking for musicians to perform for our (hopefully) annual Riverside Jams concert! The concert will be held in Sateren Auditorium on November 18th from 2-4:30pm and is a fundraiser to support music therapy students to attend conferences, including the Great Lakes Region Music Therapy Conference held in Milwaukee next March. Augsburg Writing Center Tutor
Writing Center tutors will work with fellow Augsburg students, individually or in small groups, to
provide guidance and assistance in writing for courses in any discipline, at all stages of the writing process. Tutors may also work with students on extra-curricular writing such as applications, personal statements, and creative work. The purpose of our Writing Center work is to help students build their skills, their confidence, and their comfort level as writers and as students. As a part of this center, tutors will learn about writing in both practical and theoretical terms—as a way of thinking, a means of communicating with others, and a practice that varies across disciplines and across social and cultural conditions, also reaching into the practical aspects of one’s career. Additionally, as members of the Writer Center team, tutors are required to attend regular meetings for continuing education and discussions about Center business.
Responsibilities
– Assist, individually or (occasionally) in small groups, students who seek help with their writing for a minimum of 5 hours a week
– Attend biweekly mandatory meetings prepared, having read or written any assigned material
– Attend two Staff workshops per academic year
– Assist in ongoing tasks (e.g., greeting students, collating data, keeping the space clean and orderly) to ensure the Center runs smoothly and efficiently
– As time allows during shifts, assist with creating Writing Center materials, conducting relevant research, marketing materials, and helping with projects such as designing the center space, assessment, and building connections across the campus community.
– Present Writing Center orientations (in the Center or in classes) on occasion
– Adhere to Writing Center policies and enforce Center rules
– Refer students to other campus resources when appropriate
– Meet with the Center Director as part of ongoing tutor evaluation and complete self-evaluations
– Maintain payroll and Center data records thoroughly and on time
– May also have opportunities to participate in specialty student and faculty development workshops
– Commit to ongoing education to improve tutoring techniques and enhance culturally responsive teaching practices

About The Confluence:
The Confluence (formally the Augsburg Youth Theology Institute) is an annual week-long summer program for high school students (9th-12th grades) focused on vocational discernment. The experience offers young people an intensive opportunity for vocational and theological reflection in a college setting. It is a collaborative effort between Augsburg University’s Christensen Center for Vocation and Campus Ministry.
The Christensen Center for Vocation at Augsburg University is looking to hire a 15-20 hour/ week Program Manager for The Confluence. The Program Manager is responsible for the management and implementation of The Confluence. The Program Manager works with the Executive Director of the Christensen Center for Vocation to provide vision and direction for The Confluence. The Program Manger works with the Chaplain and Program Assistant to execute the operational plans of The Confluence.
Primary Responsibilities
– Plan, schedule, and facilitate staff team meetings, providing leadership structure for the team during and between meetings, helping the team identify the work that needs to be done, assigning who will do it, and tracking its completion.
– Work with Chaplain to hire and train Augsburg University students as summer staff.
– Supervise student workers and summer staff.
– Plan, coordinate, and facilitate community-based learning experiences during the week of AYTI.
– Develop program schedule for the week of The Confluence.
– Function as the key programmatic leader during The Confluence.
– Support program staff during The Confluence.
Additional Responsibilities
– Create and manage a communication/marketing plan to promote the Confluence.
– Oversee program evaluation.
– Manage budget.
– Create grant reports.
– Represent The Confluence to CCV and across the university
– Build partnerships across campus that ensure efficient and effective program development and implementation.
– Build external partnerships with synods, congregations, and ministry leaders the ensure participation and funding.

Augsburg CGEE invites everyone to join award-winning Cuban journalist and filmmaker, Liz Oliva Fernández, for a screening and Q&A of two new Belly of the Beast documentaries!
Gracie Award-winning Cuban journalist Liz Oliva Fernández will visit Augsburg University to present a new documentary film, Cuba in the Crosswinds [working title], produced by the independent media outlet, Belly of the Beast. Filmed this year in New Jersey and Washington D.C., Cuba in the Crosswinds exposes the economic and political interests driving U.S. policy toward Cuba under the Biden administration, which has mainly kept intact Trump’s “maximum pressure” sanctions on Cuba, fueling an unprecedented wave of migration from the island.

For Native American Heritage Month, American Indian Student Services is sponsoring an Indigenous Book club where we will read Shutter by Ramona Emerson. Rita Todacheene is a forensic photographer working for the Albuquerque police force. Her excellent photography skills have cracked many cases—she is almost supernaturally good at capturing details. In fact, Rita has been hiding a secret: she sees the ghosts of crime victims who point her toward the clues that other investigators overlook. We will meet on Tuesday, Nov. 14th from 5:30pm-7pm to discuss the book and have dinner. RSVP is limited to 20 people. Students, staff, and faculty are welcome to participate. The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2024 (graduating by May ‘26)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

In IT this week we are saying farewell to Matt Schornstein (’04) who has been in the department since 2004. Matt has led our infrastructure team since 2011. He and his team run the IT you use daily but don’t see — WiFi, wired networks, servers. Matt has led that team through over a decade of incredible growth and change in technologies. And with the shared services agreement in 2016, he added Luther Seminary’s network to what he oversaw.
We appreciate all that Matt has accomplished and he will be sorely missed. Matt’s last day is Friday the 27th. We wish him well on his next IT adventure.

Professor Shae Pemberton is a humble, secretive inventor who leads a quiet life focused on science. However, as her loyal assistant Matilda reminds her, fixing broken toys, clocks, and household gadgets is what she must do to pay the bills. When her friend Lawrence visits her with a business proposal from two shady fellows, buried secrets from her past resurface. As political unrest sweeps over the great city of New Providence, unexpected (and weird!) events start to unravel and threaten to destroy everything Pemberton holds dear, perhaps even the Crown itself! The Clockwork Professor is an action-packed adventure of fantastical science fiction with a steampunk twist.
Content Disclosure: The Clockwork Professor is a comedy intended for young adult and adult audiences. This play includes the use of some strong language and contains suggested nudity. There are also simulated fights, physical restraint, and a bit of romantic display of affection. Ah! And there will be some occasional theatrical smoke, too!

This course connects your research interests and your desire to work with BIPOC communities, organizations, and neighborhoods in Minneapolis/St. Paul. During the semester you do research into an area you are passionate about and we partner with a number of organizations and communities in community-based learning. This type of learning provides students with the opportunity to connect their gifts, skills, and interests with an organization, group, or issue. Your work informs our classroom discussions and course work while also giving back to the community in valuable and reciprocal ways.

The Augsburg Student Music Therapy Association (ASMTA) is looking for musicians to perform for our (hopefully) annual Riverside Jams concert! The concert will be held in Sateren Auditorium on November 18th from 2-4:30pm and is a fundraiser to support music therapy students to attend conferences, including the Great Lakes Region Music Therapy Conference held in Milwaukee next March. Whether or not you have formal leadership experience, this course will benefit all students by bringing out your strengths and opening doors to new opportunities. – General cleaning of area(s) of responsibility including waste removal, vacuuming, carpet cleaning, detail cleaning of restrooms, entries, common areas, wall washing, Kivac as needed, spot cleaning walls, staircases, dust mop, and mop or auto scrub floors.
– Detailing area(s) which will include dusting, edge vacuuming, cleaning light fixtures, cleaning and polishing drinking fountains, and straightening furniture and accessories.
– Buffing floors, Cleaning Carpets, and deep cleaning restrooms as needed.
– Clean all glass entry doors, inside and out. throughout the shift, as needed.
– Assist in the coverage of open areas due to vacations, sick calls, and open positions.
Additional Examples of Work Performed:
– Completing work orders.
– Clean and maintain all custodial equipment and closets according to set standards.
– Clean outside entryways, up to 15 feet from the door, and keep them free of debris and snow.
– Summer and school break apartment turn cleaning.

Dia de los Muertos Community Altar Unveiling on October 30
Latinx Student Services, ALAS, and Campus Ministry invite you to a celebration of Dia de los Muertos and a Community Altar Unveiling on Monday, October 30, beginning at 10:40 am in Hoversten Chapel. We will meet in the chapel to learn about the history of this important tradition and will join a procession led by Kalpulli Yaocenoxtli to the altar in Oyaté Commons. On Wednesday, November 1, we will hold an All Saints service at 10:40 am in Hoversten. The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. In this service we remember loved ones who have died, especially in this past year. We celebrate and remember through song and prayer. Augsburg CGEE invites everyone to join award-winning Cuban journalist and filmmaker, Liz Oliva Fernández, for a screening and Q&A of two new Belly of the Beast documentaries!
Gracie Award-winning Cuban journalist Liz Oliva Fernández will visit Augsburg University to present a new documentary film, Cuba in the Crosswinds [working title], produced by the independent media outlet, Belly of the Beast. Filmed this year in New Jersey and Washington D.C., Cuba in the Crosswinds exposes the economic and political interests driving U.S. policy toward Cuba under the Biden administration, which has mainly kept intact Trump’s “maximum pressure” sanctions on Cuba, fueling an unprecedented wave of migration from the island.

In recognition of First-Generation College Celebration Day (Nov. 8), the departments of TRIO Student Support Services, TRIO McNair Scholars, and Multicultural Life will be hosting events that highlight the first-generation college experience during the week of November 6. These events will be geared to students, but all of the Augsburg community is welcome to attend. More information will be provided in the upcoming weeks.
In addition to this programming, we’re asking faculty and staff to complete this brief First-Generation Augsburg Community Survey. The information collected will be used to create ongoing resources and support for first-generation students here at Augsburg. Please provide as much information as you’re comfortable sharing. The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.
Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2024 (graduating by May ‘26)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)
Application deadline: Tuesday, November 28th at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Wednesday, December 6th (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application).
Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

In IT this week we are saying farewell to Matt Schornstein (’04) who has been in the department since 2004. Matt has led our infrastructure team since 2011. He and his team run the IT you use daily but don’t see — WiFi, wired networks, servers. Matt has led that team through over a decade of incredible growth and change in technologies. And with the shared services agreement in 2016, he added Luther Seminary’s network to what he oversaw.
We appreciate all that Matt has accomplished and he will be sorely missed. Matt’s last day is Friday the 27th. We wish him well on his next IT adventure.
