Wednesday – Teachers and Facilitators: Training in Supporting Civil Dialogue Using Paideia Discussion

submitted by finka2@augsburg.edu

Join CTL Director Rachel Lloyd for this participatory demonstration lesson and introduction to the Paideia (pie DAY a) approach to designing and facilitating text-based discussions. In today’s challenging political climate, the skills of civil, civic-minded, and evidence-based democratic deliberation are a necessity. Paideia is a pedagogy that encourages student-centered, democratic discussions around a common text. It can be used with all ages and in all subject areas to foster a more inclusive learning environment.

Participants are asked to read the linked short story “Too Many Rules” (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1u08evSPnYcx3ioq_USedg2kBIUj2z4VVMeZqlYt3jnE/edit) by Anishinabeg-Ojibwe author, Anne Dunn, prior to the workshop, and come ready to discuss the text using this focusing short reading guide (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lWnTCztWEjwg0fK11am71Yxn5022hj9-/edit).

This training is supported by the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship.

Stress and Anxiety Are Common—CWC Can Help

submitted by cwc@augsburg.edu

Common issues students talk about in counseling:

– Feeling consistently low or sad
– Persistent anxiety
– Handling a breakup
– Loss of a loved one
– Past or current experiences of trauma or abuse
– Academic pressures and performance
– Housing or roommate tension
– Challenges with family members or at home
– Experiencing discrimination or micro-aggressions
– Exploring gender identity

It can be hard to make space for an in-person appointment. That’s why Augsburg has partnered with BetterMynd, an online therapy platform, to offer students access to free teletherapy sessions from a diverse network of licensed mental health counselors.

Note: BetterMynd is a new option for Auggies. Free in-person or virtual counseling services are still available to all students from the Center for Wellness and Counseling! To schedule with CWC, email cwc@augsburg.edu.
