Summary of Position
The position is responsible for directing the University’s 24/7 Communications Center and Dispatch Services for DPS. The position directs internal and external emergency communications, parking administration and enforcement, and the all-access control center.
Primary Responsibilities
– Supervises student employees working within the communications and parking areas within DPS, including but not limited to hiring, training, scheduling, and performance management.
– Directs campus parking, including permit sales/revenue generation, parking violations appeals, community and/or special event parking.
– Responsible for planning and implementation of awareness and prevention programming and campaigns, including safety tips, sexual misconduct (e.g., sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, stalking), and alcohol/other drugs in conjunction with campus partners.
– Provides oversight for all building access software and management.
– Manages key and fob inventory, tracking, and replacement.
– Assists management with coordinating the communications and parking budget, including vendor software, supplies, and parking revenue.
– Shares 24/7 rotation for on-call responsibility to respond to emergency situations and/or urgent matters for DPS.
– Responsible for testing, maintenance, and upgrades of all software related to parking, access control, and dispatch.
– Assist with DPS, conduct, Title IX, and other investigations and adjudications.
– Manage creation and distribution of student IDs and bus/light rail transit cards.
Additional Responsibilities
– Audits required logs, reports, and record maintenance related to communications and infrastructure.
– Manages and implements software and radio systems.
– Maintains licensing and compliance through Federal Communications Commission, including maintaining required logs.
– Manages switchboard, including frequent updates with staffing changes.
– Orders and distributes office supplies and other materials.
– Collects and deposits funds related to parking fines and fob replacements.
– Performs other duties as apparent and assigned by supervisor.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
– Frequent phone and computer use.
– Occasional strenuous physical conditions or potentially extreme temperature conditions, such as medical or security emergencies, indoors or outdoors.
– Infrequent encounters with potentially hostile or injured person(s) as part of the work environment with DPS.
– Occasional irregular or extended hours that may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

Skilled Augsburg students will work with you one-on-one at whatever stage of writing you are in – the idea-development stage, the drafting stage, and the revision stage – and can show you how to choose an appropriate essay topic, how to develop a thesis statement and paragraphs, how to revise your essay, or assist with any other writing needs you may have. The Dean of Students Office, Campus Life, and Dining Services are excited to host the Fall 2024 Late Night Breakfast! Join us at The Commons on Monday, December 2 from 9 to 10:30 p.m.
The Late Night Breakfast is an end-of-semester tradition where all undergraduate students (residential and commuter!) are invited to partake in a FREE late-night hot breakfast meal prior to the start of finals week. We will be holding a prize drawing for an Apple AirPods Pro 2 Wireless Earbuds for all students who attend. Students need to be present to enter the drawing but do not need to stay for the duration of the event to win a prize.
The menu includes: french toast, cheesy eggs and vegetable strata, Halal breakfast sausage patties, pork sausage links, hash brown potato triangles, scrambled eggs, sushi, gourmet coffee, ice cream sundaes, and mounds of baked goods.

It is with mixed emotions that we announce that Charlotte Swanson, our Student Employment Specialist extraordinaire, has decided to embark on a new chapter. Charlotte’s official last day at Augsburg will be Friday December 6.
Charlotte joined Augsburg in January 2020, initially planning to support the Human Resources team for just a few months. Nearly five years later, her dedication, resourcefulness, and kindness have transformed our department and left a lasting mark on the university. From building and streamlining HR and student employment processes to offering compassionate guidance to countless Auggies and their supervisors, Charlotte has been a dependable and encouraging presence for everyone she’s worked with. Her ability to lead with care and enthusiasm (and a great playlist) has enriched the Human Resources team and the entire Augsburg community.
Charlotte’s impact will undoubtedly be felt for years to come, and her presence will be deeply missed. Please join us in celebrating her contributions and wishing her all the best for her next chapter.
We will celebrate Charlotte’s time at Augsburg with a farewell open house on Thursday, December 5, from 1–3 p.m. in the Human Resources office (Memorial 20).

During the June 9, 2020, town hall for faculty and staff, President Pribbenow announced seven new equity initiatives born out of response to the murder of George Floyd and Augsburg’s renewed commitment to accelerate and expand upon our university’s efforts to promote equity and inclusion during a national moment of racial and social justice reawakening. One of these initiatives was the requirement of Augsburg faculty and staff to complete an annual anti-racism training.

Please join us in Hoversten Chapel at 11:30 to hear Moumita Dasgupta share her story in the final installment of the semester of the Uncovering Vocation series, co-sponsored by Campus Ministry and the Christensen Center for Vocation.
Moumita Dasgupta joined the Department of Physics as an Assistant Professor Fall 2019. Prior to this appointment, she was a Lecturer in the Department of Physics at Smith College and a teaching fellow at Amherst College. She specializes in soft matter and biophysics.
She is passionate about undergraduate teaching and adapts a combination of traditional pedagogical styles and more modern active learning, project-based learning, and design thinking methodologies. She cares about creating an inclusive learning environment in the classroom, where individuals with diversity of socio-economic background, outlook and culture feel equally welcome to participate and contribute.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, makes debate teams possible in Twin Cities schools for 1,400+ students! For the first time, MNUDL is now an Augsburg Experience program.
You can support our youth and gain valuable skills as part of the AUGEX5B Special Immersion: MN Urban Debate League course.
Benefits of participating:
• This counts toward your Augsburg Experience requirement, but it’s a 0-credit course, so you do NOT have to pay for participation.
• No specific major requirement!
• By participating, you can become qualified to judge multiple types of debate, which can lead to future paying gigs with the MNUDL!
**WE WELCOME SPANISH SPEAKERS!** There are unique opportunities to engage Spanish-speaking kids and celebrate the beauty of the language through this Augsburg Experience.
The spring semester course will take place from 12:30-1:30 PM on Fridays. The location will be the Anderson Hall basement (near the Campus Cupboard and MNUDL office.)

The Youth Studies minor is an interdisciplinary exploration of young peoples’ lived realities and opportunities to support them. The minor is designed to supplement a student’s current course of study particularly if that student is considering youth work in the future. Youth Studies students develop constructive and critical lenses for understanding society’s perceptions and treatment of young people. These lenses also shed light on young peoples’ processes of constructing meaning and culture. Students in this minor also gain practical skills through experiential learning opportunities. The underlying philosophy of the Youth Studies minor is one that supports young people’s voice and power. Young people are often targeted as a menace to society, but we see young people as gifted and powerful agents of positive change. Students in this minor will learn to take this approach to youth work into their chosen professions.
YST 320: Working with Children & Youth (4 credits, MWF) will be offered this spring with Professor Terrance Kwame-Ross. It will discuss interdisciplinary approaches to working with young people.

HIS 440: Black Migrations to the United States
Spring 2024

Taught by Prof. Ibrahim Hirsi
An estimated 48 million people in the United States identify as Black. Their migrations—forced and voluntary—began in 1619 and continue to the present day. They came from Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and South and Central America. Many are descendants of enslaved people; others have emerged from places like Somalia and Ethiopia and Ghana and Jamaica. This course provides an overview of the journeys and experiences of African Americans and Black migrants and examines their unbroken ties—imagined and real—to the African continent. The course draws from a wide range of interdisciplinary sources, exposing students to major historical themes and significant Black figures. Through lectures, discussions, and thesis-driven writing assignments, students gain a substantive understanding of the African diaspora’s historical formation and develop critical reading and writing skills essential to successful careers. (Prerequisite: ENL 111)
Prof. Ibrahim Hirsi is finishing his Ph.D. in Immigration History at the University of Minnesota, after working as a journalist for the Sahan Journal, MinnPost, and Minnesota Public Radio. In addition to English, he speaks Somali, Arabic, and Swahili.

HIS 440: Black Migrations to the United States
Spring 2024

An estimated 48 million people in the United States identify as Black. Their migrations—forced and voluntary—began in 1619 and continue to the present day. They came from Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and South and Central America. Many are descendants of enslaved people; others have emerged from places like Somalia and Ethiopia and Ghana and Jamaica. This course provides an overview of the journeys and experiences of African Americans and Black migrants and examines their unbroken ties—imagined and real—to the African continent. The course draws from a wide range of interdisciplinary sources, exposing students to major historical themes and significant Black figures. Through lectures, discussions, and thesis-driven writing assignments, students gain a substantive understanding of the African diaspora’s historical formation and develop critical reading and writing skills essential to successful careers. (Prerequisite: ENL 111)
Prof. Ibrahim Hirsi is finishing his Ph.D. in Immigration History at the University of Minnesota, after working as a journalist for the Sahan Journal, MinnPost, and Minnesota Public Radio. In addition to English, he speaks Somali, Arabic, and Swahili.

The Youth Studies minor is an interdisciplinary exploration of young peoples’ lived realities and opportunities to support them. The minor is designed to supplement a student’s current course of study particularly if that student is considering youth work in the future. Youth Studies students develop constructive and critical lenses for understanding society’s perceptions and treatment of young people. These lenses also shed light on young peoples’ processes of constructing meaning and culture. Students in this minor also gain practical skills through experiential learning opportunities. The underlying philosophy of the Youth Studies minor is one that supports young people’s voice and power. Young people are often targeted as a menace to society, but we see young people as gifted and powerful agents of positive change. Students in this minor will learn to take this approach to youth work into their chosen professions.
YST 320: Working with Children & Youth (4 credits, MWF) will be offered this spring with Professor Terrance Kwame-Ross. It will discuss interdisciplinary approaches to working with young people.

Moumita Dasgupta joined the Department of Physics as an Assistant Professor Fall 2019. Prior to this appointment, she was a Lecturer in the Department of Physics at Smith College and a teaching fellow at Amherst College. She specializes in soft matter and biophysics.
She is passionate about undergraduate teaching and adapts a combination of traditional pedagogical styles and more modern active learning, project-based learning, and design thinking methodologies. She cares about creating an inclusive learning environment in the classroom, where individuals with diversity of socio-economic background, outlook and culture feel equally welcome to participate and contribute.

During the June 9, 2020, town hall for faculty and staff, President Pribbenow announced seven new equity initiatives born out of response to the murder of George Floyd and Augsburg’s renewed commitment to accelerate and expand upon our university’s efforts to promote equity and inclusion during a national moment of racial and social justice reawakening. The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to middle and high school students. Participating in debate helps Twin Cities students gain crucial academic skills like argumentation, public speaking, and critical thinking.
We are seeking volunteers to serve as debate judges for our Saturday MSHSL debate tournament. The topic of the debate is the implications of AI and intellectual property rights.
No previous debate experience is required! We’ll train you. Volunteers listen to students debate, weigh the arguments, pick a winner, and provide constructive written and verbal feedback to help students improve.
The tournament will take place in Blegen Hall at the University of Minnesota West Bank (right across the street from Augsburg University.) The volunteer shift will last from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Judges will be provided a meal (Boca Chica) for participating. Plus, every hour you spend with us puts you in consideration for the MNUDL Volunteer of the Year Award!
Thanks to funding from the AmeriCorps Volunteer Generation Fund, we can provide Uber rides to individuals who need transportation to the tournament site. Let Johan at udlvolunteers@augsburg.edu know if you need assistance.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to 1,400+ Twin Cities middle and high school students. We’re currently hiring for the MNUDL Program Site Visit Specialist position.
The MNUDL Program Site Visit Specialist & Tournament Support (contract position) – will be paid $25/hr to provide site visit and tournament support to MNUDL schools, focusing on new programs created from a Minnesota Humanities Center Grant.
We’re specifically seeking a candidate with teaching and/or policy debate experience.
• You will support coaches (primarily new teachers) through site visits at practices.
• You will also assist in tournament operations.
• Maximum number of hours provided by the grant is 720, or approximately 30 hours per week – between mid-November through May. Practices and tournaments take place after school and in the evenings.

During the June 9, 2020, town hall for faculty and staff, President Pribbenow announced seven new equity initiatives born out of response to the murder of George Floyd and Augsburg’s renewed commitment to accelerate and expand upon our university’s efforts to promote equity and inclusion during a national moment of racial and social justice reawakening. One of these initiatives was the requirement of Augsburg faculty and staff to complete an annual anti-racism training.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to 1,400+ Twin Cities middle and high school students. We’re currently hiring for the MNUDL Program Site Visit Specialist position.
The MNUDL Program Site Visit Specialist & Tournament Support (contract position) – will be paid $25/hr to provide site visit and tournament support to MNUDL schools, focusing on new programs created from a Minnesota Humanities Center Grant.
We’re specifically seeking a candidate with teaching and/or policy debate experience.
• You will support coaches (primarily new teachers) through site visits at practices.
• You will also assist in tournament operations.
• Maximum number of hours provided by the grant is 720, or approximately 30 hours per week – between mid-November through May. Practices and tournaments take place after school and in the evenings.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to middle and high school students. Participating in debate helps Twin Cities students gain crucial academic skills like argumentation, public speaking, and critical thinking.
We are seeking volunteers to serve as debate judges for our Saturday MSHSL debate tournament. The topic of the debate is the implications of AI and intellectual property rights.
No previous debate experience is required! We’ll train you. Volunteers listen to students debate, weigh the arguments, pick a winner, and provide constructive written and verbal feedback to help students improve.
The tournament will take place in Blegen Hall at the University of Minnesota West Bank (right across the street from Augsburg University.) The volunteer shift will last from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Judges will be provided a meal (Boca Chica) for participating. Plus, every hour you spend with us puts you in consideration for the MNUDL Volunteer of the Year Award!
Thanks to funding from the AmeriCorps Volunteer Generation Fund, we can provide Uber rides to individuals who need transportation to the tournament site. Let Johan at udlvolunteers@augsburg.edu know if you need assistance.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, makes debate teams possible in Twin Cities schools for 1,400+ students! For the first time, MNUDL is now an Augsburg Experience program.
You can support our youth and gain valuable skills as part of the AUGEX5B Special Immersion: MN Urban Debate League course.
Benefits of participating:
• This counts toward your Augsburg Experience requirement, but it’s a 0-credit course, so you do NOT have to pay for participation.
• No specific major requirement!
• By participating, you can become qualified to judge multiple types of debate, which can lead to future paying gigs with the MNUDL!
The spring semester course will take place from 12:30-1:30 PM on Fridays. The location will be the Anderson Hall basement (near the Campus Cupboard and MNUDL office.)
You’ll complete 40 hours supporting the MNUDL (20 must be completed off-campus.)

I am both sad and excited to announce that Lauren Radomski is leaving her position as Assistive Technology/Accommodations Specialist in the CLASS office. Please join us in Lindell 216 for a farewell open house on Tuesday, November 19 at 3:00. p.m. Lauren has contributed so much to Augsburg by coordinating our accommodated testing, helping students find technology to assist them in their work, and consulting with faculty to make their course materials accessible. We share her excitement about her new opportunity but will truly miss Lauren and her caring and competent work with all of us.

The Phillips Scholars Program application for the 2025-26 cohort is open until February 28, 2025. Phillips Scholars create and test innovative ideas that address community problems — running their own summer programming. There’s support along the way, with the students coming together to develop their leadership skills and prepare for their projects. Scholars receive more than $9,000 in scholarships and stipends. Ten students from 15 eligible Minnesota private colleges and universities will be selected each.

Twelve talented Augsburg students participated in the annual Jerry Heuer MAA-NCS Team Competition on Saturday, November 16. Working in teams of three, they worked on solving 10 challenging math problems competing against 60+ other teams from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Canada.Results will be announced in the next couple of weeks. The participating students were: Ariana Beeby, Krystal Bollinger, Max Figura, Taylor Fritz, Seán Gaffaney, Yuva Gottimukala Suresh, Hannah Larson, Addison McCarl, Clay Porter, Ivie Taft, Leah Tift, and Arabella Velleux. Thanks to the math club Unbounded and Prof. Haines for their support of the event.

Hello! I found a cat following people around Augsburg University for many hours. I have since been keeping them safe and fed. They seem to be a healthy Tuxedo cat who is very friendly, leading me to believe that they might not be a stray cat. Their nose looks like a black heart, and they have a black spot on their left arm and on the back of their right leg. They also have beautiful long whiskers.
