This session will explore two separate yet interconnected resources that can help faculty support student writers: The Writing Center and Writing Across the Curriculum. The first part of the session, led by Jenn Forsthoefel, will discuss ways for faculty to encourage their students to take advantage of the Writing Center and expectations faculty should have for the students that use the Writing Center. The second part, led by Sarah Groeneveld Kenney, will review some principles of Writing Across the Curriculum scholarship that can help instructors across the disciplines design more effective writing assignments and equitably assess student writing.

Participants will have the opportunity to examine and respond to scenarios in small groups.

The community garden still needs a little help getting ready for the season – we have about 15 in-ground beds that need their soil loosened up and fed with good nutrients so that our gardeners can begin planting. Come help us dig for a few minutes or a few hours! You don’t need to know what you’re doing… just be willing to dig. Wear sturdy shoes and clothes you can get dirty. Bring work gloves if you have them. Thanks!
Fulbright: Live abroad after you graduate

The Fulbright Student Program fully funds students to study, research, or serve as an English teaching assistant abroad for a year (no classroom teaching experience required!). During their year abroad, Fulbrighters meet, work, live with and learn from the people of the host country, sharing daily experiences. The program facilitates cultural exchange through direct interaction on an individual basis in the classroom, field, home, and in routine tasks, allowing participants to gain an appreciation of others’ viewpoints and beliefs, the way they do things, and the way they think.
Past Augsburg students have been selected for Fulbright Awards to countries such as Czech Republic, South Korea, Ecuador, Poland, Kenya, Malaysia, Peru, Spain, Turkey, Taiwan, and Germany (and more!), and we currently have six alums abroad through the program! Augsburg’s focus on cross-cultural engagement and community involvement makes Auggies particularly strong candidates who are well-prepared to make the most of a Fulbright experience.

2 Fulbright Winners; 1 Alternate

Emilie Tomes (19), a presidential scholar who earns a B.A. in Psychology next week, has been named a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant to Indonesia. At Augsburg Emilie has been involved as a Coordinator and Teacher for Interfaith Bridge Building. This work led her to choose Indonesia with its religious plurality and rich traditions. In addition to teaching English, Emilie plans to “take Bahasa Indonesian lessons and create a speech program for students to engage with literature and/or important issues.” After Fulbright, Emilie plans to pursue a PhD in psychology with a concentration in peace studies and become a faculty member.
Emily Knudson (2015, Environmental Studies, English Literature and Spanish) has been awarded an English Teaching Assistantship to Brazil. Also a Presidential Scholar, Knudson served as the Supplemental Instructor for Augsburg’s first River Semester. After Augsburg she earned two master’s degrees from the University of Granada, one in English Language and Linguistics and one in Women and Gender Studies. Outside of classroom teaching while in Brazil, Emily hopes to “work on a project including urban agriculture so the seeds I plant can continue to grant healthy food for years to come.” After Fulbright, Emily would like to teach languages in an American public school.
Madeline Kinn (2018, Psychology and Studio Art) has been named an Alternate Fulbright English Teaching Assistant to the Czech Republic. A Regent’s Scholar Madeline was very involved in research while at Augsburg, even co-authoring a paper with Dr. Ben Denkinger. In addition to teaching English in the Czech Republic, Madeline planned on beginning an afterschool art class or soccer club and to volunteer time in elder care facilities, where she currently works creating and facilitating activities. Madeline plans to earn a PhD in Clinical Psychology with a focus on gerontology.

We thank her for all she’s done for Augsburg, and wish her well as she spends more time with her family, and on the golf course!

Effective grant writing skills are important for individuals working in many roles at nonprofit and government agencies – including education. This course will include an introduction to grants, budget development, and grants management, and establish an understanding of their role in supporting important community work. We will also address how to identify projects well-suited for grant support, as well as the process of prospect research, how to develop relationships with funders, and how to write a successful grant proposal. Students will build skills and practice creating letters of inquiry and competitive funding proposals.

The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, AugSTEM Scholars receive scholarships of $5,000, $7,500 and $10,000 per student per year (differences in award amounts correspond to levels of financial need). Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.
Eligibility:
-Enrolled full-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, chemistry, computer science, environmental studies, mathematics, or physics)
-Within 5 semesters of graduating as of Fall 2019
-Major GPA of 3.0 or higher

New Campus Box End of Year Procedure

Two weeks after the spring semester ends (May 17th) we will be closing all student campus boxes. Before fall semester starts we will be reassigning them to all students living on campus, and commuter students can then request to have a campus box if they have a need of one.
If you would like your mail forwarded or would like to keep your mailbox open for the summer please either fill out this survey (https://forms.gle/WSbvj13Rpnb95PzR7) or fill out the slip that will be arriving in your campus box very soon. (There is also an option to be reassigned your current box for the next semester)
We only forward 1st Class USPS mail. Packages (USPS, FedEx, UPS, Amazon), magazines, non-profit mail and standard mail will not be forwarded. We can only forward to US addresses.
We ask that you contact the people/business sending you mail and correcting it to your permanent address. Also enrolling in online/electronic billing is both environmentally friendly and will save you time (and sometimes money).
If you have a rented lock on your campus box please return it to Shipping/Receiving before May 17th. If it is a personal lock please remove it or they will be cut off after May 18th.

This interactive faculty development session is designed to provide relevant content, suggestions for best practices, and support. Empowering Underrepresented Students in STEM at Augsburg (E.U.S.S.A.) is summer enrichment program which will offer workshops on Tuesdays, 5:00-8:30 PM, June 4th-July 20th. Students who participate in the program will receive a stipend of up to $600. Food will also be provided at each session.
The aim of the program is to bring more diversity to STEM at Augsburg and to support underrepresented students academically, financially, and through professional networking.

The MN Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide several debate programs to Twin Cities students, including our East African Debate Initiative. This season, East African middle and high school students will debate rent control in the Twin Cities. We are searching for judges for the upcoming tournament:

Judges will receive a $55 check for judging 3 rounds of debate.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, will host the season’s final Spanish Debate League tournament on May 8th, 2019.
We are seeking Spanish-fluent judges for this final tournament.
Judges will receive a $55 check for judging 3 rounds of debate, held entirely in Spanish. Dinner is provided. This tournament is held at Highland Park Senior High School in St. Paul, MN.
Please join us in helping boost the vocabulary, public speaking skills, and confidence for local Spanish-speaking high school and middle school students!

If you’ve got a two-wheeled chariot, we encourage you to join us for an inaugural Coffee Clunker. We’ll be supporting local coffee establishments, while celebrating the end of the semester, and getting a few extra miles under our belt. Feel free to hop off the route whenever you need to leave.
This is an open ride for any cyclist at any ability level.

Avis Benson, IT, retiring May 3

Avis Benson, system support analyst in IT, is retiring on friday after 22 years of service. She has kept Augsburg’s financial and HR data accurate, secure, and available to those who rely on it. She was a key member of the Agresso implementation team in 2002 and helped keep us focused on the impact of such a system change on the people here. She has continued to grow and expand our use of Agresso in the years since. Avis is an avid and accomplished watercolorist and now will have more time for painting and traveling with her friends. Her instantly recognizable voice and laugh will be missed in the IT offices. We wish her a wonderful retirement and appreciate all she’s done for Augsburg.

World Drumming and Culture course, Fall 2019

NEW Augsburg course offering, Fall semester 2019: World Drumming and Culture, a 2-credit course will meet M/W from 9:20-10:30. Engage with performance traditions from various non-Western cultures, particularly those from sub-Saharan Africa and the Diaspora. Learn through hands-on experience playing drums, bells, and rattles, by singing songs, and through improvisation and listening drills. Study the cultural context associated with each musical style through reading assignments, examination of online videos, and class discussion. Enroll for course 392-B Topics – no prior musical experience necessary.

One student rode off on a new bike – the winner of a drawing sponsored by A’viands. Effective grant writing skills are important for individuals working in many roles at nonprofit and government agencies – including education. This course will include an introduction to grants, budget development, and grants management, and establish an understanding of their role in supporting important community work. We will also address how to identify projects well-suited for grant support, as well as the process of prospect research, how to develop relationships with funders, and how to write a successful grant proposal. Students will build skills and practice creating letters of inquiry and competitive funding proposals.

A’viands service locations and hours of operation

On a weekly basis, I will send out the locations that are serving and the hours of operation. While we will be open at Einstein throughout the summer, The Commons will be open sporadically due to camps and off-campus groups. Nabo will be closed for the summer after the 3rd for remodeling and Kafeega will be open every other weekend to accommodate the graduate program.
Next week, 5/6 – 5/10, Einstein Bros. will be open from 7:30 to 1:30. The entire menu will be available with the exception of gourmet bagels and the sandwiches that have lox.

Meeting about Culture and Social Justice minor

This announcement is for faculty interested in further development of the Culture and Social Justice minor. We’re going to meet in the next few weeks to discuss some additional work we need to do.
The minor was first offered a few years ago, an interdisciplinary approach to the study of marginalized groups worldwide. Those involved in the creation have already been contacted about meeting in the next few weeks, but there may be additional people interested in our discussions. Empowering Underrepresented Students in STEM – Augsburg summer program for rising sophomores

Empowering Underrepresented Students in STEM at Augsburg (E.U.S.S.A.). is a summer enrichment program that will offer workshops on Tuesdays, 5:00-8:30 PM, June 4th-July 20th. Students who participate in the program will receive a stipend of up to $600. Food will also be provided at each session.
The aim of the program is to bring more diversity to STEM at Augsburg and to support underrepresented students academically, financially, and through professional networking.
Eligibility:
Underrepresented students: Black/African American, Hispanic, Native American, Alaska Natives, Native Pacific Islanders
Current first year students (sophomores in fall 2019)

2 Fulbright Winners; 1 Alternate

Emilie Tomes (19), a presidential scholar who earns a B.A. in Psychology next week, has been named a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant to Indonesia. At Augsburg Emilie has been involved as a Coordinator and Teacher for Interfaith Bridge Building. This work led her to choose Indonesia with its religious plurality and rich traditions. In addition to teaching English, Emilie plans to “take Bahasa Indonesian lessons and create a speech program for students to engage with literature and/or important issues.” After Fulbright, Emilie plans to pursue a PhD in psychology with a concentration in peace studies and become a faculty member.
Emily Knudson (2015, Environmental Studies, English Literature and Spanish) has been awarded an English Teaching Assistantship to Brazil. Also a Presidential Scholar, Knudson served as the Supplemental Instructor for Augsburg’s first River Semester. After Augsburg she earned two master’s degrees from the University of Granada, one in English Language and Linguistics and one in Women and Gender Studies. Outside of classroom teaching while in Brazil, Emily hopes to “work on a project including urban agriculture so the seeds I plant can continue to grant healthy food for years to come.” After Fulbright, Emily would like to teach languages in an American public school.
Madeline Kinn (2018, Psychology and Studio Art) has been named an Alternate Fulbright English Teaching Assistant to the Czech Republic. A Regent’s Scholar Madeline was very involved in research while at Augsburg, even co-authoring a paper with Dr. Ben Denkinger. In addition to teaching English in the Czech Republic, Madeline planned on beginning an afterschool art class or soccer club and to volunteer time in elder care facilities, where she currently works creating and facilitating activities. Madeline plans to earn a PhD in Clinical Psychology with a focus on gerontology.

Winner of Airpods/Scholarship recipients say thanks to donors

Congratulations to Dralandra Larkins, a senior Social Work major from Minneapolis, who won Apple AirPods in a drawing for scholarship recipients. Along with the 143 other respondents, she filled out an online questionnaire and was entered into a prize drawing.
Each year more than 330 students, out of a student body of 3500, receive scholarship awards that were started by individual and corporate donors who care about students, learning, and value the unique attributes of an Augsburg education. Each year we ask these students to share their Augsburg experience with these donors as a way to demonstrate that their donations are making a difference.

The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, AugSTEM Scholars receive scholarships of $5,000, $7,500 and $10,000 per student per year (differences in award amounts correspond to levels of financial need). Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Fulbright: Live abroad after you graduate

The Fulbright Student Program fully funds students to study, research, or serve as an English teaching assistant abroad for a year (no classroom teaching experience required!). During their year abroad, Fulbrighters meet, work, live with and learn from the people of the host country, sharing daily experiences. The program facilitates cultural exchange through direct interaction on an individual basis in the classroom, field, home, and in routine tasks, allowing participants to gain an appreciation of others’ viewpoints and beliefs, the way they do things, and the way they think.
Past Augsburg students have been selected for Fulbright Awards to countries such as Czech Republic, South Korea, Ecuador, Poland, Kenya, Malaysia, Peru, Spain, Turkey, Taiwan, and Germany (and more!), and we currently have six alums abroad through the program! Augsburg’s focus on cross-cultural engagement and community involvement makes Auggies particularly strong candidates who are well-prepared to make the most of a Fulbright experience.

Farewell for Kirsten O’Brien – TODAY

After working in URGO for 6 and ½ years, Kirsten O’Brien will be leaving Augsburg to take a position as Grants Management Associate with the Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies. Students, faculty and staff who have worked with Kirsten in her role as URGO’s Undergraduate Research, Graduate School and National Fellowships Specialist are keenly aware of the considerable gifts Kirsten brought to every interaction and every task. Her attention to quality and supportive nature helped Augsburg students and alums reach their goals of attaining off-campus summer research, graduate school or national fellowship placements. Thanks to A’viands food service for the Late Night Breakfast, Monday, April 29. Over 400 enjoyed great food from A’viands, and great music from KAUG. One student rode off on a new bike – the winner of a drawing sponsored by A’viands. Two Auggies Named to NSF Fellows List

Senior biologist Holly Kundel was awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF GRFP), which provides a $34,000 stipend/three years for graduate study. Holly was among 2,000 students named NSF GRFP fellows out of 12,000 applicants. Last year Holly was named a Goldwater Scholar, a national award for top STEM undergraduate scientists. Holly has worked three summers and three academic years with Dr. Emily Schilling conducting dragonfly research, funded by donor Dean Sundquist and the M.A. Cargill Philanthropies. Holly is a co-author on three publications and presented research findings at numerous regional and national conferences. Holly will be pursuing a Master’s of Science in Fisheries and Aquatic biology at the University of MN and plans on earning a PhD in the same field.
Senior biologist Olivia Fitch was named to the Honorable Mention NSF GRFP list. Olivia has worked three summers and three academic years with Dr. Matt Beckman studying the genetic mechanism for cyclops eye development in Daphnia magna, commonly known as water fleas. Olivia also worked in both the Bee and Monarch Labs at the U of M. She presented her research multiple times, including on-campus and nationally and is working with Dr. Beckman on a manuscript for submission. Olivia will be attending Michigan State University pursuing a PhD in Integrative Biology.

Augsburg GRE Summer Prep Course

Augsburg University offers a four and a half week GRE prep course each summer for Augsburg students, alumni, and staff at a cost well below those found at private test centers (due to limited capacity, this course is not available for those outside of the Augsburg network). This course is taught by experienced GRE test-prep educators and walks students through each section of the general test. Throughout the course students will have a chance to take a full-length practice test, complete practice problems for each area of the test, and receive in-depth feedback and instruction. The registration fee also includes a six-month subscription to the online GRE study tool, Magoosh.

We are seeking Spanish-fluent judges for this final tournament.
Judges will receive a $55 check for judging 3 rounds of debate, held entirely in Spanish. Dinner is provided. This tournament is held at Highland Park Senior High School in St. Paul, MN.

Help us send off our graduating seniors at the U.S. Bank Stadium this year! Annually we rely on staff, current students and alumni to assist with rehearsal and the successful and smooth flow of the event.
There are many needs for assistance to help with checking in students, escorting students to field level, assisting with accessible seating, handing out programs and/or providing directional support at the stadium. Many of these opportunities would allow you the ability to stay and view the ceremony in its entirety.

Paideia Institue 2019

Join us for our 30th anniversary celebration of the Paideia Institute from July 22-26, 2019 at Augsburg University. This year’s question, “What’s the great idea?” will explore a multitude of great ideas from beauty to justice. During the Paideia Institute attendees participate in inquiry-based seminars on various texts. In coaching activities participants gain expertise in facilitating seminars. Paideia seminars are applicable in many professional settings and can be used with all ages and any subject area. Educators use seminars to introduce students to the vital skills necessary to have courteous conversations about challenging issues presented in texts.
This professional development course welcomes all Augsburg faculty, staff, and students, and can be taken for credits or continuing education units. Scholarships applications due May 1. On time registration is open until June 1.

Online Summer Course on Nicaragua

Register for HIS195-B this Summer 2019 to learn about the current Nicaraguan social-political crisis. Students will observe, learn and reflect on the historical contexts that have shaped and impacted Nicaraguan politics of the present days. Using historical methods of analysis and a broad range of sources representing multiple perspectives, the course will examine competing historical references and their respective usefulness in understanding change and continuity over time, specifically between the 1979 Revolution and the current social-political crisis of Nicaragua.

Empowering Underrepresented Students in STEM at Augsburg (E.U.S.S.A.). is a summer enrichment program that will offer workshops on Tuesdays, 5:00-8:30 PM, June 4th-July 20th. Students who participate in the program will receive a stipend of up to $600. Food will also be provided at each session.
The aim of the program is to bring more diversity to STEM at Augsburg and to support underrepresented students academically, financially, and through professional networking.
Eligibility:
Underrepresented students: Black/African American, Hispanic, Native American, Alaska Natives, Native Pacific Islanders
Current first year students (sophomores in fall 2019)
Non-transfers (enrolled fall 2018 at Augsburg)

Call for Proposals for Place-Based Justice Network Summer Institute 2019

The Sabo Center is excited to announce that this summer, Augsburg University will be hosting a national conference for the Place-Based Justice Network (PBJN), of which our institution is a member, along with 19 other higher education institutions from across the country. The Place-Based Justice Network is a learning community committed to transforming higher education and our communities by deconstructing systems of oppression through place-based community engagement with a racial justice lens.
At the Summer Institute on July 10-12, 2019, teams from universities and colleges from across the country will come together to learn, strengthen our practice, and network.
The PBJN has released a call for proposals for workshops and breakout sessions at the Summer Institute. They seek proposals for breakout sessions that center dialogue and interactivity on topics related to place-based community engagement initiatives and their planning, development, programs, evaluation and impact. Potential topics for breakout sessions include, but are not limited to:
*Scholar-activism and community-based research: examples and lessons learned
*Relationship-building and decentralized decision making
*Sustaining long-term commitments with neighborhoods and communities
*Critical scholarship on community engagement including racial justice, economic justice, education justice, disability justice, queer, and feminist theory and practices
*Lessons from community organizing
*Asset-based community development
*Power analysis and community voice
*Anti-racist storytelling strategies
*Preparing students to enter and transition out of place-based community engagement

After working in URGO for 6 and ½ years, Kirsten O’Brien will be leaving Augsburg to take a position as Grants Management Associate with the Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies. Students, faculty and staff who have worked with Kirsten in her role as URGO’s Undergraduate Research, Graduate School and National Fellowships Specialist are keenly aware of the considerable gifts Kirsten brought to every interaction and every task. Her attention to quality and supportive nature helped Augsburg students and alums reach their goals of attaining off-campus summer research, graduate school or national fellowship placements. Supports students pursuing a degree in STEM.

World Drumming course for All students, Fall 2019

NEW Augsburg course offering, Fall semester 2019: World Drumming and Culture, a 2-credit course will meet M/W from 9:20-10:30. Engage with performance traditions from various non-Western cultures, particularly those from sub-Saharan Africa and the Diaspora. Learn through hands-on experience playing drums, bells, and rattles, by singing songs, and through improvisation and listening drills. Study the cultural context associated with each musical style through reading assignments, examination of online videos, and class discussion. Five Augsburg faculty, students, alumni presented at the 2019 Minnesota Council of Teachers of Mathematics regional conference in Duluth this past weekend. The presentations and workshops were 60 and 90 minutes long, respectively.

Congratulations to Dralandra Larkins, a senior Social Work major from Minneapolis, who won Apple AirPods in a drawing for scholarship recipients. Along with the 143 other respondents, she filled out an online questionnaire and was entered into a prize drawing.
Each year more than 330 students, out of a student body of 3500, receive scholarship awards that were started by individual and corporate donors who care about students, learning, and value the unique attributes of an Augsburg education. Each year we ask these students to share their Augsburg experience with these donors as a way to demonstrate that their donations are making a difference.
Thank you to all 144 scholarship recipients who completed the questionnaire and a big thank you to all scholarship donors for paying it forward. Go Auggies!
