2023 Open Enrollment: November 7 – November 18, 2022
Open Enrollment is the only time of year when you may elect or change your benefits for the coming year, unless you experience a qualifying life event.
During open enrollment, no action means no coverage.
Employees who fail to act by November 18 will not have coverage effective January 1, 2023, and must wait until the next open enrollment period to elect coverage, unless a qualifying life event occurs.

Students – don’t forget about TutorMe! It is available to Augsburg students 24/7 and offers tutoring in over 300 subjects from qualified tutors. Students are able to use 3 hours a week; 3 one hour sessions or 6 thirty-minute sessions. You can access TutorMe through any of your Moodle classes. At the top left of your screen there is an orange tab to see the side panel of resources. As you scroll down, you will see the “Augsburg Tools” section and underneath is the link to TutorMe. Kathryn Swanson, English professor emerita, received notice that _Reading the Cozy Mystery_ has won the the 2021 International Crime Fiction Book Prize. Her chapter is “Extending Cozy Boundaries” and explores ways the traditional “cozy” has developed and changed in recent years.

URGO has a limited amount if travel funding to award this academic year. URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.
The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible after receiving acceptance to a conference. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly throughout the school year and will begin reviewing applications November 14th.

The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program where undergraduate students are funded ($6,000 for full-time researchers) to conduct research or creative activities under the guidance of a faculty mentor they choose.

The Boren Scholarship is an initiative by the US Federal Government to increase the study of languages by individuals committed to public service careers. The Boren Scholarship can be used to cover a variety of study abroad experiences where language learning is the focus. URGO and Study Abroad provide joint advising on this program and can assist any applicant in selecting a program, developing budgets and writing/editing application essays.
Scholarship amounts:
Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)
Up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks
Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

Breakthrough Minneapolis at Blake, formerly LearningWorks, is part of the national Breakthrough Collaborative that comprises 24 sites across the U.S. and one in Hong Kong. Its overall mission is to launch high potential middle school students on the path to college, while also inspiring talented high school and college students to pursue careers in education.
At Breakthrough Minneapolis at Blake, we achieve this mission by using a “students-teaching-students” model. During our 9 weeks of summer programming, about 18 talented college students work as teachers, advisors, and mentors for 75-80 middle school students from Minneapolis Public Schools, all under the guidance of veteran professional teachers. Breakthrough teachers are creative, diverse, intelligent, and motivated. They represent many academic and personal backgrounds, but share a commitment to students and closing the opportunity gap.

• We are looking for someone with policy debate and urban education experience.
• We hope we can recruit someone with full fluency in Spanish, or connection with the East African community, or knowledge of Financial Literacy (our three community leadership debate programs).

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.
If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.
Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

Leaves are falling, birds are flying south, and it’s dark by 5:15 p.m. But the surest sign of winter arrives this week: Augsburg’s dome is going up.
Last week, athletic facilities staff undertook the multi-day process to convert Edor Nelson Field for winter use, taking down field pads, wind screens, goal posts, and the front section of the bleachers to be stored off-site until spring.
On Monday, the dome arrived in five pieces on flatbed trucks. Working with Augsburg facilities maintenance staff, installation crews from the manufacturer Yeadon will roll out each section on the field, secure the connections between them, and attach the dome doors (weather permitting).
After three days of prep and assembly, inflation only takes about three hours. Working around snow delays, the dome should be inflated later this week and open for use by Augsburg athletic teams, local leagues, and community members the week of November 21.

We’re excited to announce a new on campus meeting for anyone in recovery (of any form), curious about recovery, or have loved ones who struggle with any form of addiction. It is hosted by StepUp students, but is in no way limited to only StepUp students or people with specifically substance abuse issues. This isn’t tied to AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) or NA (Narcotics Anonymous), it’s our own format and is completely fluid. We’re open to suggestions of any ways to better the meeting. Our focus is on providing a place to constructively process issues and work on spiritual development, whatever that may look like. The Boren Scholarship is an initiative by the US Federal Government to increase the study of languages by individuals committed to public service careers. The Boren Scholarship can be used to cover a variety of study abroad experiences where language learning is the focus. URGO and Study Abroad provide joint advising on this program and can assist any applicant in selecting a program, developing budgets and writing/editing application essays.
Scholarship amounts:
Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)
Up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks
Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

URGO has a limited amount if travel funding to award this academic year. URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.
The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible after receiving acceptance to a conference. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly throughout the school year and will begin reviewing applications November 14th.

Augsburg Campus Kitchen’s Give to the Max campaign is thrilled to have already raised 47% of our goal!
Today I’d like to tell you about our work with CR youth. CR residents consistently identify wellness, food, and social connectedness as areas of opportunity, as many residents suffer from a range of health issues, including hunger, obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Recent research by Fairview Health Services shows 92% of CR youth qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Our youth programming is in collaboration with the Brian Coyle Community Center, located a few blocks from our campus, which is the city’s busiest multi-service center, hosting 750+ daily visitors and annually serving 7,500+ individuals via a continuum of programs and partnerships that are implemented by a diverse multilingual staff. Since 2003, Campus Kitchen and Brian Coyle have partnered to offer after-school and summertime meals, cooking courses, and gardening programs. With your support, Coyle Youth Kitchen can continue working to address hunger by providing cooking, nutrition, and food systems education, strengthening youth leadership and advocacy skills, and expanding partnerships with local food organizations.
A $60 donation covers supplies needed for one cooking class for neighborhood youth. Your donation will make a significant difference in our ability to meet the growing and diverse food needs of Augsburg’s student body and our neighbors in Cedar Riverside. Eight Augsburg students majoring in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Physics competed in the 24th annual North Central Section Mathematical Association of America Heuer Memorial Team Contest. Shadin Elkhair, Max Figura, Sean Gaffaney, Jimmy Hemera, Diana Ortiz, Alinase Phiri, Devonna Singer, and Bjorn Solberg formed three teams that wrestled with ten challenging mathematical problems from a wide range of mathematical fields using only whiteboards, markers, paper and pencil, and three hours on a Saturday morning! The Director of Residence Life provides the vision, management, and direction for the department of residence life at Augsburg University. Provides leadership to develop and implement programs and operations that enhance the student experience for 1,000 students living on campus. Provides leadership and has accountability for meeting occupancy goals and linking residence life with student retention. Works collaboratively with other departments across campus to improve the student experience and occupancy in the residence halls through programming, safety initiatives, facilities maintenance, and recruitment of incoming and returning students. Active participant in the Division of Student Experience and Success and in other campus leadership groups and committees. Primary Responsibilities Oversees programming and daily operations that provide an engaged, student success focused experience for all students, both residential and commuter. Responsible for meeting University goals related to residence hall occupancy and auxiliary revenue, including partnering with the Admissions Office to bring incoming students to residence life. Establishes accurate occupancy, revenue reports and budget analysis. Aligns Residence Life operations and programming to enhance student retention and success, as well as partners with other offices to ensure the institution meets retention goals. Oversees the management of all room assignment-related tasks for new and returning students, mid-year room change requests, and communications to internal and external stakeholders regarding room assignments on campus. Engages in short- and long-range planning around effective and efficient residence life operations. Supervises residence life staff. Oversees residence life engagement with students around concerns and challenges, including working closely with other campus partners to make referrals as needed. Consults with the department of public safety, department of facilities, and dining services to address safety, facility, and meal plan issues. Manages communication with students and parents regarding concerns around the residential student experience. Oversees, evaluates, and assesses the residential facilities with the department of facilities, including communicating regularly with the Director of Facilities and the Custodial Supervisor to monitor residence hall maintenance, housing facilities issues and improvements, and housekeeping needs. Manages assessment efforts around residential student learning and student satisfaction with the residential student experience. Oversees, edits, and publishes the Residence Life Handbook All other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor

Teaching faculty and staff are consistently called to support and care for their students, sometimes in complex and challenging situations. In order to fulfill this role, teaching faculty and staff must also have tools, environments, and strategies that promote care and balance for themselves. This session, hosted by CTL, the Health and Well-Being Task Force and CWC, will focus on helping teaching faculty and staff consider strategies and perspectives that can improve their own sense of professional and personal well-being.

The Boren Scholarship is an initiative by the US Federal Government to increase the study of languages by individuals committed to public service careers. The Boren Scholarship can be used to cover a variety of study abroad experiences where language learning is the focus. URGO and Study Abroad provide joint advising on this program and can assist any applicant in selecting a program, developing budgets and writing/editing application essays.
Scholarship amounts:
Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)
Up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks
Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program where undergraduate students are funded ($6,000 for full-time researchers) to conduct research or creative activities under the guidance of a faculty mentor they choose.

URGO has a limited amount if travel funding to award this academic year. URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.
The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible after receiving acceptance to a conference. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly throughout the school year and will begin reviewing applications November 14th.

Students are able to use 3 hours a week; 3 one hour sessions or 6 thirty-minute sessions. You can access TutorMe through any of your Moodle classes. This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.
If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.
Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.
