Volunteer as a Middle School Debate Judge!
The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University provides academic competitive debate to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities. We’re seeking volunteers for the spring season!
Middle school debate judging shifts are now open! No experience? No problem. We will train you. You just need to be able to pass a background check. Debate judges listen to students, provide feedback for them, and choose the winner. In the process, you’ll help students improve their public speaking, argumentation, and academic skills.
Please note that the timing for each shift is 3:30-7:00 PM CST and they are scheduled to be held in person in the Twin Cities Metro (location TBD).

URGO now has funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. Students are paid $1,400 for 80 hours of research. Research must be completed by May 23.
Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals immediately. The URGO Advisory Committee will review proposals on a rolling basis.

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program.
The 2023 trip will take place on Tuesday, March 28, 2023. Applications due February 7, 2023 and can be found at https://jewishminneapolis.org/minne/. If you would like to learn more about the program or would like advising on the application, please contact the URGO office at urgo@augsburg.edu.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM: All disciplines welcome
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 15th – July 28th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.
URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.
Phase 1 of the applications are due February 9th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research or creative activity is going on in your department!

The Sabo Scholars are juniors and seniors who have an interest in and a commitment to engagement in the political process, public policy, and/or careers in public service. This application is open to students who will be juniors or seniors in the 2023-2024 academic year.
The scholarship for 2023/2024 is $3,500 and is renewable for one year. Applications are due by March 5.

I have two chemistry lab notebooks for sale; both in very good condition. I used them for my labs but have taken those pages out—there is still plenty of paper left (likely enough to get you through Gen Chem 1 and 2 or O Chem 1 and 2). They have the special carbon paper which is useful for using one copy to turn in and saving another copy to study/learn from. $5 for both. Email me for more info.

While in New Orleans, we will be partnering with Rebuilding New Orleans Together, an organization whose goal is to improve the quality of life of low-income homeowners, particularly those who are elderly, disabled, veterans, or single head of households with minor children. We will be repairing homes and will have time to explore the city!

The Faculty Development Program at Augsburg is launching a new Faculty Mentoring program for new (and new-ish) faculty members, and we’re looking for tenured faculty who are knowledgeable about how Augsburg “works” to provide mentoring! We’re looking for at least 11 mentors to “match” with our mentees – mostly first and second year assistant professors.
The basic requirements to be considered as a mentor are (1) you must be a current, tenured member of the Augsburg Faculty and (2) have a general understanding of how the University “works” beyond your department. If you are interested, please complete this short “Application of Interest” posted below no later than Monday, January 23rd (the form also contains more information). All selected members are required to attend Mentor Orientation on the afternoon of Thursday, January 26th.

The NASA Space Grant scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially Space Physics & Engineering, Mathematics, and Science/Mathematics Education.
This competitive program awards up to 6 scholarships for Spring 2023 (totaling $8000), in the following areas:
Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
Strong candidates for the grant will be students who…

Interfaith Scholars will be taught by Interfaith Institute’s Executive Directors Najeeba Syeed, and offers students a unique opportunity to explore how their worldview/faith(s) shapes them as leaders, as well as build their leadership skills to engage across difference.

Emilie Lenz, currently Sr. Financial Aid counselor at Augsburg University, will join CGEE as the Off-campus study program associate. Emilie has served at the financial aid department liaison to CGEE since she began her work at Augsburg. Starting on January 23 her work in CGEE will focus on advising Augsburg students who are planning semester or affiliate summer programs.
Emilie graduated from Luther College in Decorah Iowa with her bachelor’s degree in Spanish and International Studies, while studying at Luther she studied abroad for a semester in Madrid, Spain. After Luther while deciding what to do with her life, she went back to Spain and taught English to middle schoolers for a few years before coming back to the United States to pursue her master’s degree at Concordia University Saint Paul in Leadership and Management. While obtaining her master’s degree, she worked in the student engagement office with a primary focus on study abroad and advised many students on both short and long-term programs! Emilie believes in helping students discover their best and truest selves while learning about the world in the best way possible, studying abroad and away!
We are so excited to have Emilie join the CGEE team.

Join Augsburg’s CGEE partner organization, the Playwrights’ Center, for a free reading of Ray Yamanouchi’s play “Tha Chink-Mart”.
A small, suburban town in Long Island, New York. Five Asian American teenage friends battle through a high school telling them they’re too Asian and a home life telling them they’re too American. Finding solace only amongst each other, they attempt to define for themselves what it means to be Asian in America… for better or for worse.

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.
If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.
Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

While in New Orleans, we will be partnering with Rebuilding New Orleans Together, an organization whose goal is to improve the quality of life of low-income homeowners, particularly those who are elderly, disabled, veterans, or single head of households with minor children. Volunteer as a Middle School Debate Judge!
The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University provides academic competitive debate to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities. We’re seeking volunteers for the spring season!
Middle school debate judging shifts are now open! No experience? No problem. We will train you. You just need to be able to pass a background check. Debate judges listen to students, provide feedback for them, and choose the winner. In the process, you’ll help students improve their public speaking, argumentation, and academic skills.
Please note that the timing for each shift is 3:30-7:00 PM CST and they are scheduled to be held in person in the Twin Cities Metro (location TBD).

Emilie Lenz, currently Sr. Financial Aid counselor at Augsburg University, will join CGEE as the Off-campus study program associate. Emilie has served at the financial aid department liaison to CGEE since she began her work at Augsburg. Starting on January 23 her work in CGEE will focus on advising Augsburg students who are planning semester or affiliate summer programs.
Emilie graduated from Luther College in Decorah Iowa with her bachelor’s degree in Spanish and International Studies, while studying at Luther she studied abroad for a semester in Madrid, Spain. After Luther while deciding what to do with her life, she went back to Spain and taught English to middle schoolers for a few years before coming back to the United States to pursue her master’s degree at Concordia University Saint Paul in Leadership and Management. While obtaining her master’s degree, she worked in the student engagement office with a primary focus on study abroad and advised many students on both short and long-term programs! Emilie believes in helping students discover their best and truest selves while learning about the world in the best way possible, studying abroad and away!
We are so excited to have Emilie join the CGEE team.

I used them for my labs but have taken those pages out—there is still plenty of paper left (likely enough to get you through Gen Chem 1 and 2 or O Chem 1 and 2). URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM: All disciplines welcome
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 15th – July 28th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.
URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.
Phase 1 of the applications are due February 9th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research or creative activity is going on in your department!

URGO now has funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. Students are paid $1,400 for 80 hours of research. Research must be completed by May 23.
Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals immediately. The URGO Advisory Committee will review proposals on a rolling basis.

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program.

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.
If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.
Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

On behalf of Pan-Afrikan Student Services and Augsburg University, we are excited to bring you this year’s Martin Luther King, JR., Convocation. This year’s theme is “We Rise, MLK and Our Voices Coming Alive”. As a community we came together and decided that we wanted this year’s theme to focus on our efforts to rebuild the community after a pandemic and absence of visibility and support systems for Pan-Afrikan students. This was mostly seen through not having a full office at Multicultural Life for an entire academic year. This event will center our Pan-Afrikan community through the art of dance, song, poetry, and more. All are welcome!
Our keynote speaker of this year is Dr. Terrance Kwame-Ross, Associate Professor in the Education Department at Augsburg University. Through his scholarship, service, and teaching practice, Dr. Kwame-Ross focuses on how individuals and human groups grow, develop, and change over time. He brings an interrogative, interdisciplinary, integrative, and intersectional pedagogical approach to teaching and learning across school, society, family, and church for whole-beingness. This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.
If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.
Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

Taking pre-emptive and intentional steps to create a classroom environment that promotes wellness and connection has benefits for students and for faculty. The Details: Meet outside the Campus Cupboard (Anderson 26). You will ride in the Campus Kitchen van (or in your personal vehicle) to the Sanneh Foundation Warehouse in St. Paul, where you will work in a team to prepare produce boxes/bags that will be distributed to neighbors in Cedar-Riverside the next day. Phillips Scholars create and test innovative ideas that address community problems — running their own summer programming. There’s support along the way, with the students coming together to develop their leadership skills and prepare for their projects. Scholars receive more than $9,000 in scholarships and stipends. Ten students from 15 eligible Minnesota private colleges and universities will be selected each year.
Applications are due February 24, 2023.
You’re eligible if you:
– Are enrolled full-time in the undergraduate program
– Demonstrate financial need
– Are a first-year, sophomore or junior in the spring of 2023
– Aspire to address a significant need within a particular community
– Demonstrate interest in civic engagement
– Can participate in all required program trainings and events
– Can complete a community service project in Minnesota during the summer of 2024
