Student Share Shop Opening this Fall–Looking for donations

Hey all,

Augsburg’s Environmental Stewardship Committee and Campus Cupboard are proud to announce a new student resource on campus: the student Share Shop. We are working towards opening this space in the sublevel of the old science building by Fall, 2019. To help us get started we are asking you—students, staff, and faculty at Augsburg—for some helpful donations.
Based off of a recent survey, here are some of the things we are looking for for the share shop:

– Household / dorm Repair (Spackle, Tool kits, poster putty)
– Recreational gear (sports equipment, out door games, hammocks, etc.)
– Office materials (calculators, sharpeners, staplers)
– First aid kits
– Twin XL sheets (new or washed)
– Weather related items (umbrellas, shovels, extra hats/scarves/mittens)
– Sewing/glasses repair kits
– Hot pots or rice cookers
– Cooking (Microwave, pots and pans, utensils, coffee makers)
– Board games, DVDs

Any donations are greatly appreciated and welcome, but please don’t feel obligated to donate. Donations can be brought to the Sabo Center located in the basement of Anderson Hall and placed in the designated bins. We appreciate your time and consideration thank you in advance.

We will be implementing new rules this semester to insure that everyone has an opportunity to get produce. On Wednesday, September 18 at 3:20 pm, you can listen to the talk, “Trauma: 3 Interdisciplinary Perspectives”. For 15 minutes, Professors Beckman (Biology), Lehmann (Social Work), and Lowe (Religion) will describe how trauma is currently understood in their disciplines and highlight the points of tension and coherence among these disciplinary approaches to trauma.

The EDTalk will take place in Hagfors 151, right next door to the Faculty Meeting. Enjoy your coffee and the talk before heading off to the meeting.

URGO Welcomes Augsburg Alum to Staff

URGO is happy to welcome Solveig Mebust, a 2009 Augsburg graduate in Music Education and Vocal and Instrumental, to our staff as Undergraduate Research, Graduate School and Fellowships Specialist. Amy Cosimini, who worked in our office over the summer, accepted a tenure track position at St. Olaf.

While at Augsburg, Solveig completed an URGO summer research project evaluating the music historical canon through analysis of pieces included in music history textbooks under the mentorship of Dr. Merilee Klemp. She also was URGO’s first student worker.

Currently, Solveig is writing her dissertation on women’s music activism in Norway, 1870-1920 on route to her PhD in Historical Musicology from the University of MN. During 2016-2017, Solveig spent the year in Norway on a Fulbright Research Award.

We are pleased to welcome her back to Augsburg and look forward to the many contributions she will make to URGO and Augsburg students.

Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 3 undergraduate science students, 1 undergraduate business/economics student, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the project or innovation and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,000. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

New Directors in Marketing and Communication

This summer, two staff members moved into director-level roles in the Marketing and Communication Division. Sarah Cash-Darvell became the director of university events following Jodi Collen’s departure in June, and Laura Swanson Lindahl was promoted from assistant director to director of marketing, leading the team responsible for publications, web properties, and advertising. Laura and Sarah both report to me and bring many years of experience at Augsburg and strong relationships across the university to these new roles. They join Gita Sitaramiah, director of public relations and internal communication, and me to make up the leadership team of the Marketing and Communication Division. If you’re unsure whom to contact about a particular question or need, feel free to reach out to any one of us—we’ll happily steer you in the right direction. Auggie Cyclists – Join the September Coffee Clunker

We are hoping you can join us on your bicycle for our monthly Coffee Clunker on Tuesday, September 17 starting at 4:30 p.m. Let’s burn off some beginning of the semester stress, chat over coffee and pastries, and build community!

– This is open to cyclists of all levels and abilities.
– We’ll meet on the grassy lawn area in front of Foss, and head on out shortly after 4:30.
– Feel free to leave the ride/coffee shop at any time to suit your schedule.

We’ll be taking [primarily] the trail to Coffee Bene on Cleveland Avenue in St. Paul (about 4 miles). The route can be seen in the calendar event (add it to your calendar below).

Pedestrian Bridge Closed Until Winter

A dump truck traveling on Interstate 94 last month struck the pedestrian bridge that goes over I-94 near Augsburg. State officials hope to reopen the pedestrian bridge by early winter. As alternatives, pedestrians can take 20th and 25th avenues south and bicyclists are urged to take the Riverside Avenue Bridge. The truck also hit the 25th Avenue and Riverside Avenue bridges and the west side sidewalk on 25th will remain closed until that bridge is repaired, which is expected to be done by late fall. State officials should be implementing some traffic control changes soon that will allow pedestrians on the west side of the bridge.

Course Description:
Many U.S. citizens know little of Guatemala and the struggles its people face although it is a nation that continuously finds its fortunes bound to the interests and intent of the United States.

This course invites you to hear Guatemalan people’s views of their country, to explore past and present US involvement, and learn from those who lived through and survived the civil war spanning four decades (1960-1996), as well as a new generation of writers and artists–all who creatively and peacefully counteract the culture of fear through art and literature.
This 4-credit course is part of the spring 2020 enrollment. It can be taken as part of, or in addition to, your usual course load, and overload fees incurred by this study abroad program will be waived.

***APPLICATIONS DUE NOVEMBER 1***

Program cost $3,825
includes: international airfare, all meals, all lodging, all program activities, all transportation in the UK. There is no additional tuition fee for full-time undergrad students.

New Class: Interested in the environment and food systems?

A new course has been added for this fall in the Environmental Studies Program and it’s all about food and its impact on the environment!! Register for ENV 100-A (Fall 2019).

The course satisfies the core curriculum requirement of Liberal Arts Foundation: Social & Behavioral Sciences and is 4 credits. We meet Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3:40-5:20pm.

General Description: Environmental Connections is an interdisciplinary introduction to current issues regarding the natural environment upon which we all depend, an environment under increasing strain. It also serves as the introductory course for Augsburg’s Environmental Studies Program and as a Social and Behavioral Sciences course in the Liberal Arts Foundation. Throughout the semester we will explore food systems and our collective challenge of balancing a sustainable society with sustainable ecologies. We all need food to survive, but current processes of cultivation, production, distribution, and waste disposal significantly, and detrimentally, impact the natural world. How serious are these challenges? How will we respond? What can be and is being done now to minimize the further damage from these human activities?

Augsburg’s Sesquicentennial Gala will be held on Friday, September 27 at the Minneapolis Depot. This event includes 1,000 alumni, past and present faculty, and community members who care a lot about the mission of Augsburg. There will be a reception, dinner, and a dance! Important Announcement About Choral Placement Auditions

The Augsburg choral faculty will be hearing placement auditions for Cedar Singers, Riverside Singers, and the Augsburg Choir during the afternoons of September 4th, 5th, and 6th. All University students are eligible – and heartily welcomed – to audition. If you were in Augsburg Choir last year, you are accepted to continue in AC this year, and there is no need to take these auditions. Likewise, Riverside Singers intending to continue in that group are also exempt. But we want to hear you if you are:

 a First-Year student.
 a Transfer student.
 a previous member of Cedar Singers.
 a previous member of Riverside Singers seeking consideration for Augsburg Choir.
 a returning Augsburg student who has not previously been involved in our choirs.

Please take careful note of these audition procedures:

1. Sign up for your audition appointment in Anderson Music Hall. Between the band and choir rooms, M2 and M3, you will find a bulletin board where the sign-up sheets will be posted. Auditions will be heard as follows: 9/4, 3:00-6:00; 9/5, 3:00-6:00; 9/6, 2:00-6:00.

2. Arrive outside the choir room (M3) at least 15 minutes prior to your appointment to access and complete the intake sheet and music-literacy assessment. (Never fear: we will use this assessment to inform our work with you, not to exclude you from participation.)

3. There is no need to prepare any song performance for this audition.

4. Results will be posted by Saturday at 5:00 pm on the same bulletin board where you found the sign-up sheets.

Nota bene: If you are a first year or new transfer student music major, you will be required to choose a Thursday audition appointment.

New Inside Augsburg Calendar Has Launched

On Monday, August 26, Augsburg launched a brand-new unified calendar (inside.augsburg.edu/calendar). This new calendar allows the University to integrate a number of already-existing institutional Google Calendars and display them on the same platform. Students, staff, and faculty will also be able to submit events manually to the calendar. This calendar will replace the previous calendar on the Inside Augsburg homepage.

This new calendar is the result of advocacy from Day Student Government to streamline events and announcements at the University. During fall semester 2018, a number of meetings were held with key event planners and calendar managers around campus to identity challenges to the current calendar system and how to move forward. Based on those discussions, a team was created in the spring to move forward with the creation of a unified calendar system. This team consisted of:

The Augsburg Native American Film Series presents Warrior Women: Mothers and Daughters Fighting for Indigenous Rights in the American Indian Movement on Saturday October 5, 2019. Warrior Women looks at the history of Indigenous activism as lived and led by AIM activist Madonna Thunder Hawk and her daughter Marcy. The film traces Madonna’s work for cultural sovereignty in education as she helped create the “We Will Remember” Survival School and the shared work she and her daughter have continued around environmental justice and Indigenous sovereignty. Course option: WST 220 – fulfills Humanities and Augsburg Experience

This program is limited to 15 students, accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. A waitlist will be used as needed.

This 4-credit course is part of the spring 2020 enrollment. It can be taken as part of, or in addition to, your usual course load, and overload fees incurred by this study abroad program will be waived.

Program cost $4,675
includes: international airfare, all meals, all lodging, all program activities, all transportation in the UK. There is no additional tuition fee for full-time undergrad students.

Today, most of the world’s population lives in metropolitan areas, whether that means a traditional city, a suburb, an exurb or a slum – this is a very recent change in human history. Humans are fundamentally social beings, and urban areas provide the space where most people are born, grow up and interact with one another throughout their entire lifetimes.. We will explore the city as a social and political phenomenon and examine how the design of cities affects social interactions in perhaps surprising ways – the placement of buildings and the design of open space may make us want to be in an area or flee it.

EDTalks are Back with “Trauma: 3 Interdisciplinary Perspectives”

Hear Professors Beckman (Biology), Lehmann (Social Work), and Lowe (Religion) describe how trauma is currently understood in their disciplines and highlight the points of tension and coherence among these disciplinary approaches to trauma.

The Auggie Pass is an all-you-can-ride pass for Augsburg day students. Supported by the green fee, Metro Transit and Augsburg, the Auggie Pass is good on any bus, any time, and any light rail, any time, as well as the NorthStar line to Anoka.

Students can get their Auggie Pass at the Library Circulation Desk – please bring Augsburg ID.

The passes are good August 1, 2019 through May 30, 2020.

Student Share Shop Opening this Fall–Looking for donations

Hey all,

Augsburg’s Environmental Stewardship Committee and Campus Cupboard are proud to announce a new student resource on campus: the student Share Shop. We are working towards opening this space in the sublevel of the old science building by Fall, 2019. To help us get started we are asking you—students, staff, and faculty at Augsburg—for some helpful donations.
Based off of a recent survey, here are some of the things we are looking for for the share shop:

– Household / dorm Repair (Spackle, Tool kits, poster putty)
– Recreational gear (sports equipment, out door games, hammocks, etc.)
– Office materials (calculators, sharpeners, staplers)
– First aid kits
– Twin XL sheets (new or washed)
– Weather related items (umbrellas, shovels, extra hats/scarves/mittens)
– Sewing/glasses repair kits
– Hot pots or rice cookers
– Cooking (Microwave, pots and pans, utensils, coffee makers)
– Board games, DVDs

Any donations are greatly appreciated and welcome, but please don’t feel obligated to donate. Donations can be brought to the Sabo Center located in the basement of Anderson Hall and placed in the designated bins. We appreciate your time and consideration thank you in advance.

Produce Distribution Resumes Mon Sept. 9

Happy to say that Campus Kitchen will resume produce distribution next Monday September 9th from 2:00pm-4:00pm in Christiansen lobby. We will be implementing new rules this semester to insure that everyone has an opportunity to get produce. The first hour (2-3) will be reserved for students and the following hour will be open for everyone. Please bring your own bag if you are able. Thank you for your continued support.

We have 1 spot left for an Appetizer/Side, 2 Spots left for Beverages and 2 spots left for activities. We do not allow groups to sell the same items so please have a few ideas ready if you are interested in applying.

There is also some seed money remaining to help offset the costs of purchasing the items needed and your group keeps everything they earn at the event.

Mayo Innovation Scholars Program

The Mayo Innovation Scholars Program is highly selective and brings together teams of science and economics undergraduate students and master’s-level business students to analyze a product in development at Mayo. Undergraduates are chosen from 12 of Minnesota’s private college and universities, comprising teams of four students. Each student team is lead by an MBA student and is advised by a project manager in the Mayo Office of Intellectual Property. Teams then present their findings to college faculty, inventors, and Mayo Clinic representatives. Participants gain valuable experience as consultants understanding how product development intersects science, business, and bioethics. Upon successful completion of the program, participants are awarded $1,000 stipends for their work. Eligible students are undergraduates studying science, business, or economics. Do you love to perform? If so, Augsburg has many opportunities for you to get involved, and you don’t have to be a Music Major to participate. We’d love to include you! For starters, check out the following:

• The Sesquicentennial Musical: A new piece of community devised Music-Theater is currently under construction, with funding provided by an institutional grant, to celebrate 150 years of Augsburg. Look for Songwriting workshops and readings this fall. Auditions for singer-actors will be held in Tjornholm-Nelson Theater on November 4-8. Rehearsals will take place in February and March (’20), and performances are scheduled for April 1-5, 2020.

• Opera Workshop: Students with an interest in singing, acting, movement and storytelling are welcome to join the OPERA WORKSHOP! Meets T/Th 1:50-3:30 in Sateren Auditorium. Expand your Performing Power and collaborate with other creative performers!

• Daily Chapel: Musicians of all styles, faiths and backgrounds are welcome to perform in daily chapel. Soloists and groups are regularly featured. Chapel meets MWF 10:40-11am, and TTh 11:30-11:50am. Come and share your gifts with the Augsburg community!

URGO Welcomes Augsburg Alum to Staff

URGO is happy to welcome Solveig Mebust, a 2009 Augsburg graduate in Music Education and Vocal and Instrumental, to our staff as Undergraduate Research, Graduate School and Fellowships Specialist. Amy Cosimini, who worked in our office over the summer, accepted a tenure track position at St. Olaf.

While at Augsburg, Solveig completed an URGO summer research project evaluating the music historical canon through analysis of pieces included in music history textbooks under the mentorship of Dr. Merilee Klemp. She also was URGO’s first student worker.

Currently, Solveig is writing her dissertation on women’s music activism in Norway, 1870-1920 on route to her PhD in Historical Musicology from the University of MN. During 2016-2017, Solveig spent the year in Norway on a Fulbright Research Award.

We are pleased to welcome her back to Augsburg and look forward to the many contributions she will make to URGO and Augsburg students.

Course Description:
Art of Resistance will immerse you in contemporary Palestinian culture and invite you to learn directly from a wide range of artists in the region. You will have the unique opportunity to experience art and performance first-hand in diverse Palestinian contexts, from a day-long excursion to cultural sites in Ramallah to a conference call with artists in Gaza. A major component of the course will be ongoing cultural exchange with students from Dar al-Kalima University in Bethlehem. Augsburg students will also learn about the complex political, historical, social, and religious context for Palestinian art and theater through guided tours, performances, gallery talks, museum visits, readings, and discussions. Throughout these experiences, students will interrogate what it means to create art under occupation, explore various definitions of the “art of resistance,” and learn tools to make creative work that defies and reimagines the status quo.

Course Description:
Many U.S. citizens know little of Guatemala and the struggles its people face although it is a nation that continuously finds its fortunes bound to the interests and intent of the United States.

This course invites you to hear Guatemalan people’s views of their country, to explore past and present US involvement, and learn from those who lived through and survived the civil war spanning four decades (1960-1996), as well as a new generation of writers and artists–all who creatively and peacefully counteract the culture of fear through art and literature.

This 4-credit course is part of the spring 2020 enrollment. It can be taken as part of, or in addition to, your usual course load, and overload fees incurred by this study abroad program will be waived.

New Inside Augsburg Calendar Has Launched

On Monday, August 26, Augsburg launched a brand-new unified calendar (inside.augsburg.edu/calendar). This new calendar allows the University to integrate a number of already-existing institutional Google Calendars and display them on the same platform. Students, staff, and faculty will also be able to submit events manually to the calendar. This calendar will replace the previous calendar on the Inside Augsburg homepage.

This new calendar is the result of advocacy from Day Student Government to streamline events and announcements at the University. During fall semester 2018, a number of meetings were held with key event planners and calendar managers around campus to identity challenges to the current calendar system and how to move forward. Based on those discussions, a team was created in the spring to move forward with the creation of a unified calendar system. This team consisted of:

New hands-on drumming course

NEW Augsburg course offering, Fall semester 2019: World Drumming and Culture, a 2-credit course will meet M/W from 9:20-10:30. Engage with performance traditions from various non-Western cultures, particularly those from sub-Saharan Africa and the Diaspora. Learn through hands-on experience playing drums, bells, and rattles, by singing songs, and through improvisation and listening drills. Study the cultural context associated with each musical style through reading assignments, examination of online videos, and class discussion. Enroll for course 392-B Topics – no prior musical experience necessary.

Model UN in New York City – study away on spring break

Take the spring semester POL 368 Model UN course, and travel to NYC for the Model UN conference at the end of March!

POL 368 is a regular course throughout the spring semester, with regular weekly classes. During the first half of the semester, students will prepare for the Model UN in NYC which takes place just after spring break, from March 29 to April 2.
Each year, the Augsburg delegation represents a different country with delegates assigned to particular UN committees or organizations, each with their own set of issues. Delegates have to understand the challenges of representing that country with its particular history, culture, and current foreign policy priorities and diplomatic objectives. At the same time, each delegate represents that country on a particular committee and will be researching issues such as climate change, human rights, trade, poverty, human trafficking, or arms control.

APPLICATIONS DUE NOVEMBER 1

Program cost $1,300
includes: round trip airfare to NYC, hotel accommodation, Model UN registration and delegate fees. There is no additional tuition fee for full-time undergrad students.
Students are responsible for their own transportation in NYC, as well as all meals during the program.

Auggie Pass now available for day students

Over 1100 Augsburg day students have picked up their Auggie Pass!

The Auggie Pass is an all-you-can-ride pass for Augsburg day students. Supported by the green fee, Metro Transit and Augsburg, the Auggie Pass is good on any bus, any time, and any light rail, any time, as well as the NorthStar line to Anoka.

Students can get their Auggie Pass at the Library Circulation Desk – please bring Augsburg ID.

The passes are good August 1, 2019 through May 30, 2020.

For students who use Metro Mobility, please email Mike Fetting, fettingm@augsburg.edu. The Auggie Pass does not work on Metro Mobility, so we have Go To cards with pre-loaded $180 value – and will add more value as needed.
