Remembering Alumna Ione (Agrimson) Hanson ’68

submitted by rolfn@augsburg.edu

We write to share the sad news that Ione Evangeline Agrimson Hanson ’68 passed away on January 11, 2024, at the age of 77.

Ione was part of a family with strong commitments to Augsburg, including her grandfather, aunts and uncles as well as four of her children who are Augsburg graduates. While attending Augsburg, Ione also met Mark Hanson ’68. During their life together, she and Mark raised six children.

Ione completed her studies at Augsburg with a degree in social work. Later, she earned an MSW at Hunter College of Social Work. Her vocation as a social worker focused on children and their well-being including serving as Director of Social Work for Children’s Medical Center – Minneapolis and St. Paul. As a person of faith Ione was involved in the Lutheran Church in varied contexts. She embraced the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with people throughout the world while traveling with Mark when he served as ELCA Presiding Bishop and President of the Lutheran World Federation.

Diagnosed in 2010 with memory loss, Ione and her family did not let memory loss define Ione’s personhood or diminish her dignity.

A funeral service will take place on Saturday, February 17 at 11:00 a.m. at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, with a visitation one hour before. Visit Central Lutheran’s website to watch online (*LINK*www.centralmpls.org).

Memorials suggested to Augsburg University, The Foundation at Children’s Minnesota, ELCA World Hunger or Redeemer Lutheran Church, Minneapolis, MN 55405.

If you agree to this study, I will ask you to complete a survey via Qualtrics. This survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Online Survey – Chance to Win $100 Gift Card

submitted by fleigr@augsburg.edu

Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).

For your time, participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

If you have any questions or concerns regarding participation in this study, please contact me at fleigr@augsburg.edu. If you would like to participate in this study, please click the link below. You will be taken to a secure, online survey where you will be presented with a consent form followed by the demographic screener and brief inventories. Upon completion of these, you will be shown the link to the final assessment.

You are invited to the 7th Fosdick Lecture on Preaching where Rev. Barbara Lundblad will address the topic “Shall the Christian Nationalists Win?” Join us at 10:00 am in Hoversten Chapel (livestream is also available). One of Harry Emerson Fosdick’s most well-known sermons is “Shall the Fundamentalists Win?” He preached that sermon in 1922: would he preach it today? Would we? What are the loudest Christian voices in the United States? Let’s reclaim our voices for the sake of the Gospel!

She received a B.A. in English from Augustana College, an M.Div. from Yale Divinity School, and a D.D. from Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago. She is an ordained minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and served 17 years as a parish pastor in New York City. She has been a campus pastor at Lehman College and New York University and has taught homiletics at several schools, including Yale Divinity School, Princeton Theological Seminary, Hebrew Union College, and in the D.Min. program of the Association of Chicago Theological Schools. She also served as president of the Academy of Homiletics and in 2014 the Academy honored her with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
She is the author of two books, Transforming the Stone: Preaching through Resistance to Change (2001) and Marking Time: Preaching Biblical Stories in Present Tense (2007) which grew out of the Beecher Lectures she delivered at Yale Divinity School. In 2010 she received the YDS Alumni Award for Excellence in Theological Education. She is currently the editor of “Preaching Helps,” a regular feature of the journal Currents in Theology and Mission.

You are being invited to participate in a research study on investigating influences of intrapersonal factors on the relationship between casual sex and mental health. As such, if you indicated you were in a relationship for longer than one month, you do not meet our study eligibility criteria. We respect and appreciate individuals in various types of relationships, including open or ethically non-monogamous ones, but our current study’s scope is limited to investigating casual sex in those who identify as single (or recently single). If you agree to this study, I will ask you to complete a survey via Qualtrics. This survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. After completing all the survey questions, you will be invited, if you wish, to provide contact information to enter in the raffle to win one of three $50 gift card prizes, and/or emailed the results at the end of the study’s conclusion.

submitted by harrisdd@augsburg.edu

My name is Dean Harris, and I am a doctoral student in the Clinical Psychology Department at Augsburg University. I am conducting this study as partial fulfillment of my doctoral degree, with Dr. Patricia Hopkins-Smith as my advisor.

You are being invited to participate in a research study on investigating influences of intrapersonal factors on the relationship between casual sex and mental health. Our study focuses on experiences of casual sex in individuals who identify as single or recently single (i.e., have not been in a relationship longer than one month).

If you have any questions now or later, you may contact me, Dean Harris at 612-239-2534 or harrisdd@augsburg.edu. You can also contact my advisor, Dr. Patricia Hopkins-Smith at 612-330-1567 or hopkinss@augsburg.edu. If you contact me or my advisor, understand that your anonymity cannot be guaranteed; however, if you decide to participate, your data will not be connected to your name. If you have questions about your rights as a research subject or want to discuss problems/complaints about the research study, send an email to IRB@augsburg.edu.

New Year, New Posting Policy: Review These Guidelines

submitted by farrisr@augsburg.edu

Students, faculty, and staff:

The university’s posting policy has been updated with a new approval requirement and submission process as of January 2024. Going forward, all posters must be approved and stamped by the Dean of Students Office—not the Copy Center—in order to be displayed on campus.

STUDENT ORGS:
Student organizations that wish to submit a poster for approval must do so through the university’s Lytho project management system. A registered officer from the student organization must upload their poster and include a cost center and fund to which to charge printing costs.

1. Go to https://augsburg.ignite.inmotionnow.com/
2. Select “Log in with SSO” and, if prompted, sign into Inside Augsburg.
3. From the “Requests” menu, select the gray “Add Request” button in the upper right-hand corner.
4. Title your request with the name of your poster and select “Create Request.”
5. Select “Poster Approval Request Form” from the Request Form drop-down menu.
6. Complete all fields, upload your poster, and select “Submit Request.”

The Dean of Students Office will review the poster. If approved, the Copy Center will print and stamp the posters. The officer will be notified once the posters are ready for pickup in the Copy Center.

FACULTY, STAFF, AND DEPARTMENTS:
Faculty and staff may use the university’s Lytho project management system for poster submissions and approvals as outlined above. Faculty and staff may also print posters directly from the Copy Center. Once printed, faculty and staff must bring their posters to the Dean of Students Office (Memorial 118) to get them approved and stamped before posting on campus.

QUESTIONS?
If you have any questions, please contact the Dean of Students Office at deanofstudents@augsburg.edu. A Lytho project submission tutorial is available on the Marketing and Communication website.
