Mental Health Impact of Operation Metro Surge—Participate and Invite Others

You are invited to participate in a study focusing on the mental health impact of Operation Metro Surge, in which the Department of Homeland Security sent approximately 3000 ICE and Border Control agents to the Twin Cities beginning in December 2025 and officially lasting through mid-February of 2026.
Prof. James Vela-McConnell, in the Department of Sociology here at Augsburg, is conducting an anonymous survey that is intended to further document the impact of this event on our community and ourselves and you are invited to participate. This online survey should take approximately 30 minutes and can be completed at your convenience. At the end of the survey, you will have the opportunity to enter a raffle for one of six $50 gift cards or one of eight $25 gift. Alternatively, the raffle winners may choose to donate the value of their gift card to a local organization working to support immigrant residents of the Twin Cities metro.

The first step to changing the future is imagining a better one. Write a postcard from a greener future (75 words or fewer– postcards are small!) in which you describe an activity or a place that reflects the climate-friendlier future we all want. Are you writing from a city full of rooftop gardens? From a town that defeated a proposal for an environmentally-devastating data center? From a cruise ship that runs on solar power? From a future free of single-use plastics? Feel free to be very down-to-earth or wildly fantastical.

Staff volunteers are needed to help make the commencement ceremony on May 7 a meaningful and successful experience for our graduates and their families.
Volunteer Roles Include:
– Accessible Seating Ushers, Greeters, and Wayfinding: Manage the accessible seating table and seating areas; assist guests with finding a seating location and/or other facilities; hand out programs; provide assistance for wayfinding and/or other needs. (Training at 4:00, Shift 4:30 – 7:30 p.m.)
– Graduate Ushers/Tunnel Managers: Staff will help students find their way to the lineup tunnel and manage the line lengths to help with a seamless procession.(Training at 4:00, Shift 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.)
– Guest Ushers, Greeters, and Wayfinding: Greet family members, and guests; assist families with finding a seating location and/or other facilities; hand out programs; provide assistance for wayfinding and/or other needs.(Training at 4:00, Shift 4:30 – 7:30 p.m.)

This year’s lecture will be delivered by Rev. Alan Storey, a renowned Gospel storyteller and facilitator of personal and political change from South Africa. A former conscientious objector during the apartheid regime, Rev. Storey has dedicated his life to the “experimental practice of the Sermon on the Mount,” working extensively on issues of social justice, human rights, and reconciliation.

This seminar-style course sees the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence as a special opportunity to reconsider the history and legacies of the American Revolution. In the 1760s and 1770s, English speaking-people fought amongst themselves over Indigenous lands in North America, sparking a civil war that eventually turned into a world war. The conflict not only spawned a new nation—the United States—but also an “age of revolutions” that changed the lives of millions around the globe. Topics covered include: the causes of the Revolution, daily life in a society torn apart by violence, the experiences of African Americans as well as Native peoples and nations, the significance of gender and family, struggles to define democracy, and the history of how the Revolution has been remembered in different ways by different Americans.

– Have a 3.5 or higher to conduct research or attend graduate school abroad
– Be an active member in the Augsburg community or your home community
– Have effective skills to adapt to another culture and serve as a cultural ambassador of the U.S. to your host country

Bella Olson and David Mejia spent last summer and fall designing two large wall paintings that now hang in our office hallway. The students created the art in memorial of our dear colleague, Dr. Jennie Diaz, who sadly passed away in spring 2024. The students used Dr. Diaz’s values as inspiration for the pieces. You can read more about the inspiration and intent for this art installation at the link below.

What? Light refreshments will be served. The students will share a few words about their process and we will all gather to remember Dr. Diaz, and to celebrate these beautiful works of art.

Augsburg students can spend the fall semester in Northern Ireland while earning major, minor, and elective credit toward their degree. While especially relevant for Political Science and History students, this program is also a great fit for those studying communication, religion, philosophy, sociology, English, business, STEM fields, and more.
Coursework completed on the program transfers back as Augsburg credit, including:

The West Bank Business Association is hosting a community meal series highlighting West Bank restaurants, immigrant entrepreneurship, and cultural storytelling through food. These Food and Culture Talks provide an opportunity to get to know West Bank restaurants and to support small businesses in the wake of Operation Metro Surge. Each event will feature a hosted meal and cultural storytelling by a guest speaker. The first Food and Culture Talk is today, April 10, from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Tamu Grill (1829 Riverside Ave. S.). This seminar-style course sees the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence as a special opportunity to reconsider the history and legacies of the American Revolution. In the 1760s and 1770s, English speaking-people fought amongst themselves over Indigenous lands in North America, sparking a civil war that eventually turned into a world war. The conflict not only spawned a new nation—the United States—but also an “age of revolutions” that changed the lives of millions around the globe. Topics covered include: the causes of the Revolution, daily life in a society torn apart by violence, the experiences of African Americans as well as Native peoples and nations, the significance of gender and family, struggles to define democracy, and the history of how the Revolution has been remembered in different ways by different Americans.

Please join the Augsburg University Education Department as we celebrate two of our student artists. Bella Olson and David Mejia spent last summer and fall designing two large wall paintings that now hang in our office hallway. The students created the art in memorial of our dear colleague, Dr. Jennie Diaz, who sadly passed away in spring 2024. The students used Dr. Diaz’s values as inspiration for the pieces. You can read more about the inspiration and intent for this art installation at the link below.

Spend a Semester Abroad Studying the Northern Ireland Conflict

Augsburg students can spend the fall semester in Northern Ireland while earning major, minor, and elective credit toward their degree. While especially relevant for Political Science and History students, this program is also a great fit for those studying communication, religion, philosophy, sociology, English, business, STEM fields, and more.
Coursework completed on the program transfers back as Augsburg credit, including:
– Political Science credit (upper-division)
– History credit (upper-division)
– Social Science or Humanities electives
– Augsburg Experience (study abroad requirement)
We encourage students from any major to apply as long as they understand how the credits will apply to their degree. This makes it possible to stay on track for graduation while completing core and elective requirements in an international setting!

Seeking Asian-American College Students to Participate in a Survey About the Model Minority Myth

Hello, my name is ShaShee Yang, and I am a Clinical Psychology Doctoral Student at Augsburg University. I am conducting a research study about the internalization of Model Minority Myth stereotypes and their impacts on depressive and anxiety symptoms in Asian-American college students. I would love for you to be a part of the study! The study will consist of a brief demographic survey and three standardized questionnaires asking questions about internalization of the Model Minority Myth, current depressive symptoms, and current anxiety symptoms. The entire survey should take approximately 20 to 40 minutes to complete. This year’s week celebrating collegiate recovery is Monday, 4/13, through Friday, 4/17. The StepUp program will be celebrating all week with a unique event each day, and they are collaborating with the Augsburg Psychological assoisation for their first event, a free Narcan training, where students, staff, and faculty will be trained on how to prevent an emergency overdose situation using Narcan. A Fulbright Award gives you the opportunity to teach, research, or study abroad for an academic year after graduation. The process of applying is invaluable and winning the award is a life-changing experience.
To be eligible and competitive you need to:
– Be a U.S. citizen or national
– Have a 3.0 or higher GPA for serving as an English Teaching Assistant
– Have a 3.5 or higher to conduct research or attend graduate school abroad
– Be an active member in the Augsburg community or your home community
– Have effective skills to adapt to another culture and serve as a cultural ambassador of the U.S. to your host country
If you are a junior or senior, you would start working on your application this summer in preparation for an early fall 2026 submission. Selections are made in Spring 2027 for placement in Fall 2027.

Staff volunteers are needed to help make the commencement ceremony on May 7 a meaningful and successful experience for our graduates and their families.
Volunteer Roles Include:
– Accessible Seating Ushers, Greeters, and Wayfinding: Manage the accessible seating table and seating areas; assist guests with finding a seating location and/or other facilities; hand out programs; provide assistance for wayfinding and/or other needs. (Training at 4:00, Shift 4:30 – 7:30 p.m.)
– Graduate Ushers/Tunnel Managers: Staff will help students find their way to the lineup tunnel and manage the line lengths to help with a seamless procession.(Training at 4:00, Shift 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.)
– Guest Ushers, Greeters, and Wayfinding: Greet family members, and guests; assist families with finding a seating location and/or other facilities; hand out programs; provide assistance for wayfinding and/or other needs.(Training at 4:00, Shift 4:30 – 7:30 p.m.)

This year’s lecture will be delivered by Rev. Alan Storey, a renowned Gospel storyteller and facilitator of personal and political change from South Africa. A former conscientious objector during the apartheid regime, Rev. Storey has dedicated his life to the “experimental practice of the Sermon on the Mount,” working extensively on issues of social justice, human rights, and reconciliation.

This course introduces supply chain management and the role of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems in coordinating business operations. Spend a Semester Abroad Studying the Northern Ireland Conflict

Augsburg students can spend the fall semester in Northern Ireland while earning major, minor, and elective credit toward their degree. While especially relevant for Political Science and History students, this program is also a great fit for those studying communication, religion, philosophy, sociology, English, business, STEM fields, and more.
Coursework completed on the program transfers back as Augsburg credit, including:
– Political Science credit (upper-division)
– History credit (upper-division)
– Social Science or Humanities electives
– Augsburg Experience (study abroad requirement)

Standardized Patient
Job Overview:
We are seeking 2-3 actors to perform as standardized patients for the Augsburg Doctoral Psychology Program. Standardized patients will act as children and adolescents participating in a psychological evaluation to support student learning. Standardized patients will have scripts, but some improvisation may also be required.
Details:
Selected actors will participate in a one-hour training with Dr. Frank. During that time, actors will receive character descriptions, scripts, and additional guidance on the standardized patient role. Following the one-hour training, multiple opportunities will be available for actors to participate in 1–2-hour training event activities with psychology students on Augsburg campus.
Pay: This job will pay $30 per hour.
Schedule: The in-person training session is tentatively scheduled for Friday, April 10th, 2026, from 4-5PM. Event dates are tentatively scheduled for Monday, April 13th 4-6PM; Monday and April 20th 4-6PM. Additional dates and times may be added based on student need and actor availability.
