Please join Hmong Women Together for our first event of the Spring semester. We will be discussing two important topics for this event; one will be focused on the traditional gender roles that we see within the Hmong community and in society. The other topic that will be discussed is how we can further understand and help ourselves to better improve our world, reality, and those around us! The plant and the pot are meant to represent you and how you can thrive, grow, and prosper– but only if you remember to prioritize and take care of yourself.
The main purpose of this event is to deconstruct the social norms while still acknowledging and respecting our cultural roots and traditions. In having this event, our intent is to deliver a positive experience for our members to feel welcomed and accepted.

Although there have been gains in diversity across various healthcare sectors, leadership positions continue to be disproportionately held by White men. Understanding the impact that social determinants of health like racism and discrimination have on healthcare outcomes for Black women, it is bad business for them to be underrepresented at the decision and policy-making levels in healthcare. How do we solve this pervasive problem?
Join us as we share how the University of Chicago Medical Center (UCM) is leveraging a formal sponsorship program focused on increasing the representation of Black women at the senior leadership level. Also, participants will learn how UCM is using a formal sponsorship program – including critical conversations at the executive leadership level about the lived experience of Black women – to accelerate workplace culture transformation and advance healthcare equity. We will also explore how this may be applied in other organizations.
Learning Outcomes
Learn how advancing more Black women to leadership roles in healthcare impacts health equity
Recognize sponsorship as an accelerator for career advancement and workplace culture transformation

The murder of George Floyd and the ensuing protests calling for racial justice have reverberated throughout Minnesota, around the country, and the world. How have these events disturbed and reoriented the understanding of racial justice? What does this reckoning mean for people who espouse a religious or spiritual worldview? How does this moment provide an opportunity to reaffirm, rearticulate, or revise how religious and spiritual traditions work towards racial justice?
The Batalden Seminar in Applied Ethics on February 8th, 11:00-12:00 will address these questions. It will highlight a video series of practitioners from differing religious, spiritual, and secular perspectives in conversation on the issue of racial justice interspersed with a panel discussion with the video participants and student respondents.

Gain strategies for creating formal sponsorship programs for Black Women in your organization

Dr. Fernanda Soto (CGEE Nicaragua) and Dr. Ann Lutterman-Aguilar (CGEE Mexico) are presenting a session with Dr. Michele Belliveau (West Chester U) on Fri., January 21 at American Association of Colleges & Universities (AAC&U) Annual Meeting on “Educating for Democracy.” The session’s title is “Democracy as Transgressive Practices: Community-Based Global Learning.” Through the engagement with four educational experiences, the presenters contend that programs that address democratic practices, at home and abroad, grapple with questions of social justice that ought to “gesture” toward decolonial educational practices (Stein et al). They say “gesture” because, while still grounded in Western educational paradigms, they engage with other epistemological and ontological forms of learning and embodying politics that can help participants to rethink their own political practices at an individual and collective level.
