We have multiple summer opportunities available for students.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 12th – July 27th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 16th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research is going on in your department!

ED Talk January 19: “Better Teaching/Better Arguments: Argumentation Based Learning Experiences”

At its heart, every discipline teaches students how to make arguments- about gravity, viruses, truth, God, politics, etc. Unfortunately, for many instructors arguments in class seem like inviting conflict, distraction, and low course evaluations. And it’s true, if done poorly, argumentation in the classroom can be alienating, traumatizing, and counterproductive. But, when done well, argumentation in the classroom can build relationships, empathy, and more rigorous evidence-based learning. Join Bob Groven, Associate Professor of Communication Studies and Faculty Director of the MN Urban Debate League, for an overview of how to use argumentative experiences to create more dynamic, inclusive, and student empowered classes.

CTL will offer ED Talks (based on the concept of TED Talks) before each faculty meeting from 3:10-3:30pm over Zoom (link provided below; Augsburg login required). This year’s theme is “The Future of the Professoriate at Augsburg”, and 2021-2022 ED talks will be framed under this broad theme that speaks to our “new normal” and beyond. The NASA Space Grant scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

This competitive program awards up to 6 scholarships for Spring 2022 (totaling $8000), in the following areas:
Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

What is the Louis Stokes North Star STEM Alliance (LS-NSSA)?

Called LS-NSSA for short, this program is an initiative funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) which is intended to double the number of Black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Alaska Native and Pacific Islander students receiving baccalaureate degrees in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in a five-year period.

The Augsburg LS-NSSA program provides stipends, research opportunities, and more to students who meet the eligibility criteria and complete a program application. All students are welcome to participate in LS-NSSA events and programming.

EVERFI Training Invitations

Beginning January 17, Human Resources is launching online training for faculty, staff and student employees on three university workplace topics: information security, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and discrimination & sexual harassment prevention. Training in all three areas helps strengthen Augsburg as a workplace, helps protect the rights of students, faculty and staff, and responds to requirements from the Department of Education (under Title IV) and our insurance providers.

On January 17, employees will receive an email invitation from EVERFI, our online training provider, with links to the three topic modules. The training can also be accessed by logging into Inside Augsburg and clicking on Administrative Tasks > Training. Employees will have until March 18 (60 days) to complete the three required training topics.

Note: student employees are only being assigned the FERPA training at this time.

2022-2023 Multicultural Life Scholarship Application is open! This is a great opportunity for underrepresented undergraduate students in the Augsburg Day Program. Those who are eligible can be awarded between 2,500-5,000 annual, renewable awards.

If you are a current scholarship recipient and want to renew your award make sure to fill the application!

These scholarships include: ASIA Scholarship, Bonnie Wallace American Indian Scholarship, HOLA Scholarship, LQBTQIA+ Student Services Scholarship, M. Anita Gay Hawthorne Scholarship, and Scholastic Connection Scholarship.

Alternative Spring Break Trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico

Augsburg Campus Ministries invites you to participate in its alternative spring break to Albuquerque, New Mexico, one of the oldest cities in the United States. Albuquerque has a unique multicultural history and heritage with Native American and Hispanic and Latino cultural influences. The city is located in north central New Mexico near the Sandia Mountains.
While in Albuquerque, we will be partnering with Service Learning Camps, and our days will be structured with community service projects, time for reflection, learning opportunities, and visiting local attractions.

Dates of Trip: March 12-19, 2022
Destination: Albuquerque, New Mexico
Transportation: Bus

2022-2023 Multicultural Life Scholarship Application is open! This is a great opportunity for underrepresented undergraduate students in the Augsburg Day Program. Those who are eligible can be awarded between 2,500-5,000 annual, renewable awards.

If you are a current scholarship recipient and want to renew your award make sure to fill the application!

These scholarships include: ASIA Scholarship, Bonnie Wallace American Indian Scholarship, HOLA Scholarship, LQBTQIA+ Student Services Scholarship, M. Anita Gay Hawthorne Scholarship, and Scholastic Connection Scholarship.

DACA and undocumented students are eligible and highly encouraged to apply. Promise, Presidential and ActSix Scholarship recipients and International Students (F-1 and J-1) are not eligible for this award.

What is the Louis Stokes North Star STEM Alliance (LS-NSSA)?

Called LS-NSSA for short, this program is an initiative funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) which is intended to double the number of Black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Alaska Native and Pacific Islander students receiving baccalaureate degrees in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in a five-year period.

The Augsburg LS-NSSA program provides stipends, research opportunities, and more to students who meet the eligibility criteria and complete a program application. All students are welcome to participate in LS-NSSA events and programming.

We have multiple summer opportunities available for students.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 12th – July 27th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 16th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research is going on in your department!

Counseling Walk-in Hours Now Available at CWC

Starting this semester, the Center for Wellness and Counseling (CWC) will be holding weekly walk-in counseling hours. Walk-in hours are Mondays 10:00-12:00, Wednesdays 1:00-3:00, and Thursdays 1:00-3:00 anytime classes are in session. Walk-in hours will be virtual in order to maintain the health and safety of the campus, but students must come directly to CWC to access walk-in hours (a virtual space will be provided in our office suite). Walk-in appointments will be brief (20-30 minutes) and will be offered on a first come, first served basis. Walk-in appointments are ideal for students looking for a quick and easy way to get started in counseling, students in need of crisis support, or students who desire a one-time non-judgemental perspective when considering an immediate decision or problem. ED Talk January 19: “Better Teaching/Better Arguments: Argumentation Based Learning Experiences”

At its heart, every discipline teaches students how to make arguments- about gravity, viruses, truth, God, politics, etc. Unfortunately, for many instructors arguments in class seem like inviting conflict, distraction, and low course evaluations. And it’s true, if done poorly, argumentation in the classroom can be alienating, traumatizing, and counterproductive. But, when done well, argumentation in the classroom can build relationships, empathy, and more rigorous evidence-based learning. Join Bob Groven, Associate Professor of Communication Studies and Faculty Director of the MN Urban Debate League, for an overview of how to use argumentative experiences to create more dynamic, inclusive, and student empowered classes.

CTL will offer ED Talks (based on the concept of TED Talks) before each faculty meeting from 3:10-3:30pm over Zoom (link provided below; Augsburg login required). This year’s theme is “The Future of the Professoriate at Augsburg”, and 2021-2022 ED talks will be framed under this broad theme that speaks to our “new normal” and beyond. The NASA Space Grant scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

This competitive program awards up to 6 scholarships for Spring 2022 (totaling $8000), in the following areas:
Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

HECUA Ceases Operations

As of December 31, 2021, the Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs, commonly known as HECUA, ceased operations.

HECUA’s mission was to offer off-campus academic programs for students to do integrative intellectual, political, and artistic work in support of movements for social justice, peace, and environmental sustainability in the U.S. and abroad.

HECUA had its roots at Augsburg, starting with sociology professor Joel Torstenson’s 1967 sabbatical report on community-based learning and his co-creation of the Crisis Colony the following year in the aftermath of the assissination of Martin Luther King, Jr. From that commitment, both the Center for Global Education & Experience and HECUA were born. Over the years, many Augsburg faculty have supported HECUA’s work as board members and many staff have championed HECUA experiences for many students..

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the suspension of most of HECUA’s international programs and significantly reduced enrollment in its domestic programs. While HECUA did offer some limited programs over the last two years, the ongoing pandemic does not allow them to continue to operate.

This is disappointing news for Auggies who had been hoping to participate in HECUA programs in the future, as well as alumni, community partners, and others who have been touched by or supported the mission of HECUA. But HECUA’s legacy will live on through the thousands of alumni who are leading and fostering justice and peace-building efforts around the world.

The theme for this year is Revolutionary Leadership: Through the Practice of Care for Ourselves & Each Other. With all the events that have occurred these past couple of years, we are all still perfecting our definition of what it means to lead without jeopardizing the health and wellbeing of our community and ourselves. This institute will help create a place for students to explore leadership that prioritizes self care and community care.

All Chartered Organizations must send 2 representatives and Commissioned Organizations must 3 representatives. A student can represent a max of 2 students orgs at one time. It is a requirement as leaders of your orgs to attend the Institute in order to remain in good standing to be rechartered/recommissioned in the spring.

We have hosted the Minnesota Debate & Advocacy Workshop (MDAW) at Augsburg University for more than a decade. Last year, camps were held virtually. We’re back for 2022!

We are excited to invite your child to speech & debate camp at MDAW this summer- now with in-person and virtual options!

Join us for deep learning, skill-building, fun, and community this summer. Both in-person and virtual options are available. In-person camp takes place at Augsburg University’s campus in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The NASA Space Grant scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

This competitive program awards up to 6 scholarships for Spring 2022 (totaling $8000), in the following areas:
Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

Our new debate season begins very soon! Middle school debate tournaments will happen from January-March, and we need your help to make it happen!

Judges observe debate rounds, pick a winner, and provide feedback to both teams. No experience needed- we’ll train you! We’re looking for all people who are interested in supporting students as they improve their argumentation and public speaking skills.

We have multiple summer opportunities available for students.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 12th – July 27th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 16th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research is going on in your department!

ED Talk January 19: “Better Teaching/Better Arguments: Argumentation Based Learning Experiences”

At its heart, every discipline teaches students how to make arguments- about gravity, viruses, truth, God, politics, etc. Unfortunately, for many instructors arguments in class seem like inviting conflict, distraction, and low course evaluations. And it’s true, if done poorly, argumentation in the classroom can be alienating, traumatizing, and counterproductive. But, when done well, argumentation in the classroom can build relationships, empathy, and more rigorous evidence-based learning. Join Bob Groven, Associate Professor of Communication Studies and Faculty Director of the MN Urban Debate League, for an overview of how to use argumentative experiences to create more dynamic, inclusive, and student em/powered classes.

CTL will offer ED Talks (based on the concept of TED Talks) before each faculty meeting from 3:10-3:30pm over Zoom (link provided below; Augsburg login required). This year’s theme is “The Future of the Professoriate at Augsburg”, and 2021-2022 ED talks will be framed under this broad theme that speaks to our “new normal” and beyond. Alternative Spring Break Trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico

Augsburg Campus Ministries invites you to participate in its alternative spring break to Albuquerque, New Mexico, one of the oldest cities in the United States. Albuquerque has a unique multicultural history and heritage with Native American and Hispanic and Latino cultural influences. The city is located in north central New Mexico near the Sandia Mountains.
While in Albuquerque, we will be partnering with Service Learning Camps, and our days will be structured with community service projects, time for reflection, learning opportunities, and visiting local attractions.

Dates of Trip: March 12-19, 2022
Destination: Albuquerque, New Mexico
Transportation: Bus
Total Cost: $275, includes most lodging, transportation, and most meals. Please register by February 10, 2022 (see below). Please let us know if the cost presents a barrier to participation for you.

2022-2023 Multicultural Life Scholarship Application is open! This is a great opportunity for underrepresented undergraduate students in the Augsburg Day Program. Those who are eligible can be awarded between 2,500-5,000 annual, renewable awards.

If you are a current scholarship recipient and want to renew your award make sure to fill the application!

These scholarships include: ASIA Scholarship, Bonnie Wallace American Indian Scholarship, HOLA Scholarship, LQBTQIA+ Student Services Scholarship, M. Anita Gay Hawthorne Scholarship, and Scholastic Connection Scholarship.

DACA and undocumented students are eligible and highly encouraged to apply. Promise, Presidential and ActSix Scholarship recipients and International Students (F-1 and J-1) are not eligible for this award.

Counseling Walk-in Hours Now Available at CWC

Starting this semester, the Center for Wellness and Counseling (CWC) will be holding weekly walk-in counseling hours. Walk-in hours are Mondays 10:00-12:00, Wednesdays 1:00-3:00, and Thursdays 1:00-3:00 anytime classes are in session. Walk-in hours will be virtual in order to maintain the health and safety of the campus, but students must come directly to CWC to access walk-in hours (a virtual space will be provided in our office suite). Walk-in appointments will be brief (20-30 minutes) and will be offered on a first come, first served basis. Walk-in appointments are ideal for students looking for a quick and easy way to get started in counseling, students in need of crisis support, or students who desire a one-time non-judgemental perspective when considering an immediate decision or problem.
