For many the holiday season can be one of rest and joy, while for others it can be a time of stress, sadness, and loneliness. Knowing this, and in anticipation of the long winter break during which the CWC office is closed, we wanted to remind the campus community of an important souce of support available when our office is closed (for long breaks as well as simply during weekends and evenings). Any time CWC is closed, phone counseling and crisis support are available to students by calling CWC’s main line (612-330-1707) and pressing #1. We urge you to use this resource now, during the break, and any time it might be useful during the academic year. And we wish you a break that is what you need it to be.

A new semester is just around the corner, and luckily we are expecting new international students to join us this spring—representing countries like Egypt, Sweden, China, South Korea and Norway to name a few!

Our office, the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), is looking for faculty and staff members who are interested in hosting our new international students for a dinner off-campus in your home.

Here are the details:
Date: Thursday, Jan 6, 2021
Time: Pick up at 5 p.m. with a return to campus around 7 p.m.

We ask that our hosts pick up students from campus and return them once dinner is completed. The new incoming group will consist of 7-15 international students.

COVID status: All the new international students coming from abroad are required to follow the CDC and MDH guidelines, with a required 7-day quarantine (unvaccinated exempt students), and COVID testing on day 3-5 upon arrival.

All students will show proof of a negative COVID test prior to traveling to the United States (tested 24 hours before departure), proof of recovery and/or proof of vaccination.

Any students needing quarantine, will have ended this period on January 6. And will have received their first dose of the vaccine.

Congratulations to Joseph Connelly, Experiential Education Specialist with CGEE, for his published article in the most recent volume of “Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal (JHE)” (Volume 10, Number 2 (2021). This volume is focused on Solidarity and Global Citizenship.

His article titled, “A Long, Loving Look at the Real: An Experiential Ignatian Approach to Immersion” can be found online for free. You can find excerpts at the CGEE blog, as well as the link to download the full article.

Abstract:
International travel is a popular and widespread practice among higher education institutions, but the pedagogy and approach to these programs varies widely. The Center for Global Education and Experience at Augsburg University facilitates international immersion programs for U.S. students, faculty, and staff focused on social justice and solidarity; this approach is particularly attractive to Jesuit institutions and has led to fruitful collaborations. This article offers an experienced immersion facilitator’s personal reflections on designing and implementing immersion programs and applies key themes of Ignatian spirituality and pedagogy to the experience of international immersion travel.
