Rangel Summer Enrichment Program in D.C. is Live

The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program is a six-week summer program, held in Washington, DC, designed to provide undergraduate students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, a greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers. This program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, women, and those with financial need.

The Program has two major components: First, in order to enhance participants’ academic preparation to work in international affairs, the Program provides two courses and a seminar that focuses on enhancing knowledge and skills related to U.S. foreign policy, economics, and writing. In addition, in order to provide greater insight into the foreign policy-making process and international affairs careers, the Rangel Program introduces the participants to a wide range of government and non-government professionals who work on global issues and also arranges visits to various institutions involved in international affairs. The Program also helps students explore graduate school, scholarship, fellowship, internship, and professional options in international affairs.

Program Benefits:

The Program covers the costs for tuition, travel, housing, and two meals per day.

The Program provides a stipend for $3,300.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students, with at least sophomore status on the date of the application deadline.

Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale at the time of application.

Applicants must be a U.S. citizen.

Application deadline is February 15th, 2022

During the June 9, 2020 University Town Hall, President Pribbenow announced seven new equity initiatives born out of response to the murder of George Floyd and Augsburg’s renewed commitment to accelerate and expand upon our university’s efforts to promote equity and inclusion during a national moment of racial and social justice reawakening. Sign up for Emergency Notifications to Stay Updated on Winter Weather Changes

Beginning this year, Augsburg will no longer be posting information about changes in operations brought on by dangerous winter weather through media outlets such as television and radio stations. The news channels’ systems are designed for non-residential K-12 schools, and so only provide options for “open” or “closed” that don’t describe the more nuanced changes that happen at Augsburg.

The most efficient way to make sure you’re informed when Augsburg cancels in-person classes or makes other changes is to sign up for Augsburg’s Emergency Notification text messages. You can do this (or confirm that you are already registered) by clicking “Emergency Notifications” in the left hand menu on Inside Augsburg. In addition, when decisions are made to cancel classes or modify operations due to weather, we update the alert banner at the top of augsburg.edu and post an announcement on Inside Augsburg.

With Thanksgiving around the corner, Campus Kitchen would like to present our Campus Kitchen Fall Food Drive!! For this drive, we are asking for donations from staff, faculty, and students alike. As you all may know the Campus Cupboard is open Mondays-Thursdays and provides a wide range of food, such as produce, canned goods, snacks, etc. for all students. However, with the amount of days and hours that we’re open we are not always able to keep up with the demand for certain goods for everyone.

The week of November 15th, we will be placing donation bins around campus with flyers stating the kinds of items that we are looking for and items that we are not looking for. Please be on the lookout for those! It would also be very much appreciated if you or anyone you know can help donate to the aid of your fellow Augsburg Community!

Student Stress and Coping Study

Between the COVID-19 pandemic, political turmoil, and growing racial injustice in our country, the past year and a half have been full of unique challenges. We invite you to participate in a study examining student experiences and mental health during the pandemic and following the murder of George Floyd.

To better understand student experiences and mental health during this time, sociology professor James Vela-McConnell is conducting a study of current, degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students. This study involves a 20-to-30-minute, mostly multiple-choice online questionnaire which can be completed at your convenience. Participation in the questionnaire will be completely confidential, and automatically enter you into a raffle for one of three $100 gift cards, one of six $50 gift cards, or one of eight $25 gift cards from Target. A report based on this study may also be shared with the Center for Wellness and Counseling at Augsburg to allow them to better serve the mental health needs of students.

Campus Dining Spaces Expanded in Hagfors Center

Augsburg is designating additional spaces in the Hagfors Center for indoor dining. In designated dining spaces on campus, individuals may remove their masks for eating and drinking, but we ask that you put your mask back on afterward.

Current dining spaces include:
* The Commons and Einstein’s in the Christensen Center
* Nabo and the lobby of the Oren Gateway Center
* Kafe Kafeega and the surrounding area on the second floor of Hagfors Center.

To that list, we are adding:
* The Hagfors Center main level lobby and third floor balcony.

Dining is also permitted:
* In closed rooms hosting meetings or events catered by Augsburg Dining Services
* Alone in individual offices or meeting spaces with the door closed
* In residence hall units.

We plan to add microwaves for use by students, faculty, and staff in the Oren Gateway Center and Hagfors Center lobbies, but delivery of those appliances may be delayed by supply chain issues, as we have seen with other recent fixture changes.

Augsburg isn’t able to host a flu shot event due to staffing shortages this year, but the People’s Center Clinic on the corner of Riverside and 20th avenues is providing flu vaccinations during its open hours and welcomes members of the Augsburg community to make an appointment to get their shot.

Rangel Summer Enrichment Program in D.C. is Live

The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program is a six-week summer program, held in Washington, DC, designed to provide undergraduate students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, a greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers. This program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, women, and those with financial need.

The Program has two major components: First, in order to enhance participants’ academic preparation to work in international affairs, the Program provides two courses and a seminar that focuses on enhancing knowledge and skills related to U.S. foreign policy, economics, and writing. In addition, in order to provide greater insight into the foreign policy-making process and international affairs careers, the Rangel Program introduces the participants to a wide range of government and non-government professionals who work on global issues and also arranges visits to various institutions involved in international affairs. The Program also helps students explore graduate school, scholarship, fellowship, internship, and professional options in international affairs.

Program Benefits:

The Program covers the costs for tuition, travel, housing, and two meals per day.

The Program provides a stipend for $3,300.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students, with at least sophomore status on the date of the application deadline.

Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale at the time of application.

Applicants must be a U.S. citizen.

Want to learn more about off-campus research opportunities in STEM? The National Science Foundation supports programs called Research Experiences for Undergraduates or REUs.

On Friday, November 12, from 4:00 – 5:30 PM, Dixie Shafer of URGO will lead a workshop on how to search for and apply to paid off-campus Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) programs in STEM fields.

This will be a virtual event designed to help students learn more about how to search for and apply to summer research opportunities nationally as well as locally.

Biomedical Engineering Summer Research Program

The Biomedical Engineering Department and Center for Biomedical Informatics at Wake Forest School of Medicine will offer several summer research opportunities in 2022 focusing on Imaging and Mechanics-based Projects on Accidental Cases of Trauma (IMPACT) and other biomedical engineering and informatics topics. Students selected for this Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program will receive a stipend and on-campus housing. Campus Kitchen Fall Food Drive

With Thanksgiving around the corner, Campus Kitchen would like to present our Campus Kitchen Fall Food Drive! For this drive, we are asking for donations from staff, faculty, and students alike. As you all may know the Campus Cupboard is open Mondays-Thursdays and provides a wide range of food, such as produce, canned goods, snacks, etc. for all students. However, with the amount of days and hours that we’re open we are not always able to keep up with the demand for certain goods for everyone.

The week of November 15th, we will be placing donation bins around campus with flyers stating the kinds of items that we are looking for and items that we are not looking for. Please be on the lookout for those! It would also be very much appreciated if you or anyone you know can help donate to the aid of your fellow Augsburg Community!

Bookstore Accounts are Opening for Spring — Here’s What You Need to Know

Bookstore charge accounts will open the day after you’ve registered for spring term. The last day to charge online orders is Sunday, January 16th, 2022. The last day to charge in-store purchases is Wednesday, January 19th, 2022. Due to the financial aid cycle, you can only charge expenses to your bookstore account during this specific period. Be sure to plan ahead!

HBP at Garden Party Books in Rochester on Friday

On Friday, November 12, from 6:30–8:30 p.m., poet Jean Prokott will be at the new Garden Party Books (602 7th St NW, Rochester, MN) for a poetry reading and book signing. Jean was awarded the 2021 Howling Bird Press Poetry Prize for The Second Longest Day of the Year from among more than two hundred submissions received from across the country. Prokott will be joined by local poets and writers, Sue McMillan (Rochester poet laureate), Lisa Higgs, Pamela Sinicrope, and Melissa Brandt, who will read a few poems to open the evening. Light food and refreshments will be provided.

The Second Longest Day of the Year tackles a variety of subjects, such as mental health, the pandemic, women’s rights, the environment, and more, with notes of both seriousness and humor.

According to Sierra DeMulder, author of Today Means Amen, “The Second Longest Day of the Year offers us a poetic landscape that is easily entered but not lightly forgotten. Jean Prokott’s writing is agile. It moves gracefully from a stark wittiness and conversational observations to unforgettable imagery evoking the true palpability of grief. You’ll find yourself pausing between pages to reflect and revel; to mourn or query; to grow and keep going.”

The Second Longest Day of the Year will be available for purchase at Garden Party Books. Negative Covid test or proof of vaccination are required to attend.

Jean Prokott has work published or forthcoming in Arts & Letters, Angel City Review, Anomaly, and Adirondack Review, among other journals; she is a recipient of an AWP Intro Journals Award, a recipient of the Joan Ramseyer Poetry Award.

Want to learn more about off-campus research opportunities in STEM? The National Science Foundation supports programs called Research Experiences for Undergraduates or REUs.

On Friday, November 12, from 4:00 – 5:30 PM, Dixie Shafer of URGO will lead a workshop on how to search for and apply to paid off-campus Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) programs in STEM fields.

This will be a virtual event designed to help students learn more about how to search for and apply to summer research opportunities nationally as well as locally.

Biomedical Engineering Summer Research Program

The Biomedical Engineering Department and Center for Biomedical Informatics at Wake Forest School of Medicine will offer several summer research opportunities in 2022 focusing on Imaging and Mechanics-based Projects on Accidental Cases of Trauma (IMPACT) and other biomedical engineering and informatics topics. Students selected for this Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program will receive a stipend and on-campus housing. Exciting biomedical engineering projects are offered on topics including:

Injury prediction model development
Military, sports and spaceflight safety
Osteoporosis prevention
Biomechanical characterization of injury mechanisms

Augsburg isn’t able to host a flu shot event due to staffing shortages this year, but the People’s Center Clinic on the corner of Riverside and 20th avenues is providing flu vaccinations during its open hours and welcomes members of the Augsburg community to make an appointment to get their shot.
