Hybrid All Hands Meeting on May 6

The final All Hands Meeting of the 2020-21 year will be Thursday, May 6 at 9 a.m. The meeting will be held as a hybrid event, both in Hoversten Chapel and via Zoom. While we normally hold a longer, strategy-focused All-Hands Planning Summit at the end of the year, we have decided to move our summit conversation to the fall and use this opportunity to report on the significant accomplishments of the 2020-21 academic year.

CTL’s annual “Three Days in May” professional development event will take place over Zoom Tuesday, May 11 through Thursday, May 13, 2021, and we are officially accepting proposals for seminars, workshops, panels, etc. You do not need to present a topic in order to propose it, but it is much more likely to get scheduled if you provide a coordinator for the session.

Sessions may be 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes long and should somehow address one of the categories listed below OR provide other essential information for teaching faculty and staff (e.g. tenure portfolio workshops). To submit a proposal, click on the short Google form here which will ask for a temporary title, topic category(ies), coordinator name (if any), and length of session.

The theme for “3 Days” this year is “Closing the Loop on the Augsburg Student Survey”, and all sessions will be listed under at least one of six categories: (1) Student Mental and Physical Health, (2) Planning and Study Skills, (3) Peer Support and Connection, (4) Student Interaction with Faculty, (5) Clear and Flexible Teaching Practices, and (5) Student Professional and Career Development.

Join Model UN in Chicago this Fall

Apply now to take the fall semester Model United Nations course, POL 368. Members of this class will participate in the American Model United Nations from November 20-23, 2021, held in Chicago, IL.

In this course, you will gain in-depth understanding of the United Nations and international diplomacy through the process of preparation for attending the conference in November. Students research a country and set of issues for the committee on which they will serve.

The fall 2021 Augsburg delegation will be representing the countries of Guatemala, Namibia and Sweden. In addition, a focus of the class will also be the study of indigenous peoples and their connection to the United Nations, with emphasis on Canadian First Nations.

The conference provides experiential learning that enables you to develop a better understanding of the inner workings of the UN, and a forum to hone skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, compromise, public speaking, writing, and research. This opportunity is a great chance to put your learning into practice!

Priority Application deadline is May 1, 2021 to apply on the Study Abroad/Away site.

Prerequisite: students must complete the POL 160 course before Fall 2021, or have relevant equivalent academic experience.

Mentors in STEM Peer Mentoring can play a pivotal role in establishing the success of beginning STEM students. If you’re a rising Junior or Senior in a STEM major, enjoy being a leader and/or have lots of advice & resources to share — this is for you!! (Transfer students are also welcome!)

The LEAD (Leaders for Equity, Action & Democracy) Fellows Program focuses on student leadership development through off-campus, community-strengthening work in which they are working to address social issues such as education inequity, food insecurity, housing instability, etc. Students attend regular cohort meetings to reflect together on their work, cultivate critical analysis of the issues they’re working to address, and develop leadership skills.

In addition to being an active member of the leadership cohort, students will have access to paid internships both on and off campus in position that focus on social change work.

Help Others Get Their Vaccine and Get Yours Too

Sign up to be a volunteer at a vaccine event at People’s Center (425 20th Ave S). Volunteers are needed Thursday, April 22 and Thursday, May 20. Shifts are 3.5 hours. Everyone who volunteers can either sign up to receive a vaccine or can give the opportunity to a loved one (Moderna). Controversies regarding religion and business are regularly in both the press and the courts and more Americans say that they encounter religious diversity at work than in any other sphere of their life (PRRI, 2019). However, religion is often left out of the corporate diversity conversation. Diverse identities and perspectives on a team can lead to greater outcomes or can lead to misunderstanding and conflict. It is only when diverse identities are engaged, and team members have opportunities to intentionally learn about one another, that the potential strength of workplace diversity is unlocked. Developing a company culture that proactively engages religious diversity can open doors to greater employee productivity, enhanced client satisfaction, and even new business prospects. These agencies are able to better understand the qualifications that candidates possess to help match them with an organization/position that’s a good fit for them. Jenny Hanson, Chair of the TEL subcommittee, was on-hand to introduce TEL’s proposal to become a standing committee. This proposal will be voted on by AAC at the next meeting on April 26. AAC also approved TEL’s recommendation to allow for flexibility in teaching modalities through this Summer and Fall, with a necessary modality approval process being brought for Spring 2022 (2021 Sem 2).

Mural Being Painted in Old Main Tunnels

Keep your eyes peeled for wet paint. A graphic design class, Graphic Systems, is helping transform the tunnels under Old Main into an aesthetic and thought-provoking space. We brought this to the Campus Design Committee of the University Council, and they approved the project because of the moment we’re in where so many students, faculty, and staff miss campus, and the fact this particular class has the opportunity to do something special to welcome folks back, whenever they might return. Please be careful and avoid touching the wet paint as we transform this space into something the whole community can enjoy. Updates about the project will be available in the Facilities blog shared via A-mail usually on Tuesdays.

The LEAD (Leaders for Equity, Action & Democracy) Fellows Program focuses on student leadership development through off-campus, community-strengthening work in which they are working to address social issues such as education inequity, food insecurity, housing instability, etc. Students attend regular cohort meetings to reflect together on their work, cultivate critical analysis of the issues they’re working to address, and develop leadership skills.

In addition to being an active member of the leadership cohort, students will have access to paid internships both on and off campus in position that focus on social change work.

Applications are Now Open for the 2021-22 AugSTEM Scholars Program

The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, AugSTEM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Fall 2021 (graduating by December ‘23)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher (scholars will be expected to raise their GPA to 3.0 during program participation)
– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Thursday, May 13 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Tuesday, May 25 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application)

Minnesota Technology Foundation Scholarship Application Now Open

The Minnesota Technology Foundation Scholarships are for Minnesota undergraduate students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. These awards range from $2,500 to $5,000 awards and can include internship opportunities at MnTech member companies.The Minnesota Technology Foundation supports diversity in this application and award process.

Eligibility requirements:
– Must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in a STEM field or in STEM teaching
– Only students with sophomore through senior academic status in the current school year may apply. Sophomore status may include students who have achieved this status through advanced placement (AP) credit or post-secondary options (PSEO)s
– Applicants must be enrolled at an accredited, Minnesota-based higher education institution.
– Scholarships will be awarded in the fall term of 2021 and presented to recipients at Minnesota Technology Association Tekne Awards in November. Students must be enrolled at time of award.

3 Days in May: Request for Proposals (Due April 16)

CTL’s annual “Three Days in May” professional development event will take place over Zoom Tuesday, May 11 through Thursday, May 13, 2021, and we are officially accepting proposals for seminars, workshops, panels, etc. You do not need to present a topic in order to propose it, but it is much more likely to get scheduled if you provide a coordinator for the session.

Sessions may be 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes long and should somehow address one of the categories listed below OR provide other essential information for teaching faculty and staff (e.g. tenure portfolio workshops). To submit a proposal, click on the short Google form here which will ask for a temporary title, topic category(ies), coordinator name (if any), and length of session.

The theme for “3 Days” this year is “Closing the Loop on the Augsburg Student Survey”, and all sessions will be listed under at least one of six categories: (1) Student Mental and Physical Health, (2) Planning and Study Skills, (3) Peer Support and Connection, (4) Student Interaction with Faculty, (5) Clear and Flexible Teaching Practices, and (5) Student Professional and Career Development.

The committee was also updated on upcoming proposals for a Minor Curricular Standards Policy, as well as a policy for Student-Designed Minors.

Jenny Hanson, Chair of the TEL subcommittee, was on-hand to introduce TEL’s proposal to become a standing committee. This proposal will be voted on by AAC at the next meeting on April 26. AAC also approved TEL’s recommendation to allow for flexibility in teaching modalities through this Summer and Fall, with a necessary modality approval process being brought for Spring 2022 (2021 Sem 2).

The editor of our “Opinions” section is responsible for curating, editing and writing articles centered on Augsburg student and community opinions and stories. A bullet-point list of this position’s duties are below.

– Curate, edit and write articles centered on Augsburg student and community opinions.

When anyone is confronted by any form of aggression, whether verbal, physical, social, or economic, it is natural to feel fear, doubt, and paralysis. This is important in assessing critical next steps if we happen to be a bystander. We must also look at our own fears and triggers as they, too, play a role in how we may react or respond to any potential conflict or confrontation.

During this webinar participants will consider some very important questions as they devise their own ways of responding to triggering situations. How does privilege impact decisions to engage in conflict and whether/how to respond? When is allyship an act of support, and when is it not? Who gets to decide? How can survivors reclaim pleasure after trauma? How can we use sex toys as tools for our healing journeys? How can we affirm pleasure as a human right for everyone—including survivors? We’ll talk about the intersection of trauma education and sex toy education, sex toy basics and safety, using sex toys as pleasure mapping tools to rediscover and reconnect with your body as a survivor, and self-care. Mary Laurel True Farewell

After more than 30 years of dedicated service to Augsburg and our surrounding communities, Mary Laurel True will be moving on. Her last day is Friday, April 16. She will bring her great skill and passion for community engagement to a new position at the Community Action Center of Northfield.

We will have a farewell gathering for Mary Laurel in May when the weather is warmer and we can be outdoors. Please watch for the date to be set soon, and in the meantime, wish her best of luck and many thanks for all that she has given Augsburg.

Augsburg celebrates the creativity and scholarship of undergraduate students with its annual Zyzzogeton festival. The festival falls at the end of each academic year and is a culmination of achievement featuring work across departments.

This year Zyzzogeton will be held virtually, with student posters available for viewing online and live Q & A sessions.

We welcome ALL of the Augsburg community—students, faculty, staff–to attend this virtual event. No prior knowledge of the featured research areas is necessary! If you aren’t able to make one of the live sessions, you’re encouraged to post questions or comments for the students on the symposium website.

According to a press release from Gov. Walz, vaccinations will begin at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds on April 14 and serve Minnesotans living in the highest Social Vulnerability Index zip codes. Augsburg’s 55454 zip code is included. The site will be by appointment only. Minnesotans living in the zip codes listed can sign up for the Vaccine Connector https://vaccineconnector.mn.gov/en-US/ to be selected for an appointment. Minnesotans can call the Minnesota Department of Health COVID-19 Public Hotline at 1-833-431-2053 for language assistance and any questions about signing up for the Connector.

3 Days in May: Request for Proposals (Due April 16)

CTL’s annual “Three Days in May” professional development event will take place over Zoom Tuesday, May 11 through Thursday, May 13, 2021, and we are officially accepting proposals for seminars, workshops, panels, etc. You do not need to present a topic in order to propose it, but it is much more likely to get scheduled if you provide a coordinator for the session.

Sessions may be 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes long and should somehow address one of the categories listed below OR provide other essential information for teaching faculty and staff (e.g. tenure portfolio workshops). To submit a proposal, click on the short Google form here which will ask for a temporary title, topic category(ies), coordinator name (if any), and length of session.

The theme for “3 Days” this year is “Closing the Loop on the Augsburg Student Survey”, and all sessions will be listed under at least one of six categories: (1) Student Mental and Physical Health, (2) Planning and Study Skills, (3) Peer Support and Connection, (4) Student Interaction with Faculty, (5) Clear and Flexible Teaching Practices, and (5) Student Professional and Career Development.

When anyone is confronted by any form of aggression, whether verbal, physical, social, or economic, it is natural to feel fear, doubt, and paralysis. This is important in assessing critical next steps if we happen to be a bystander. We must also look at our own fears and triggers as they, too, play a role in how we may react or respond to any potential conflict or confrontation.

During this webinar participants will consider some very important questions as they devise their own ways of responding to triggering situations. How does privilege impact decisions to engage in conflict and whether/how to respond? When is allyship an act of support, and when is it not? Who gets to decide? How do we deal with our own emotional responses to aggression and confrontation? How can one become an effective ally in a virtual work world and how does this differ from an in-person workplace?

Join this virtual event where graduate students from Augsburg’s Clinical Psychology PsyD program will review existing research on cultural applications and adaptations to cognitive behavioral therapy.

Graduate students will present virtual posters of their work and respond to questions on the following specific topics: CBT for American Indians with Substance Use Disorders, CBT with Arab individuals presenting with symptoms of trauma, addressing therapist microaggressions when working with transgender individuals in a CBT framework, and cultural considerations when using CBT with transgender BIPOC individuals.

Applications are Now Open for the 2021-22 AugSTEM Scholars Program

The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, AugSTEM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Fall 2021 (graduating by December ‘23)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher (scholars will be expected to raise their GPA to 3.0 during program participation)
– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Thursday, May 13 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Tuesday, May 25 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application)

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

Teaching Tip Tuesday: The Inevitability of Learning

In 1933, a speech given by John Dewey at Teachers College, Columbia University was published by the New York Times. In it, he describes what a utopian vision for education might be. He opens, “the most utopian thing about Utopia is that there are no schools at all.” Recognizing the limits of the institution of schooling, Dewey argued for learning by association, experiences together, much like apprenticeships, driving the collective education for the Utopians. Key to Dewey’s idea was what he called “the inevitability of learning” and that the utopians became utopian only when they had moved away from an acquisitive society (where they sought to acquire knowledge in order to acquire things) to an inquisitive society.

This month’s EDTalks will focus on the experiences had by our students. On April 14, Jason Lukasik will speak to the curricular theories and history that underpin experiential learning. On April 28, Joe Underhill will reflect on the evolving nature of the River Semester, and how he continually engages students in teaching “by doing and by example.” As Augsburg is committed to creating meaningful experiences with our students, these talks, and Dewey’s piece, help us to focus on the necessary move from “acquisitive” to “inquisitive.”

Sad News – Orlette Tatley

Orlette Tatley, a former Augsburg staff member, died on April 2, 2021. After many years of service in the library,Tatley retired in 1996. Prior to that she had worked in the college bookstore. She is remembered not only for her role on staff, but also for her enduring and generous support of Augsburg in numerous ways including as a dedicated volunteer with the Augsburg Associates. Service information is pending, updates will be available through Washburn-McReavy Funeral Home.

Boyd Koehler, associate professor emeritus, offered these words of remembrance:
“I worked closely with her at Augsburg University in the library for almost a decade and was struck by the impact she had on so many faculty, staff, and students. She was a genius in her ability to make the library a very welcoming atmosphere and also was a stellar role model for students. She created a lasting impression for all of us with her strong work ethic, her incredible sense of humor, and her moral convictions. She was an indelible embodiment of the college’s commitment to academic excellence and dedication to truth.”

The LEAD (Leaders for Equity, Action & Democracy) Fellows Program focuses on student leadership development through off-campus, community-strengthening work in which they are working to address social issues such as education inequity, food insecurity, housing instability, etc. Students attend regular cohort meetings to reflect together on their work, cultivate critical analysis of the issues they’re working to address, and develop leadership skills.

In addition to being an active member of the leadership cohort, students will have access to paid internships both on and off campus in position that focus on social change work.

Dining services will be offering meals after sundown for students observing Ramadan. Ramadan should begin on April 12 at sundown.

From April 12 through April 29 (the last meal plan dinner for the semester), dining services will offer a meal for students observing Ramadan from 8:45-10pm each night. At these meal times, students may take with them the food needed for breakfast prior to sunrise. Please share this information with others.
