The URGO Phase 1 Summer Research Application deadline has been extended to February 16th, it must be completed on time to be considered for Phase Two Summer Research. Crossover Registration Change for Fall 2021

For the Fall 2021 undergraduate registration period we are eliminating the crossover registration waiting period on a trial basis. Registration for AU students into Day classes and Day students into AU classes will be available as soon as a student is eligible to register. A decision about crossover registration in future semesters will be made after we see how this trial impacts Day and AU student access to courses in their home programs.

Cause of Fire Alarm Wednesday at Mortensen Hall

A fire alarm went off at 11:39 a.m. Wednesday at Mortensen Hall after Facilities had been defrosting an air filter and it caught on fire. Minneapolis Fire Department firefighters and Augsburg Department of Public Safety officers responded to the scene. They inspected the building, and confirmed by noon that the fire was out and that the smoke had cleared enough that it was safe for the students who had been escorted out of the building to return.

The editor of our “Features” section is responsible for curating, editing and writing articles that provide in-depth news stories on areas of interest to the Augsburg community. Some examples of Features content includes articles that engage community perspectives on topics relevant to Augsburg and wider Minneapolis communities, highlights specific resources on campus, and spotlights the work of local artists, leaders and organizers. Other examples include interactive games and column pieces. Features is also often a home for art pieces and poems. A bullet-point list of this position’s responsibilities are below:

-Curate, edit, and write articles that provide in depth news and human interest stories on areas of interest to the Augsburg community.
-Be active in engaging students, staff, faculty and community members in topics of their interest.
-Be knowledgable of student resources at Augsburg.
-Plan photos in coordination with Photo Editor.
-Be part of a welcoming and supporting team.

This position is paid $60 per newspaper issue (we release 10 issues every semester) and works 6 hours a week.

February EDTalk: Incorporating Intentionality, Mindfulness, and Gratitude in Teaching and Learning

Premiering Wednesday, February 17 at 3:10 pm. Tara Mader (faculty in the department of Health, Physical Education and Exercise Science) and Dan Ibarra (faculty in the Department of Art and Design) will explore the benefits and techniques of employing gratitude, mindfulness, and intentionality in the classroom.

This year, EDTalks will be pre-recorded and have a community “premiere” on Zoom hosted by CTL at 3:10 pm on days when there is a faculty meeting. These premieres will end no later than 3:30pm to allow plenty of time to log into the Faculty Zoom meeting early. After the premier, the recording will be posted on the CTL website, along with any resources (if applicable).

Fair question. Yet at the same time, preaching the love, justice, and mercy of God has never mattered more. Preaching matters because it reminds us that the challenges of the day, while urgent, are neither the only nor ultimate realities with which we live. It matters because in the proclamation of the Gospel we are reminded of our primary identity as God’s beloved children. And it matters because a central component of the Gospel is the promise that the future is in God’s hands. Come, join the conversation!

Aisha will explore ethical questions raised by the advances in science such as organ donation and stem cell research. Awareness of these ethical questions can create strong leaders in scientific and other fields while holding deep connection to their faith. Following Aisha’s presentation, two Augsburg students will offer their responses and there will be time for questions from the audience.

The NASA Space Grant scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

This competitive program awards up to 6 scholarships for Spring 2021 (totaling $8000), in the following areas:
1. Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
2. Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

Strong candidates for the grant will be students who…
– are a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, or mathematics/science education;
– can demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership within their major area; and

The Holistic Health Series will be a monthly session facilitated by CWC and the Pan-Afrikan Center. For 60 minutes, students will come together on zoom to practice a plethora of grounding activities. Covid-19 and the historical racial unrest have increased anxiety, isolation, depression, unstable housing and employment, and more. CWC and the Pan-Afrikan Center will provide culturally competent sessions that will allow people to practice mindfulness through music, poetry, movement, relationship building, and more. After each session, the facilitators will ask for feedback and suggestions to increase the participants’ quality and enjoyment of Holistic Health Series.

Khadijah grew up in the suburbs of Minneapolis as an only child. Working as a Sexuality Educator with teens, her confidence in public speaking coupled with her quick wit gave her all the fuel she needed to burst onto the comedy scene in February 2018.
Special Comedian guest Star: Ali Sultan @alisultancomedy

Ali Sultan saw his first stand up comedian when he moved to America from Yemen at the age of 15. He grew the desire to go on stage but first he needed to learn English.
Ali is the first professional Yemeni American comedian to be featured on Television when Kevin Hart hand picked him to perform on Comedy Central’s Hart of The City. In 2018 he was flown to Dubai to film a Half Hour Special for Comedy Central Arabia. He was named both Best Local Comic and artist of the year by City Pages. He represented Minnesota and won the Best in The Midwest competition at Gildas LaughFest. His album happy to be here debuted at #2 on iTunes and can be heard on iTunes and Spotify. When Ali isn’t telling jokes Ali enjoys doing a podcast with his mom, Stories With My Muslim Mom.

We are recruiting for two paid student roles this semester. We are seeking Augsburg University students to serve in these two roles:

* Nonprofit Communication Intern – we’re looking for strong writers who have an interest in refining their communication skills in a nonprofit setting.
* Spanish Resource and Curriculum Assistant – we are looking for fluent Spanish speakers with an interest in education and youth development.

Three local twin cities comedians will feed us with laughter. There is be a Q/A at the end with all three comedians.

Our host will be Khadijah Cooper @kcoopercomedy
Khadijah grew up in the suburbs of Minneapolis as an only child. Working as a Sexuality Educator with teens, her confidence in public speaking coupled with her quick wit gave her all the fuel she needed to burst on to the comedy scene in February 2018.

Special Comedian guest Star: Ali Sultan @alisultancomedy
Ali Sultan saw his first stand up comedian when he moved to America from Yemen at the age of 15. He grew the desire to go on stage but first he needed to learn English.
Ali is the first professional Yemeni American comedian to be featured on Television when Kevin Hart hand picked him to perform on Comedy Central’s Hart of The City. In 2018 he was flown to Dubai to film a Half Hour Special for Comedy Central Arabia. He was named both Best Local Comic and artist of the year by City Pages. He represented Minnesota and won the Best in The Midwest competition at Gildas LaughFest. His album happy to be here debuted at #2 on iTunes and can heard on iTunes and Spotify. When Ali isn’t telling jokes Ali enjoys doing a podcast with his mom, Stories With My Muslim Mom.

The NASA Space Grant scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

This competitive program awards up to 6 scholarships for Spring 2021 (totaling $8000), in the following areas:
1. Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
2. Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

Strong candidates for the grant will be students who…
– are a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, or mathematics/science education;

Alternative Spring Break Experience 2021

Campus Ministry invites students to participate in an Alternative Spring Break experience March 15-19, 2021, offering the students an opportunity to look deeper at justice issues in the Twin Cities and surrounding area and engage in meaningful, relationship-centered volunteer work.
The justice issues will be examined through several experiences in the Twin Cities and reflection and sharing in order for participants to process their experience communally and individually. These experiences include:
MN Council of Churches Sacred Sites Tour, exploring MN history through a Native lens by visiting sacred sites and through storytelling.
A presentation and activities by the University of MN Mapping Prejudice project, exploring housing inequity due to racial disparities.
A presentation and activities by the Lutheran Social Service of MN (LSS-MN) Advocacy team, providing practical and current information on ways to be advocates.
Activities are subject to change due to COVID-19 protocols.
For volunteer opportunities, students will partner with LSS-MN at Supported Living Homes (SLH), known as ‘group homes.’ SLH provides a family home setting to no more than 4 community members living with differing abilities.
Students will serve in small groups at several homes. Activities may include yard work, building maintenance, meal prep, and social activities alongside those who live in the home. Volunteer work will focus on the relational aspect of volunteering, rather than the actual jobs accomplished. Volunteer activities are designed to help volunteers and residents see one another as individuals rather than ‘other.’
This ASB has been approved to count as an Augsburg Experience. Please indicate on the registration form if you would like that option.
Cost: $25, including the required book & lunch each of the 5 days. Please fill out the registration form & turn in your fee to Janice Dames in the Campus Ministry office.

In these programs, you will have the opportunity to participate in a yearlong academic seminar with a cohort of your peers. You will contribute to public leadership on campus and in the wider community in the Christian tradition, through interfaith engagement, or civic life. You will also be able to earn 4 upper division semester credits in the Religion or Political Science and receive a $2,000 scholarship.

General Education Assessment: Where do we go from here? (11 am – 11:45 am)

The newly-minted set of General Education Learning Outcomes have now been mapped to every course in the general education curriculum, providing us with new information on where and how students achieve the core learning outcomes of Augsburg’s signature curriculum. During this session, we will review the learning outcomes, as well as our preliminary data on where students achieve these outcomes. As we pivot to next steps, we invite faculty/staff feedback about implementation plans, including what resources are needed to support an expanded assessment of student learning in our general education curriculum.

Institutional Student Surveys: Closing the Loop (12 pm – 1 pm)

After hearing from over a thousand students in our fall institutional surveys, faculty and staff workshopped ideas on how to better serve students in changing times. But how do we transform these ideas into action? In this session, we will review the ideas collected during the Fall student survey workshops and discuss straightforward ways to better meet student needs.

For those who want to take the work to the next level, staff and faculty will identify an area of interest and join in small group discussion and planning. Our objective is to conclude this session having created collaborative working groups built around key themes, with a call to action and supportive resources for those who want to pilot new approaches to improve student experience.

Abolition Democracy

Are you interested in abolition democracy?

If so, perhaps you would like to join a student committee that is planning an April 2021 panel event, “Abolition Democracy as our Moral Compass: A “Radical Imaginary” This event would be generously supported by Paul ’63 and LaVonne (Olson) Batalden ’63, and Stephen ’67 and Sandra Batalden.

Critical race theorist and abolition scholar Stovall (2018) invites us into “a radical imaginary” that “challenges us to think about the world as it is while committing to a process that systemically changes it” (p. 53). Students who identify as Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) in traditionally White institutions (TWIs) must navigate a covert White supremacist infrastructure (Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence, 2005) and a White milieu in higher education (for example, “White talk moves,” see Finders & Kwame-Ross, 2020). This proposed panel seeks to imagine higher education in the context of abolition democracy (DuBois, 1998; Davis, 2005).

This panel discussion will feature Professor David Stovall and additional student selected panelists. The event will be shaped and organized with Augsburg students under the guidance of the Batalden Scholar in Applied Ethics, Prof. Bibiana Koh. Students who serve on the committee will receive some kind of recognition for their time.

The Critical Race & Ethnic Studies Scholarship will be awarded to a student who demonstrates financial need with preference given to students engaged in coursework or majoring in Critical Race and Ethnicity Studies as the vision for this new department is realized.

Critical Race & Ethnic Studies
The department has been in construction since 1968 and was supported by President Pribbenow on June 2020, in the wake of George Floyd’s murder by the Minneapolis police department.

The desire in the creation of the CRES Department will Include

1) a major and minor in CRES with concentrations in Africana Studies; Latine/x Studies; and Asian-American Studies
2) 5 tenure faculty total, with 3 immediate tenure-track faculty in the Fall 2021 and two more in the following years; and
3) actively center the interdisciplinary scholarship rooted in the practices, philosophies, and methods of ethnic studies.

This scholarship was created by a generous donor and in collaboration with a group of students and PASU (Pan-Afrikan Student Union) raising money to create more accessible scholarships.

The Office of Academic Affairs and the Faculty Development Committee invite your nominations for the annual Augsburg University Distinguished Contributions Awards. Augsburg annually recognizes individuals or groups that have made exemplary contributions to creating an engaging academic learning environment through awards for teaching, scholarship, and service. All faculty or full-time staff who have been employed at the university for at least three years are eligible for the awards.

Nominations are due Monday, March 1.

Distinguished Contribution in Teaching – Up to two awards may be given in this category, one for full-time faculty and one for adjunct faculty (2 courses per term or less).

The editor of our “Features” section is responsible for curating, editing and writing articles that provide in-depth news stories on areas of interest to the Augsburg community. Some examples of Features content includes articles that engage community perspectives on topics relevant to Augsburg and wider Minneapolis communities, highlights specific resources on campus, and spotlights the work of local artists, leaders and organizers. Other examples include interactive games and column pieces. Features is also often a home for art pieces and poems. A bullet-point list of this position’s responsibilities are below:

-Curate, edit, and write articles that provide in depth news and human interest stories on areas of interest to the Augsburg community.
-Be active in engaging students, staff, faculty and community members in topics of their interest.
-Be knowledgable of student resources at Augsburg.

General Education Assessment: Where do we go from here? (11 am – 11:45 am)

The newly-minted set of General Education Learning Outcomes have now been mapped to every course in the general education curriculum, providing us with new information on where and how students achieve the core learning outcomes of Augsburg’s signature curriculum. During this session, we will review the learning outcomes, as well as our preliminary data on where students achieve these outcomes. As we pivot to next steps, we invite faculty/staff feedback about implementation plans, including what resources are needed to support an expanded assessment of student learning in our general education curriculum.

Institutional Student Surveys: Closing the Loop (12 pm – 1 pm)

After hearing from over a thousand students in our fall institutional surveys, faculty and staff workshopped ideas on how to better serve students in changing times. But how do we transform these ideas into action? In this session, we will review the ideas collected during the Fall student survey workshops and discuss straightforward ways to better meet student needs.

For those who want to take the work to the next level, staff and faculty will identify an area of interest and join in small group discussion and planning. Our objective is to conclude this session having created collaborative working groups built around key themes, with a call to action and supportive resources for those who want to pilot new approaches to improve student experience.

Auggie Wins Prestigious PPIA Award

URGO is pleased to announce that Estefani Guiracocha ’22 has been selected for the competitive Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute for 2020. She will attend the institute held this summer at the University of Minnesota Humphrey School of Public Affairs, where she will participate in challenging policy coursework, leadership development training and graduate school preparation over seven weeks.

Estefani is majoring in Political Science and Accounting and has been involved on campus in the Emerging Leadership Program and TRIO Summer Bridge and as a Resident Adviser. She has served the off campus community as a Phillips Community Outreach and Organizing Specialist, Marketing and Communications Intern for U.S. Bank, Capitol Pathways Intern and Bayan Staff Program Assistant.

The NASA Space Grant scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

This competitive program awards up to 6 scholarships for Spring 2021 (totaling $8000), in the following areas:
1. Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
2. Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

Strong candidates for the grant will be students who…
– are a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, or mathematics/science education;

Still Available for Spring 2021 — Batalden Ethics Research Assistant (RA) Positions

The Batalden Scholar in Applied Ethics program is pleased to announce that there is funding available to Augsburg faculty who wish to mentor undergraduate research assistants to support student or faculty research in applied ethics. Funding for this RA program is generously supported by Paul ’63 and LaVonne (Olson) Batalden ’63, and Stephen ’67 and Sandra Batalden.

Eligibility: Currently enrolled undergraduate Augsburg student with a strong interest in applied ethics research.

Stipend: Mirroring URGO, the selected undergraduate research assistants will complete 50 hours of work and receive a $500 stipend at the end of the Spring 2021 semester.

Award reporting: All students who are awarded a Batalden RA position will be required to attend a May 2021 virtual event to briefly report on the impact of their research assistantship. Faculty working with their RA are strongly encouraged to attend as well.

Applications: Faculty should submit their application using this link (also shown below); faculty applicants may request additional funds to support the undergraduate RAs work for consideration (to avoid these costs being deducted out of the RA stipend). Students should submit their letter of interest and resume directly to the faculty member they would like to work with prior to faculty completing the Google Form application. Share your suggestions for the next Batalden Convocation speaker for Spring 2022.
Each year (with the exception of last March 2020 due to the pandemic), the Batalden Program in Applied Ethics hosts a “Batalden convocation.” Historically, this has been a one-hour talk held in the chapel. Since the academic year 2018-2019, a “Batalden Visiting Scholar” approach has been taken; this allows the “Batalden Visiting Scholar” to both visit classes and with students on the same day as the convocation and, in some cases, the following day. Previous Batalden Visiting Scholars have included Professor Jin Park (Buddhist scholar), Professor Frederic Reamer (ethicist), and Professor Kwame Anthony Appiah (ethicist).

For the current Batalden Scholar in Applied Ethics (Bibiana Koh) the overarching objective of the program is to promote broad conversations in interfaith, intersectional, or interdisciplinary applied ethics that promote social justice and social change across the Augsburg University campus and the community at large. The program defines applied ethics as work that focuses on, considers, and/or addresses public and/or private moral issues. The Batalden Ethics program is generously supported by Paul ’63 and LaVonne (Olson) Batalden ’63, and Stephen ’67 and Sandra Batalden.

In hope and anticipation of a pandemic-free year, planning for the Spring 2022 convocation begins now. Teaching Tip Tuesday: Advisory Grades

Regardless of how we instructors feel about it, students want to know their grades and track their progress. In a study (Borreson Caruso and Salaway, 2007, ECAR)of how students use their classroom management systems (like Moodle), almost 30,000 students from across the U.S. self-reported that keeping track of assignment and test grades was their 3rd most common use of the technology, just behind accessing the syllabus (ranked #1) and course readings and assignments (#2). However, 93% of these same students ranked keeping track of assignment and test grades as the number one most useful feature of this technology.

At Augsburg, the Augsburg Day Student Government (ADSG) has recommended to AAC that we faculty engage in “…updating Moodle grades or informing students of their progress in the class” throughout the semester. In response to this recommendation, Augsburg is conducting an Advisory Grading Pilot this semester to ensure that this information is provided to every undergraduate student for every class at least twice a semester. Please be on the lookout for more information about this process very soon!!

Alternative Spring Break Experience 2021

Campus Ministry invites students to participate in an Alternative Spring Break experience March 15-19, 2021, offering the students an opportunity to look deeper at justice issues in the Twin Cities and surrounding area and engage in meaningful, relationship-centered volunteer work.
The justice issues will be examined through several experiences in the Twin Cities and reflection and sharing in order for participants to process their experience communally and individually. These experiences include:
MN Council of Churches Sacred Sites Tour, exploring MN history through a Native lens by visiting sacred sites and through storytelling.
A presentation and activities by the University of MN Mapping Prejudice project, exploring housing inequity due to racial disparities.
A presentation and activities by the Lutheran Social Service of MN (LSS-MN) Advocacy team, providing practical and current information on ways to be advocates.
Activities are subject to change due to COVID-19 protocols.
For volunteer opportunities, students will partner with LSS-MN at Supported Living Homes (SLH), known as ‘group homes.’ SLH provides a family home setting to no more than 4 community members living with differing abilities.
Students will serve in small groups at several homes. Activities may include yard work, building maintenance, meal prep, and social activities alongside those who live in the home. Volunteer work will focus on the relational aspect of volunteering, rather than the actual jobs accomplished. Volunteer activities are designed to help volunteers and residents see one another as individuals rather than ‘other.’
This ASB has been approved to count as an Augsburg Experience. Please indicate on the registration form if you would like that option.
Cost: $25, including the required book & lunch each of the 5 days. Please fill out the registration form & turn in your fee to Janice Dames in the Campus Ministry office.

Auggie Wins Prestigious PPIA Award

URGO is pleased to announce that Estefani Guiracocha ’22 has been selected for the competitive Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute for 2020. She will attend the institute held this summer at the University of Minnesota Humphrey School of Public Affairs, where she will participate in challenging policy coursework, leadership development training and graduate school preparation over seven weeks.

Estefani is majoring in Political Science and Accounting and has been involved on campus in the Emerging Leadership Program and TRIO Summer Bridge and as a Resident Adviser. She has served the off campus community as a Phillips Community Outreach and Organizing Specialist, Marketing and Communications Intern for U.S. Bank, Capitol Pathways Intern and Bayan Staff Program Assistant.

Augsburg Has 6 Fulbright Semi-Finalists

Six Augsburg students have been named Fulbright Semi-Finalists. Their applications will now be forwarded on to their host countries for further consideration. All students are competing as English Teaching Assistants to the following countries: 2 to South Korea, 2 to Taiwan, 1 to Laos and 1 to Mexico. It’s an honor to make it this far in the process of a competitive national award.

Thanks to faculty and staff who wrote letters of recommendation and served on Fulbright interview committees.
