Free COVID-19 Testing on Campus TODAY

Results from the BinaxNOW rapid antigen tests will be ready in approximately 15 minutes and can be displayed via the NAVICA mobile app to show proof of recent testing. Applications are Now Open for the 2022-23 PRISM Scholars Program

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Fall 2022 (graduating by December ‘24)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher (scholars will be expected to raise their GPA to 3.0 during program participation)
– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Wednesday, May 18 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Friday, May 27 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application)

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

On Thursday, March 31st, Augsburg’s Pan Afrikan Student Union will be hosting our annual Afrikan Night Event. The theme for this year is “Taste of the Diaspora”. The main event will be from 7 PM – 9 PM in the Sateren Auditorium. There will be live performances, catered food, and an African Fashion Show! Then we’ll head over to our after party from 9:30 PM – 12 AM in the East Commons of the Christensen building.

We would like to invite all students and staff to attend. This event is one you do not want to miss! And guess what? The entry is free and you can invite your friends! We hope to see you all there.

PS: There will be a drawing for a medium TELFAR bag as well as other amazing prizes, enter by attending our Afrikan Week events and at Afrikan Night! The BIPOC Community experiences unique generational trauma from racial oppression, which can lead to specific mental health needs. There can also be barriers to accessing effective care related to culture & language, disparities, stigma, immigration status, & provider competence. Come and hear from a panel of local community practitioners & educators about these needs and resources available to address them.

Congratulations to our Auggie Pride Award winner for the month of March- Karen Mulhausen, staff member in the Fine Arts department. Karen is considered a miracle worker among her coworkers. She works tirelessly behind the scenes (quite literally, in the scene shop!) creating and building sets from scratch. She would be an incredible asset in any professional theater, but then you add the educational element of doing this at Augsburg, training students properly and teaching them new skills — She’s simply a wonder! Our staff senate is excited to recognize her for all of her efforts!! Congratulations Karen!

Full-time Faculty: Apply for the 2022 Integrated Course Design (ICD) Grant Program

CTL’s annual ICD Grant program is offered to encourage faculty to develop their knowledge and skills in evidence-based, equitable course design. To that end, recipients of the grant will receive a $2000 stipend to participate in a 4-day workshop Monday May 23 through Thursday May 26, 2022 (9:00am – 12:30pm each day), optional coaching throughout the summer, and a wrap-up lunch in late August. To demonstrate application of the principles of the workshop, participants will also be asked to produce a final product that utilizes evidence-based, equitable course design (e.g. a syllabus).

Courses proposed for this grant may be new courses or courses undergoing substantial revision; preference will be given to courses being offered in the next academic year (2022-2023). Courses may be team-teaching collaborative efforts or individually-taught. Although open to full-time faculty at all stages in their career, preference will be given to early-career faculty.

The application form and samples of successful past applications are posted on the CTL Website under “Grants & Travel Funds; Annual Grants & Awards”. Applications are due Friday, April 8th at Noon.

Augsburg will host a vaccine clinic on Wednesday, March 30, for anyone who would like to receive a first, second, or booster dose of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. This event is open to all members of the Augsburg community as well as the general public ages 5 and older. The shots are free and no insurance information will be required.

CGEE presents “Developing Justice-Oriented Global Competencies Online”

CGEE’s Ann Lutterman-Aguilar and Leah Spinosa de Vega presented virtually along with colleagues from the UMN and AFS at the Forum on Education Abroad’s Annual Conference. Their presentation, “Developing Justice-Oriented Global Competencies Online at Home & In Study Abroad” addressed how online learning modules in the Global Competency Certificate can be leveraged to educate students to take action, develop mindsets to be more accepting and flexible, and to articulate the ways that they are interconnected to diverse people within the USA and around the world.

The Forum is a membership association recognized by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission as the Standards Development Organization (SDO) for the field of education abroad. The Forum provides training and resources to education abroad professionals and its Standards of Good Practice are recognized as the definitive means by which the quality of education abroad programs may be judged. The Forum’s mission is to cultivate educators who champion high quality education abroad experiences that ignite curiosity, impact lives, and contribute to a better world.

In the current global climate we need to be extra alert to phishing attacks and scams. To help with phishing awareness we’ve made a cybersecurity training course available to students in moodle (it will be on the main course dashboard). I invite students to go through this short course and take the quiz at the end.

Everyone who has a login to the Augsburg network has a role to play to keep our digital campus secure. Phishers are not always interested in you or your information. They’re often interested in using your login and email account to phish other people at Augsburg who have access to valuable personal information.

Auggie Basics Housing – Application Open for Summer 2022 and 2022-2023 Academic Year

Augsburg University is accepting applications for Auggie Basics Housing for summer 2022 and the 2022-23 academic year.

DEADLINE:
Monday, April 4, 2022 at 5pm

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
Auggie Basics Housing is designed to address the needs of students who are experiencing housing instability. The purpose of the program is to provide a bridge for students whose housing is not stable as they seek to identify a permanent solution.

Students accepted into Auggie Basics Housing will live on campus without cost to the student. Regardless of when students enter the program, the housing commitment will cover the full academic year if needed. If the student secures permanent housing elsewhere, they will be released from the program and the spot will be offered to another student.

MEAL PLANS:
Students are not required to have a meal plan if they are selected for Auggie Basics Housing, including those placed into buildings that require one.

ELIGIBILITY FOR PROGRAM:
To be eligible for Auggie Basics Housing, students must be returning students and not receiving other housing aid from the University. Incoming first-year and transfer students are not eligible to apply.

Students may apply for housing either for the summer term and/or for the academic year. Students must reapply each academic year, and may be part of the program for up to two academic years. Being chosen for Auggie Basics Housing one year does not guarantee participation in future years.

Blessing will be studying international business/MIS this fall semester at Augsburg exchange university partner, American College of Greece. Odalys will be at the Augsburg global study center in Mexico this summer, studying Spanish and completing a medical observership.

Pfizer and Moderna Shots Available 3/30—Open to the Public

Augsburg will host a vaccine clinic on Wednesday, March 30, for anyone who would like to receive a first, second, or booster dose of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. This event is open to all members of the Augsburg community as well as the general public ages 5 and older. The shots are free and no insurance information will be required.

Summer Course: Writing for Television – Apply Now

Do you love watching television and have ever wondered how the creators wrote their pilot for that hit TV show you love to watch? Or, are you a writer in a different medium and have always wanted to try your hand at writing for television?

Grow your writing skills this summer with the course PWC 320 “Writing for Television”. This intensive course will be modeled on a professional writer’s room and as such all students will be required to actively participate. Students will be expected to participate in the development and breaking of story while learning to pitch ideas, create outlines, and reading and providing feedback on your colleagues’ work. Each of these steps will be instrumental in aiding you with creating your own pilot!

This course is taught through Augsburg University’s partnership with the nationally acclaimed Playwrights’ Center.

WRITING FOR TELEVISION: Writing the Television Pilot, PWC 320

DATES: June 4 – July 30

Augsburg University is accepting applications for Auggie Basics Housing for summer 2022 and the 2022-23 academic year.

DEADLINE:
Monday, April 4, 2022 at 5pm

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
Auggie Basics Housing is designed to address the needs of students who are experiencing housing instability. The purpose of the program is to provide a bridge for students whose housing is not stable as they seek to identify a permanent solution.

Students accepted into Auggie Basics Housing will live on campus without cost to the student. Regardless of when students enter the program, the housing commitment will cover the full academic year if needed. If the student secures permanent housing elsewhere, they will be released from the program and the spot will be offered to another student.

MEAL PLANS:
Students are not required to have a meal plan if they are selected for Auggie Basics Housing, including those placed into buildings that require one.

ELIGIBILITY FOR PROGRAM:
To be eligible for Auggie Basics Housing, students must be returning students and not receiving other housing aid from the University. Incoming first-year and transfer students are not eligible to apply.

Students may apply for housing either for the summer term and/or for the academic year. Students must reapply each academic year, and may be part of the program for up to two academic years. Being chosen for Auggie Basics Housing one year does not guarantee participation in future years.

Full-time Faculty: Apply for the 2022 Integrated Course Design (ICD) Grant Program

CTL’s annual ICD Grant program is offered to encourage faculty to develop their knowledge and skills in evidence-based, equitable course design. To that end, recipients of the grant will receive a $2000 stipend to participate in a 4-day workshop Monday May 23 through Thursday May 26, 2022 (9:00am – 12:30pm each day), optional coaching throughout the summer, and a wrap-up lunch in late August. To demonstrate application of the principles of the workshop, participants will also be asked to produce a final product that utilizes evidence-based, equitable course design (e.g. a syllabus).

Courses proposed for this grant may be new courses or courses undergoing substantial revision; preference will be given to courses being offered in the next academic year (2022-2023). Courses may be team-teaching collaborative efforts or individually-taught. Although open to full-time faculty at all stages in their career, preference will be given to early-career faculty.

The application form and samples of successful past applications are posted on the CTL Website under “Grants & Travel Funds; Annual Grants & Awards”. Applications are due Friday, April 8th at Noon.

CGEE’s Ann Lutterman-Aguilar and Leah Spinosa de Vega presented virtually along with colleagues from the UMN and AFS at the Forum on Education Abroad’s Annual Conference. Their presentation, “Developing Justice-Oriented Global Competencies Online at Home & In Study Abroad” addressed how online learning modules in the Global Competency Certificate can be leveraged to educate students to take action, develop mindsets to be more accepting and flexible, and to articulate the ways that they are interconnected to diverse people within the USA and around the world.

The Forum is a membership association recognized by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission as the Standards Development Organization (SDO) for the field of education abroad. The Forum provides training and resources to education abroad professionals and its Standards of Good Practice are recognized as the definitive means by which the quality of education abroad programs may be judged. The Forum’s mission is to cultivate educators who champion high quality education abroad experiences that ignite curiosity, impact lives, and contribute to a better world.

The East African community in the Twin Cities is experiencing a crisis of opioid addiction touching the lives of youth, young adults, and their families in our community. Two community leaders will share their perspectives and how they have responded to the crisis.

Mimi Sahlu – Mimi Sahlu is a small business owner. She is a community leader who helps others find resources. She is an activist and voice for East African women.

Abdirahman Mukhtar – Abdirahman Mukhtar worked with the Confederation of Somali Communities in Minnesota, as a youth diversion coordinator and as the youth program manager at the Brian Coyle Center of Pillsbury United Communities, a hub for Somali immigrants. He strives to make a human connection with youth who are homeless, often alienated from their own community. He is the Founder and Executive Director of Daryeel Youth. DARYEEL (which means “care” in Somali) is a volunteer-based Street Outreach effort to support East African youth.

Looking for Summer Work? Be a Summer Camp Staff Member for the Minnesota Urban Debate League

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is seeking a number of camp staff positions for our middle and high school camps. Interviews will take place early May. All staff positions will require a background check and training.

MN Debate and Advocacy Workshop (MDAW) is a day camp in 2022; staff would need to be local to Twin Cities, MN.

All staff (and students participating in the in-person camp) must either be fully vaccinated or apply for a health exemption through Augsburg University. Additional COVID-19 protocols (i.e. mask wearing) will be determined closer to camp.

These are the two positions for which we are hiring:

* Middle School Assistant – (Shift options: either 12pm – 3pm or 12pm -6pm.) MS Assistants provide support, supervision, and fun during lunch (12-1pm), assist with small groups in the afternoons, and some will provide supervision and lead games during after camp care. Middle school assistants will be paid $15/hr and can be current high school students (HS graduates and college students are welcome too!) with at least 1 year of speech or debate experience.

* High School Lab Leader – Lab Leaders work with camp faculty instructors to help teach debate labs. This includes: speaking drills, research skill building, judging debate rounds and providing constructive criticism, and helping to ensure students have a positive learning environment. Lab leaders will receive weekly stipends of $500-$750. Lab leaders must have graduated from high school and 1 year of coaching experience is preferred.

Representatives from Lutheran Volunteer Corps (LVC) will be on campus today from 10:30-12:30 in the lobby of the Christensen Center. They are hiring soon to be grads for a number of positions

LVC places volunteers 21+ in full-time service positions at social-justice non-profits for a year. Volunteers explore living simply and sustainably in intentional community while serving the cause of peace with justice. LVC provides a foundational learning experience on racism, oppression, and privilege, how these intersect with social justice, and the role of spirituality in inspiring and sustaining leadership. Year-Volunteers live together in furnished, utilities paid housing. LVC’s positions change annually and may include: Education, Environment, Food Justice, Gender Equality, Health Care, Housing, Immigration/Refugees, Legal Aid, LGBTQ Equality, Supporting people with Disabilities, Youth Engagement, etc. LVC is on a Journey to an Inclusive Community and welcomes and encourages the participation of People of Color and people of all gender identities and sexual orientations.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
Auggie Basics Housing is designed to address the needs of students who are experiencing housing instability. The purpose of the program is to provide a bridge for students whose housing is not stable as they seek to identify a permanent solution.

Students accepted into Auggie Basics Housing will live on campus without cost to the student. Regardless of when students enter the program, the housing commitment will cover the full academic year if needed. If the student secures permanent housing elsewhere, they will be released from the program and the spot will be offered to another student.

MEAL PLANS:
Students are not required to have a meal plan if they are selected for Auggie Basics Housing, including those placed into buildings that require one.

ELIGIBILITY FOR PROGRAM:
To be eligible for Auggie Basics Housing, students must be returning students and not receiving other housing aid from the University. Incoming first-year and transfer students are not eligible to apply.

Students may apply for housing either for the summer term and/or for the academic year. Students must reapply each academic year, and may be part of the program for up to two academic years. Being chosen for Auggie Basics Housing one year does not guarantee participation in future years.

Free COVID-19 Vaccines Next Week for Ages 5+

Augsburg will host a vaccine clinic on Wednesday, March 30, for anyone who would like to receive a first, second, or booster dose of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. This event is open to all members of the Augsburg community as well as the general public ages 5 and older. The shots are free and no insurance information will be required.

Summer Course: Writing for Television – Apply Now

Do you love watching television and have ever wondered how the creators wrote their pilot for that hit TV show you love to watch? Or, are you a writer in a different medium and have always wanted to try your hand at writing for television?

Grow your writing skills this summer with the course PWC 320 “Writing for Television”. This intensive course will be modeled on a professional writer’s room and as such all students will be required to actively participate. Students will be expected to participate in the development and breaking of story while learning to pitch ideas, create outlines, and reading and providing feedback on your colleagues’ work. Each of these steps will be instrumental in aiding you with creating your own pilot!

WRITING FOR TELEVISION: Writing the Television Pilot, PWC 320

DATES: June 4 – July 30

The East African community in the Twin Cities is experiencing a crisis of opioid addiction touching the lives of youth, young adults, and their families in our community. Two community leaders will share their perspectives and how they have responded to the crisis.

Mimi Sahlu – Mimi Sahlu is a small business owner. She is a community leader who helps others find resources. She is an activist and voice for East African women.

Abdirahman Mukhtar – Abdirahman Mukhtar worked with the Confederation of Somali Communities in Minnesota, as a youth diversion coordinator and as the youth program manager at the Brian Coyle Center of Pillsbury United Communities, a hub for Somali immigrants. He strives to make a human connection with youth who are homeless, often alienated from their own community. He is the Founder and Executive Director of Daryeel Youth. DARYEEL (which means “care” in Somali) is a volunteer-based Street Outreach effort to support East African youth.

Full-time Faculty: Apply for the 2022 Integrated Course Design (ICD) Grant Program

CTL’s annual ICD Grant program is offered to encourage faculty to develop their knowledge and skills in evidence-based, equitable course design. To that end, recipients of the grant will receive a $2000 stipend to participate in a 4-day workshop Monday May 23 through Thursday May 26, 2022 (9:00am – 12:30pm each day), optional coaching throughout the summer, and a wrap-up lunch in late August. To demonstrate application of the principles of the workshop, participants will also be asked to produce a final product that utilizes evidence-based, equitable course design (e.g. a syllabus).

Courses proposed for this grant may be new courses or courses undergoing substantial revision; preference will be given to courses being offered in the next academic year (2022-2023). Courses may be team-teaching collaborative efforts or individually-taught. Although open to full-time faculty at all stages in their career, preference will be given to early-career faculty.

The application form and samples of successful past applications are posted on the CTL Website under “Grants & Travel Funds; Annual Grants & Awards”. Applications are due Friday, April 8th at Noon.

The BIPOC Community experiences unique generational trauma from racial oppression, which can lead to specific mental health needs.
