The pandemic CoVid-19 health crisis has disrupted and upended the way we work. People in all corners of the globe long for human connection but are charged with quickly navigating a digital, distance work environment. Social protests centering around racism and the unjust deaths of African Americans at the hands of the police have pulled the cover off overwhelming disparities in healthcare, economics, education, police brutality and more. Interpersonal tensions are roused, and there is a vocal demand for systems change to promote a more equitable society across the US and the world. What will it take to start a workplace revolution that moves us from talk to action?

Noticing More Gmail “this message was not spam” Grey Boxes?

We’ve been seeing more notifications in Gmail that a “message was not sent to Spam based on your organization’s settings.”

This is likely due to either the overall Gmail spam filter or your personal spam filter becoming more aggressive based on what its learning.

We have configured Augsburg’s Gmail to not flag messages between Augsburg people as spam. So Gmail thinks the message may look like spam but we’ve told Gmail that email between Auggies is not spam.

The spam ecosystem is constantly changing and the Gmail spam filter is constantly learning as spam changes. These changes are normal and we always monitoring for ways we can make the email experience better.

What to do After a Negative COVID-19 Test

According to the CDC, if you receive a negative result from a COVID-19 test result, you should continue to take precautions against COVID-19, including washing your hands often, keeping 6 feet of distance between yourself and those you do not live with, and wearing a mask in public.

If you were in close contact with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19, you need to stay home for 14 days after your last contact with that person, even if your test result is negative, the Minnesota Department of Health states. This is to avoid exposing others if your test result was a false negative. If you develop symptoms after your negative test result, you will need to get tested again.

State Health Officials Urge Limiting Thanksgiving Plans

Yesterday, Minnesota Governor Walz and Minnesota Heath Department officials announced new recommendations for reducing the risk of further COVID-19 spread over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Free COVID-19 Testing TOMORROW; Students get a Chance to Win AirPods

You can still get a free COVID-19 test before Thanksgiving: Wednesday, November 18 from noon – 6 p.m. | Hoversten Chapel, Augsburg University

Students who attend, present their student ID, and get tested will be entered in an AirPods giveaway. Faculty, staff, family members, and neighbors are invited as well.

The state of Minnesota is sponsoring this pre-Thanksgiving testing at Augsburg University. This is a free saliva test. Results take a few days to arrive. To ensure an accurate test, do not eat, drink, smoke, or chew gum 30 minutes prior to testing. No insurance needed but, if you have it, bring your insurance card. This testing event is open to everyone, symptoms or no symptoms. Off-campus students also are eligible for the AirPods giveaway.

Sign up for the Minneapolis Moment Theatre Project

The Minneapolis Moment is a one-minute play project attempting to continue dialogue rooted in the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the resulting uprisings in a time of pandemic and divisive federal elections. We’ll borrow the model of the Every 28 Hours Plays to create, select, and perform one-minute plays over Zoom or other video media to share with the Augsburg and Minneapolis communities.

The Minneapolis Moment will engage student, staff, and faculty in order to perform selected one-minute plays from the Every 28 Hours Plays and to write and perform new one-minute plays based on experiences since the murder of George Floyd. The goal is to facilitate critical dialogue and reflection by providing multiple viewpoints and multiple experiences.

The design of the project allows participants to start working in December 2020 and continue into the spring semester of 2021 with three or four performances building on each other and able to be broadcast virtually to be in alignment with essential health measures to protect against the pandemic. The idea is to have three or four performances with several one-minute plays and then ultimately to collect and edit them into one larger video. Participants can be involved in only one writing and performance cycle or in them all—it will be up to them. All Augsburg students, staff, and faculty will be welcome to participate.

Do You Believe in Neuromyths? The term “neuromyth” refers to a belief about
teaching and learning that is based on a misunderstanding of how the brain works and is not true. Belief in neuromyths is prevalent in the general public (including
undergraduate students), but what about educators? Do we know better?

Inspired by the “Dead Ideas in Teaching and Learning” podcast from The Columbia
University Center for Teaching and Learning (based on an original paper by and
including an episode featuring Augsburg’s Diane Pike), Jennifer Bankers-Fulbright will present a brief overview of neuromyths common among educators at higher education institutions.

Premiering Wednesday at 3:10 pm.

This year, EDTalks will be pre-recorded and have a community “premiere” on Zoom hosted by CTL at 3:10pm on days when there is a faculty meeting. These premieres will end no later than 3:30pm to allow plenty of time to log into the Faculty Zoom meeting early. After the premier, the recording will be posted on the CTL website, along with any resources (if applicable).

Mayra Medina Macias ’14 comes to Augsburg from The College Place-Minnesota. She was born in Aguascalientes, Mexico and has a passion for working with diverse, low-income, first-generation, and immigrant students. Mayra has devoted her professional career in roles centered on equity, inclusion, and access, and has five years of experience helping students pursue higher education. Mayra graduated from Augsburg University in 2014 with a degree in communication studies, film production, and studio art. She also holds a Masters in Organizational Leadership from the University of Northwestern–St. Paul. In her free time, Mayra enjoys spending time with her family, making art, and keeping her eight-year-old puggle busy.

Mayra’s start date is Monday November 30, 2020!

Do you have concerns about the United States after the deaths of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Freddie Gray, Botham Jean, and more?

Make your voice heard! Join the Minneapolis Moment!

The Minneapolis Moment is a one-minute play project attempting to continue dialogue rooted in the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the resulting uprisings in a time of pandemic and divisive federal elections. We’ll borrow the model of the Every 28 Hours Plays to create, select, and perform one-minute plays over Zoom or other video media to share with the Augsburg and Minneapolis communities.

The Minneapolis Moment will engage student, staff, and faculty in order to perform selected one-minute plays from the Every 28 Hours Plays and to write and perform new one-minute plays based on experiences since the murder of George Floyd. The goal is to facilitate critical dialogue and reflection by providing multiple viewpoints and multiple experiences.

The design of the project allows participants to start working in December 2020 and continue into the spring semester of 2021 with three or four performances building on each other and able to be broadcast virtually to be in alignment with essential health measures to protect against the pandemic. The idea is to have three or four performances with several one-minute plays and then ultimately to collect and edit them into one larger video. Participants can be involved in only one writing and performance cycle or in them all—it will be up to them. All Augsburg students, staff, and faculty will be welcome to participate.

Free COVID-19 Testing on Wednesday; Students get a Chance to Win AirPods

You can still get a free COVID-19 test before Thanksgiving: Wednesday, November 18 from noon – 6 p.m. | Hoversten Chapel, Augsburg University

Students who attend, present their student ID, and get tested will be entered in an AirPods giveaway. Faculty, staff, family members, and neighbors are invited as well.

The state of Minnesota is sponsoring this pre-Thanksgiving testing at Augsburg University. This is a free saliva test. Results take a few days to arrive. To ensure an accurate test, do not eat, drink, smoke, or chew gum 30 minutes prior to testing. No insurance needed but, if you have it, bring your insurance card. This testing event is open to everyone, symptoms or no symptoms. Off-campus students also are eligible for the AirPods giveaway.

A broader target population is all students and faculty at Augsburg University.”

RLN 409-B Study Abroad Topics: Faith, Vocation, & Social Change – A Virtual Immersion
RLN 480-A Vocation and the Christian Faith (Also meets the Keystone requirement for some majors!)

These courses will meet in Spring 2021: face-to-face on Tuesdays and on Zoom on Thursdays. You’ll interact directly with speakers from El Salvador and Guatemala. The Center for Teaching and Learning is seeking nominations for three CTL Fellows positions. Along with the CTL Director and the Faculty Development Committee, CTL Fellows play an active role in identifying, planning, and providing professional development opportunities focused on teaching and learning at Augsburg University. To support this work, CTL Fellows have access to dedicated professional development funds to further their own expertise in teaching and learning pedagogy and share that expertise with the Augsburg community.

CTL Fellows positions are open to all teaching faculty, including adjunct faculty. Applicants should have a strong interest in pedagogy, equity and inclusion, and professional development, but need not be experts in any of these areas. Terms are for 1.5 to 2 years, and new CTL Fellows will begin in January 2021. All meetings of the CTL Fellows will occur remotely via Zoom through May 2021.

The nomination process is simple! To nominate yourself (encouraged), please submit your name and a brief statement of why you would like to be a CTL Fellow to the e-mail address below. HealthPartners Cost-Sharing Waiver due to COVID-19 Extended through March 31, 2021

Augsburg employees enrolled in either the Health Partners Open Access or Achieve Network medical plans will continue to have their cost-share waived for the treatment of COVID-19 – including copays, coinsurance and deductibles – when getting care from an in-network provider, effective through March 31, 2021.

The following information from HealthPartners was distributed to employers yesterday:

This cost-sharing waiver is for all treatments for COVID-19, both outpatient and inpatient. If someone is hospitalized for treatment of COVID-19, the member’s cost-sharing for that treatment will be waived. Any incidentals, including pharmacy and testing, associated with an inpatient stay are covered under the hospitalization stay. There are currently no outpatient prescription treatments for COVID-19, so waiving cost share does not apply. Medical policies for any new or investigational treatments will apply.

This policy will remain in effect through March 31, 2021. If a member is inpatient on March 31, 2021, we will continue coverage until they are discharged.

The Minneapolis Moment is a one-minute play project attempting to continue dialogue rooted in the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the resulting uprisings in a time of pandemic and divisive federal elections. We’ll borrow the model of the Every 28 Hours Plays to create, select, and perform one-minute plays over Zoom or other video media to share with the Augsburg and Minneapolis communities.

The Minneapolis Moment will engage student, staff, and faculty in order to perform selected one-minute plays from the Every 28 Hours Plays and to write and perform new one-minute plays based on experiences since the murder of George Floyd. The goal is to facilitate critical dialogue and reflection by providing multiple viewpoints and multiple experiences.

The design of the project allows participants to start working in December 2020 and continue into the spring semester of 2021 with three or four performances building on each other and able to be broadcast virtually to be in alignment with essential health measures to protect against the pandemic. The idea is to have three or four performances with several one-minute plays and then ultimately to collect and edit them into one larger video. Participants can be involved in only one writing and performance cycle or in them all—it will be up to them. All Augsburg students, staff, and faculty will be welcome to participate.

AAC Approves Grading Option Change Deadline

At the November 9 meeting of the Academic Affairs Committee, a policy was approved that will permanently adjust the grading option change deadline to one week after final grades are due in the undergraduate program. The deadline to withdraw from an individual class will not change. The maximum P/LP/N credits will not change. An individual academic department’s P/LP/N policy will not change.

What to do After a Negative COVID-19 test

According to the CDC, if you receive a negative result from a COVID-19 test result, you should continue to take precautions against COVID-19, including washing your hands often, keeping 6 feet of distance between yourself and those you do not live with, and wearing a mask in public.

If you were in close contact with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19, you need to stay home for 14 days after your last contact with that person, even if your test result is negative, the Minnesota Department of Health states. This is to avoid exposing others if your test result was a false negative. If you develop symptoms after your negative test result, you will need to get tested again.

The Center for Teaching and Learning is seeking nominations for three CTL Fellows positions. Along with the CTL Director and the Faculty Development Committee, CTL Fellows play an active role in identifying, planning, and providing professional development opportunities focused on teaching and learning at Augsburg University. To support this work, CTL Fellows have access to dedicated professional development funds to further their own expertise in teaching and learning pedagogy and share that expertise with the Augsburg community.

CTL Fellows positions are open to all teaching faculty, including adjunct faculty. Applicants should have a strong interest in pedagogy, equity and inclusion, and professional development, but need not be experts in any of these areas. Terms are for 1.5 to 2 years, and new CTL Fellows will begin in January 2021. All meetings of the CTL Fellows will occur remotely via Zoom through May 2021.

The nomination process is simple! To nominate yourself (encouraged), please submit your name and a brief statement of why you would like to be a CTL Fellow to the e-mail address below. Augsburg recently expanded our wellness and mental health services to give the Augsburg community access to a free service called TAO. The TAO app includes over 150 brief, effective educational sessions that include videos and interactive worksheets, that can be accessed 24/7 on your computer or smartphone. Two of the units focus on skills for coping with depression: “Leave Your Blues Behind” and “Improving Your Mood”.

Google Shared Drives – Move entire folders, manage folder level permissions

Google has enabled the ability to move entire folders from your personal Google Drive to a shared Google Drive and manage folder level permissions on shared drives. Up until recently files had to be transferred individually between drives, making for a very arduous process. Now entire folders, including folders containing nested folders or Google-type documents can be transferred.

Departments are encouraged to use Google shared drives for storing files because they are not tied to one singular owner, simplifying employee departures. For more information please contact your LFC.

TODAY Free Testing for COVID-19; Students Get a Chance to Win AirPods

There are two free state-sponsored opportunities to get tested for COVID-19 at Augsburg. Students who attend, present their student ID, and get tested will be entered in an AirPods giveaway. Faculty, staff, family members, and neighbors are invited as well.

November 11 at 10:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and November 18 from noon – 6 p.m. | Hoversten Chapel, Augsburg University

The state of Minnesota is sponsoring a pre-Thanksgiving testing at Augsburg University. This is a free saliva test. Results take a few days to arrive. To ensure an accurate test, do not eat, drink, smoke, or chew gum 30 minutes prior to testing. No insurance needed but, if you have it, bring your insurance card. This testing event is open to everyone, symptoms or no symptoms. Off-campus students also are eligible for the AirPods giveaway.

About Negative COVID-19 Test Results:

According to the CDC, if you receive a negative result from a COVID-19 test result, that means that you probably were not infected at the time the sample was collected. You should continue to take precautions against COVID-19, including washing your hands often, keeping 6 feet of distance between yourself and those you do not live with, and wearing a mask in public.

In addition, if you were in close contact with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19, you need to stay home for 14 days after your last contact with that person, even if your test result is negative, the Minnesota Department of Health states. This is to avoid exposing others if your test result was a false negative. If you develop symptoms after your negative test result, you will need to get tested again.

URGO Academic-Year Research Application Available

Each year URGO offers $1,325 research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. These grants require 100 hours of research over the course of the academic year and are a great way to ease into research or to continue work on an existing project.

Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals in the fall. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly and will begin reviewing proposals September 14th.

The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program where undergraduate students are funded to conduct research or creative activities under the guidance of a faculty mentor they choose.
