On December 12th at 6:30pm, we will be hosting an event with a goal of exploring the stories of the three Abrahamic religions’ Prophets. The event will be held at Augsburg University in Old Main, room 105. This event is one in a series of monthly events over the course of the year that aims to facilitate interfaith dialogue around a variety of topics. The purpose of this event is to explore the intersections of the prophets stories among different faith traditions. We would love to invite you as a listener and participant. Research support for faculty through the URGO Summer Research Program

The URGO Summer Research Program is designed to enhance undergraduate student learning and support faculty research and creative activity here on campus. Faculty are the driving force behind the research program, and we want it to be as beneficial to you as possible.
While summer is the perfect time to push research projects ahead, we know all too well how quickly the time goes. We have research grants for 400, 200, and 100 student research hours that are designed to provide you with the optimal amount of student research support needed for your project. The 100-hour research assistantship is a particularly good fit if you have needs for data entry, transcription, or literature review.
Some of you may have already been approached by students who would like to do summer research through URGO. We encourage you to think about how these students might support your own research agenda. While some advanced students might have a project in mind, we have found that students benefit the most from working within a faculty member’s area of expertise and current line of inquiry.

Applications available for URGO Summer Research Program

The URGO Summer Research Program is an on-campus program where undergraduate students are funded to conduct research or creative activities under the guidance of a faculty mentor.
• 200 or 400 hours
• Program runs May 14-July 29, 2020
• Full-time = $4,400 plus housing stipend
• Half-time = $2,200 plus housing stipend
• Design project with a faculty mentor
• Seminars and Speaker Series for support and professional development
• Final written product and oral presentation
There is also the option to be a Research Assistant at 100 hours for the summer (stipend of $1,100), in which undergraduates assist faculty with research tasks.

Apply for a Boren Scholarship to cover language learning abroad!
The Boren Scholarship program is an initiative by the US Federal Government to increase the study of languages by individuals committed to public service careers. The Boren Scholarship can be used to cover a variety of study abroad experiences, including their Flagship Language Initiative programs and others. URGO and Study Abroad provide joint advising on this program and will work with all applicants to select the program, develop budgets and write the application essays.
Scholarship amounts:
Up to $20,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)
Up to $10,000 for 12-24 weeks
Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

Multicultural Student Services Scholarships

The Multicultural Student Services Scholarships (including ASIA Scholarship, Bonnie Wallace American Indian Scholarship, HOLA Scholarship and M. Anita Gay Hawthorne Scholarship) recognize returning underrepresented undergraduate students in the Day program. Students who are eligible and awarded will receive a $2,500 annual, renewable award. These scholarships are for returning students of American Indian/Latinx/Pan-Afrikan/Pan-Asian descent and/or a student who has participated, demonstrated record of and/or potential for leadership and awareness within the communities mentioned above.

Scholastic Connections is a scholarship program for high-achieving undergraduate students of color at Augsburg University. It is designed to assist students succeed in completing their undergraduate degree and prepare them to be engaged, successful citizens of the world on graduation by facilitating career development and planning.

There are three pillars that support the Scholastic Connections goal: self-development, community development, and post-undergraduate development.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
First-Time Applicants Eligibility Criteria:
-Must have completed at least one full semester at Augsburg by January 10th, 2020
-Must have at least 1 full academic year of their education remaining

Jennifer Bankers-Fulbright will give her talk, “From ‘E’ to ‘F’: Enhancing Student Thinking and Learning During Lectures” tomorrow from 3:20 pm – 3:35 pm in Hagfors 151.

Many instructors use the authoritative/interactive model of class instruction. A simple way for instructors to move toward a dialogic/interactive model is to move from using the IRE (inquiry-response-evaluation) pattern when asking students questions to the IRF (inquiry-response-feedback) pattern. An overview of the three main models of class instruction as well as examples of IRE and IRF will be presented.

This event is a part of our 2019-2020 CTL Inclusion series focused on creating, maintaining, and/or growing environments that allow students to feel more connected to and supported by Augsburg.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Approaches for Underserved Populations
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approaches have typically been developed and implemented with middle class white populations. On Wednesday, December 11th, from 11AM to Noon at Sverdrup Hall Room 204, graduate students from Augsburg’s PsyD Clinical Psychology program will present posters summarizing research literature on modifying CBT interventions for individuals from four different underserved or nondominant populations–Muslim, Native American, lower socioeconomic status, and prison inmates. Sophomores: $16,000 Phillips Scholarship Mini-Application Now Open

The Phillips Scholars Program recognizes and rewards private college students who strive to make life better for those with unmet needs. Applicants are challenged to think creatively and become community-service leaders, and receive a total of $16,000 in scholarship.

A preliminary mini-application (linked below) is used to select two finalists from Augsburg University who will then develop a full proposal to be submitted to the Minnesota Private College Council for the scholarship. This will include a 5-7 page project proposal, official transcript, and 3 letters of recommendation. Staff members of the Sabo Center will help finalists complete their applications.

Applicants must be a sophomore during the 2019-2020 school year.

Each year, projects must fit within a theme. This year’s application theme is “Addressing the Achievement/Opportunity Gap in Minnesota.”

Scholarship recipients receive $6,000 during their junior year, a $4,000 stipend while completing a summer project, and $6,000 their senior year upon successful completion of their summer project.

Last year, 3 of the 5 Phillips Scholar recipients were Augsburg students, and many Augsburg students have received the scholarship in the past. The Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning is accepting submissions for their special issue “Centering Social Justice in the Scholarship of Community Engagement.”

The issue will highlight how scholars have centered social justice when designing and implementing service-learning opportunities or producing and applying engaged scholarship.

The editors invite abstracts for submissions from educators and researchers from all fields and disciplines that:

*Report research on the challenges, motivations, and experiences of practicing community engagement
*Explore the often-overlooked contributions to the field of community engaged-scholarship by educators, researchers, practitioners, community partners, and community members from historically marginalized backgrounds
*Evaluate methodologies for the practice and research of engagement based on their ability to achieve social justice

Nominate a student for the Newman Civic Fellowship

The Newman Civic Fellowship recognizes and supports community-committed students who are change makers and public problem-solvers at Campus Compact member institutions. Fellows are nominated by their president or chancellor on the basis of their potential for public leadership.

Newman Civic Fellows:
*Engage in collaborative action with others from campus or from surrounding communities in order to create long-term social change
*Take action in addressing issues of inequality and political polarization
*Demonstrate the motivation and potential for effective long-term civic engagement

Through the fellowship, Campus Compact provides students with training and resources that nurture their assets and passions and help them develop strategies for social change. The yearlong program, named for Campus Compact founder Frank Newman, includes virtual learning opportunities and networking as part of a national network of engaged student leaders and an optional in-person convening.

Staff, faculty, and students are encouraged to nominate a student to be considered for Augsburg’s 2020-2021 Newman Civic Fellow (self-nominations accepted). The nominee must have at least one full year of their education remaining, such that they will be enrolled in higher education for the entirety of the 2020-2021 school year.

2020 NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship Program – applications due January 20

Students can now apply for the 2020 NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship Program at Augsburg University. This scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

This competitive program awards up to 6 scholarships for spring semester, 2020 (totaling $8000), in the following areas:

-Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Junior). Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
-Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior). Scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

Strong candidates for the grant will be students who…
-are a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, or mathematics/science education;
-can demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership within their major area; and
-show an interest in contributing to NASA’s mission.

The Share Shop is now open for students to rent out items! Located in the sublevel of Science hall (Not Hagfors), room 8. Our hours as of now are:
Mondays: 10am-Noon, 2-4pm
Tuesdays: 1-4pm
Wednesdays: 10:30am-Noon

We have items ranging from bedding, games, kitchenware and appliances, and other household goods.

Additionally, we also have Augsburg gear to give away, which have been thoughtfully donated by the Bookstore.

We’re still looking for donations from student, staff and faculty. Due to several unusable/inappropriate donations, all donations must be dropped off at the Shop during open hours, and approved by a staff member. The items we are in need of are:

Campus Kitchen is proud to announce our partnership with Brightside Produce and aid in their mission to make healthy produce more accessible to food insecure neighborhoods. Starting next Tuesday, October 29, we will be launching our own Buyers Club branch here at Augsburg. This is a weekly produce subscription ranging from $3, $5, $10, & $20. Your subscription will help bring fresh produce to corner stores in the Cedar Riverside area. If you are interested in joining the buyers club please follow these step by step instructions to set up your subscription.

1.) Go to https://brightsidempls.org
2.) Click the menu button in the top left corner of the screen and select “join the Buyers Club”.
3.) Follow the instructions on the buyers club page (subscription size, Augsburg pick up, items you prefer to be left out of your bags, and whether or not you would like to start a weekly subscription or make a one time purchase.)

This workshop provides participants with the tools, skills, knowledge, and resources to be intentionally supportive to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA) communities. Additionally, this workshop will cover definitions and terminology, tackle current issues and challenges facing LGBTQIA+ students, and practice skill-building scenarios. Finally, this workshop will help faculty and staff to develop and grow their inclusive understandings of gender and sexuality while creating and maintaining Augsburg spaces that affirm the wholeness of identities. Please Note: Those who attend Ally Training I will receive an ally placard that they may place on a visible surface near their Augsburg work area.

Apply for a Boren Scholarship to cover language learning abroad!
The Boren Scholarship program is an initiative by the US Federal Government to increase the study of languages by individuals committed to public service careers. The Boren Scholarship can be used to cover a variety of study abroad experiences, including their Flagship Language Initiative programs and others. URGO and Study Abroad provide joint advising on this program and will work with all applicants to select the program, develop budgets and write the application essays.
Scholarship amounts:
Up to $20,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)
Up to $10,000 for 12-24 weeks
Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

The URGO Summer Research Program is designed to enhance undergraduate student learning and support faculty research and creative activity here on campus. Faculty are the driving force behind the research program, and we want it to be as beneficial to you as possible.
While summer is the perfect time to push research projects ahead, we know all too well how quickly the time goes. We have research grants for 400, 200, and 100 student research hours that are designed to provide you with the optimal amount of student research support needed for your project. The 100-hour research assistantship is a particularly good fit if you have needs for data entry, transcription, or literature review.
Some of you may have already been approached by students who would like to do summer research through URGO. We encourage you to think about how these students might support your own research agenda. While some advanced students might have a project in mind, we have found that students benefit the most from working within a faculty member’s area of expertise and current line of inquiry.

“The Minnesota Youth Climate Strike’s fourth National Strike will take place on December 6, from 3pm-5:00pm at the same time as other events happening globally. You can leave/join at any time – we will be having a teach-in at the Capitol rotunda.

The event will have a bit of a twist – we will be sitting in the capitol rotunda demanding that Tim Walz, Steve Simon, Julie Blaha, and Keith Ellison – the four Democrats who manage the state pension fund – divest from dangerous fossil fuel investments. We will have speakers, chants, action steps, and more! All ages are welcomed and encouraged to attend – we need all the help we can get if we’re going to fight the climate crisis!”

Applications available for URGO Summer Research Program

The URGO Summer Research Program is an on-campus program where undergraduate students are funded to conduct research or creative activities under the guidance of a faculty mentor.
• 200 or 400 hours
• Program runs May 14-July 29, 2020
• Full-time = $4,400 plus housing stipend
• Half-time = $2,200 plus housing stipend
• Design project with a faculty mentor
• Seminars and Speaker Series for support and professional development
• Final written product and oral presentation
There is also the option to be a Research Assistant at 100 hours for the summer (stipend of $1,100), in which undergraduates assist faculty with research tasks.

Students can now apply for the 2020 NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship Program at Augsburg University. This scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

This competitive program awards up to 6 scholarships for spring semester, 2020 (totaling $8000), in the following areas:

-Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Junior). Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
-Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior). Scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

Strong candidates for the grant will be students who…
-are a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, or mathematics/science education;
-can demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership within their major area; and
-show an interest in contributing to NASA’s mission.

Please note that students from traditionally underrepresented groups in science and mathematics fields are especially encouraged to apply. No applicant shall be denied consideration based on race, creed, color, national origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, or ability.

On December 12th at 6:30pm, we will be hosting an event with a goal of exploring the stories of the three Abrahamic religions’ Prophets. The event will be held at Augsburg University in Old Main, room 105. This event is one in a series of monthly events over the course of the year that aims to facilitate interfaith dialogue around a variety of topics. The purpose of this event is to explore the intersections of the prophets stories among different faith traditions. We would love to invite you as a listener and participant. Schield elected President (Isaacson elected Sec/Treas) of National Numeracy Network

Milo Schield and Marc Isaacson, Business Administration, were elected President and Secretary-Treasurer, respectively, of the National Numeracy Network (NNN). The NNN’s mission is to increase numeracy: the skills needed by citizens and decision-makers to read and evaluate the quantitative informtion they receive everyday.

The NNN does this by holding annual meetings, by publishing “Numeracy” (an open-source, no-cost, peer-reviewed journal), by conducting teacher-training workshops and by coordinating math learning centers. The 2019 Annual Meeting was held in Austin, Texas and sponsored by the Charles A. Dana Center.

Institutional sponsors of the NNN include the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), the American Statistical Association (ASA), and the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U).

From “E” to “F”: Enhancing Student Thinking and Learning During Lectures. Many instructors use the authoritative/interactive model of class instruction. A simple way for instructors to move toward a dialogic/interactive model is to move from using the IRE (inquiry-response-evaluation) pattern when asking students questions to the IRF (inquiry-response-feedback) pattern. An overview of the three main models of class instruction as well as examples of IRE and IRF will be presented.

This event is a part of our 2019-2020 CTL Inclusion series focused on creating, maintaining, and/or growing environments that allow students to feel more connected to and supported by Augsburg.

We are delighted to highlight this traditional Mexican holiday – a collaboration between Campus Ministry and Latinx Student Services and Director Ruby Murillo. We will be singing a traditional song, Desde el Cielo “La Guadalupana”, and would love to have community members join to help sing or play an instrument (such as guitar, tambourine, trumpet.) Sophomores: $16,000 Phillips Scholarship Mini-Application Now Open

The Phillips Scholars Program recognizes and rewards private college students who strive to make life better for those with unmet needs. Applicants are challenged to think creatively and become community-service leaders, and receive a total of $16,000 in scholarship.

A preliminary mini-application (linked below) is used to select two finalists from Augsburg University who will then develop a full proposal to be submitted to the Minnesota Private College Council for the scholarship. This will include a 5-7 page project proposal, official transcript, and 3 letters of recommendation. Staff members of the Sabo Center will help finalists complete their applications.

Applicants must be a sophomore during the 2019-2020 school year.

Each year, projects must fit within a theme. This year’s application theme is “Addressing the Achievement/Opportunity Gap in Minnesota.”

Scholarship recipients receive $6,000 during their junior year, a $4,000 stipend while completing a summer project, and $6,000 their senior year upon successful completion of their summer project.

Last year, 3 of the 5 Phillips Scholar recipients were Augsburg students, and many Augsburg students have received the scholarship in the past. The Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning is accepting submissions for their special issue “Centering Social Justice in the Scholarship of Community Engagement.”

The issue will highlight how scholars have centered social justice when designing and implementing service-learning opportunities or producing and applying engaged scholarship.

The editors invite abstracts for submissions from educators and researchers from all fields and disciplines that:

*Report research on the challenges, motivations, and experiences of practicing community engagement
*Explore the often-overlooked contributions to the field of community engaged-scholarship by educators, researchers, practitioners, community partners, and community members from historically marginalized backgrounds

Course Description:
Many U.S. citizens know little of Guatemala and the struggles its people face although it is a nation that continuously finds its fortunes bound to the interests and intent of the United States.

This course invites you to hear Guatemalan people’s views of their country, to explore past and present US involvement, and learn from those who lived through and survived the civil war spanning four decades (1960-1996), as well as a new generation of writers and artists–all who creatively and peacefully counteract the culture of fear through art and literature.
This 4-credit course is part of the spring 2020 enrollment. It can be taken as part of, or in addition to, your usual course load, and overload fees incurred by this study abroad program will be waived.

Now that we are all settled into the semester, please join us in the Biology Department Home from 2-4PM on Friday, December 6th to help welcome our newest faculty member, Dr. Jason Tan. Originally from Minnesota, Dr. Tan came to us from Virginia Commonwealth University where he was a postdoctoral IRACDA Fellow. He is one of two biochemists (the other being Dr. Ben Binder) who are leading our new B.S. major in Biochemistry. 630 Cedar Fire – Emergency Fund

An emergency fund has been established to provide assistance to the families affected by the tragic fire in the 630 Cedar apartment building that occurred on November 27th. Five lives were lost, three people are still hospitalized and many more were displaced from their homes. Contributions to this fund will be used to help victims of the fire with food, clothing, shelter, medical care and other emergency needs that may arise. Campus Kitchen is proud to announce our partnership with Brightside Produce and aid in their mission to make healthy produce more accessible to food insecure neighborhoods. Starting next Tuesday, October 29, we will be launching our own Buyers Club branch here at Augsburg. This is a weekly produce subscription ranging from $3, $5, $10, & $20. Your subscription will help bring fresh produce to corner stores in the Cedar Riverside area. If you are interested in joining the buyers club please follow these step by step instructions to set up your subscription.

1.) Go to https://brightsidempls.org
2.) Click the menu button in the top left corner of the screen and select “join the Buyers Club”.
3.) Follow the instructions on the buyers club page (subscription size, Augsburg pick up, items you prefer to be left out of your bags, and whether or not you would like to start a weekly subscription or make a one time purchase.)
4.) You will also have the option of purchasing a reusable tote bag from Brightside for your subscriptions, if you feel inclined to do so.

The Share Shop is now open for students to rent out items! Located in the sublevel of Science hall (Not Hagfors), room 8. Our hours as of now are:
Mondays: 10am-Noon, 2-4pm
Tuesdays: 1-4pm
Wednesdays: 10:30am-Noon

We have items ranging from bedding, games, kitchenware and appliances, and other household goods.

Additionally, we also have Augsburg gear to give away, which have been thoughtfully donated by the Bookstore.

We’re still looking for donations from student, staff and faculty. Due to several unusable/inappropriate donations, all donations must be dropped off at the Shop during open hours, and approved by a staff member. The items we are in need of are:

The Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning is accepting submissions for their special issue “Centering Social Justice in the Scholarship of Community Engagement.”

The issue will highlight how scholars have centered social justice when designing and implementing service-learning opportunities or producing and applying engaged scholarship.

The editors invite abstracts for submissions from educators and researchers from all fields and disciplines that:

*Report research on the challenges, motivations, and experiences of practicing community engagement
*Explore the often-overlooked contributions to the field of community engaged-scholarship by educators, researchers, practitioners, community partners, and community members from historically marginalized backgrounds
*Evaluate methodologies for the practice and research of engagement based on their ability to achieve social justice
*Apply the lessons of critical theoretical and methodological lenses such as post-colonial theory, feminism, critical race theory, queer theory, disability studies, and ecocriticism, to advance community engagement pedagogies and practices.

Sophomores: $16,000 Phillips Scholarship Pre-Application Now Open

The Phillips Scholars Program recognizes and rewards private college students who strive to make life better for those with unmet needs. Applicants are challenged to think creatively and become community-service leaders.

A preliminary application (linked below) is used to select two finalists from Augsburg University who will then develop a full proposal to be submitted to the Minnesota Private College Council for the scholarship. This will include a 5-7 page project proposal, official transcript, and 3 letters of recommendation. Staff members of the Sabo Center will help finalists complete their applications.

Applicants must be a sophomore during the 2019-2020 school year.

Each year, projects must fit within a theme. This year’s application theme is “Addressing the Achievement/Opportunity Gap in Minnesota.”

Scholarship recipients receive $6,000 during their junior year, a $4,000 stipend while completing a summer project, and $6,000 their senior year upon successful completion of their summer project.

Last year, 3 of the 5 Phillips Scholar recipients were Augsburg students, and many Augsburg students have received the scholarship in the past. End of Semester Course Surveys: Faculty

These next two weeks are the prime time for faculty to set aside 5-7 minutes at the beginning of class for students to complete the University Course Survey. They can do so on their phones and faculty should leave the room since as a body we decided these surveys should be voluntary. The critical feature of this design is that it complements course specific data you collect on your own (in class survey, focus group, class discussion) to improve teaching and learning. We are working to increase response rates (so if you forget and rate is low that may be why) and to change the culture of faculty and student attention to course feedback. Department and Program Chairs are asked to make sure our adjunct and new faculty are aware of our process at Augsburg. “The Minnesota Youth Climate Strike’s fourth National Strike will take place on December 6, from 3pm-5:00pm at the same time as other events happening globally. You can leave/join at any time – we will be having a teach-in at the Capitol rotunda.

The event will have a bit of a twist – we will be sitting in the capitol rotunda demanding that Tim Walz, Steve Simon, Julie Blaha, and Keith Ellison – the four Democrats who manage the state pension fund – divest from dangerous fossil fuel investments. We will have speakers, chants, action steps, and more! All ages are welcomed and encouraged to attend – we need all the help we can get if we’re going to fight the climate crisis!”

Course Description:
Many U.S. citizens know little of Guatemala and the struggles its people face although it is a nation that continuously finds its fortunes bound to the interests and intent of the United States.

This course invites you to hear Guatemalan people’s views of their country, to explore past and present US involvement, and learn from those who lived through and survived the civil war spanning four decades (1960-1996), as well as a new generation of writers and artists–all who creatively and peacefully counteract the culture of fear through art and literature.
This 4-credit course is part of the spring 2020 enrollment. It can be taken as part of, or in addition to, your usual course load, and overload fees incurred by this study abroad program will be waived.

Program cost $3,825
