New Copiers and Copy Request System Over the Summer

The lease on the current fleet of Canon multi-function copiers is over this summer and it will be replaced by Sharp machines. If you are here in the summer, you will witness the transformation. If you are away in the summer, you will be welcomed back by a new machine with new features; I think you’ll especially like the pull-out keyboard for easier typing (a message to someone you’re scanning to, etc.) We will provide training to all. We’ll also be rolling out a new on-line copy request system; you’ll find it in the same place under Inside Augsburg>Administrative tasks.

Augsburg Street Closures and Parking Lot Assignment

In order to accommodate the next phase of the HCSBR construction project, Augsburg College will be closing South 7th Street and the majority of 21st Avenue South. These closures will begin on Monday, May 1st and will remain in place until Friday, September 1st. We will also be designating Lot A (which currently houses car pool parking spaces) as construction related parking only. Special permits will be assigned and violators will be removed. As a reminder, parking during summer months is allowed with any 2016/2017 parking permit in surface lots B, D, C, K and L. Summer permits are currently being sold for those who did not possess a 2016/2017 permit.

AugSTEM Scholarship Deadline June 15

Applications are now open for the 2017-18 AugSTEM Program.

The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF DUE-1565060), AugSTEM Scholars receive scholarships of $5,000, $7,500 and $10,000 per student per year. (Differences in award amounts correspond to levels of financial need.) Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:

– Enrolled full-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, chemistry, computer science, environmental studies, mathematics, or physics)

– Within 5 semesters of graduating as of Fall 2017 (plan to graduate with STEM major from Augsburg by Fall 2019 or earlier).

– Major GPA of 3.0 or higher

– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident

– Demonstrate financial need via FAFSA

Two Augsburg theater alums (Quinci Bachman ‘15 & Stephanie Lein Walseth ’00,) one soon-to-graduate theater major (Malick Ceesay,) & Augsburg Professor Emerita Martha Johnson are all part of the upcoming Full Circle Theater Company’s production of Suzan-Lori Parks’ 365 DAYS/PLAYS: A 2017 Remix at Penumbra Theater, St. Paul, from May 26 – June 11.

Martha Johnson directed an earlier version of this production with a student cast at Augsburg in 2012. Full Circle’s version will feature 6 directors (including Stephanie Lein Walseth, Harry Waters Jr., Rick Shiomi, Lara Trujillo, James Williams, and Martha Johnson) and a cast of 10 professional actors. Well-known African dancer Patricia Brown will choreograph. Quinci Bachman will serve as co-sound designer and stage manager. Malick Ceesay will be props designer and assistant stage manager.

Alek Lukanen Presents at MSI 2017 Research Exhibition

Alek Lukanen, a Mathematics and Computer Science double major, presented a poster at the annual Minnesota Supercomputing Institute (MSI) Research Exhibition on Tuesday, April 25. This exhibition highlights work done using the MSI supercomputer cluster over the previous academic year. Alek’s work is a result of his URGO project started in the summer of 2016 titled “Equilibrium Statistics of Vortex Filaments and the Pivot Algorithm”. Congratulations, Alek, on a job well done!

Katie Koch ’01, director of alumni and constituent relations, will share her experiences and photos from the recent trip to Germany, which celebrated the 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation, and will speak about the history of the travel program. Professor Kathy Swanson, who led the January 2017 trip to Thailand and Cambodia, will highlight her travel stories and photos. The cost of this event is $30 per person. Audition for the 2017-2018 Augsburg Choir

Auditions for the 2017-2018 Augsburg Choir will be held in the Music Building (Choir Room – M3) on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 24, 25 and 26.

HISTORY: The choir, now in its 84th year, is one of Augsburg’s oldest ongoing organizations. For the past 37 years it has been the anchor ensemble of the college’s Advent Vespers which is attended by some 8000 people each year.

THIS NEXT YEAR: Mark Sedio (’76) will continue as conductor for this forthcoming academic year. In addition to his role at Augsburg, Sedio is Cantor (Director of Music) at Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis. He is a widely published composer, choral and organ clinician, stand-up comedian, teacher and a specialist in multi-cultural/world music. This forthcoming year the choir will not only focus on choral repertoire from Europe (i.e. Iceland, Slovakia, Germany, Estonia), the United States and Latin America – but will partner with the National Lutheran Choir and Palestinian ethnomusicologist Zafer Tawil for a program highlighting music of the Middle East and North Africa.

Student Wins NSF Grad Award

Augsburg senior Mike Alves (chemistry) has been awarded the prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship that recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in STEM disciplines. NSF received 13,000 applications this cycle and awarded 2,000 grants. Fellows benefit from a three-year annual stipend of $34,000 along with a $12,000 cost of education allowance for tuition and fees (paid to the institution).

Mike is a transfer student from MCTC who was afforded the opportunity to conduct URGO research with Dr. David Hanson the summer prior to starting at Augsburg through AugSTEM grant (Rebekah Dupont PI) funding. That fall he continued working with Dr. Hanson and was admitted to the McNair Scholars Program. The following summer he conducted research at the University of California San Diego, where he has decided to pursue a PhD in chemistry and biochemistry.

Congratulations, Mike. We all look forward to observing your contributions to science.

Two Fulbright Winners; Two Fulbright Alternates

Overview of 2016-2017 Fulbright Results
Of the seven Augsburg students named Fulbright semi-finalists, two were named awardees, two were named alternates, one is still waiting to hear from Peru and one, who applied to Turkey, learned the program has been cancelled this cycle due to political unrest.

Two Fulbright Winners; Two Fulbright Alternates
Rachel Frantz (2017, biology, lacrosse, cross country, choir) awarded English Teaching Assistant grant to Malaysia. She also has been admitted to a PhD program in Marine Biology with full funding at the University of Southern California–Los Angeles. She will attend six months of graduate school, teach for a year in Malaysia and then return to her PhD studies.

Hannah Frey (2015, international relations, history, Honors Program, orchestra) awarded an English Teaching Assistant grant to South Korea.

Hannah Schmidt (2017, sociology, religion, biology, Presidential Scholar, Honors Program, choir) named alternate for an English Teaching Assistant grant to Czech Republic.

Erica Byer (2017) English as a Second Language, music, German, Presidential Scholar, Honors Program, orchestra, band) named alternate for English Teaching Assistant grant to Bulgaria.

Student Receives Prestigious Boren Award

Jubilee Prosser received the 2017 Boren Scholarship, $8,000 for summer language and cultural study in Tanzania. Jubilee is our first recipient ever (or at least for many years). Boren Scholarships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad.

Jubilee is double majoring in biology and environmental studies while minoring in political science. A Presidential Scholar and Honors Program Participant, she also conducted URGO summer research with Dr. Emily Schilling, completed the River Semester and a 4-month study abroad experience in Kenya. Her long-term plans are to earn a Master’s of Public Health degree in epidemiology or environmental health. Because of her long-term goals, Jubilee has decided to turn down the Boren award to conduct research with epidemiologist Mark Travers at the Roswell Park Institute for Cancer Research in Buffalo, New York this summer. She is considering applying for Boren again at the graduate level.

Boren has opportunities for semester ($10,000) to one year ($20,000) study abroad experiences for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as the shorter summer experience for STEM undergraduates. Boren Scholars represent a vital pool of highly motivated individuals who wish to work in the federal national security arena. In exchange for funding, Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation.

West Bank Greener and Cleaner-Earth Day Celebrations

In 2017 we’re focusing on making the West Bank greener *and* cleaner, and what better weekend to celebrate that than Earth Day weekend?! Stop by our table April 21 or 22, from 10am-12pm. In addition to tasty snacks, we’ll have information about garbage and recycling can adoption, neighborhood clean-ups, and graffiti removal. We’ll also be distributing graffiti removal kits and supplies and will have sign-up sheets for hosted clean-ups.

Help us reach our targets! Our goals this year are: 5 more adopted trash cans, 10 *NEW* recycling cans, and 5 extra clean-ups.

Stop by for more information, to sign up, OR to pick up supplies for your earth day cleanup activities!

Honduran Writer and Singer On Campus Today

Event featuring 2 amazing artists from Honduras… Melissa Cardoza and Karla Lara.

Friday, April 21st 1:50pm-3:00pm, Foss Studio

Melissa Cardoza’s book “13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance” tells 13 stories of women who joined the resistance to the U.S. backed 2009 coup d’etat. Melissa is a fearless Afro-indigenous journalist, poet, writer, and feminist organizer from Honduras.

Melissa will be touring with her fellow member of the Honduran Red de Defensoras (or network of women rights defenders) and beloved jazz/folk protest singer Karla Lara, who appears in one of the book’s stories and has been an icon and sharp voice for the resistance. Both of the women were close friends of Berta Cáceres, the Honduran indigenous leader and organizer of COPINH, who was assassinated for her work in defense of the Lenca people and against patriarchy, capitalism, and racism. This book and this tour are dedicated to Berta.

Epic Stress Less Fest Tonight

Audition for the 2017-2018 Augsburg Choir

Auditions for the 2017-2018 Augsburg Choir will be held in the Music Building (Choir Room – M3) on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 24, 25 and 26.

HISTORY: The choir, now in its 84th year, is one of Augsburg’s oldest ongoing organizations. For the past 37 years it has been the anchor ensemble of the college’s Advent Vespers which is attended by some 8000 people each year.

THIS NEXT YEAR: Mark Sedio (’76) will continue as conductor for this forthcoming academic year. In addition to his role at Augsburg, Sedio is Cantor (Director of Music) at Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis. He is a widely published composer, choral and organ clinician, stand-up comedian, teacher and a specialist in multi-cultural/world music. This forthcoming year the choir will not only focus on choral repertoire from Europe (i.e. Iceland, Slovakia, Germany, Estonia), the United States and Latin America – but will partner with the National Lutheran Choir and Palestinian ethnomusicologist Zafer Tawil for a program highlighting music of the Middle East and North Africa.

Severe Weather Awareness Week – Tornado Drill Day

For more than 20 years, the state of Minnesota has conducted a Severe Weather Awareness Week in partnership with the National Weather Service and local governments. A statewide tornado drill is part of that event.

On Thursday April 20, 2017 simulated tornado watches and warnings will be issued to test the statewide warning and communications systems. All counties in Minnesota normally participate in the first drill at 1:45 p.m. unless actual severe weather is expected. Please consider this an opportunity to familiarize yourself with designated tornado shelter areas or safe spaces in areas that you frequent.

In an Apartment, Dorm or Condo:
If you live in an apartment that is on an upper floor, get to the lowest level of the building immediately. This could be an underground parking garage or a neighbor’s first floor apartment. Then, move to the most interior area, away from windows.

If you live in a high-rise apartment building, you may not have enough time to get to a lower level, so picking a place in the hallway in the center of your building (such as a stairwell) is the best idea. If that is not available, a closet, bathroom or interior hall without windows is the safest spot in your apartment during a tornado. Power loss during a tornado storm is common, so avoid elevators and keep a flashlight handy.

In an Office Building, Hospital or Store:
Go directly to an enclosed, windowless area in the center of the building – away from glass and on the lowest floor possible. Then, crouch down and cover your head. Interior stairwells are usually good places to take shelter and, if not crowded, allow you to get to a lower level quickly. Stay off the elevators so that you aren’t trapped if the power is lost.

Earth Day Neighborhood Clean-Ups

In celebration of Earth Day there will be several neighborhood clean-ups taking place around Augsburg on Saturday, April 22. In the Seward Neighborhood, a clean-up along Franklin Avenue and the I-94 frontage road will be happening from 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Meet at the Franklin Housing Co-op at 2300 Franklin Ave. There will be three community clean-ups taking place in the Cedar Riverside neighborhood: Riverside Park (9:00 – 11:00 a.m.; 2820 S. 8th Street); Bluff Street Park (9:30 a.m.- 12 p.m.; 1 20th Ave. S.); and Currie Park (1 p.m. – 3 p.m.; 500 15th Ave. S.). Bags, gloves, and other supplies will be provided.

May 2017 Faculty Diversity and Inclusion Institute

The May 2017 Faculty Diversity and Inclusion Institute will concentrate on select foundational principles of creating more inclusive classrooms and interactions by focusing on improving communication and conflict resolution across cultures and by improving the success of all students through culturally responsive teaching across majors.

Notes
● The Institute will be divided into a morning session and an afternoon session.
● Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
● Institute will be led by a faculty/staff collaboration.
● There are only 36 spaces available for the institute, and participants must register by using the link below. (A waiting list will be instituted if registration surpasses 36 participants.)
● Participation in the Institute counts towards a Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program requirement.

Steps to follow when hiring a student worker for summer 2017

1. Students returning into a position they held previously will only need a Student Employment Hire Form submitted through Hirezon/Interview Exchange.

2. Looking for a student worker to hire? Any new position will need to be posted through Human Resources to the internal student jobs board. Student Requisitions can be submitted though Hirezon/Interview Exchange. Once it’s submitted, we will post the position online. Hiring managers will be able to view applications in real time through the system.

3. When you’ve selected a student to hire, complete the Student Employment Hire Form through Hirezon/Interview Exchange. Students who have never worked on campus before will need to fill out additional HR forms, including a background check, before they will be authorized to work.

English Professor Doug Green’s poem “Better in French,” has been selected to appear on a national poetry blog in celebration of National Poetry Month. “Better in French” first appeared online as an honorable mention in the October 2016 Goodreads Newsletter Contest. Congratulations, Doug!

Creating an Inclusive Campus Workshop on May 8 – RSVP Now

All faculty and staff are invited to attend this year’s Creating an Inclusive Campus (CIC) workshop, entitled “Supporting Our Students in Turbulent Times: Civic Engagement and Nonviolent Philosophy in Higher Education.”

This half day workshop will engage participants in exploring the history, philosophy and skills needed to promote a deep commitment to civic engagement, democratic principles and pedagogy in the classroom and broader community.
