Faculty, do you wish you had uninterrupted time to write / work on scholarship? If so, you will want to take advantage of the annual Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat. Jess established a tradition of allowing faculty and academic staff time away from campus to focus entirely on scholarship. There is no schedule for this retreat – it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. The Provost and the Center for Teaching and Learning will cover the cost of the retreat.

The retreat will take place Sunday, May 21 at 3 p.m. through Tuesday, May 23 at 1 p.m. (after lunch). Please e-mail ctl@augsburg.edu to reserve your space.

Augsburg Forms University Events Department, Promotes Jodi Collen to Senior Director

I am pleased to announce that Augsburg has established a new University Events department within the Marketing division, expanding the responsibilities of the Event and Conference Planning team and promoting Jodi Collen to senior director of University Events.

We’ve all seen how the work of Augsburg’s event planning team — Jodi, Seth Lienard, Sarah Cash-Darvell, plus their hard-working student crews — has a major impact in enhancing the event experience and reputation of the College. As the new University Events department, this core group will continue to lead the design, planning and management of Augsburg’s more than 400 annual live events — including signature events such as commencement, homecoming, scholarship weekend, and the Nobel Peace Prize Forum. University Events will also continue managing summer conferences and other external events that generate revenue for the College.

In addition, Jodi’s new role will include strategic leadership and project management to support major universitywide initiatives. Two significant institutional initiatives that Jodi has already taken on are the name-change transition to Augsburg University this summer and project management for the 2019 Sesquicentennial Planning Committee, co-chaired by Theater Arts Professor Darcey Engen ’88 and Athletic Director Jeff Swenson ’79. We are excited to extend Jodi’s project management expertise to these highly visible Augsburg initiatives.

We are currently in the process of updating the Inside Augsburg directory and other records with the new University Events department name. In the meantime, please join me in congratulating Jodi on her new role and thanking the University Events team for its ongoing leadership in creating authentically Augsburg experiences for our students, alumni, guests and campus community.

Last Day to Apply for Fairview IT Internships

Fairview Health Services is currently seeking applicants for Information Technology summer internships as part of the MSP TechHire Scholars initiative. Funding from the City of Minneapolis will enable Fairview to hire up to three Augsburg students, who will each complete a paid ($20/per hour) full-time summer internship within IT at Fairview.

Eligible candidates will meet the following criteria:
– Identify as a student of color, first generation college student (neither parent has a 4 year degree), and/or low income (Pell Grant or MN Dream Grant eligible)
– Major or minor in MIS, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Business Management
– Rising Senior in good standing at Augsburg (expected graduation in Dec 2017 or May 2018)
– Interest in pursuing an IT career within healthcare

Unfortunately, international students are not eligible for this opportunity

I stand here today willing and able to serve you on the Augsburg Day Student Government at whatever capacity is asked of me to the best of my ability. As my values and goals as a person very much so align with Augsburg’s mission as a college, I am listening and I can hear you. As stated in our college’s mission statement, “Augsburg College educates students to be informed citizens, thoughtful stewards, critical thinkers, and responsible leaders”. It is a right of every student to be informed of what is happening within our Augsburg community and within our surrounding communities. I want to be your eyes and ears striving to keep you informed and up to date with what is going on in our communities. As we grow toward thoughtful stewardship, I want us to embrace our individual qualities that make us unique, our talents, our strengths, our flaws and weaknesses, which allow us to grow, and have confidence in our own independence as college students and growing adults. Others frequently comment that I am an avid critical thinker. I want to know more than just the solution to a problem. I want to know how we arrived at the solution from the problem. I believe transparency is highly important, and it is something that is very important to me. I will strive to be as transparent as possible with you as your class senator. I have a duty and responsibility to be a leader within our community. I want students to know that I am listening and that I can hear you. Nimco Yasin rose to fame as part of a member of the legendary Waaberi Group in the 80s. Waaberi Group, or “Dawn Players,” was Somalia’s government-sponsored music and dance troupe that included the most talented singers, musicians, and dancers in the country. With more than 300 members over its 30-year existence, the group was a source of national pride and toured the world multiple times. Known for her striking voice and emotional love ballads, Yasin eloquently revives the vintage qaraami (or “Somali jazz”) sound that Waaberi was known for, while bringing it into a modern context.

Drought in Somalia Relief Help

Hello all. Please see this important message from Zahra Hassan, of Fairview Hospital, who works with Augsburg’s Health Commons program in Cedar-Riverside.

“The drought in Somalia is turning into the worst Famine in 60 years. Beginning of this month over a two day span over 100 people died in one area due to hunger. The people in Somalia need us as much as the ones we are working here at the Health Commons. Our work in the Health Commons involves providing resources and working together with the community to achieve optimum health. With many of the community we serve in our Cedar Riverside Health Commons having families in Somalia they are affected by what is happening back home. As part of Health Commons team I thought we can assist in contributing to making a difference in Somalia. Below is a non-profit organization I am volunteering with that is on the ground in Somalia and other parts of East Africa. I am reaching out to ask for donations and would like you to pass on the link for others to please donate.

This presentation highlights Minnesota-Mexico cultural, educational, economic and environmental connections and the rationale and framework behind the Education department semester abroad program. Dr. Gregoire will talk about how a spring break service learning trip to Cuernavaca in 2003 led to her sabbatical where she had the opportunity to explore and develop a new study abroad program with CGE-Cuernavaca, Mexico faculty and staff.

More about our speaker: Bill Green
Bill Green began working at Augsburg in 1991 as a Professor of History. Over the years, he has held several different teaching positions, including working as both an Adjunct Associate Professor of History at St. John’s University and as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Leadership, Policy, and Organization at Vanderbilt University. From 2006-2010, he served as the Superintendent of Minneapolis Public Schools. Since 2013, he has been back at Augsburg serving as a Professor of History. He regularly teaches Minnesota History, American Legal History, History of Civil Rights, History of African American Religion, 19th Century U.S. History, and History of African American Education.

We hope you can join us on Thursday, March 30 at 12:00-1:15 p.m. to hear more of Bill Green’s vocation story.

Various events are hosted this week to celebrate Pan-Asian cultures & raise awareness on issues that are relevant in the Asian community. This year’s theme of PAW is “We Are H.O.P.E. – Honoring Our Past Experiences. With this theme, we hope to explore our cultural history, embrace it, but also push for changes in the community. Join us in our final event of PAW, where there will be performances, skits, and a fashion show! There will also be an after-party dance after the show!

You may be able to do just that because of a grant awarded to Augsburg College. This program serves juniors and seniors who receive financial aid, improving their odds of graduating and preparing them to enter the workforce with real-world experience in their fields of study.

To be eligible:

* Students must be in good academic standing (2.0+ GPA)

* Students must be a college junior or senior (60 credits completed) at the time of the internship (Second semester sophomores can apply as long as they hold junior standing BEFORE the internship begins)

Wed., 3/29 from 7:00-9:00 p.m., East Commons, Christensen Center

Explore the topic of political resistance in Latinx and Spanish-speaking communities at this open mic event, where we will share poetry, music, visual arts and manifestos in English and/or Spanish. Bring your own work or something drawn from the inspired work of others that promotes peace and social justice. Come to share, come to listen. All are welcome!

We frame resistance as cultural expressions that unite us in our opposition to oppression and that create paths to freedom and promote justice for all.

Want to participate but not sure how? The Spanish and Cross-Cultural Studies faculty would be happy to help you choose a reading or explore resistance music in Spanish or English. Artwork can include posters, photos or paintings. Music can be of your own composition or created by others. Choose something that inspires you!

Use of Recreational Facilities in Kennedy Center/Si Melby Hall

The Augsburg Department of Public Safety would like to remind our entire campus community that facility use in Kennedy Center and Si Melby Hall is for students, staff, faculty, alumni and authorized users. Members of these groups are not permitted to host guests in this space. Check-in procedures after regular business hours will be enforced and an appropriate picture ID will be required. Fob access will also be required after 5:00pm daily. Those found not in compliance will be asked to leave and may be legally prohibited from returning to Augsburg’s campus. Any student, staff, faculty, alumni or authorized user who intentionally violates or attempts to circumvent this policy may lose access privileges as well as face appropriate disciplinary actions.

Faculty, do you wish you had uninterrupted time to write / work on scholarship? If so, you will want to take advantage of the annual Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat. Jess established a tradition of allowing faculty and academic staff time away from campus to focus entirely on scholarship. There is no schedule for this retreat – it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. The Provost and the Center for Teaching and Learning will cover the cost of the retreat.

1,000 Who CAIR; Call to Action – This Saturday

“1,000 who CAIR, a Call to Action: Challenging Islamophobia/Defending Civil Rights” will be held on Saturday, March 25th beginning at 4:00 PM in O’Shaughnessy Auditorium at the University of St. Catherine. This event will be a rallying cry to all who believe in religious freedom for Muslim Americans and all people. The Council on American-Islamic Relations, Minnesota is hosting this event not only as a fundraiser/conference, but as a kick-off to its campaign to activate 10,000 Minnesotans in the fight against bigotry and hatred. The event will feature noted Muslim scholar Dalia Mogahed, Khizr Khan, Rep. Ilhan Omar, Civil Rights Leader Nekima Levy-Pounds and many other politicians and entertainers such as comedians Jeremy McLellan and Danish Maqbool to inspire and energize people into action. Apply for IT Summer Internships at Fairview

Fairview Health Services is currently seeking applicants for Information Technology summer internships as part of the MSP TechHire Scholars initiative. Funding from the City of Minneapolis will enable Fairview to hire up to three Augsburg students, who will each complete a paid ($20/per hour) full-time summer internship within IT at Fairview.

Eligible candidates will meet the following criteria:
– Identify as a student of color, first generation college student (neither parent has a 4 year degree), and/or low income (Pell Grant or MN Dream Grant eligible)
– Major or minor in MIS, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Business Management
– Rising Senior in good standing at Augsburg (expected graduation in Dec 2017 or May 2018)
– Interest in pursuing an IT career within healthcare

In order to apply, interested students should email their resume to moralesj@augsburg.edu no later than Wednesday, March 29th. You will also be asked to complete a brief application at that time.

Semifinalists will interview on campus the week of April 10th. Internships begin on May 15th.

Paideia (pie-day-a) is a pedagogy that encourages inquiry-based, democratic discussions around a common text. It can be used with all ages and in all subject areas. The Augsburg College Paideia Program has offered training to the Augsburg community and teachers across the United States for the past twenty-eight years. We invite you to join us this summer.

PAIDEIA INSTITUTE: The 28th annual Paideia Institute, July 24 – 28, 2017, will explore the question What makes a Citizen? This timely and timeless concept will be interrogated through seminar discussions on a variety of genres. Looking for a summer class to take? Interested in improving your skills as a discussion participant and leader? The 28th annual Paideia Institute, July 24 – 28, 2017, will explore the question What makes a Citizen? This timely and timeless concept will be interrogated through seminar discussions on a variety of genres. Coaching activities will develop participants’ skill in facilitating democratic discussions in educational or professional settings.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS: INS 255-A: Paideia Approach: Thinking, Talking, and Reading is a 4 credit course that includes the Paideia Institute, or EDC 498 Independent Study for 2 Credits. Register online through Records and Registration.

GRADUATE STUDENTS: ECS 543 can be taken for either 2 or 4 graduate semester credits and can be counted as an elective course in the MAE program. This course is not offered through the college Records and Registration site. Contact Rachel Lloyd at lloydr@augsburg.edu to register.

Faculty, staff and students are welcome to bring their personal confidential documents to a FREE Shred Event sponsored by Augsburg Facilities Management. Bring your materials (two boxes or bags maximum please) to the Shred Right truck parked between Sverdrup and Lindell Library on Thursday, April 6 between 8:30-9:30 a.m. You must present your documents at this time. We cannot offer early pick-up and storage of your personal documents. If you are not available at this time, it is your choice if you wish to entrust one of your coworkers to bring the documents to the truck for you. An Augsburg ID will be required, as we unfortunately cannot make this a community event.

Interfaith @ Cedar Commons: Celebrating Passover

This week we are celebrating the Passover, the Jewish festival of Freedom. Passover commemorates the Jewish people’s exodus from Egypt and the story serves as a powerful metaphor for many kinds of liberation, with lots for all of us to reflect on.

Our speakers will be two guests from the JCRC. We will not have a full meal but we will have some Passover foods to enjoy!

Do you need to be a “person of faith” to come? Absolutely not. We welcome anyone with interest in conversation about how faith/spirituality shape our lives and intersect with the issues we care about.

We are looking for contributions to artwork to be installed in the new Hagfors Center! Two artists are looking for text passages to accompany three pieces designed for the new building, and we are looking for student input! Selections of text may come from any literary work or religious text of any faith tradition, as long as they are inspiring and fitting with the spirit of the artwork. Display boards depicting the artwork designs will be posted around campus, where anyone may fill out a slip and drop it in the submission box. Augsburg Student Selected for Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting

Vision Bagonza (’17, biology major, chemistry minor, honors program) has been selected to participate in the 67th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting taking place in late June in Lindau, Germany. Only the 400 most qualified young scientists are selected for this opportunity, described on the web site as: “Once every year, 30 to 40 Nobel Laureates convene at Lindau to meet the next generation of leading scientists: undergraduates, PhD students, and post-doc researchers from all over the world. The Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings foster the exchange between scientists of different generations, cultures, and disciplines.” Vision was nominated for the honor by Augsburg’s Nobel Laureate, Dr. Peter Agre. In the past Dr. Agre nominated two other Augsburg students, Brian Krohn and Kirubel Gezejegn, who both received the award.

Throughout her undergraduate career, Vision has engaged in multiple research experiences, including the Mayo Innovation Scholars Program, Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute, Mayo Clinic Biomedical Ethics, and several years in Dr. Ben Stottrup’s biophysics lab. Her first summer research experience was funded by donor and board member Dean Sundquist. Congratulations, Vision.

PAN-ASIAN WEEK

Considering Grad School? Register Now for On-Campus GRE Prep

Going to graduate school by the Fall of 2017 or 2018? Most masters and doctoral programs require the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) for admission. GRE Prep is offered this summer on campus through the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity. You’ll learn the most effective ways tackle the Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing sections on the GRE.

The course meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 5-7:30 PM for four and a half weeks (May 17th – June 19th). The cost is only $100, which includes test prep materials; this is a fraction of the cost when compared to similar classroom GRE prep courses offered by Kaplan or the Princeton Review who charge over $1,000.

Alums and staff are also welcome to register.

More about our speaker: Bill Green
Bill Green began working at Augsburg in 1991 as a Professor of History. Over the years, he has held several different teaching positions, including working as both an Adjunct Associate Professor of History at St. John’s University and as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Leadership, Policy, and Organization at Vanderbilt University. From 2006-2010, he served as the Superintendent of Minneapolis Public Schools. Since 2013, he has been back at Augsburg serving as a Professor of History. He regularly teaches Minnesota History, American Legal History, History of Civil Rights, History of African American Religion, 19th Century U.S. History, and History of African American Education.

We hope you can join us on Thursday, March 30 at 12:00-1:15 p.m. to hear more of Bill Green’s vocation story.

The Christensen Center for Vocation and Campus Ministry are looking for volunteers for the Holy Hoops Basketball Tournament on Sunday, April 2! This is an annual basketball tournament that Augsburg College hosts for churches in the area. It is always lots of fun for participants and volunteers alike!

There are 5 volunteer shifts and we encourage you to sign up for as many as you would like. These shifts are:

In today’s challenging political climate, the skills of civil, civic- minded, and evidence-based democratic deliberation are a necessity. Paideia (pie-day-a) is a pedagogy that encourages inquiry-based, democratic discussions around a common text. It can be used with all ages and in all subject areas. The Augsburg College Paideia Program has offered training to the Augsburg community and teachers across the United States for the past twenty-eight years. We invite you to join us this summer.

PAIDEIA INSTITUTE: The 28th annual Paideia Institute, July 24 – 28, 2017, will explore the question What makes a Citizen? This timely and timeless concept will be interrogated through seminar discussions on a variety of genres. FEES: Registration for the Summer Institute is $600. We are pleased to offer two $500 scholarships: the Marie McNeff Scholarship for Augsburg faculty and the Rita Kaplan Scholarship for staff. New Theology and Public Leadership Degree

The Religion department will be launching a new degree in Theology and Public Leadership in the fall of 2017. This degree program will be replacing the Youth and Family Ministry Degree. This new major will include concentrations in Youth Studies, Leadership and Management, Community Engagement, Worship and Music, Environmental Stewardship, Advocacy and Public Policy, Human Service, and Cross-Cultural Relations. Salmeri appointed as Augsburg’s Executive Director for Recovery Advancement

The College appointed Patrice Salmeri to the donor-endowed position of Executive Director for Recovery Advancement to bring to fruition the strategic priorities of the StepUP Advisory Board and College. In her new role, effective June 2017, Salmeri will work to:

Reduce stigma associated with substance use disorder recovery by advising on and shaping policy issues.
Advise the Augsburg College president on issues and resources related to support for student recovery.
Support and inspire other colleges and universities across the nation to provide recovery programs modeled after Augsburg’s successful StepUP Program.
Develop and pilot programs for students who have graduated from or left the StepUP Program but still have coursework to complete.
Work with StepUP Program alumni and connect soon-to-graduate students with program alumni.

A search is underway to fill the position of Director of StepUP, previously held by Salmeri.

About Patrice Salmeri: The StepUP Program director since 2002, Salmeri has led StepUP Program growth from 30 students per year to over 100. Salmeri is recognized nationally as a leader and champion of recovery, is an expert on residential collegiate recovery, and is a sought-out national speaker on substance use disorder issues related to young people.

Funding from the City of Minneapolis will enable Fairview to hire up to three Augsburg students, who will each complete a paid ($20/per hour) full-time summer internship within IT at Fairview.

Eligible candidates will meet the following criteria:
– Identify as a student of color, first generation college student (neither parent has a 4 year degree), and/or low income (Pell Grant or MN Dream Grant eligible)
– Major or minor in MIS, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Business Management
– Rising Senior in good standing at Augsburg (expected graduation in Dec 2017 or May 2018)

We are looking for contributions to artwork to be installed in the new Hagfors Center! Two artists are looking for text passages to accompany three pieces designed for the new building, and we are looking for student input! Selections of text may come from any literary work or religious text of any faith tradition, as long as they are inspiring and fitting with the spirit of the artwork. Display boards depicting the artwork designs will be posted around campus, where anyone may fill out a slip and drop it in the submission box. Faculty, do you wish you had uninterrupted time to write / work on scholarship? If so, you will want to take advantage of the annual Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat. Jess established a tradition of allowing faculty and academic staff time away from campus to focus entirely on scholarship. There is no schedule for this retreat – it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. The Provost and the Center for Teaching and Learning will cover the cost of the retreat.

Considering Grad School? Register Now for On-Campus GRE Prep

Going to graduate school by the Fall of 2017 or 2018? Most masters and doctoral programs require the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) for admission. GRE Prep is offered this summer on campus through the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity. You’ll learn the most effective ways tackle the Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing sections on the GRE.

The course meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 5-7:30 PM for four and a half weeks (May 17th – June 19th). The cost is only $100, which includes test prep materials; this is a fraction of the cost when compared to similar classroom GRE prep courses offered by Kaplan or the Princeton Review who charge over $1,000.

Alums and staff are also welcome to register.

Explore the topic of political resistance in Latinx and Spanish-speaking communities at this open mic event, where we will share poetry, music, visual arts and manifestos in English and/or Spanish. Bring your own work or something drawn from the inspired work of others that promotes peace and social justice. Come to share, come to listen. All are welcome!

We frame resistance as cultural expressions that unite us in our opposition to oppression and that create paths to freedom and promote justice for all.

Want to participate but not sure how? The Spanish and Cross-Cultural Studies faculty would be happy to help you choose a reading or explore resistance music in Spanish or English. Artwork can include posters, photos or paintings. Music can be of your own composition or created by others. Choose something that inspires you!

The Soup, Gender, and Sexuality series is a variety of events specific to LGBTQIA+ identities. The purpose of these events is to stir in depth conversation across campus about identities that often go unrecognized in academic settings.

The topic for this upcoming event will be “Nonprofit Industrial Complex”. Kyra Brown will be sharing her experience as a queer organizer in the nonprofit and organizing world, critiquing the ways that nonprofits engage with capitalism and white supremacy.

WHO IS THE SPEAKER?
Kyra Brown is a campus organizer for the Minnesota Public Interest Research Group (MPIRG). MPIRG is an organization that provides student leaders the opportunity to engage in social justice through the production of media narratives, legislative literature, and political action. Kyra was elected to be a board representative at MPIRG, which provided her with the opportunity to develop policies and ensure that they were implemented statewide.

Augsburg Alum Accepts Position as Trauma Surgeon

Keneeshia Williams (’03 graduate in biology and chemistry) has accepted the position of Assistant Professor at Emory University/ Trauma-Critical Care Surgeon at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. While at Augsburg Keneeshia conducted aquarium research with Dr. Bill Capman as a McNair Scholar and was an M. Anita Hawthorne Leadership Scholar. She earned her Doctorate of Medicine from University of Illinois at Peoria, spent two years at Loyola University in the NIH training program in trauma and burn research and four years in a General Surgery Residence at Mount Sinai Hospital. She currently is a Surgical Critical Care/Acute Care Surgery Fellow at the University of Arizona (working alongside the surgeon who served congresswoman Gabriel Giffords). Prior to starting medical school Keneeshia was set on a career in pediatrics or family medicine, until she had her first surgical rotation. Two years ago she visited Augsburg and inspired a new round of Augsburg health care professionals with her stories, advice and achievements.
