This year, we exceeded 2016’s all-time high participation rate by one percentage point and reached an outstanding overall survey response of 74%!
Over the summer, we will receive the results of the 2018 survey. Our plan is to share the data with the campus and, where applicable, individual departments and divisions, next fall. As with previous years, the survey results will help us to identify areas where opportunities for improvement exist and to establish plans to support those improvements.

Earn language, Art, Keystone, or Internship credit in Mexico this summer:
AUGSBURG CGEE IN MEXICO: LANGUAGE AND CULTURE IN MEXICO
CGEE in Mexico offers five 3 1/2 week sessions (blocks) focusing on Spanish language and Mexican culture in which students can take one course per session, and take up to five courses throughout the summer. This community-based program includes homestays, a trip to Mexico City, optional weekend excursions, and numerous guest speakers designed to help students learn about history, culture, and contemporary struggles for peace, justice, and human rights.
Spanish language courses at all levels beginning to advanced, as well as specialized Spanish courses in Business Spanish, Spanish for Ministry, and Spanish for Healthcare Professionals can be combined with internships in those fields to create a truly customized summer experience.
2018 PROGRAM DATES
The summer is organized into five blocks, you may take anywhere from one to five blocks. Students who wish to take an internship must enroll for at least two blocks:
Block I: May 2-27
Block II: May 23-June 17 (KEY 490 offered only during Block II)
Block III: June 13-July 8
Block IV: July 5-29
Block V: July 25-August 19
Applications are due March 15, 2018
Scholarships are available!
Students eligible for Summer Pell Grants, may apply the summer grant funds to this program if they attend at least two Blocks.

As we are nearing the final month of the Spring Semester, SMART (The Sexual Misconduct Awareness Raising Team) is hear to support students during this stressful time while also fundraising for future events.
Anyone, students, staff, family, and friends may order a self-care kit to send to the person(s) of their choosing. Please complete the Google order form and follow instructions listed for payment. Items available to send in the kit include fuzzy socks, sugar scrubs, slime, hand warmers, lip balm, snacks and more. All items are individually priced ranging from $.50 to $3.

Augsburg University 10th Traditional Powwow will be held Saturday, March 24 here on campus in the Si Melby Gymnasium.
Grand Entries (beginning of a dancing session) will be at 1 PM and 6 PM, however dancing/ceremony will be all day until roughly 9 PM. Honoring for Augsburg American Indian Graduates and recognition of alumni will be at 3:00 PM and Kalpulli KetzalCoatlicue Aztec Group will dance at 5:15 PM.
You are welcome to come, bring you family and friends, purchase some craft items from the array of vendors that will be present, come support our American Indian students here at Augsburg by showing up and learning about our rich culture and traditions at our hosted University Powwow.

It is a bittersweet feeling as I announce that Jill Davenport, Manager of Purchasing and Contract Services will retire Friday March 23rd after 8 1/2 years of dedicated service to Augsburg. Jill has been a wonderful Auggie working with great energy and enthusiasm! In 2016, Jill was honored with an Outstanding Staff Award for her fine work and service managing significant contract relationships for the bookstore, dining services and copy services. More recently, she facilitated a new policy to ensure that purchases were made with accessibility in mind, specifically with software purchases. I am especially grateful for Jill’s great work in stewarding the ACTC Purchasing consortium in-house at Augsburg, an important role that allowed us to keep this critical collaboration and formal engagement going forward. With only days to go, please take a moment to send Jill your good wishes for this next chapter of her journey. In a one-of-a-kind, special event: Rhonda Whiteneck, Public Affairs Specialist with the Social Security Administration will present a comprehensive look at Social Security benefits and the role they play in retirement. The presentation will include a look at how your age at retirement affects your benefits, who else is eligible to receive a benefit, and how you enroll. In addition, Rhonda will discuss Medicare Parts A, B, C and D, touching on penalties, creditable drug coverage and how Medicare affects HSA participation.

River Semester Fall 2018 – Apply Now

Students interested in a once-in- a-lifetime opportunity to travel the length of the Mississippi River as part of a full semester of courses should check out Augsburg’s River Semester program for Fall 2018. Students in the program will spend 100 days paddling from the Twin Cities, to St. Louis, Memphis, and beyond, before returning to the Twin Cities in December.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a nonprofit of Augsburg University. We provide debate programming to over 750 students in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, including our nearly 100 Spanish Debate League students.
We’re looking for debate judges for 3 tournaments this spring:
Wednesday April 19th – 3:30 to 7:30 PM
Wednesday May 3rd – 3:30 to 7:30 PM
Wednesday May 16th – 3:30 to 7:30 PM
Judges will observe rounds conducted completely in Spanish, determine winners for each round, and provide comments to help students improve their reading, critical thinking and Spanish language skills.
Participation in debate helps students improve their academic skills, including reading comprehension and critical thinking, and increases their confidence. Be a part of creating these outcomes for our Spanish Debate League students!

In 2018, Bishop Younan retired as Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land and completed his 7 year term as President of the Lutheran World Federation. Bishop Younan is a global leader in inter-religious relationships and the pursuit of a just peace between Israel and Palestine.

This community-based program includes homestays, a trip to Mexico City, optional weekend excursions, and numerous guest speakers designed to help students learn about history, culture, and contemporary struggles for peace, justice, and human rights.
Spanish language courses at all levels beginning to advanced, as well as specialized Spanish courses in Business Spanish, Spanish for Ministry, and Spanish for Healthcare Professionals can be combined with internships in those fields to create a truly customized summer experience.

The summer is organized into five blocks, you may take anywhere from one to five blocks. Students who wish to take an internship must enroll for at least two blocks:

Block II: May 23-June 17 (KEY 490 offered only during Block II)

River Semester Fall 2018 – Apply Now

Students interested in a once-in- a-lifetime opportunity to travel the length of the Mississippi River as part of a full semester of courses should check out Augsburg’s River Semester program for Fall 2018. Students in the program will spend 100 days paddling from the Twin Cities, to St. Louis, Memphis, and beyond, before returning to the Twin Cities in December.

In a one-of-a-kind, special event: Rhonda Whiteneck, Public Affairs Specialist with the Social Security Administration will present a comprehensive look at Social Security benefits and the role they play in retirement. The presentation will include a look at how your age at retirement affects your benefits, who else is eligible to receive a benefit, and how you enroll. In addition, Rhonda will discuss Medicare Parts A, B, C and D, touching on penalties, creditable drug coverage and how Medicare affects HSA participation.

Music Therapy in China: Summer study abroad program

MUSIC THERAPY IN CHINA: CHONGQING BURN CAMP
Course options:
-MUS 374, -MUS 474, or MUS 582. It also fulfills Augsburg Experience
Music therapists benefit greatly from exploring the evolution of music from one generation to the next, the way in which music is integrated into everyday life, and its role in health, healing, and well-being in China. Through visits to hospitals, clinics, musical venues, conservatories, and community organizations that provide health related care, students experience the interplay of music and healing practices in China. Students also engage in direct dialogue with Chinese music therapists and other rehabilitation therapists. The program allows participants to reflect on their own musical roots, and to discover how their own musical preferences have developed based on cultural experiences. We will also visit other locations of interest such as The Great Wall, Old-Town Beijing, Dazu Rock Carvings, Yangtze River Cruise and more.

Auggies win overseas language fellowship

Congratulations to Augsburg University’s three new Critical Language Scholars: Abdulkadir Sharif, Bri Luetkahans, and Jubilee Prosser! The CLS program is funded by the U.S. Department of State and provides 8-10 weeks of intensive overseas language study and cultural immersion in an effort to expand the number of Americans who speak languages that are critical to national security and economic prosperity.
Abdulkadir Sharif, majoring in political science: public policy/political change and international relations, minoring in history, will be traveling to Arusha Tanzania to study Kiswahili;
Bri Luetkahans, international relations major with a minor in Mandarin Chinese, will be traveling to Tainan, Taiwan to study Chinese;
Jubilee Prosser, biology major and public policy and environmental studies minor, will also be traveling to Arusha, Tanzania to study Kiswahili.

Two Augsburg Film Students will be featured at this year’s Mespies Film Festival

Winston Heckt will screen “Conversations with God” and Rebecca Schroeder will screen “Honey”. The Mespies are an annual celebration of independent film and the people who make them. Films are selected based on innovation, cinematic courage, and demonstrated ambition.
The screenings take place March 16th-March 20th at the historic Heights Theatre.

The recipient of the Marina Christensen-Justice Award must have demonstrated a dedication to the community beyond the Augsburg College campus, working in solidarity with marginalized people, as characterized by the personal and professional life of Marina Christensen-Justice. This award is given to one Augsburg senior each year at Commencement.
Nominations will be judged on the following criteria:
Depth and breadth of community involvement off-campus,
Commitment to understanding of systemic roots of the issues being addressed,
Personal and professional commitment to work with marginalized communities,
Bold and courageous leadership,
and authentic and sustained relationships with community and issues.

Our hosts represent two Native American media organizations-Vision Maker Media and MIGIZI Communications-which work with filmmakers to produce and distribute Native focused documentaries and shorts on issues important to Native American communities. The evening will include conversation and a variety of short films.

In a one-of-a-kind, special event: Rhonda Whiteneck, Public Affairs Specialist with the Social Security Administration will present a comprehensive look at Social Security benefits and the role they play in retirement. The presentation will include a look at how your age at retirement affects your benefits, who else is eligible to receive a benefit, and how you enroll. In addition, Rhonda will discuss Medicare Parts A, B, C and D, touching on penalties, creditable drug coverage and how Medicare affects HSA participation.

Auggies win overseas language fellowship

Congratulations to Augsburg University’s three new Critical Language Scholars: Abdulkadir Sharif, Bri Luetkahans, and Jubilee Prosser! The CLS program is funded by the U.S. Department of State and provides 8-10 weeks of intensive overseas language study and cultural immersion in an effort to expand the number of Americans who speak languages that are critical to national security and economic prosperity.
Abdulkadir Sharif, majoring in political science: public policy/political change and international relations, minoring in history, will be traveling to Arusha Tanzania to study Kiswahili;
Bri Luetkahans, international relations major with a minor in Mandarin Chinese, will be traveling to Tainan, Taiwan to study Chinese;
Jubilee Prosser, biology major and public policy and environmental studies minor, will also be traveling to Arusha, Tanzania to study Kiswahili.

Music Therapy in China: Summer study abroad program

MUSIC THERAPY IN CHINA: CHONGQING BURN CAMP
Course options:
-MUS 374, -MUS 474, or MUS 582. It also fulfills Augsburg Experience
Music therapists benefit greatly from exploring the evolution of music from one generation to the next, the way in which music is integrated into everyday life, and its role in health, healing, and well-being in China. Through visits to hospitals, clinics, musical venues, conservatories, and community organizations that provide health related care, students experience the interplay of music and healing practices in China. Students also engage in direct dialogue with Chinese music therapists and other rehabilitation therapists. The program allows participants to reflect on their own musical roots, and to discover how their own musical preferences have developed based on cultural experiences. We will also visit other locations of interest such as The Great Wall, Old-Town Beijing, Dazu Rock Carvings, Yangtze River Cruise and more.

All writers can use reviewers and the Writing Lab tutors are ready to help you! The lab is located in Lindell Library, street level, just left of the circulation desk. Any Augsburg student — grad or undergrad, any major — is welcome. Just bring a hard copy of whatever you are working on — essays, applications, personal statements, creative writing assignments. In 2018, Bishop Younan retired as Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land and completed his 7 year term as President of the Lutheran World Federation. Bishop Younan is a global leader in inter-religious relationships and the pursuit of a just peace between Israel and Palestine.
This event, “Interfaith Engagement: a Palestinian Christian Perspective”, will take place on Thursday, March 22nd at 7:00 PM in Oren Gateway Center Room 100.

River Semester Fall 2018 – Apply Now

Students interested in a once-in- a-lifetime opportunity to travel the length of the Mississippi River as part of a full semester of courses should check out Augsburg’s River Semester program for Fall 2018. Students in the program will spend 100 days paddling from the Twin Cities, to St. Louis, Memphis, and beyond, before returning to the Twin Cities in December.

“From Microinequities to Inclusion” is a hybrid, group-format e-learning workshop that provides an introduction to the concept of microinequities: small, often subtle expressions of bias and exclusion. Relevant to employees of all levels, participation in this workshop can positively impact all internal and external interactions. Participants explore microinequities across national cultures as well as cultures related to gender, ethnicity, language, generations, and sexual orientation, and will learn how to identify and respond to specific scenarios.
