National Voter Registration Day – Tuesday, Sept. 25

Student Affairs, Sabo Center and Student Government reps will be tabling on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 10-2 pm for National Voter Registration Day. Stop by and learn about registering to vote, where to vote, who’s on the ballot – and the “Ballot Bowl.” The Ballot Bowl is hosted by the Minnesota Secretary of State’s office, to encourage college and university students to vote! Augsburg was 4th among private colleges last time – register to vote or pledge to vote.

The never-ending showdown between Baby Boomers and Millennials will finally come to an end with the help of Augsburg’s class of 1968. Find out more about the huge, and hugely influential, generation with Homecoming 2018’s first Auggie Talk that will occur on Friday, October, 12 from 3:30pm-4:15pm in Sateren Auditorium. All are welcome!

This talk is hosted by the 50-year reunion class of 1968. Surprisingly you’ll find how much the two generations have in common! Five members of the class of 1968 will each present a 3-5 minute story of how their time at Augsburg influenced what they have done personally and professionally over the past 50 years. Each has pursued different paths since leaving Augsburg while impacting the world in meaningful ways. Topics will range from Vietnam to Social Activism to Diversity.

First-year Physics students and members of Society of Physics Students (SPS)will be gathering in the Physics Lounge, which is located in HC 130 (Hagfors Center, 1st floor, North wing), at 4:30pm to participate in a high-powered rocketry video conference.

We strongly encourage and welcome students, regardless of their major, who are interested in building/launching rockets to come join our team and participate in this conference! It will be a valuable learning experience and will provide a great opportunity for those interested in high-powered rocketry.

Fall All Hands Meeting, Thursday, September 27

The fall All Hands meeting is scheduled Thursday, September 27, at 11:30 in Hoversten Chapel. President Pribbenow will discuss fall enrollment results and discuss this year’s strategic initiatives, as well as the work to develop our next strategic plan, Augsburg2025, over the course of this year.

The meeting is open to all Augsburg staff and faculty. Remote access will be available. (The link will be provided next week.) A video replay of the meeting will be made available on the All Hands page within a few business days after the meeting for anyone not able to attend the meeting at the scheduled time.

The Center for Wellness and Counseling welcomes our community partners from the MN Visiting Nurse Association for the first of two scheduled flu shot clinics on campus. Please get your flu shot on Monday 10/1 from 10:30 – 1:00 pm in the CWC office located on the first floor of the Anderson Res Hall. Most insurances are accepted or $38 cash or check. The clinic is a walk-in clinic and no appointment is needed. Stay healthy this flu season and get your flu shot. The second clinic will be on Thursday 10/25/18.

This program will meet throughout spring semester, but much of the coursework will take place during your travel on spring break. Course options: HIS 212 Topics: Roots to Rap: Islam in America (fulfills humanities requirement), or RLN 205 Topics: Roots to Rap: Islam in America (fulfills Search for Meaning II requirement) Professor Maheen Zaman

The program cost is $1499 and covers round-trip airfare, lodging, most meals, and all program activities. There is no extra tuition charge for full-time undergraduate students.

Author Abdi Nor Iftin – Sept. 17

Abdi Nor Iftin, author of “Call Me American”, will be speaking at a Club Book event on Monday, September 17th at 7:00 PM in Hoversten Chapel. Iftin’s immigration story begins in war-torn Mogadishu, where he risked his life chronicling the rise of Islamic extremism in Somalia as an underground NPR correspondent. He narrowly escaped to a refugee camp in Kenya, where against long odds he received an invitation from the U.S. Embassy to interview for a visa in 2014. His story was the subject of a popular episode (“Abdi and the Golden Ticket”) of the radio show and podcast This American Life. This event is being sponsored by Hennepin County Library.

On Saturday, Sept. 15, from noon to 5:00 PM, the West Bank Community Development Corporation is hosting a Cedar East Neighborhood Cultural Festival and Street Sales event at 19th Ave. and 6th Street, just a few blocks from the Augsburg campus. There will be music, dancing, henna painting, art-making, a coffee ceremony, and yard sales.

The West Bank Business Association is sponsoring a Night Market on the Dania Hall site at Cedar Avenue and 5th Street on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 15 & 16) from 3 pm to 10 pm. The Nobel Peace Prize Forum begins tomorrow with Thursday workshops! Registration is still open, if you want to get tickets please visit peace.augsburg.edu
Registration begins at 7:30 am on Friday, with the plenary session starting at 9 am. Tickets are free for students, and Friday will not interfere with anyclasses!
Friday and Saturday will feature the 2017 laureate, the International Campaign Against Nuclear Weapons as well as those involved in the peace process in Colombia.

Join us for the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Forum Minneapolis on September 14 and 15, 2018.

The achievements of two Nobel Peace Prize laureates will be honored and celebrated: Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos and the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). The program will explore the tensions between conflict and reconciliation, justice and forgiveness, hope and fear—paradoxes both laureates have successfully navigated over the last few years.

Free admission for faculty, staff, and students.

Help make the Peace Meal sustainable and atmospheric

Help crowdsource candles and vases for the PEACE MEAL on September 14, 2018. The PEACE MEAL will take place during the Nobel Peace Prize Forum and is a curated experience designed to promote dialogue, reflection and human connection by sharing food around a common, collectively decorated table.

WHAT TO CONTRIBUTE?

– medium-sized vases that can hold small bouquets of flowers (any color or shape – 40 total needed)
– votive glasses to hold tea lights (clear or white glass, no colors – 200 total needed)

HOW TO CONTRIBUTE?

Membrane Biophysics Talk: Lipids as a Material for Nanomedicine

Dr. Sherry Leung (Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) will be speaking to PHY 317 on Monday, September 10, 8:00 AM, in Hagfors 109. Dr. Leung is a membrane biophysicist and will be discussing lipids as a material in nanomedicine. The talk is open to the public. Abstract below.

Abstract: Nanomedicine is the medical application of nano-sized materials and devices. Despite the numerous advances in the development of soft materials for nanomedicine, the number of systems that have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is surprisingly low. The majority of FDA approved nano-drug delivery systems are based on liposomes – a hollow spherical shell made up of a lipid bilayer. In addition to liposomes, the amphiphilic nature of lipids also allows them to self-assemble into other more complex structures. These other structures have a number of desirable properties for nanomedicine such as i) high surface-to-volume ratio, ii) capacity to encapsulate high loads of hydrophobic and hydrophilic solutes, as well as iii) membrane fusion properties that facilitate delivery. I will talk about my research on developing lipid materials for gene therapy applications.

Minnesota consistently ranks as one of the healthiest states in the nation, but those advantages don’t accrue to all. The fact is, our gap in health outcomes is among the greatest in the nation, with communities of color and American Indian communities usually facing the worst inequities. The face of Minnesota is changing. Our state will lose its healthy edge – and its way forward – if we don’t meet the needs of diverse communities and changing demographics.

Lately everyone is talking about health equity, while health inequities have been with us for generations. People experiencing inequities are often blamed for their predicaments, while health inequities are often caused by unfair treatment and systemic injustices such as structural and institutional racism.

Rosemond Sarpong Owens makes a compelling and urgent case for building equity into policies and practice. With her wide-ranging experience in public health, health equity and cultural competency, Rosemond brings a multifaceted perspective to this issue. She will provide insight on the many promising practices that can combat health inequities, including how Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota has created tools to embed equity in its policies and practices.

In this session, attendees will:
• Obtain a shared definition of health equity      
• Understand what causes health inequities
• Understand strategies for advancing health equity   
• Discuss effective resources and strategies in providing culturally competent care, including the LEARN Model

Help crowdsource candles and vases for the PEACE MEAL on September 14, 2018. The PEACE MEAL will take place during the Nobel Peace Prize Forum and is a curated experience designed to promote dialogue, reflection and human connection by sharing food around a common, collectively decorated table.

WHAT TO CONTRIBUTE?

– medium-sized vases that can hold small bouquets of flowers (any color or shape – 40 total needed)
– votive glasses to hold tea lights (clear or white glass, no colors – 200 total needed)

The 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Forum will be held at Augsburg University on September 14th-15th. Tickets are free for anyone with an Augsburg ID number. To get tickets, you can visit our website peace.augsburg.edu, and ticket links will be on the front page (you may have to scroll down). Remember ALL classes will take place at the Forum on Friday, September 14.

If you have a student ID, click on “Augsburg University Community” option. Then, log in using your Augsburg login, this is located on the top right of the page. There will be ticket options for Friday and Saturday, just Friday or just Saturday. Students and faculty can attend both days for free!

On Friday the 14th the Peace Meal and Arts Festival will take place in the Quad from 5:00 pm – 10:00 pm. South Africa event in Hagfors: An evening of music, food, and conversation

To mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Nelson Mandela, the Center for Global Education & Experience (CGEE) and Global Minnesota are co-hosting a “Year of South Africa” event in the Hagfors atrium on Thursday evening, September 6, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. All Augsburg faculty, staff, and students are invited.

The president of Global Minnesota recently traveled with an Augsburg group to CGEE’s South African program sites, a visit that coincided with a Minnesota Trade Office mission to South Africa and a well-publicized tour by the Minnesota Orchestra, the Minnesota Chorale, and Minnesota Public Radio. We expect that people from all these contingents will join the event, making for a lively atmosphere. President Pribbenow and the South African consul general are also expected to attend.

Opening Convocation & Kick–Off Lunch

Opening Convocation is the kick–off to the 2018 academic year and welcomes first-year students to campus. The student processional will begin from Murphy Square park at 9:45am and Convocation begins at 10am in the chapel. Faculty and staff are invited to line-up by 9:45 a.m. outside of Foss to form a tunnel to welcome this year’s incoming class. Faculty robe for this event and process after students. Very limited seating may be available in the chapel for those not involved in AugSems. If seating is not available in the chapel, overflow seating and a live video feed of the convocation will be available in Sateren Auditorium.

The campus community is also invited to join the AugSems for a kick–off luncheon in the quad from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The lunch will feature food stations, games & activities, and live music. All are invited.
