In this circle talk series, we will be discussing different topics regarding the student body, specifically black-identifying students. The purpose is to educate and create a community on campus in accordance with Augsburg’s mission. Prepare to engage and collaborate with others as we find ways to uplift members of our Augsburg community.

This is a new dialogue series, so please come and show your support! Stay tuned as they will happen once a month during the fall and spring semesters. Pan-Afrikan Student Services will be collaborating with other campus partners to be sure we are reaching members of our close-knit community.

Our first event will take place on September 28, 2022, at Riverside Room from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm

Gabby will share about Orange Shirt Day, a day when we honor the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada and the United States. It is a national day of remembrance of the residential boarding school experience in which we witness and honor the healing journey of survivors and their families and commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation of Indian Boarding Schools.

Join us in Hoversten Chapel at 10:40 am on Friday for the Blessing of the Animals service as we celebrate St. Francis of Assisi, Patron Saint of Animals. Our service will include a lively blessing ritual of animals and pets to honor St. Francis’ devotion to all God’s creatures and a slideshow of pets. If you wish to have a photo of your pet included in the slideshow, please send it to Janice Dames at dames@augsburg.edu by Thursday at 3:00 pm. Jennifer Troy of Paws for Learning will join us with her therapy animals, and Ellen Weber, Christensen Center for Vocation Operations Program Associate, will offer a message. Bring your pet or therapy or emotional support animal (or a photo of them) for a blessing on Friday. All are welcome!

IT’S HAPPENING!

The new addition to our Norway House campus will be ready for public viewing on October 15, 2022! And rumors has it, Queen Sonja of Norway will be the Guest of Honor.

To celebrate, Norway House is hosting a big, family-friendly block party and ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event is free (food and drink for purchase) and open to the public, and they especially excited to see YOU there!

Enjoy great food, kids’ activities, music, and plenty of special guests, including the Norwegian Ambassador to the United States, Her Excellency Anniken Krutnes. We’ll even unveil a new sculpture!

This year, ten Augsburg LS-NSSA Scholars that conducted research this past summer will be presenting their research posters. Everyone in the Augsburg community is welcome (and encouraged!) to attend.

The Cedar Riverside Multicultural Dinner will be held on Thursday, September 22 from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM in Currie Park, adjacent to the Brian Coyle Community Center. Food from a variety of local restaurants will be featured. There will be performances celebrating the diverse cultures of Cedar Riverside. The Multicultural Dinner is an annual event intended to bring together people from all corners of the Cedar Riverside neighborhood to share a meal, celebrate the diversity of the neighborhood, and build community. Faculty, students, and staff are invited to a reception this Friday, September 23, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM in Hagfors 150. The Center for Global Education and Experience (CGEE) and Global Minnesota are co-hosting the event, which will welcome Ambassador Ross Wilson and international journalists from the U.S. Department of State’s Edward R. Murrow program.

Mr. Wilson is the former United States ambassador to Turkey and Azerbaijan and was the chargé d’affaires to Afghanistan until the U.S. Embassy in Kabul transferred operations to Qatar in August 2021.

The Edward R. Murrow journalists come from Armenia, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Croatia, Ethiopia, Iraq, Laos, Lebanon, Liberia, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Singapore, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. While in Minnesota, they will examine press freedom in the United States, the role of journalism in a democracy, and the ways that new technologies shape how news is gathered, reported, distributed, and consumed.

Though there will be a short informal presentation, this event is primarily for socializing and networking. Hors d’oeuvres and nonalcoholic beverages will be served. Please email mulvihil@augsburg.edu to RSVP by September 22 at 1:00 PM.

Rabbi Justin Held, Director of Jewish Education at Minnesota Hillel, will speak in Hoversten chapel today at 10:40 am. He will be introduced by Fardosa Hassan, Muslim Student Program Associate and Assistant Director of Interfaith at Augsburg, and Holly Farber, co-director of the Jewish Community Relations Council’s Speakers Bureau, will speak in chapel.

Rabbi Justin “JP” Held grew up in Plymouth, Minnesota. He attended the University of Kansas where he studied religion and Judaism. Following graduation, Rabbi Justin served as the engagement associate at MN Hillel from 2014-2015. Justin then embarked on his rabbinic journey at Hebrew College in Newton, Massachusetts. While in rabbinical school, Rabbi Justin worked as the Rabbinic Intern at Boston University Hillel, as well as taught at Reform and Reconstructionist Hebrew schools. Rabbi Justin was ordained by the Hebrew College Rabbinical School in May of 2021, where he also received a master’s degree in Jewish Education. Rabbi Justin is entering his second year as the Director of Jewish Education at MN Hillel and Herzl Camp.

Representatives from MPS -Community Education and Adult Programs will be on campus in the lobby of the Christensen Center on Tuesday, 9/20 from 10:30am – 12:30pm. Stop by and learn about part-time employment, internship, and volunteer opportunities within Minneapolis Community Education’s Youth and Adult programs.

Their mission is to engage youth, adults, and families, in a wide variety of enriching, lifelong learning opportunities. They have a number of positions located within schools, especially as part of their after school programs with young people. Additionally, there are occasional positions available in adult enrichment programming, programming with individuals with different abilities, and in our aquatics program.

Faculty, students, and staff are invited to a reception this Friday, September 23, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM in Hagfors 150. The Center for Global Education and Experience (CGEE) and Global Minnesota are co-hosting the event, which will welcome Ambassador Ross Wilson and international journalists from the U.S. Department of State’s Edward R. Murrow program.

Mr. Wilson is the former United States ambassador to Turkey and Azerbaijan and was the chargé d’affaires to Afghanistan until the U.S. Embassy in Kabul transferred operations to Qatar in August 2021.

The Edward R. Murrow journalists come from Armenia, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Croatia, Ethiopia, Iraq, Laos, Lebanon, Liberia, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Singapore, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. While in Minnesota, they will examine press freedom in the United States, the role of journalism in a democracy, and the ways that new technologies shape how news is gathered, reported, distributed, and consumed.

Kristen shared some bittersweet news – she has accepted a new role at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School as their Vice President for Development. I’m excited to see how Kristen lives out her vocational calling in ways that benefit their compelling mission.

In this role, Kristen will be leading their efforts in fundraising, advancement services and alumni relations. She’s particularly excited about opportunities to work with local corporations and foundations, as well as their president, who just began this summer.

The Cedar Riverside Multicultural Dinner will be held on Thursday, September 22 from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM in Currie Park, adjacent to the Brian Coyle Community Center. Join Campus Ministry and the Center for Wellness in Counseling today in Hoversten Chapel at 10:40 am in this interfaith time of community connection and shared healing at the outset of this academic year. Over the last two and a half years, the COVID-19 pandemic has generated deep loss among us and within our communities. We have witnessed the tragic loss of life on account of this disease around the globe, and some in our Augsburg community have experienced it intimately within their own circles of loved ones. We have also lost time and connection having navigated the complexities of lock-down, isolation, and ongoing social distancing. We have lost opportunities, hopes, and for many, a sense of security and wellbeing. These losses have taken their toll emotionally, physically, mentally.
We as community will offer a time to publicly name our loss and seek healing pathways as we journey together as an Augsburg community. Our gathering will offer words of reflection alongside space for quiet and song. Every participant will have an opportunity to mark their own loss as another step on healing’s path. All are welcome.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League (MNUDL) is a program of Augsburg University which provides academic competitive debate programming to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities Metro. Join us at the American Swedish Institute from 5:00 PM-7:45 PM on 9/22 for a showcase debate, performed by our students, on the topic of NATO and the Nordic Countries.

Her Excellency Ambassador of Sweden, Karin Olofsdotter, and Torleiv Opland, Deputy Chief of Mission, Norwegian Embassy in Washington D.C., will join and speak with us virtually. They’ll be joined in person by other VIPs at our 10th Anniversary of the Mayors Challenge: The Great NATO Debate, including Governor Tim Walz & First Lady Gwen Walz (confirmed), Mayor Jacob Frey (confirmed), and Mayor Melvin W. Carter III (invited), and our emcee, MPR News Senior Reporter Nina Moini (our emcee).

We will also hear from Jake Sullivan, National Security Advisor of the United States, virtually as he accepts his 2022 Champion of Change Award.

Kristen shared some bittersweet news—she has accepted a new role at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School as their Vice President for Development. I’m excited to see how Kristen lives out her vocational calling in ways that benefit their compelling mission.

In this role, Kristen will be leading their efforts in fundraising, advancement services and alumni relations. She’s particularly excited about opportunities to work with local corporations and foundations, as well as their president, who just began this summer.

Kristen plans for September 20 to be her last day. Please join me in congratulating Kristen on Tue Sep 20, 2022 3pm – 4pm in OGC 300.

Please join us in Hoversten Chapel at 11:30 am for a service of morning prayer. During this service we will also install our campus ministry musician Brian De Young. Brian De Young (he/him) joins Augsburg University after many years in church music ministry in congregations in Iowa, Michigan, and Minnesota. In addition to his role in Campus Ministry, he currently serves as the Director of Music at Olivet Congregational Church in St. Paul. With a bachelor’s degree in organ performance and graduate education in both church music and piano performance, Brian is a musician of broad skills and wide-ranging interests. Outside of Augsburg he may be seen performing classical chamber music, singing Renaissance and Baroque choral music, playing in a theatre pit orchestra, or on keys at a Twin Cities Tango Collective event. He lives in South Minneapolis with his partner Alena, daughters Nina and Elisabeth, and rescue mutt Copper.

The Louis Stokes North Star STEM Alliance (LS-NSSA) Kickoff is an annual event for undergraduate students in the sciences to share their research projects, explore career and internship opportunities, and network with other STEM students, faculty and professionals. This year, ten Augsburg LS-NSSA Scholars that conducted research this past summer will be presenting their research posters. Everyone in the Augsburg community is welcome (and encouraged!) to attend.

The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) is an initiative funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF Grant #1712619) which is intended to double the number of African-American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Alaska Native, and Pacific Islander students receiving baccalaureate degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in a five-year period. In Minnesota, the LSAMP program is called the Louis Stokes North Star STEM Alliance (LS-NSSA). LS-NSSA is a partnership of 16 higher education institutions and 3 community partners in Minnesota.

We’re excited to announce a new on campus meeting for anyone in recovery (of any form), curious about recovery, or have loved ones who struggle with any form of addiction. It is hosted by StepUp students, but is in no way limited to only StepUp students or people with specifically substance abuse issues. This isn’t tied to AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) or NA (Narcotics Anonymous), it’s our own format and is completely fluid. We’re open to suggestions of any ways to better the meeting. Our focus is on providing a place to constructively process issues and work on spiritual development, whatever that may look like.
