Student debt is no longer just a burden—it’s become a barrier to the American Dream. Minnesota ranks fifth in the nation for student debt, with the average student debt load at $30,894 for state college students. Education Minnesota, the state teachers’ union, wants to help relieve your debt burden and make college more affordable and accessible to all. This is particularly important for our public schools. If teaching becomes an unaffordable profession, it will become even more difficult to attract and retain high-quality educators.

Today at 4:00pm the Augsburg community is invited for a celebration as we “flip the switch” on the first solar-powered building on campus. The demonstration project, funded by the student-led Environmental Action Committee and dubbed a “Unit of Resistance,” is a small work shed located on the south side of campus. The structure has a 2 kiloWatt solar array on its roof and a battery bank and power system that can be used for powering tools and other projects in this outdoor maker space. The blue shed with a bright red door (hard to miss) is located for now where 21st Avenue dead-ends at the freeway wall, at the west end of Lot B. After the system is turned on there will be some food, socializing, discussion of other ways to reduce Augsburg’s carbon footprint, and of other creative projects students can participate in.

The Louis Stokes North Star STEM Alliance (LS-NSSA) Kickoff is an annual event for undergraduate students in the sciences to share their research projects, explore career and internship opportunities, and network with other STEM students, faculty and professionals. This year, ten Augsburg LS-NSSA Scholars that conducted research this past summer will be presenting their research posters. Everyone in the Augsburg community is welcome (and encouraged!) to attend.

The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) is an initiative funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF Grant #1712619) which is intended to double the number of African-American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Alaska Native, and Pacific Islander students receiving baccalaureate degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in a five-year period. In Minnesota, the LSAMP program is called the Louis Stokes North Star STEM Alliance (LS-NSSA). LS-NSSA is a partnership of 16 higher education institutions and 3 community partners in Minnesota.

The Gilman Scholarship is a study abroad scholarship of up to several thousand dollars! It’s a competitive scholarship, but Auggies have a good track record of being awarded. Come to the Gilman Scholarship info sessions/workshop to learn more about study abroad, the scholarship, and tips for submitting a competitive application.

To be eligible for the Gilman Scholarship, a student must be a U.S. citizen, and receive a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or during the term of the study abroad program or internship.
Gilman Scholarship applications are ***due October 6*** for study abroad programs in: Spring 2023, Summer 2023, Fall 2023, or Academic Year 2023-2024
