The Augsburg Music Dept in collaboration with MacPhail and Campus Ministry invites you to share virtually with the FIFTH HOUSE ENSEMBLE.

WE ARE GOOD:
5-consecutive, 90-minute sessions; Deep Listening and story gathering rooted in collective decision making through creative acts. Fosters authentic inquiry among participants of varied social and political backgrounds, uses Deep Listening to bring strangers together through communal music-making. Each session culminates in a creative act, including the development of new text scores, graphic scores, or other work products.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming for middle and high students in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Roseville.

Our all-virtual middle school debate season has begun, and we need judges to help make it happen! No experience is required. We will train you!

By judging, you can help students gain critical thinking skills, public speaking experience, and confidence as they analyze multiple angles of this year’s debate topic, police reform.

That said, it’s become dangerous to talk about politics at work even though the political divide now more than ever inhibits positive connection, at work, at home, and in our communities. This divide threatens progress towards more diverse and equitable workplaces.
Now, amidst this divisiveness, is the opportunity for workplaces to double down and equip their leaders on how to bridge the divide. There is no time to waste.

Fifth House Ensemble will partner with Augsburg University to work with students from the school of music, the McPhail Music Center, and the Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship for a semester-long residency focused on community and co-creation. Campus Ministry invites students to participate in an Alternative Spring Break experience March 15-19, 2021, offering the students an opportunity to look deeper at justice issues in the Twin Cities and surrounding area and engage in meaningful, relationship-centered volunteer work.
The justice issues will be examined through several experiences in the Twin Cities and reflection and sharing in order for participants to process their experience communally and individually. These experiences include:
MN Council of Churches Sacred Sites Tour, exploring MN history through a Native lens by visiting sacred sites and through storytelling.
A presentation and activities by the University of MN Mapping Prejudice project, exploring housing inequity due to racial disparities.
A presentation and activities by the Lutheran Social Service of MN (LSS-MN) Advocacy team, providing practical and current information on ways to be advocates.
Activities are subject to change due to COVID-19 protocols.
For volunteer opportunities, students will partner with LSS-MN at Supported Living Homes (SLH), known as ‘group homes.’ SLH provides a family home setting to no more than 4 community members living with differing abilities.
Students will serve in small groups at several homes. Activities may include yard work, building maintenance, meal prep, and social activities alongside those who live in the home. Volunteer work will focus on the relational aspect of volunteering, rather than the actual jobs accomplished. Volunteer activities are designed to help volunteers and residents see one another as individuals rather than ‘other.’
This ASB has been approved to count as an Augsburg Experience. Please indicate on the registration form if you would like that option.
Cost: $25, including the required book & lunch each of the 5 days. Please fill out the registration form & turn in your fee to Janice Dames in the Campus Ministry office.

“The Nordic countries have a proud history of firmly embracing the complexities of gender equality. With this common voice of urgency, you are invited to a space where bold, creative and distinctive female voices are examined, amplified and celebrated.”

During five weeks between February 2 and March 3, you can watch five films from across the Nordic countries, meet their directors and host five conversations with Nordic and American filmmakers. This is all made possible by the Women In Film and Television International (WIFTI) organization.

Themes range from inconvenient women to borderless filmmaking, from women who define their own reality to those making our blood boil. Meet Sundance-winner Ísold Uggadóttir, May el-Toukhy, Oscar-contenders Zaida Bergroth and Maria Søhdahl and Samí-director Suvi West; award-winning actresses Sofia Helin, Trine Dyrholm; and many more.

The film uplifts the voices of Minnesotan artists, scholars, and community members who have been historically and negatively impacted by these injustices, through a collection of interviews, music, and poetry.

We will be discussing options best fit for STEM majors with guest presentation by our partners at the School for Field Studies (SFS) as well as Biology and Environmental Studies faculty member, Emily Schilling (who studied abroad in Madagascar!) on Wednesday, January 27th at 10:30 a.m.

About SFS: “When you study abroad with SFS, you’re contributing to a legacy of environmental research and stewardship that spans more than 40 years, encompassing countries as diverse as Cambodia, Kenya, andCosta Rica. Our team of experienced research scientists will push you to get creative as you work to understand the critical environmental issues of our time.”

Fifth House will work directly with composition students to develop their works and provide guidance through entrepreneurship workshops focusing on life outside of school.

Imam El-Amin leads Al Maa’uun (Neighborly Needs) Community Outreach Services that addresses food insecurity, affordable housing, career services, and mentoring.
Lori Brandt Hale is Professor and Chair of Religion and Philosophy at Augsburg University, where she has taught since 1998. Brandt Hale has devoted her academic career both to teaching and to studying the life and legacy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
Rabbi Arielle LeKach-Rosenberg serves as Assistant Rabbi at Shir Tikvah with a focus on music, prayer and activism. She was ordained by the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College in June 2017. In collaboration with the Augsburg Music Department, Campus Ministry is excited to welcome the Fifth House Ensemble to chapel as part of their residency at Augsburg for a 5-part series of Deep Listening. Fifth House Ensemble taps the collaborative spirit of chamber music to create engaging performances and interactive educational programs, forging meaningful partnerships with unexpected venues, artists of other disciplines, educational institutions, and audiences of every type. Fifth House Ensemble will be leading chapel on January 28 & 29, and February 2, 4 & 5. The services will be live streamed on Zoom..

Make A Difference for Middle Schoolers! Judge Virtual Criminal Justice Reform Debates This Spring

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide debate programming to middle & high school students in the Twin Cities. We are still providing middle school debate tournaments during COVID-19 pandemic – virtually! We need volunteers to make it happen.

You can judge tournaments from home. No experience required. Sign up today!

This year, middle school debate tournaments will be split into separate dates for rookie & novice (for new debaters) and JV & varsity (experienced debaters) divisions. You are welcome to judge either division, but if you’ve never debated before, it may be helpful to try a Rookie & Novice tournament first. No experience is needed to judge! We will train you virtually.

Campus Ministry invites students to participate in an Alternative Spring Break experience March 15-19, 2021, offering the students an opportunity to look deeper at justice issues in the Twin Cities and surrounding area and engage in meaningful, relationship-centered volunteer work.
The justice issues will be examined through several experiences in the Twin Cities and reflection and sharing in order for participants to process their experience communally and individually. These experiences include:
-MN Council of Churches Sacred Sites Tour, exploring MN history through a Native lens by visiting sacred sites and through storytelling.
-Presentation & activities by the University of MN Mapping Prejudice project, exploring housing inequity due to racial disparities.
-Presentation & activities by the Lutheran Social Service of MN (LSS-MN) Advocacy team, providing practical and current information on ways to be advocates.
Activities are subject to change due to COVID-19 protocols.
For volunteer opportunities, students will partner with LSS-MN at Supported Living Homes (SLH), known as ‘group homes.’ SLH provides a family home setting to no more than 4 community members living with differing abilities.
Students will serve in small groups at several homes. Activities may include yard work, building maintenance, meal prep, and social activities alongside those who live in the home. Volunteer work will focus on the relational aspect of volunteering, rather than the actual jobs accomplished. Volunteer activities are designed to help volunteers and residents see one another as individuals rather than ‘other.’
This ASB has been approved to count as an Augsburg Experience. Please indicate on the registration form if you would like that option.
Cost: $25, including the required book & lunch each of the 5 days. Please fill out the registration form & turn in your fee to Janice Dames in the Campus Ministry office.

Make A Difference for Middle Schoolers! Judge Virtual Criminal Justice Reform Debates This Spring

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide debate programming to middle & high school students in the Twin Cities. We are still providing middle school debate tournaments during COVID-19 pandemic – virtually! We need volunteers to make it happen.

You can judge tournaments from home. No experience required. Sign up today!

This year, middle school debate tournaments will be split into separate dates for rookie & novice (for new debaters) and JV & varsity (experienced debaters) divisions. You are welcome to judge either division, but if you’ve never debated before, it may be helpful to try a Rookie & Novice tournament first. No experience is needed to judge! We will train you virtually.

Imam Makram El-Amin has worked for more than two decades as a religious and community leader, firmly rooted in the principle of our inherent human dignity. Imam El-Amin leads Al Maa’uun (Neighborly Needs) Community Outreach Services that addresses food insecurity, affordable housing, career services, and mentoring.
Lori Brandt Hale is Professor and Chair of Religion and Philosophy at Augsburg University, where she has taught since 1998. Brandt Hale has devoted her academic career both to teaching and to studying the life and legacy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
Rabbi Arielle LeKach-Rosenberg serves as Assistant Rabbi at Shir Tikvah with a focus on music, prayer and activism. She was ordained by the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College in June 2017. She spent her final two years of rabbinical school working as a full-time rabbinic fellow at B’nai Jeshurun in New York City.

Farhan Latif is a philanthropic leader, social entrepreneur and cross sector mobilizer on minority inclusion. He is the President of the El-Hibri Foundation, focused on cross sector approaches to foster inclusion across religious and political divides.

Imam Makram El-Amin has worked for more than two decades as a religious and community leader, firmly rooted in the principle of our inherent human dignity. Imam El-Amin leads Al Maa’uun (Neighborly Needs) Community Outreach Services that addresses food insecurity, affordable housing, career services, and mentoring.
Lori Brandt Hale is Professor and Chair of Religion and Philosophy at Augsburg University, where she has taught since 1998. Brandt Hale has devoted her academic career both to teaching and to studying the life and legacy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
Rabbi Arielle LeKach-Rosenberg serves as Assistant Rabbi at Shir Tikvah with a focus on music, prayer and activism. She was ordained by the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College in June 2017. She spent her final two years of rabbinical school working as a full-time rabbinic fellow at B’nai Jeshurun in New York City.

After months of work and collaboration in the fall, Theater Department is proud to announce the release of At a Glance, a project devised by a four-person ensemble with direction from Atlese Robinson, Eshay Brantley, and Malick Ceesay of Ambiance Theatre Company. At a Glance provides varying perspectives on what it feels like to be a young woman of color in today’s world. Edited by Augsburg alumni Nia Ross, this filmed production will be released on Youtube on January 15th. Keep an eye out for the link–you don’t want to miss it!
