During his more than eight-year employment at Augsburg, Joe has been exceptional at tackling complex problems, thinking strategically about what’s best in the current moment, and developing solutions that will be sustainable for the long term. Joe’s strength in troubleshooting, attention to detail, and clear communication will be tremendous assets for Equisoft. Black Men Teach is looking to recruit and develop a cohort of Black men who are either actively considering a career in elementary education or are open to the idea. The men in the Black Men Teach college cohort may be eligible to receive various forms of support throughout the remainder of their collegiate journey and into their professional careers. Benefits of cohort membership include:
1:1 Mentorship with current black male teacher
Paid classroom internship during studies
Paid stipend for student teaching
Access to community of Black Male college students
Summer work opportunities
Scholarship opportunities

To be eligible for the Black Men Teach program, you must be enrolled in a college or university in the Greater Twin Cities Metropolitan area, identity as a Black male, and have an interest in finding a career filled with purpose fulfillment. You DO NOT need to be studying education or on a path to becoming a teacher.

Our college cohort meeting will take place virtually on Tuesday, October 20 at 6:30PM and will feature teacher, author, and artist, Dwayne Reed. Mr. Dwayne Reed has been featured on Rapzilla, ABC 7 Chicago and Good Morning America. Attendees will also receive a $25 virtual gift card.

The Capitol Pathways Internship Program is  run by the Citizens League and is a PAID spring internship (January – May 2021) for college students who identify as Black, Indigenous or a person of color. Students will be paid a minimum of $15/hr and work a minimum of 10hrs/week throughout the internship period.

About Capitol Pathways:
With the long-term goal of making our government truly representative of our communities, the program opens access to the Minnesota Capitol to the next generation BIPOC leaders. Through this program, interns build relationships with established Capitol leaders, learn about the legislative process, gain exposure to various careers in policy and build a strong professional resume in the process. This is a program that provides students legislative, leadership and professional development training (with a cohort of up to 25 other students) alongside an immersive hands-on internship experience.

For much of history, humans have grappled with questions of meaning and belonging within institutions like churches and civic groups. Today, especially in the time of social distancing and online learning, more and more people are moving their search for connection and significance into digital space. The work of being human — exploring life’s big questions, finding a sense of identity and context, and connecting with others — increasingly happens on the internet. How is this changing our understanding of who we are? Join Augsburg University alum and current adjunct professor in Augsburg’s Department of Religion and Philosophy Chris Stedman for a conversation about his new book IRL: Finding Realness, Meaning, and Belonging in Our Digital Lives (out October 20, 2020), what it means to be “real” in the age of Twitter and TikTok, and what we can learn from the novel ways of being and belonging that are emerging online.

The lecture will feature a presentation by Chris Stedman followed by a time of Q & A. This is a free event, open to students, staff and faculty. Registration required at webinar link provided. After registering, participants will receive a link to connect to the event.

Chris Stedman is a Minneapolis-based writer, speaker, teacher, and community organizer. He is the author of IRL: Finding Realness, Meaning, and Belonging in Our Digital Lives (2020) and Faitheist: How an Atheist Found Common Ground with the Religious (2012). Chris has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, and PBS.
Previously the founding director of the Yale Humanist Community and a fellow at Yale University, Chris also served as a humanist chaplain at Harvard University. He currently teaches in the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Augsburg and serves as the Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities’ 2020-21 visiting lecturer.

The Biden-Harris campaign is renting space from Augsburg today for a Get Out the Vote event for college students featuring Jill Biden. This is an invitation-only event (invitations were determined by the campaign team), and all those attending will adhere to Augsburg’s symptom screening, physical distancing, and face covering requirements.

The campaign team will be setting up in the quad beginning early this morning. Security will be provided by the Secret Service, who have engaged the Minneapolis Police Department for support.

The campaign will be putting up barriers around the portion of the quad that will be used for the event; Auggies crossing the quad will need to stay on the perimeter. The doors on the quad to Sverdrup Hall, Science Hall, and Christensen Center will remain available for fob access. Memorial Hall will not be open for the day. Those with offices in Memorial have already been notified by email.

The event will begin at 12:45 p.m. If you’re not on the invitation list and are able to do so, please avoid the quad area during this time.

For much of history, humans have grappled with questions of meaning and belonging within institutions like churches and civic groups. Today, especially in the time of social distancing and online learning, more and more people are moving their search for connection and significance into digital space. The work of being human — exploring life’s big questions, finding a sense of identity and context, and connecting with others — increasingly happens on the internet. How is this changing our understanding of who we are? Join Augsburg University alum and current adjunct professor in Augsburg’s Department of Religion and Philosophy Chris Stedman for a conversation about his new book IRL: Finding Realness, Meaning, and Belonging in Our Digital Lives (out October 20, 2020), what it means to be “real” in the age of Twitter and TikTok, and what we can learn from the novel ways of being and belonging that are emerging online.

The lecture will feature a presentation by Chris Stedman followed by a time of Q & A. This is a free event, open to students, staff and faculty. Registration required at webinar link provided. After registering, participants will receive a link to connect to the event.

Chris Stedman is a Minneapolis-based writer, speaker, teacher, and community organizer. He is the author of IRL: Finding Realness, Meaning, and Belonging in Our Digital Lives (2020) and Faitheist: How an Atheist Found Common Ground with the Religious (2012). Chris has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, and PBS.
Previously the founding director of the Yale Humanist Community and a fellow at Yale University, Chris also served as a humanist chaplain at Harvard University. He currently teaches in the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Augsburg and serves as the Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities’ 2020-21 visiting lecturer.

Join Augsburg University alum and current adjunct professor in Augsburg’s Department of Religion and Philosophy Chris Stedman for a conversation about his new book IRL: Finding Realness, Meaning, and Belonging in Our Digital Lives (out October 20, 2020), what it means to be “real” in the age of Twitter and TikTok, and what we can learn from the novel ways of being and belonging that are emerging online.

A panel discussion with several college and university students will be the focus of this Oct. 6 session. Students will speak openly about the impact of COVID-19 on their lives (i.e. personal, external, institutional, and in terms of their aspirations). Hosted by MDH, the webinar is being organized by the Workgroup on COVID-19 Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Higher Education; this is one of several workgroups that MDH has helped form since this spring to bring higher education staff together to address various aspects of planning to address COVID-19. This workgroup has been reviewing what best practices institutions should be considering, given the disparities in COVID-19’s impact on different racial and ethnic groups. It is also developing research plans.
The panel discussion with students will be facilitated by members of the workgroup, including Jesse Mason, Ph.D. Provost at North Hennepin Community College; Cruz Rodriguez, Assistant Director, Augsburg University TRIO McNair Scholars Program; and Angela Witte, Program Coordinator in Multicultural Student Services at Saint Cloud State University.

We will walk in the footsteps of Malcolm X on our tour of Muslim Harlem as we study the vast diversity of Black Muslim traditions – Nation of Islam, Sunni Black Muslims, West African businesses, and Latinx Muslims of East Harlem. At New York University’s nationally acclaimed Islamic Center, located in the Village, we will observe the Friday prayer in the context of a campus community integrated with its surrounding professional workforce.

Beyond these two sites in Manhattan, we will venture out to Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx to learn from organizers and advocates of immigration rights and civil liberties, investigate the process of social disappearance of working class Muslims in the face of gentrification, conduct oral histories as paired researchers across the five boroughs, sit with disciples of a female Sufi master and experience the ambiance of their spiritual practice, visit the museums of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art to critically compare natural and cultural representation of Islam and Muslims, take a ferry ride to Elis Island, Statue of Liberty, and compare that immigration narrative with the memories of exclusion curated at the Museum of the Chinese in America, and so much more.

We are experiencing amplified division and chaos around concepts central to diversity, equity and inclusion: Anti-racism and white privilege are becoming increasingly politicized, especially as the US prepares itself for the upcoming Presidential election.

How does this resistance show up in your workplace and in your DEI initiatives? How do we continue to bridge divides that seem to be increasingly polarized? And, how will you prepare your workplace for the aftermath of the election, whatever the outcome?

The Riverside Winds will present a concert of music by composers from all five Scandinavian countries. This concert is presented by the Edvard Grieg Society of MN and will be streamed live from Sateren Auditorium on Friday, October 2 at 7:30 p.m.
