This summer, the Sabo Center is hosting the Place-Based Justice Network Summer Institute, a national conference for higher education institutions committed to transforming higher education and our communities through place-based community engagement.

We are seeking TWO student workers to provide support before and during the conference event as Summer Conference Hosts/Detail Managers.

Essential job functions include, but are not limited to:

*Work with Sabo staff to prepare materials for the conference.
*Manage registration tables, welcome and assist conference participants with on-campus housing and other details.
*Help direct participants during transitions and be responsive to their needs.
*Take photos at event and post to social media.

This is a short term job with hours as follows:
During the week of July 1-5, 10-15 flexible hours
During the week of July 8-12, 40 hours, less flexible. (must be available 8am-8pm on July 10-11 and 8am-4pm on July 12)

Augsburg Athletics and the HPE Department have partnered with The Sports Bra Project to create the first ever, Augsburg Sports Bra Drive. Utilizing networks of organizations to collect and distribute sports bras, The Sports Bra Project works to eliminate one barrier of participation and increase the access to sports for girls and women around the world.

How can you help?
– Donate a new & unused sports bra of any size!
– We will be collecting donated sports bras until April 17th.
– A collection bin is located in the main athletic office in Si Melby Hall (across from the gym).

Our goal is to collect over 100 sports bras! We have received 64 donated bras already!! We are over half way to our goal and this is the last week to donate!
Please consider helping us reach our goal and supporting such an important and impactful cause!

Staff Senate is seeking nominations for the Auggie Pride Award! The Auggie Pride Award is given to staff members who have gone above and beyond to serve Augsburg and fulfill its mission and values. Reasons to acknowledge a staff member can include a variety of things, such as the completion of a project, the implementation of an innovative idea, or simply giving directions to a lost campus guest.

Staff Senate is grateful for the 3-year term that elected UC staff representative, Jim Trelstad-Porter has served. As his term comes to an end we are beginning the election process for the next elected UC staff representative.

The overall Council structure is an outcome of the Shared Governance Report released in 2014. The goal is to establish advocates with deep institutional knowledge from across the campus community to provide recommendations on issues that affect the University’s commitment to its mission and values.

The selection process for the University Council Staff Representative begins with an open call for nominations from April 15–22. Nominations are received electronically from any eligible voting staff members. Self-nominations, nomination of others, and nominations for Staff Senate members are acceptable.

Our goal is to donate to the Ceder Riverside Community School and the Sports Check it Out program. Last year we donated over 100 items. Shamsa Ahmed, who is majoring in Political Science and is a TRIO SSS participant and Act 6 Scholar, just received the prestigious Boren Award Scholarship under the African Flagship Initiative Program. Through this award, Shamsa may spend 8 weeks this summer with a cohort of learners studying Swahili at the University of Florida, followed by 4 months of intensive Swahili language study and cultural immersion in Tanzania. All of her expenses will be paid and she will earn 24 credits. Shamsa was also awarded a Critical Language Scholarship this year!

Boren is established to teach American students less commonly taught languages and cultures in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad. After graduation, Shamsa will spend at least one year of paid employment in the federal government. She would ultimately like to work for USAID in foreign service. Boren recipients receive Schedule A hiring authority, which gives them preference when applying to federal positions.

Boren Scholarships can be for a 6 months to a year of study abroad or can be an 8-week summer study abroad if you are a STEM major.

* Requisitions Officer – This officer acts as a treasurer to submit grant requests, room requests, and help manage the group finances.
* e-Gaming Officer – As the name implies, this officer specializes in organizing console and PC meetings, events, and tournaments.
* Public Relations Officer – This officer would help our event officers to advertise their events via A-mail, Screens, our Facebook Group, creating posters, group e-mails, and any other form of advertisement deemed necessary.

There are many needs for assistance to help with checking in students, escorting students to field level, assisting with accessible seating, handing out programs and/or providing directional support at the stadium. Many of these opportunities would allow you the ability to stay and view the ceremony in its entirety.

As part of the Augsburg University Equity Proposal, the Auggie Basics – Housing program is designed to address the needs of students who experience housing instability. The purpose of the program is to provide a bridge for students whose housing is not stable as they seek to identify a permanent solution.

Students accepted into the program (10 spots) will live on campus without cost to the student. Regardless of when students enter the program, the housing commitment will cover the full academic year if needed. If the student secures permanent housing elsewhere, they will be released from the program and the spot will be offered to another student. Students must reapply each academic year. Being chosen for the Auggie Basics program one year does not guarantee participation in future years.

The Auggie Basics – Housing application is for: Summer 2019 only, 2019-2020 Academic Year only, or Summer 2019 and 2019-2020 Academic Year.

The Minnesota House is expected to propose a state budget that has very little new money for the State Grant program, which helps one out of four college students with need-based financial aid. Instead, almost all new spending on higher education would go to the public system appropriations.

I am hoping you will consider this issue and weigh whether you would be interested in speaking up about it with your state representative. One option for you is to use the link below that is provided by the Minnesota Private College Council, which advocates for our institution and 16 other nonprofit private colleges. More background information is there, along with a draft message for your Minnesota representative. You can easily change that message to reflect your thoughts and concerns about the issue before you hit send.

For decades the State Grant program has been an important way Minnesota supports low- and middle-income college students, whether they attend public universities or private nonprofit institutions, whether they’re earning two- or four-year degrees.

As a staff member at Augsburg University, you are likely aware of the impact the program has on our students too. We see 42 percent of our students receiving these grants and the grants average $5,139 per student.

While Gov. Tim Walz proposes a significant $43 million in increase in State Grant funding, the House is considering a dramatically different budget for higher education, one that would insufficiently invest in the State Grant program. That would be a lost opportunity, given how new funding would increase grants and make more students eligible, which in turn keeps college affordable.

If you are concerned, consider helping members of the Minnesota House realize the importance of supporting college students through the State Grant program.

This summer, the Sabo Center is hosting the Place-Based Justice Network Summer Institute, a national conference for higher education institutions committed to transforming higher education and our communities through place-based community engagement.

We are seeking TWO student workers to provide support before and during the conference event as Summer Conference Hosts/Detail Managers.

*Work with Sabo staff to prepare materials for the conference.

Learn the facts: 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men have experienced sexual violence other than rape in their lifetime. (CDC 2010 study.)

Augsburg has an agreement with the Aurora Center (U of Minnesota), so students can contact them for assistance. They have a 24-Hour Helpline: (612) 626-9111. Students can also get assistance through the Center for Wellness and Counseling (CWC), 612-330-1707, and the Department of Public Safety, 612-330-1717.

Thanks to Augsburg’s Sexual Misconduct Awareness Raising Team (SMART) for their advocacy, peer education, and events to eliminate sexual violence. To support their effort we’ll have announcements in Amail for the rest of April.

Utilizing networks of organizations to collect and distribute sports bras, The Sports Bra Project works to eliminate one barrier of participation and increase the access to sports for girls and women around the world.

Minnesota lawmakers are again taking action to strengthen policies and programs focused on preparing the next generation of teachers in our state.

Thus far this legislative session, three Augsburg University students have testified in support of the Increase Teachers of Color Act of 2019 and other teacher diversity bills. Abdirizak Jama, Leyla Sahal, and Najma Abdille, all members of Augsburg’s East African Student to Teacher (EAST) program, were joined at the capitol by fellow EAST Scholars and by faculty from the Education department.

The EAST Program has been a recipient of the Minnesota legislature’s generous Collaborative Urban Educator (CUE) funding since 2013. EAST is led by Program Director Dr. Audrey Lensmire and Program Manager Hana Salad. EAST scholars pursue Bachelor’s or Master’s Degrees in Elementary, Secondary, or Special Education.

Ms. Sahal is pursuing a Master of Arts in Teaching with a concentration in Elementary Education. Ms. Abdille is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Education with a license in K-12 English as a Second Language. Mr. Jama is pursuing a Master of Arts in Teaching with a concentration in English as a Second Language.

The EAST Program stresses the importance of culturally relevant mentorship and leadership in the teacher preparation process as well as tutoring and other direct support. To date, 41 students have enrolled in the program.

Augsburg is particularly grateful to Rep. Jim Davnie, Rep. Mohamud Noor, Rep. Hodan Hassan, Sen. Patricia Torres Ray, and Rep. Carlos Mariani, among many others, who have supported teacher diversity legislation during this and previous sessions.

Spring semester is quickly coming to an end! Summer employment for all students begins May 5, 2019!!

If you are planning on having students work during the summer, please be sure to review the information below regarding summer student positions. Steps to follow when hiring a student for the summer:

1. Students returning into a position they held previously will only need a Student Hired/Returning form (formerly known as the Student Employment Hire form) submitted through Hirezon/Interview Exchange. The effective date should be May 5, 2019.

2. EVEN IF THE SAME STUDENT WILL BE DOING THE SAME JOB OVER THE SUMMER, a Student Hired/Returning form (formerly known as the Student Requisition form) needs to be completed with an effective date of May 5, 2019.

3. Any new position will need to be posted through Human Resources to the internal student job board (Handshake). The Student Posting Requisition forms can be found and are submitted through Hirezon/Interview Exchange.
Once the requisition is submitted, HR will post the position online.

When you’ve selected a student to hire, complete the Student Hired/Returning form through Hirezon/Interview Exchange. Students who have never worked on campus before will need to fill out new hire paperwork, including a background check.

Once the Student Hired/Returning form is submitted, HR sends out the new hire paperwork and background check directly to the student. NOTE: Students cannot start work until all paperwork, including the background check, has been completed.

We are excited to announce that Dawn Miller, Senior Human Resources Business Partner, will be taking on the role of Interim Director of Human Resources effective April 11th. Dawn has been a valued employee within the Human Resources department at Augsburg since January, 2016. Prior to joining Augsburg she was with HealthEast Care System (now part of Fairview Health Services) as the Senior Human Resources Business Partner for 11 years. Dawn graduated of the University of MN, and holds SHRM-SCP credentials.

We are collecting gently used athletic shoes of all sizes and equipment for all ages (balls, bats, gloves, jump ropes, clothing, etc). Our goal is to donate to the Ceder Riverside Community School and the Sports Check it Out program. Last year we donated over 100 items. Representatives from St. Paul Neighborhood Network will be on campus on Monday, April 8th from 10:00-12:00 in the lobby of the Christensen Center. They are interested in recruiting seniors for full-time AmeriCorps positions.

Teach technology for social change to people who are immigrants, low-income, experiencing homelessness, and youth!

We are the Community Technology Empowerment Project and we bridge the “digital divide” for new immigrants and low-income communities in Minneapolis and St. Paul. CTEP AmeriCorps members help youth and adults use basic technology to better access social, civic, educational and economic opportunities.

We are an AmeriCorps program. AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs, made up of three primary programs that each take a different approach to improving lives and fostering civic engagement. Members commit their time to address critical community needs like increasing academic achievement, mentoring youth, fighting poverty, sustaining national parks, preparing for disasters, and more.

Our cohort is made up of 35 members, and they teach digital literacy skills at various sites all across the Twin Cities. They work in libraries, nonprofits, employment centers, or schools for adult learners. They help people build the skills necessary to obtain employment, and improve their civic and social opportunities. A member in this position would tutor and teach workshops, create programming and materials, be part of a cohort, work together on a civic engagement project relating to issues of digital inclusion, and build relationships.

This is a full-time position, we are currently recruiting for the 2019-2020 year, and we’d love to see you come visit us!

As a Crew Leader you will guide a group of youth on outdoor landscape construction projects. These projects will leave a lasting positive impact on the community and provide youth with the opportunity to earn wages, develop new skills, and take pride in themselves. As part of the Augsburg University Equity Proposal, the Auggie Basics – Housing program is designed to address the needs of students who experience housing instability. The purpose of the program is to provide a bridge for students whose housing is not stable as they seek to identify a permanent solution.

Students accepted into the program (10 spots) will live on campus without cost to the student. Regardless of when students enter the program, the housing commitment will cover the full academic year if needed. If the student secures permanent housing elsewhere, they will be released from the program and the spot will be offered to another student. Students must reapply each academic year. Being chosen for the Auggie Basics program one year does not guarantee participation in future years.

This summer, the Sabo Center is hosting the Place-Based Justice Network Summer Institute, a national conference for higher education institutions committed to transforming higher education and our communities through place-based community engagement.

We are seeking TWO student workers to provide support before and during the conference event as Summer Conference Hosts/Detail Managers.

Essential job functions include, but are not limited to:

*Work with Sabo staff to prepare materials for the conference.
*Manage registration tables, welcome and assist conference participants with on-campus housing and other details.
*Help direct participants during transitions and be responsive to their needs.
*Take photos at event and post to social media.

This is a short term job with hours as follows:
During the week of July 1-5, 10-15 flexible hours

After 4 years, Natalie Dinki will be leaving Augsburg for a new position at the University of Minnesota, where she will join the research administration department at the University of Minnesota Medical School as a grants coordinator.

Natalie’s supervisor, Nate Hallanger, writes: While this is a great professional and career opportunity, we are saddened to see her leave Augsburg. From the time she started four years ago, Natalie has embraced Augsburg’s identity and mission, and has become critical to the ongoing operations of almost everything that happens in academic affairs. She’s helped lead us through an implementation of a new applicant tracking system, an on-boarding system, and myriad new processes and procedures including CTL grants and professional development support for faculty. In early 2017 she took on the work of classroom scheduling–a challenging task under any circumstances–and then we went ahead and opened a big, shiny new academic building to make it more complicated. I can say with certainty that despite having more classroom space, the scheduling task did not get any easier. And then we decided to upgrade our scheduling software last fall, a process in which Natalie has been critical to sorting out the inevitable bugs.

Through it all, she has approached her work and everyone with whom she interacts with humility, optimism, and care, and a real sense of service to the neighbor. For all of this and much more, I want to publicly thank Natalie for all that she’s done to help academic affairs run more smoothly, efficiently, and effectively.

Natalie’s last day here will be April 12, so I hope you’ll be able to stop by our office suite in Memorial Hall 118 on April 12 from 1:30-2:30 pm, or stop by before then if you can’t make it on the 12th.

Augsburg Athletics and the HPE Department have partnered with The Sports Bra Project to create the first ever, Augsburg Sports Bra Drive. Utilizing networks of organizations to collect and distribute sports bras, The Sports Bra Project works to eliminate one barrier of participation and increase the access to sports for girls and women around the world.

How can you help?
– Donate a new & unused sports bra of any size!
– We will be collecting donated sports bras until April 17th.
– A collection bin is located in the main athletic office in Si Melby Hall (across from the gym).

Our goal is to collect over 100 sports bras! Please consider helping us reach our goal and supporting such an important and impactful cause!
