Student Employment Information for 2017-2018 AY

If you are planning on having student employees during the academic year, please be sure to review the information below regarding student positions.

Steps to follow when hiring a student worker:

1) Students returning into a position they held previously (‘returning students’) will only need a Student Employment Hire Form submitted through Hirezon/Interview Exchange.

2) Looking for a student worker to hire? Any new position will need to be posted through Human Resources to the internal student jobs board. Student Requisitions can be submitted though Hirezon/Interview Exchange. Once it’s submitted, we will post the position online. Hiring managers will be able to view applications in real time through the system.

3) When you’ve selected a student to hire, complete the Student Employment Hire Form through Hirezon/Interview Exchange. Students who have never worked on campus before (‘new student employees’) will need to fill out additional new hire paperwork, including a background check, before they are authorized to work.

4) Do not start a student unless they have completed HR paperwork and the background check. New student employees will be sent a background check request and paperwork once the Student Employment Hire Form is submitted. If you have any questions about whether a student is authorized to work, please contact Human Resources.

Revised Staff Holiday Schedule

University Name Change: Social Media Images Available for Download

We’re getting so close to September 1 when we officially will be known as “Augsburg University!” With that in mind, now is the time to block time on your calendar to update your department’s Inside Augsburg pages, Engage Blogs, and department social media accounts.

To help with the transition of your department’s social media accounts, MarComm staff has developed some branded profile and cover photos designed for use on Facebook and Twitter, but also appropriate for other social media platforms, too.

We’re asking that official academic and staff departments, and chartered student organizations, select from among these profile and cover photos to launch your official social media accounts as Augsburg University. We hope to kick off the new academic year with a unified show of force around our branded images. Doing so will reinforce to our public audiences — prospective students and their families, alumni, corporate and foundation partners, and lawmakers — that we are a cohesive, unified community.

MarComm staff already converted top-tier, official social media accounts held by Augsburg. This work was done in advance of other departments to understand any kinks in the changes and so that if your department needs assistance, we are more readily available to help you.

Apply for the MSP TechHire Scholars Program

MSP TechHire Scholars is a program funded by the City of Minneapolis which provides opportunities for underrepresented upperclassmen at Augsburg to pursue IT internships at Fairview Health Services and learn more about IT careers available in the healthcare industry.

This month, six Augsburg students will be selected to become MSP TechHire Scholars and receive a $2,310 scholarship as well as a paid fall semester internship ($20/hour) within IT at Fairview. Internships will run September-December and Scholars may choose to complete the internship for 0, 2, or 4 credits (Scholars may work a maximum of 170 hours at their internship placements.) In addition to completing their internship, Scholars will be expected to complete several unpaid professional development workshops on campus during the course of the semester.

As stipulated by the grant requirements, only students who meet the following criteria are eligible to be considered for this opportunity:
– Identify as a student of color, first generation in college (neither parent has a 4 year college degree) and/or Pell grant/MN Dream Act State Grant eligible
– Major or minor in MIS, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Business Management
– Rising Senior in good standing at Augsburg (anticipated graduation in Dec 2017 or May 2018)
– Interest in pursuing an IT career within healthcare

Unfortunately, international students are not eligible for this opportunity.

If you are one of the few departments that use personalized envelopes, the new Augsburg University envelopes are now ready to order! You must place your order by 4 PM Monday, August 21 in order to receive them the last week in August. Or, order them whenever you want thereafter.

The order site is where it always has been: Inside Augsburg, Central Services. Note, if you haven’t created a user name and login for this envelope site, you need to create one on your first visit. There is not a shared credential like the other order sites. Your own login enables you to reorder an exact item by going to your order history. If you have a login already, check your history to see if you have ordered your envelope before. If so, click reorder and the personalization will simply be transferred to the new University envelope.

Personalized envelopes come in many sizes, all with the general Augsburg University return address. There is room for up to two lines of personalization above the address. Personalized envelopes are significantly more expensive than general envelopes (because you would order a smaller quantity for your department than the larger order of general envelopes placed for the entire University), so if there is not a specific purpose for personalizing, the general envelopes should serve your mailing purposes well. Copy Center Accepting Augsburg College Paper for Repurposing

The Environmental Stewardship Committee will be repurposing Augsburg College paper (e.g., letterhead) into notepads this fall! When you’re ready to get rid of your extra paper, you can drop it off at the Copy Center. In September, notepads and scratch paper will be available. New Copiers Installed This Week

New copiers will be installed around campus this week. If you have a Canon copier in your area, it will be replaced by a Sharp copier, and there are a few HP printers being replaced by Sharp copiers. I think you will like the pull-out keyboard (in addition to the touchscreen) if you scan to other e-mail addresses and add a subject or notes to your scan. I think you will also appreciate the ease of using your fob to access the copier rather than entering a code, and having a one-touch button to scan to your e-mail. Not all FOBs may work right away; loggin in with your employee ID number may be required temporarily, so yo umay want to look that up if you don’t know it! Training will be provided at the machine as soon as it is installed. You can share that training with others in your area who are not available or call the Copy Center at x1054 afterward to schedule follow-up training.

Ever wondered how the library creates digital collections? Have you heard about our institutional repository and wondered “what the heck is that” or “why should I care”? Then mark your calendar and stop by Lindell Library this Friday, August 11, between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. Step inside our digitization lab and see how we preserve Auggie history through the ages. Learn all about Idun (ee-doon), Augsburg’s own institutional repository, and how you can use Idun to publish and disseminate everything from faculty books and articles to grad student theses to events such as convocations, theatrical productions, or musical performances. This is also your chance to meet the newest member of the library team, Stewart Van Cleve, Digital Archivist and Research Services Librarian.

Augsburg to Host American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow for 2017-18

I’m pleased to share the news that Augsburg has been selected as a campus site for the 2017-18 American Council on Education Fellows program and will host Dr. Sandra King, presidential fellow and director of community college relationships at Minnesota State University Mankato, over the course of the coming academic year.
The ACE Fellows initiative is a premier higher education leadership development program that helps ensure a diverse cadre of future leaders is ready to take on real-world challenges and serve the capacity-building needs of their institutions. During her year-long fellowship, Dr. King will spend approximately one week per month at Augsburg learning about the presidency, decision-making at the leadership team level, and Augsburg’s distinctive commitment to student success.
Dr. King has more than 20 years of leadership experience in organizations inside and outside of higher education. In her current position, she focuses on collaborating with community college partners to eliminate barriers and create smooth transitions for students transferring from community colleges to Minnesota State Mankato. She also is an Army veteran and serves as veteran liaison, responsible for leading efforts in facilitating the success of military-connected students. Sandra holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Minnesota State Mankato and a doctorate in leadership from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota.
Dr. King will launch her fellowship with a day of introductory meetings on Monday, August 21. As you begin to see her engaged on our campus, please join me in extending a warm welcome and our congratulations to her on this prestigious national fellowship.

MSP TechHire Scholars is a program funded by the City of Minneapolis which provides opportunities for underrepresented upperclassmen at Augsburg to pursue IT internships at Fairview Health Services and learn more about IT careers available in the healthcare industry.

This month, six Augsburg students will be selected to become MSP TechHire Scholars and receive a $2,310 scholarship as well as a paid fall semester internship ($20/hour) within IT at Fairview. Internships will run September-December and Scholars may choose to complete the internship for 0, 2, or 4 credits (Scholars may work a maximum of 170 hours at their internship placements.) In addition to completing their internship, Scholars will be expected to complete several unpaid professional development workshops on campus during the course of the semester.

As stipulated by the grant requirements, only students who meet the following criteria are eligible to be considered for this opportunity:
– Identify as a student of color, first generation in college (neither parent has a 4 year college degree) and/or Pell grant/MN Dream Act State Grant eligible
– Major or minor in MIS, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Business Management
– Rising Senior in good standing at Augsburg (anticipated graduation in Dec 2017 or May 2018)
– Interest in pursuing an IT career within healthcare

Learn all about Idun, Augsburg’s own institutional repository, and how you can use Idun to disseminate everything from faculty publications to student research to events such as convocations, theatrical productions, or musical performances. New Augsburg University name badges are now ready to pre-order! You must place your order by 4 PM Friday, August 11 in order to receive it the last week in August. Badges ordered by August 11 will cost $5. If you miss this pre-order deadline, you can order anytime and your badge will cost $8 and be delivered the week following your order (in September or thereafter).

The order site is where it always has been: Inside Augsburg>A to Z Directory>Central Services>On Line ordering>Business Cards, Letterhead, Envelopes, Name Badges>Name Badges. Please complete your order all the way through checkout – don’t leave items in the cart; we all share the same cart!

Badges come in magnet and pin back styles. There are one-line, two-line, and three-line options, plus a special three-line option for those students and alumni who put their grad year on the badge (for example ’14). Don’t worry that on the proof your grad year seems too far to the right, it will print next to your name.

New copiers will be installed around campus the week of August 14. If you have a Canon copier in your area, it will be replaced by a Sharp copier. I think you will like the pull-out keyboard (in addition to the touchscreen) if you scan to other e-mail addresses and add a subject or notes to your scan. I think you will also appreciate the ease of using your fob to access the copier rather than entering a code, and having a one-touch button to scan to your e-mail. Training will be provided at the machine as soon as it is installed. You can share that training with others in your area who are not available or call the Copy Center at x1054 afterward to schedule follow-up training.

Manage the user support aspects of the IT organization in collaboration with other members of the IT leadership team. Participate in planning/budgeting, service and infrastructure oversight, project implementation and administration. Lead IT user support staff to improve IT literacy and to support effective & appropriate use of IT resources for academic and administrative work and participation in the life of the institution.

University Name Change: Augsburg Logos, Mortensen Hall

The new, official Augsburg University logos now are available to faculty and staff for download by visiting the Marketing and Communication area of the Inside Augsburg website. Several variations are available for use on all printed materials, department websites, University merchandise, and campus signage.

It is important that the new logos, variations, and symbols replace all previously used logos and symbols. Visit Marketing and Communication at http://inside.augsburg.edu/marketing/style_guidelines/ for details on the proper uses of the Augsburg University symbol and variations, as well as information about Augsburg’s official school colors, typography, and more.

The lettering looks fantastic and is just more proof that in only 29 days, we will be Augsburg University!

At the end of this week, the facing will be patched and repainted. Then, at the end of the month, a crane will be used to install new signage. Installation is weather- and equipment-dependent. He holds a Master’s Degree in Public Management majoring in Policy Analysis from School of Public Policy and Management, Tsinghua University, China. He further holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree majoring in Political Science and Industrial Psychology from the University of Namibia.

Alex worked for the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development for ten years as a Development Planner dealing with issues of local government operations, administration and management. In 2011 he worked for the United Nations Development Programme as a Programme Officer. He further worked as Technical Advisor under the Building Local Capacity Project for Southern Africa within the Management Sciences for Health.

Alex has three years of experience working with the Namibia University of Science and Technology teaching courses ‘Governance and Politics in Africa’ and ‘Disaster Risk Management’. He also worked with the Namibia Business School of the University of Namibia as a tutor for a work based project course.

Introducing Nancy Huynh

It is with great excitement that I introduce Nancy Huynh as the new Program Coordinator in the Campus Activities and Orientation Department! Nancy is an alum of Hamline University and the University of St. Thomas and comes to us with an impressive background in K-12 education, college access programs, and the community and technical college arena. She also most recently worked as the Member & Audience Services Supervisor at Minnesota Public Radio while completing her Master’s degree in Student Affairs Leadership. I am beyond thrilled to welcome her to the team and hope many of you get a chance to say hello as you see her around campus this summer and fall. Nancy’s official first day is Monday, July 24.

Welcome to New Program Coordinator in Namibia, Alex Sikume!

Alex Sikume is our new Instructor for Political Science and Social Change in our semester program in Southern Africa: NATION BUILDING, GLOBALIZATION, AND DECOLONIZING THE MIND. He holds a Master’s Degree in Public Management majoring in Policy Analysis from School of Public Policy and Management, Tsinghua University, China. He further holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree majoring in Political Science and Industrial Psychology from the University of Namibia.

Alex worked for the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development for ten years as a Development Planner dealing with issues of local government operations, administration and management. In 2011 he worked for the United Nations Development Programme as a Programme Officer. He further worked as Technical Advisor under the Building Local Capacity Project for Southern Africa within the Management Sciences for Health.

Alex has three years of experience working with the Namibia University of Science and Technology teaching courses ‘Governance and Politics in Africa’ and ‘Disaster Risk Management’. He also worked with the Namibia Business School of the University of Namibia as a tutor for a work based project course.

Battery Recycling is Back

The battery recycling box is back on the ReUse table in lower level Christensen! While many locations no longer consider alkaline batteries to be household waste, since Minnesota has higher standards for hazardous waste, and Minneapolis and Hennepin County are still recycling them, Augsburg will commit to recycling them as well. You can drop off the following batteries at the ReUse table: alkaline or pile alkaline, button batteries, carbon zinc (CZn), lithium (Li), lithium-ion (Li-ion), mercuric oxide, nickel cadmium (Ni-Cd), nickel metal hydride (NiMH), nickel zinc (NiZn), and zinc air.

Because of low vendor interested and staff capacity this year, the West Bank Farmer’s Market has been cancelled. Even though we’ll miss the weekly lunch break with farmers and local vendors, we look forward to this opportunity to have some community conversations about food and food access over the coming months to see if we can re-group for next year. If you’re interested in being part of these conversations or sharing your thoughts about the on-campus farmer’s market, talk with Allyson (greena@augsburg.edu)! You can find days and times for other markets on the Homegrown Minneapolis site. Minneapolis Farmer’s Markets

Donate Paper or Plastic Bags to Campus Kitchen

Instead of recycling those paper or plastic bags taking up space in your house, bring them to Campus Kitchen! Every Saturday from now until November, we’ll be gleaning produce from the Mill City Farmer’s Market, packing it up into sample bags, and distributing it to elders in Cedar-Riverside. If you have *clean* paper or plastic grocery bags, please drop them off at the Campus Kitchen closet next to the elevator on the top floor of Christensen (near kitchen back entrance). We use 30-40 bags per week, so keep them coming!

(If you really want to recycle those plastic bags, though, you can take them back to a grocery store or Target)

Welcome to Stewart Van Cleve

Please join me in welcoming Stewart Van Cleve to Augsburg. Stewart brings a broad range of library and archival experiences as well as a strong record of scholarship to his role as Digital Archivist and Research Services Librarian. He has held positions at Winona State University and Metropolitan State University libraries, the Metropolitan Council, and the Minnesota Historical Society. In addition, Stewart was an adjunct instructor in Urban Studies at the University of Minnesota, and also served as Interim Curator in the U’s Tretter Collection in GLBT Studies.

Author of “Land of 10,000 Loves: A History of Queer Minnesota” (University of Minnesota Press), Stewart is also a sought-after speaker and expert on the history of the LGBT community in our state. Stewart possesses a bachelor degree from the University of Minnesota and a master degree from Portland State University, both in Urban Studies, and earned his Master of Library Science degree from St. Kate’s.

Welcome TRIO/ SSS Summer Bridge

Twenty-five new Auggies begin their journey at Augsburg with TRIO/ SSS Summer Bridge! This five-week academic program is offered to Augsburg TRIO/ SSS eligible first-year students (first generation, low income, and/or have a disability, and meet academic need requirements). Summer Bridge runs Sunday, July 9th through Thursday, August 10th, 2017.

Summer Bridge students will take REL 100: Religion, Vocation, and the Search for Meaning with Dr. Mark Tranvik, and COM 111: Public Speaking with Dr. Bob Groven. Students will participate in Supplemental Instruction sessions, attend workshops to learn more about Augsburg and college life, and take part in social and cultural enrichment activities. The students will develop a strong sense of community through learning and living together.

The Summer Bridge program and TRIO/ SSS are jointly funded by the U.S. Department of Education and Augsburg. Additional funding is provided by the Minnesota Department of Education and the USDA Summer Food Service Program. Once again, we will offer full-tuition per year up to four year Promise Grants to eligible Summer Bridge participants upon successful completion of the TRIO/ SSS Summer Bridge program! Students must also meet additional requirements throughout the academic year as part of the Summer Bridge Promise Grant. Thanks to everyone who continues to help us make this program a huge success every year!

With only about 60 days remaining before we officially are Augsburg University, now is the time for individual departments to start digging into the work needed at the departmental level to ensure our campus is transformed by September 1.

Early in July, faculty department chairs and administrative department leaders will receive an email from Jodi Collen, Senior Director of University Events, that includes your “Department Name Change Checklist.” The checklist will provide a list of all the items your department will need to update.

University Name Change Updates

Important Payroll Information for the July 7th Pay Date

The Payroll Office will be closed for the holidays on Monday July 3rd and Tuesday July 4th. The Kronos time that is normally pulled on Tuesday, will be pulled at 10am on Wednesday morning. The system will still lock all time cards on Monday July 3rd at 2 pm. Supervisors will be required to approve the time cards no later than 10 am on Tuesday July 4th.

If you are NOT scheduled to work on Saturday, we encourage everyone to complete and submit your time card by the end of the day this Friday. If you are scheduled to work on Saturday, you should submit your time card at the end of your work day on Saturday. This will ensure time cards are completed, submitted, and approved in a timely manner without conflicting with the holiday schedule.

The Nobel Peace Prize Forum is seeking students who can act as hosts for visiting students in the Fall of 2017. Students are asked to step forward as hosts to other college and university students who will be visiting the Twin Cities for the Forum from the 14th-16th of September.
If you know you are living on campus next Fall, then you would make a perfect host! Anderson, Luther, and Mortensen would make great spaces for visiting students to stay, but any on campus living area would be fantastic. We are looking for students who would be willing to help out and provide space for 2-3 nights.

As a host you will have the opportunity to get to know a student outside of Augsburg. It is a great experience that allows you to meet some new faces and contribute to the college’s rich academic community. By being a host you can get to know a student from another college or university and get to know more about other colleges and how they run. You will be the student’s best introduction to the city! If you want to gain a new connection and meet students from other colleges/universities, then this is perfect for you!

Re-purpose Your Augsburg “College” Paper

We probably all have some Augsburg College paper that will need to disappear soon. Instead of recycling it all, the Environmental Stewardship Committee is working on ways to creatively re-purpose it! More details to come, but if you have paper, hang on to it for now. Notepads, homemade paper, paper mache – what else could we do with this resource…?

Support the Tomatoes in the Community Garden

There are some wonderful tomatoes growing in the community garden, but it’s time to get them some support before they fall over! Tomato cages are expensive and not always effective, so we’re holding a Great Tomato Stake-Off in the garden next Friday, June 30th at 5pm. We’re willing to be creative with staking materials, but we’re especially looking for donations of the following: wooden stakes (~ 6 ft tall with a pointed end), bamboo poles, tall metal stakes for fencing, or anything similar to those materials. Can you check your garages and alleys for these materials and anything else you think could creatively be used to keep tomatoes upright and happy? Donations can be dropped off at the Sabo Center anytime before June 30th. Contact Allyson if you want confirmation that your scrounged materials will actually be useful for staking tomatoes!
