Study Abroad/Away is hiring.

Calling all study abroad returnees and international students. The Center for Global Education & Experience is hiring a new Peer Advisor to start this summer.

This is a key office support position supporting students who want to study abroad or study away in the US. Responsibilities in this position include: Peer Advising, library upkeep, office management, Event Promotion, Maintenance of online application system, and study abroad/away promotion through peer-to-peer outreach, class visits, tabling, and social media.

We can offer 15-35 hours per week this summer (depending on your schedule/needs) and/or starting in August. During the semesters, we offer 10 hours per week.

Student Rate: $9.50
Student Supervisory Rate: $10.50

Steps to follow when hiring a student worker for summer 2017

1. Students returning into a position they held previously will only need a Student Employment Hire Form submitted through Hirezon/Interview Exchange.

2. Looking for a student worker to hire? Any new position will need to be posted through Human Resources to the internal student jobs board. Student Requisitions can be submitted though Hirezon/Interview Exchange. Once it’s submitted, we will post the position online. Hiring managers will be able to view applications in real time through the system.

3. When you’ve selected a student to hire, complete the Student Employment Hire Form through Hirezon/Interview Exchange. Students who have never worked on campus before will need to fill out additional HR forms, including a background check, before they will be authorized to work.

Auditions for the 2017-2018 Augsburg Choir will be held in the Music Building (Choir Room – M3) on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 24, 25 and 26.

HISTORY: The choir, now in its 84th year, is one of Augsburg’s oldest ongoing organizations. For the past 37 years it has been the anchor ensemble of the college’s Advent Vespers which is attended by some 8000 people each year.

THIS NEXT YEAR: Mark Sedio (’76) will continue as conductor for this forthcoming academic year. In addition to his role at Augsburg, Sedio is Cantor (Director of Music) at Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis. He is a widely published composer, choral and organ clinician, stand-up comedian, teacher and a specialist in multi-cultural/world music. This forthcoming year the choir will not only focus on choral repertoire from Europe (i.e. Iceland, Slovakia, Germany, Estonia), the United States and Latin America – but will partner with the National Lutheran Choir and Palestinian ethnomusicologist Zafer Tawil for a program highlighting music of the Middle East and North Africa.

SCHEDULE: The Augsburg Choir meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:30 to 6:00 (usually 5:40 to accommodate evening classes).

WHO? YOU! Membership in the choir (by audition) is open to ANY and ALL Augsburg undergraduate students – regardless of discipline/major. Over the years we’ve worked out schedules to include those involved in athletics (football, soccer, lacrosse) and theater.

HOW? Sign-up sheets for auditions will be available at the CHOIR DESK in Christensen Hall (10:30 to 11:30) and will then be posted outside the choir room in the music building. No preparation necessary.

The Homework Help Program at Trinity Congregation here in Cedar Riverside is looking for people to work with youth on their homework any afternoon of the week that fits your schedule. The program goes from 3:30pm-6:00pm. You can go for one hour or more. This is a good way to use your community service hours.

The Nobel Peace Prize Forum is seeking students who can act as hosts for visiting students in the Fall of 2017 during the important event days. Students are asked to step forward as hosts to other college and university students who will be visiting the Twin Cities for the Forum from the 14th-16th of September. Students will be coming from all over the country (as far as Hawaii) and we may also have a few international students on campus.
If you know you are living on campus next Fall, then you would make a perfect host! Anderson, Luther, and Mortensen would make great spaces for visiting students to stay, but any on campus living area would be fantastic. We are looking for students who would be willing to help out and provide space for 2-3 nights.
As a host you will have the opportunity to get to know a student outside of Augsburg. It is a great experience that allows you to meet some new faces and contribute to the college’s rich academic community. You will serve as another student’s introduction to the Twin Cities, and have the opportunity to connect with non-Augsburg students.

The Religion department will be launching a new degree in Theology and Public Leadership in the fall of 2017. This degree program will be replacing the Youth and Family Ministry Degree. We are pleased to announce Ruby Murillo as the new director of Latinx Student Services! Ruby comes to Augsburg from Inver Hills Community College, where she served as an academic advisor for TRiO/SSS, Traveler’s EDGE, undocumented, and DACA students. Ruby has a bachelor of science degree in psychology from Iowa State University and a master of science degree in student affairs in higher education from Miami University in Ohio. After 17 years of dedicated support for faculty and student research, Bill Wittenbreer is hanging up his bow tie and moving on to his next act in life. In honor of his service and collegiality, the History Department and the library are jointly hosting a farewell party, and you are cordially invited. Jila Nikpay, instructor in film, will be screening her original documentary “Dreaming with Lola” at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival on April 23.

“Dreaming With Lola” is a documentary short. Following her dream of owning a small farm, Khaiti Hallstein struggles with the uncertainty of her work yet keeps a sense of humor when faced with unexpected life lessons from her ducks.

The 2017 Augsburg Student Film and Screenplay Festival presented by the Fine Arts Film Scholars was held Saturday, April 1.

“All About Bias” is a hybrid, group-format e-learning workshop that is a part of the Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program and provides an introduction to understanding and responding to unconscious bias in any workplace setting or interaction. Relevant to employees of all levels, participation in this workshop can positively impact all aspects of an organization. This workshop explores the hidden and pervasive nature of unconscious bias – how it works in the human brain, how it can impact workplace interactions and decisions, and how individuals can respond when they encounter it in themselves.

Congratulations to Jake Moore, senior film student, recipient of a Student Production Crystal Pillar Award from the Upper Midwest Emmy® Chapter/Foundation for his animated short film “Interface.” “Interface” is short animation that asks: What is time? Is it real? Why do we follow its seemingly strict structure? An intruder brings these questions to light.

Moore accepted the award at the annual National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences-Upper Midwest Student Production Awards ceremony held Friday, March 31.

Augsburg films were nominated in fiction, documentary, animation, and public affairs/community service.

At last week’s Memorial Blood Center spring blood drive Augsburg achieved its highest ever percentage of donations at 105% That means from just last week’s drive alone Auggies helped save potentially 103 lives!! Twenty-two donors were first timers — thank you. Eight donors were double red call donors — thank you, too.

CWC also wants to thank Taylor Mattice and the Student Athlete Advisory Council for their partnership in tabling and promoting the event as well as having student athletes assist the day of the donation at the snack bar area.

Thank you again and we will be back in October for our fall blood drive.

​I hope you will join me in thanking–and saying farewell–to Dr. Jim Gross, whose position as associate provost for academic innovation and strategic initiatives will end with the current academic year.


Jim’s last day will be May 12. A farewell reception in Rochester is planned for the last week in April – details will be shared soon. A reception is also planned in Minneapolis on May 3rd from 10-11:00 am in OGC 100.

We are working to ensure a smooth transition in Rochester and to ensure that the site has the leadership required to continue to strengthen our programs, partnerships, and presence in SE Minnesota. Until that leadership is secured, Ron Blankenship will serve as Interim Director of the Rochester site.

I am grateful for Jim’s commitment and service to Augsburg and for his partnership as a senior academic leader. He has helped develop a strategic plan for Rochester that aligns with Augsburg 2019 and focuses our attention on key priorities: (a) boosting enrollment in existing programs, (b) developing new programs that respond to the needs of the Rochester community, (c) enhancing the teaching and learning environment; (d) enhancing our reputation in SE Minnesota, and (e) positioning the College as a partner with a set of distinctive strengths in a community experiencing rapid growth and transformation. He has demonstrated keen awareness of emerging trends, a deep understanding of the contemporary landscape in higher education, and mature judgment when faced with tough questions. Perhaps most importantly, he has repeatedly shown himself to be a person of integrity, generosity, and character.

Academic program innovation that is aligned with our mission and institutional strengths, and responsive to the regional needs, remains a high strategic priority for the College. We remain committed to fueling the innovative and creative energies of our faculty, staff, and administration as we move forward.

There will be a meeting in the Cedar Room at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday to discuss how the Augsburg community can help the No Dakota Access Pipeline effort. We will be discussing creating a documentary to educate people about the pipeline. This documentary will include interviews with people who have been to Standing Rock. We will also be discussing Augsburg’s relationship with Wells Fargo because of Wells Fargo’s involvement with funding the pipeline. All are welcome to join us on Wednesday!

* Students must be a college junior or senior (60 credits completed) at the time of the internship. (Second semester sophomores can apply as long as they hold junior standing BEFORE the internship begins.)

There will be a meeting in the Cedar Room at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday to discuss how the Augsburg community can help the No Dakota Access Pipeline effort. We will be discussing creating a documentary to educate people about the pipeline. This documentary will include interviews with people who have been to Standing Rock. We will also be discussing Augsburg’s relationship with Wells Fargo because of Wells Fargo’s involvement with funding the pipeline. All are welcome to join us on Wednesday!

Please join the Admissions Office in a Farewell Open House for Brenda Hemmingsen, who will be leaving our office after almost 20 years here at Augsburg College. Brenda not only has been a huge asset to our office and campus community, but has been “Mama B” to hundreds of students throughout the years. We are forever indebted to her for her service and commitment to this institution and more importantly, to the her love of the students, past and present.

The open house will be Wednesday, April 5th from 2:00-3:30pm in the Admissions Suite (lower level Christensen Center). Join us for cake and coffee and celebration as we wish her farewell!

We are looking for contributions to artwork to be installed in the new Hagfors Center. Two artists are looking for text passages to accompany three pieces designed for the new building, and we are looking for student input. Selections of text may come from any literary work or religious text of any faith tradition, as long as they are inspiring and fitting with the spirit of the artwork. Display boards depicting the artwork designs will be posted around campus, where anyone may fill out a slip and drop it in the submission box.
