The Center for Wellness & Counseling is closed for the summer, but there are a number of
mental health resources still available to Augsburg students. CWC wishes everyone a summer
of rest and renewal, but we encourage you to reach out for support if and when you need it!

Organized around six different topic areas, groups meet six times over the course of the summer over Zoom. Launching the V-Portfolio: Why Vocation is Important

The V-Portfolio Coordinator, Jon Bates, has been furthering the work of the V-Portfolio alongside the directors with the centers of commitment at Augsburg University; the Sabo Center, Strommen Center, Center for Global Education & Experience, and the Christensen Center for Vocation.

The V-Portfolio is essentially an online E-Portfolio but with a foundation of using vocation as the grounding for students, hence the title, Vocation Portfolio.

Within the updated V-Portfolio website students are introduced or reintroduced to the term vocation, as it is defined as, “the way you are equipped, empowered, called, and driven to make our world a better place for all living things.” Colloquially vocation has been coined as a term that means the type of career or lifestyle one aspires to have. Vocation is something that happens in the future and begins with the individual. The V-Portfolio offers a different definition of vocation. As through the V-Portfolio, vocation is framed to focus on the present and is in response to the world, the neighbor. This is important work as our vocation is compelled to move because of the neighbor and that we get to decide how to respond using our own gifts, knowledge, and talents. The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University is seeking professionals of all ages to join our Advocates for Debate initiative.

The goal of Advocates for Debate is to bring together people who are interested in supporting the MNUDL by:

• Connecting with members of the MN Speech and Debate community through networking happy hours, lunches, and a shared membership list, with a goal of creating opportunities for cross-generational & multi-regional connections. We want debate alums from all schools from every generation to know one another!

• Tackling part of the MNUDL strategic plan that is of interest to the members; examples could include: connecting with MNUDL alums, growing partnerships with schools and school districts, and creating corporate or law firm partnerships.

• Fundraising to support the MNUDL through a personal donation as well as using your network to support debate. This could include employer matched gifts, writing a letter of support for a grant from an employer, corporate sponsorship, paid volunteer time, and more.

• Sharing their Time: You are welcome to join with whatever level of engagement you can bring. We plan to have a first organizational meeting via Zoom to plan for our first year and by joining, you get to help determine our plan. We will also plan for fun in-person happy hours here in the Twin Cities.

Printer and Copier Vendor Tours

Shonna Fulford Named Director of Admissions

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Shonna Fulford ’09 as director of admissions, effective June 13, 2022. In this role, Shonna will drive new strategic initiatives like the Augsburg Applies 2U direct admission program that will build deeper connections with prospective undergraduate students and their families. Shonna will lead student-centered systems change and recruitment efforts to ensure sustainable first-year and transfer student enrollments.

Shonna brings 13 years of higher education enrollment and admissions experience to this new leadership position, 10 of them at Augsburg. She played a key role in enrolling three of the largest classes in Augsburg’s history in recent years as associate director of admissions and lead supervisor of the first-year recruitment team. A dynamic, motivating presence and inspiring public speaker, she is a member of the National Association for College Admissions Counseling, the Minnesota Association for College Admissions Counseling, and the Minnesota Association for Counselors of Color.

Associate Director of Admissions Paul Kienberger will also take on an expanded role in a re-envisioned division leadership structure. Working closely with Shonna, he will co-manage the division’s human and analytical resources with a focus on training, capacity building, implementing strategic initiatives, and use of predictive analytics.

With more than two decades of combined experience at Augsburg, Paul and Shonna bring the knowledge, experience, and commitment needed to lead inclusive change with strategic partners both on and off campus. Their leadership will advance the vision of the Strategic Enrollment Management division to be a belonging organization that builds deeper relations, changes systems, and dismantles the tenets of white supremacy and oppression in higher education enrollment management.

Congratulations to Juli Kramer

After many years of service to the Luther Seminary community, Juli Kramer will retire from her role as project and production manager on the shared services marketing team that serves both Luther and Augsburg University effective June 30, the end of the seminary’s fiscal year. I’m excited to share, however, that Juli will still be an active part of the Luther community. She has accepted a part-time role as the managing editor for Word & World beginning July 1.

Juli has been a wonderful and thoughtful colleague, and we will always be grateful for her dedication, commitment, and hard work. I hope you’ll join me in congratulating her on her exciting news! Reminder: Coming Login Changes to Inside Augsburg for Employees the Week of June 6, 2022

This is a reminder that the use of Duo Mobile will be expanding to Inside Augsburg for current faculty and staff the week of June 6th. The requirement will be staggered throughout the week to different groups of people.

We recommend you register your Duo Mobile app as soon as possible to prevent interruption to online services like gmail or moodle.

1. Install Duo Mobile from your phone’s app store.
2. On your laptop/computer, visit https://duo.augsburg.edu and click on Enrollment and Device Management to start the enrollment process. Follow the instructions on the page.
3. The instructions will help you register your Duo Mobile app.

Duo Mobile is a tool to provide multi-factor authentication to online logins. These days phishing attacks (when someone tricks you into sharing your password) are the main way ransomware and data breaches start at organizations. These attacks can cost organizations hundreds of thousands of dollars to millions of dollars to clean up. And organizations can be offline for days during the cleanup.

Multi-factor authentication provides you additional protection beyond your password. At least once a week you will need to approve your Inside Augsburg login using the Duo Mobile app.

Welcome John Anderson to Institutional Advancement

Welcome to John Anderson, Augsburg’s new Director of Grants and Sponsored Programs!

John has spent the past four years as the Development Manager at Family Tree Clinic researching new funding prospects, writing grants and fundraising materials, and collaborating his colleagues to fund the mission of the clinic. Previously, John was a professor teaching courses in Ethics and Philosophy at Macalester, St. Catherine’s and Newbury College. John has a B.A. in History from Samford University, a M.A. in Religion from Yale Divinity School and a PhD in Christian Ethics from Loyala University, Chicago.

The Roddenberry Fellowship is a 12-month program that offers Fellows $50,000 to take an existing initiative (e.g. campaign, organization) to the next level and amplify its impact OR to launch a new initiative. Fellows can be of any age or level, but must be working on a project, organization, or initiative with direct impact in Civil Rights, Environmental Protection, Immigration and Refugee Rights, Health and Wellness, and/or LGBTQIA and Women’s Rights.

Welcome KC Gubrud to the Office of Academic Affairs

Please join the Office of Academic Affairs in welcoming KC Gubrud as the incoming Executive Assistant to the Provost. In addition to managing the daily operations of the Provost’s Office and serving as the primary support for the incoming provost, Paula O’Loughlin, KC will be the point of contact for full-time faculty searches and reviews, and the coordination of year-end events. KC’s first day will be Monday, June 6th. She and Judi Green will spend the week transitioning this work.

KC most recently served for eight years as Director of Operations, managing administration, human resources, finance and facility oversight, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in New Brighton, MN. Prior work experience includes both higher education and non-profit organizations where she served in administrator roles supporting senior executives in the Office of Seminary Relations at Luther Seminary and the Lutheran Coalition for Public Policy.

KC holds a B.A. in English from St. Olaf College and an M.A. in Public Administration from Hamline University. She resides in Minneapolis with her husband and two children. Her daughter is a senior at Augsburg – Go Auggies!

New Director of Marketing Douachee Lee

I hope you’ll join me in welcoming Douachee Lee to the university and seminary communities. Douachee joins us from the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota, where she served as marketing director, and will play the same role on our shared services marketing and communication team. She has also served on the board for College Possible Minnesota, a nonprofit college access and success organization.

Douachee has extensive experience in marketing management and strategy, along with a deep commitment to the diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging work that is so important at both institutions. I am confident that she will become a trusted partner to our colleagues on both campuses.

Payroll Stipend Form

The Augsburg Human Resources and Payroll team is launching a new electronic Payroll Payment Request (stipend) form and approval flow. No more paper forms!

The approval flow requires each request to be approved by the cost center’s budget manager, the Division Vice President and Vice President of Strategy. The new process reduces employee ID errors to help ensure Payroll Payment requests are processed correctly

The Payroll Payment Request form is available at sites.augsburg.edu/hr/payroll for immediate use! Old PDF/Paper forms will continue to be accepted until May 31st. Beginning June 1st only the new electronic Payroll Payment Request form will be accepted.

A couple of reminders:
-This form is to be used to request staff & student employee compensation for services rendered outside of their regularly scheduled work duties. This form should not be used in lieu of non-exempt employees recording hours worked on their biweekly timesheet. All payment requests will be reviewed for legal compliance under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
-Reimbursements for mileage, supplies, etc. should be requested from Administrative Accounting.

News of a brand new opportunity was just made – the Obama Voyager Scholarship. A collaboration between Barack and Michelle Obama and Airbnb’s Brian Chesky. Designed for rising juniors who intend a career in public service.

Benefits
– Students will receive up to $25,000 per year in “last dollar” financial aid for their junior and senior years of college. This financial aid should alleviate the burden of college debt so that students can afford to pursue a career in public service.
– Students will receive a $10,000 stipend and free Airbnb housing to pursue a summer work-travel experience between their junior and senior year of college.
– After graduation, Airbnb will provide the students with a $2,000 travel credit every year for 10 years, totaling $20,000. This will allow students to continue to broaden their horizons and forge new connections throughout their public service careers.
– Students will be invited each fall to an annual summit to help define and inspire their public service journey. At the summit this fall, they will meet with President Obama and Brian Chesky to talk about the role of empathy and understanding in leadership. They’ll also hear from guest speakers on different approaches to service, and build community with other Voyagers.

Eligibility:
Plan to enroll full-time in their junior year of study at an accredited four-year college or university in the United States in Fall 2022.
Have a minimum GPA of 3.0
Have demonstrated a commitment to public service
Have demonstrated need
Plan to pursue a career in public service upon graduation
Be a United States (U.S.) citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or an individual granted deferred action status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA)

Supporting First-Generation College Students

On Saturday, June 4th, three of our Augsburg University students who identify as First-generation college students will be running the FANS Ultra-Marathon. FANS (Furthering Achievement Through a Network of Support) is a college and career mentorship program for high school students, specifically working with students of color, recent immigrants, and other groups that have been historically underrepresented in higher education.

Angelica Bello Ayapantecatl, Kay Joanne Carvajal Moran and Ivonne Hernandez will be participating in the 6-Hour Marathon at Normandale Lake and would appreciate the support of our Augsburg directors, professors, staff, students and community members. They are only $940 dollars short from their goal! If you have the opportunity to donate to their fundraiser anything would help!

Free Groceries at the Cupboard and Cooking Space at the Food Lab

The Campus Cupboard (Anderson 26) is open this summer during the following times:

Mondays: 3-7pm
Tuesdays: 12:30-3:30pm
Wednesdays: 3-6pm

All groceries are free!

You can also join Campus Kitchen in the Food Lab this summer every Tuesday 2-4pm and Wednesday 4-6pm for open cooking hours!

We will provide all the kitchen equipment and some basic ingredients, and you can bring any extra ingredients for yourself (or stop by the Campus Cupboard on your way!).

MnTech Foundation Scholarship Applications – Deadline is TODAY

Greetings! It is that time of year again!

We are currently accepting applications for the Minnesota Technology Foundation Scholarship. The scholarships are for Minnesota undergraduate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. These awards range from $2,500 to $5,000 awards and can include internship opportunities at MN Tech member companies. The Minnesota Technology Foundation supports diversity in this application and award process.

We also have Named Scholarships in specific areas supported by our generous sponsors. In the past, we have provided scholarships in Computer Science, STEM Education, Data Science, Women in STEM, Underrepresented Populations in STEM and Women in Computer Science. We encourage you to let students know of this additional and exceptional opportunity.

Eligibility requirements:

Must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in a STEM field or in STEM teaching
Only students with sophomore through senior academic status in the current school year may apply. Sophomore status may include students who have achieved this status through advanced placement (AP) credit or post-secondary options (PSEO)s
Applicants must be enrolled at an accredited, Minnesota-based higher education institution.
Scholarships will be awarded in the fall term of 2022 and presented to recipients at Minnesota Technology Association Tekne Awards in November. Students must be enrolled at time of award.

Special Circumstances

In addition to traditional STEM fields, health science majors whose studies will NOT lead to participation in direct patient care are welcome to apply.
The scholarship is open to international students, but preference is given to students who intend to work in Minnesota after graduation.
Past scholarship winners are eligible to re-apply as long as they meet the rest of the requirements listed here.

CampusClear Symptom Reporting App Closing Down May 31, 2022

CampusClear has been provided to schools for free by Ivy.ai (they power the chatbot on the Financial Aid website) and the time has come for Ivy.ai to shut down the app. The app will be closing down on May 31, 2022.

We thank all of you for using the app these past 21 months. Taking a minute to consider how you’re feeling before coming to campus was important as the campus worked to manage COVID-19.

Feel free to delete the app from your phone at your convenience.

TODAY: Applications Are Now Open for the 2022-23 PRISM Scholars Program

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Fall 2022 (graduating by December ‘24)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher (scholars will be expected to raise their GPA to 3.0 during program participation)
– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Wednesday, May 18 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Friday, May 27 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application)

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.
