The LEAD (Leaders for Equity, Action & Democracy) Fellows Program focuses on student leadership development through off-campus, community-strengthening work in which they are working to address social issues such as education inequity, food insecurity, housing instability, etc. Students attend regular cohort meetings to reflect together on their work, cultivate critical analysis of the issues they’re working to address, and develop leadership skills.

In addition to being an active member of the leadership cohort, students will have access to paid internships both on and off campus in position that focus on social change work.

Apply now to take the fall semester Model United Nations course, POL 368. Members of this class will participate in the American ModelUnited Nations from November 20-23, 2021, held in Chicago, IL.

In this course, you will gain in-depth understanding of the United Nations and international diplomacy through the process of preparation for attending the conference in November. Students research a country and set of issues for the committee on which they will serve.

The fall 2021 Augsburg delegation will be representing the countries of Guatemala, Namibia and Sweden. In addition, a focus of the class will also be the study of indigenous peoples and their connection to theUnited Nations, with emphasis on Canadian First Nations.

The conference provides experiential learning that enables you to develop a better understanding of the inner workings of the UN, and a forum to hone skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, compromise, public speaking, writing, and research. This opportunity is a great chance to put your learning into practice!

We will accept applications until September 1, 2021 or until the program fills.

Prerequisite: students must complete thePOL 160 course before Fall 2021, or have relevant equivalent academic experience.

We ask the campus community to help welcome Ramona Tran as our newest Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions (she joins the first year team along with Josh Owens, Nicole Borwege, and Shonna Fulford).

Ramona comes to us from The College of St. Scholastica where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Organizational Behavior (’19) and her MBA in Leadership & Change (’21), and served as the Area Coordinator for Residence Life. Her experience in higher education, her energy, and her passion for working with first generation students will make her an asset to our team and to the larger Augsburg community! Ramona’s first day will be Monday, May 17th.

We also welcome Tim Lawson, the newest Assistant Director of Transfer Admissions (joining Katie Asfeld and Paul Kienberger). Tim is a proud two time Augsburg grad, first with his Bachelor’s in 2009 and then with his MBA in 2015. He lives in Minnetonka with his wife, two daughters, and Bernese Mountain dog. Tim says, “I wanted to take this opportunity to express how excited I am to be joining the team and the Augsburg community. I am looking forward to meeting you and learning from you all.” Tim’s first day will be Tuesday, June 1.

The Campus Kitchen Food Lab (HAGFORS 108) will be open this summer (May-August). The limit of individuals available in the Food Lab is 10 people at times (including Campus Kitchen student workers). The hours for Open Cooking Hours are always from 6-8pm biweekly on Wednesdays.
Food Lab Open Cooking Hours:
Campus Kitchen hosts open cooking hours in the Food Lab (Hagfors 108)! Attending Open Hours is a great way to experiment with various recipes and cooking techniques. The Food Lab is stocked with a variety of cooking appliances available for student use. We have some ingredients available to share, and please bring your own as well.
Food Lab Workshops:
The purpose of Food Lab Workshop is to teach the Augsburg community how to cook a variety of dishes and build community through food. Everything from the ingredients (e.g. Oil and Seasonings) to cooking appliances are provided for students attending workshops. If you are interested in hosting a workshop, email campuskitchen@augsburg.edu.
Anyone who is interested in attending a workshop or open cooking hours, please select the dates you are attending. PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE DATES ARE FIRST COME FIRST SERVE.

This month Nick Huseby joined the integrated Augsburg University/Luther Seminary marketing team. In his role as web manager and front-end developer, Nick leads web development, design, and content for Augsburg’s WordPress-based sites. Nick will work with content managers to ensure websites are accurate, follow accessibility and usability best practices, and adhere to brand standards. Nick holds a bachelor’s degree from Concordia College and a master’s degree from Luther Seminary. He was most recently employed at a startup based in the Washington, D.C. area. Attend the 2021 Leadership Summit May 19 — there is no registration fee

The Leadership Summit is back! Join us for the 2021 Augsburg/Midway Chamber of Commerce Leadership Summit – live/zoom format.

The noon keynote speaker for this year’s summit will be President Paul Pribbenow “New Protocols: Life and Work Together after a Pandemic” His presentation will be preceded by an 11am session led by MAL alum Carole Burton on “Equity, Blind Spots, and Perfectionism: The Why’s, How’s, and impact on ROTI”

Augsburg faculty, staff, and graduate students will be able to attend this year’s summit free, but pre-registration is required. If interested, please contact Alan Tuchtenhagen at tuchten@augsburg.edu by Friday May 14. You may attend one or both sessions.

TODAY at 9 am: Online Resources for Student Mental Health and Wellness Facilitated by Melissa Hensley

Spending time online can be anxiety provoking for students, but it can also be a potent source of help and guidance. There are many good online resources to help with anxiety, depression, and other signs of mental health problems. Online communities for people coping with mental health conditions also exist. This workshop will introduce participants to some useful online resources for students dealing with mental health conditions and the people who support them.

The LEAD (Leaders for Equity, Action & Democracy) Fellows Program focuses on student leadership development through off-campus, community-strengthening work in which they are working to address social issues such as education inequity, food insecurity, housing instability, etc. Students attend regular cohort meetings to reflect together on their work, cultivate critical analysis of the issues they’re working to address, and develop leadership skills.

In addition to being an active member of the leadership cohort, students will have access to paid internships both on and off campus in position that focus on social change work.

Augsburg CGEE has extended the deadline to June 15th for our Fall Semester programs in Mexico, Namibia and Central America, and to June 30th for the USA Program on the Mississippi River. You can use your financial aid, plus a $1500 Travel grant for the international programs.

Curt Rice graduated from Augsburg in 1984, and has since then dedicated his life to education. Curt and his wife, Tove Dahl (also an Augsburg alum and Dean of Skogfjorden, Concordia Language Village) have lived in Norway for decades, served in many higher education institutions, including OsloMet and the University of Tromsø. Curt is ending his time at OsloMet to serve as the new rector of Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU).

Augsburg’s Norway Hub and the ISSS office always look to create new and maintain established partnerships with Norwegian institutions. We hope to add NMBU to our list of partners in the years to come.

Thank you is not adequate to express my heartfelt gratitude to so many of you who joined my virtual retirement gathering last week and have sent emails of congratulations.   After 20 years of service to Augsburg, I am off to start a new journey of retirement with my husband, do some travelling, spend more time at our lake cabin and provide some daycare to our two grandchildren including the birth of a new granddaughter.
Augsburg has been a wonderful home for me during the past 20 years in my work at the Center for Wellness and Counseling.  I have always been a passionate advocate for students and it’s students who energized me most everyday I came to campus. We have an incredible student body here at Augsburg and the mission of the University is to be commended. 
My appreciation and thanks especially to my colleagues at CWC and my supervisor, Nancy Guilbeault and to so many of you I have truly been privileged to meet and work with over these many years.  I am grateful for having had the opportunity to serve students and to be a colleague to so many incredibly talented people.

As the end of the academic year has arrived please make sure to check your campus mailbox. This includes checking it for any mail, returning your lock and filing out the digital survey for what you would like us to do with your mail after this semester.

Two weeks after the spring semester ends (May 16 2021) we will be closing all student campus boxes unless otherwise notified. Before the fall semester starts we will reassign campus boxes to all residential students. Commuter students can then request to have a campus box if they would like one.

If you would like your mail forwarded or would like to keep your mailbox open for the summer, please either fill out this survey ( https://forms.gle/7VW5CUfDmkzoHVTL6 ) or send us an email (mailship@augsburg.edu) with any relevant information. There is also an option to be keep your current campus box number for the next semester if you will be returning in the fall. If you do not fill out the survey, we will close your campus box and return to sender any mail in the box.

We are only able to forward 1st Class USPS mail and packages. Other packages (UPS, FedEx, Amazon, etc.), magazines, non-profit mail and standard mail will be returned to sender or recycled. We can also only forward to US addresses. The forwarding period for the Augsburg Mailroom is two months from when the request is submitted (July 16 2021). Afterward any additional mail we receive will be returned to sender.

We request that you contact the people/business sending you mail and update your address with them. Enrolling in online/electronic bills or statements can also be a smart option, it is environmentally friendly, secure and will often save you time (and sometimes money). Asking us to forward your mail does not change your mailing address with the USPS or the University, just the Mailroom.

This week Nick Huseby joined the integrated Augsburg University/Luther Seminary marketing team. In his role as web manager and front-end developer, Nick leads web development, design, and content for Augsburg’s WordPress-based sites. Nick will work with content managers to ensure websites are accurate, follow accessibility and usability best practices, and adhere to brand standards.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities.

Our Spanish Debate League is designed to affirm & empower Spanish-speaking students. The program is held entirely in Spanish.

Spanish Debate League is being held 100% virtually this year in response to COVID-19. This year’s topic is the impact of social media on society. We need volunteer judges! Can you help?

All rounds and judging will be entirely in Spanish. Judges watch debate rounds and then evaluate teams on argumentation, logic, and public speaking skills. Judges must be fluent in Spanish, but no prior judging experience is necessary to volunteer; judges receive a short training and all necessary materials prior to the start of tournaments.

We have one final opportunity to communicate with Gov. Tim Walz and key state legislators about the importance of helping Augsburg students by increasing funding for the State Grant program. These need-based grants impact 48% of Augsburg undergraduate students.

The current legislative session is coming to a close, and now is a critical time to ask Minnesotan policymakers to invest in college students and increase the size of the State Grant. In February, your support helped send over 1,500 messages to Gov. Walz and elected officials.

You can advocate for the State Grant program by utilizing the Minnesota Private College Council’s advocacy system, Advocates for Minnesota Student Aid, by clicking the link below. To honor the Augsburg Class of 2021 and mark the completion of their studies, Campus Ministry would like to offer two online services that would usually have been held on campus. The entire Augsburg community is invited to participate in these services.

The first is our Baccalaureate Service https://youtu.be/xAJYkbpYj3M, which is a festive service of music and word held for the graduating class, friends, and family members celebrating the completion of your studies at Augsburg and offering our blessings to you as you go out into the world. This is a Christian worship service, open to all. The online service this year is filled with joy and thanksgiving. Pastor Justin Lind-Ayres offers a blessing sermon for the class and the service features music performed by University Organist Mark Sedio, the Global Harmony choir, and student singers. As the end of the academic year has arrived please make sure to check your campus mailbox. This includes checking it for any mail, returning your lock and filing out the digital survey for what you would like us to do with your mail after this semester.

Two weeks after the spring semester ends (May 16 2021) we will be closing all student campus boxes unless otherwise notified. Before the fall semester starts we will reassign campus boxes to all residential students. Commuter students can then request to have a campus box if they would like one.

If you would like your mail forwarded or would like to keep your mailbox open for the summer, please either fill out this survey ( https://forms.gle/7VW5CUfDmkzoHVTL6 ) or send us an email (mailship@augsburg.edu) with any relevant information. There is also an option to be keep your current campus box number for the next semester if you will be returning in the fall. If you do not fill out the survey, we will close your campus box and return to sender any mail in the box.

We are only able to forward 1st Class USPS mail and packages. Other packages (UPS, FedEx, Amazon, etc.), magazines, non-profit mail and standard mail will be returned to sender or recycled. We can also only forward to US addresses. The forwarding period for the Augsburg Mailroom is two months from when the request is submitted (July 16 2021). Afterward any additional mail we receive will be returned to sender.

We request that you contact the people/business sending you mail and update your address with them. MDAW is a collaborative effort between The Minnesota Urban Debate League (a program of Augsburg University) and The University of Minnesota Debate Team. Our goal is to increase access to speech & debate for schools, coaches, and students entering 5th – 12th grade providing a high quality, virtual summer camp experience to students in the Twin Cities Metro, the Upper Midwest region, and across the US!

Our Spanish Debate League is designed to affirm & empower Spanish-speaking students. The program is held entirely in Spanish.

Spanish Debate League is being held 100% virtually this year in response to COVID-19. This year’s topic is the impact of social media on society. We need volunteer judges! Can you help?

All rounds and judging will be entirely in Spanish. Judges watch debate rounds and then evaluate teams on argumentation, logic, and public speaking skills. Judges must be fluent in Spanish, but no prior judging experience is necessary to volunteer; judges receive a short training and all necessary materials prior to the start of tournaments.

Apply now to take the fall semester Model United Nations course, POL 368. Members of this class will participate in the American Model United Nations from November 20-23, 2021, held in Chicago, IL.

In this course, you will gain in-depth understanding of the United Nations and international diplomacy through the process of preparation for attending the conference in November. Students research a country and set of issues for the committee on which they will serve.

The fall 2021 Augsburg delegation will be representing the countries of Guatemala, Namibia and Sweden. In addition, a focus of the class will also be the study of indigenous peoples and their connection to the United Nations, with emphasis on Canadian First Nations.

The conference provides experiential learning that enables you to develop a better understanding of the inner workings of the UN, and a forum to hone skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, compromise, public speaking, writing, and research. This opportunity is a great chance to put your learning into practice!

Priority Application deadline is May 1, 2021 to apply on the Study Abroad/Away site.

Prerequisite: students must complete the POL 160 course before Fall 2021, or have relevant equivalent academic experience.

The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, AugSTEM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Fall 2021 (graduating by December ‘23)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher (scholars will be expected to raise their GPA to 3.0 during program participation)
– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

The MN 5th Congressional District Office can advance a limited number of projects for the Community Project Funding appropriations bill. We’ve submitted a proposal for $175,000 to bring even more debate programming to Twin Cities students! This could be a game changer- but we can’t do it alone.

How Can You Help?

TODAY: please contact U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar’s office via phone and/or email and share why YOU want to support the MNUDL. The messages can be very short, but each message is like your “vote” of support. Phone calls typically count much more (like 5-7x more) so if you have the time to call- that’s even better!

Two steps:
1 ) Make sure you include “MNUDL” and support for funding our “Community Program Funding Proposal” in any message, so they know what you’re supporting.

The LEAD (Leaders for Equity, Action & Democracy) Fellows Program focuses on student leadership development through off-campus, community-strengthening work in which they are working to address social issues such as education inequity, food insecurity, housing instability, etc. Students attend regular cohort meetings to reflect together on their work, cultivate critical analysis of the issues they’re working to address, and develop leadership skills.

In addition to being an active member of the leadership cohort, students will have access to paid internships both on and off campus in position that focus on social change work.

Dianne Detloff’s retirement celebration is on Thursday, May 6th from 2:30 – 3:30 PM.
Come with your memories, stories, appreciation and good wishes for Dianne.

With more than twenty years of dedicated service, Dianne has worked as the Administrative Program Coordinator in the Center for Wellness and Counseling (CWC). She has welcomed thousands of students seeking CWC services. In her position at CWC, she organized a multitude of wellbeing events, such as, the Annual CWC Health Fairs, blood drives with the Memorial Blood Center, and flu shot Clinics with Hennepin Health Care. Dianne provided the leadership for the Augsburg student EPIC program and was a mentor and supervisor for the students. Many students found meeting with the dogs from Paws for learning lowered their stress and would come to CWC or other locations on campus to be with the beloved dogs from Paws for Learning.

The LEAD (Leaders for Equity, Action & Democracy) Fellows Program focuses on student leadership development through off-campus, community-strengthening work in which they are working to address social issues such as education inequity, food insecurity, housing instability, etc. Students attend regular cohort meetings to reflect together on their work, cultivate critical analysis of the issues they’re working to address, and develop leadership skills.

In addition to being an active member of the leadership cohort, students will have access to paid internships both on and off campus in position that focus on social change work.

The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, AugSTEM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Fall 2021 (graduating by December ‘23)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher (scholars will be expected to raise their GPA to 3.0 during program participation)
– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Wednesday, May 19 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Friday, May 28 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application)

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

Apply now to take the fall semester Model United Nations course, POL 368. Members of this class will participate in the American Model United Nations from November 20-23, 2021, held in Chicago, IL.

In this course, you will gain in-depth understanding of the United Nations and international diplomacy through the process of preparation for attending the conference in November. Students research a country and set of issues for the committee on which they will serve.

The fall 2021 Augsburg delegation will be representing the countries of Guatemala, Namibia and Sweden. In addition, a focus of the class will also be the study of indigenous peoples and their connection to the United Nations, with emphasis on Canadian First Nations.

The conference provides experiential learning that enables you to develop a better understanding of the inner workings of the UN, and a forum to hone skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, compromise, public speaking, writing, and research. This opportunity is a great chance to put your learning into practice!

Priority Application deadline is May 1, 2021 to apply on the Study Abroad/Away site.

Prerequisite: students must complete the POL 160 course before Fall 2021, or have relevant equivalent academic experience.

Counselors are needed to work at Scrubs Camp at Augsburg from July 7 – July 9, 2021; 9:00AM – 4:00 PM daily. Counselors will earn $375 for the three day camp. Scrubs Camp is coordinated by HealthForce Minnesota and provides opportunities for high school students to explore health careers by engaging in interactive sessions led by health care professionals. Two weeks after the spring semester ends (May 16 2021) we will be closing all student campus boxes unless otherwise notified. Before the fall semester starts we will reassign campus boxes to all residential students. Commuter students can then request to have a campus box if they would like one.

There is also an option to be keep your current campus box number for the next semester if you will be returning in the fall. The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is hiring an AmeriCorps VISTA member to build capacity for its Spanish Debate League and East African Debate programs. The role will begin in August 2021.

Our Community Debate Liaison will carry out these capacity-building activities:

– Serve as a liaison for our community-focused debate programs
– Establish and maintain relationships with Latinx-serving and East African-serving organizations, including with universities and corporate affinity groups
– Build volunteer pipelines for Spanish Debate League and East African Debate Initiative programs
– Conduct community surveys and interviews to be used for program improvement and fundraising
– Write powerful grant writing and fundraising appeals focused specifically on Spanish Debate & East African Debate opportunities
– Parent and family engagement of students within these programs

We are seeking organized individuals with strong communication skills and a passion for youth voice & education. Spanish, Somali, and/or Oromo language fluency a plus. Does this sound like you?

AmeriCorps is a great opportunity for recent grads. People who complete a year of service will receive a $6,345 AmeriCorps Segal Education Award, which can be applied to student loans or future education expenses. You’ll also gain sought-after skills in the nonprofit sector.
