After more than 30 years of dedicated service to Augsburg and our surrounding communities, Mary Laurel True will be moving on. Her last day is Friday, April 16. She will bring her great skill and passion for community engagement to a new position at the Community Action Center of Northfield.

We will have a farewell gathering for Mary Laurel in May when the weather is warmer and we can be outdoors. Please watch for the date to be set soon, and in the meantime, wish her best of luck and many thanks for all that she has given Augsburg.

Applications are Now Open for the 2021-22 AugSTEM Scholars Program

The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, AugSTEM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Fall 2021 (graduating by December ‘23)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher (scholars will be expected to raise their GPA to 3.0 during program participation)
– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Thursday, May 13 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Tuesday, May 25 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application)

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

Sad News – Orlette Tatley

Orlette Tatley, a former Augsburg staff member, died on April 2, 2021. After many years of service in the library,Tatley retired in 1996. Prior to that she had worked in the college bookstore. She is remembered not only for her role on staff, but also for her enduring and generous support of Augsburg in numerous ways including as a dedicated volunteer with the Augsburg Associates. Service information is pending, updates will be available through Washburn-McReavy Funeral Home.

Boyd Koehler, associate professor emeritus, offered these words of remembrance:
“I worked closely with her at Augsburg University in the library for almost a decade and was struck by the impact she had on so many faculty, staff, and students. She was a genius in her ability to make the library a very welcoming atmosphere and also was a stellar role model for students. She created a lasting impression for all of us with her strong work ethic, her incredible sense of humor, and her moral convictions. She was an indelible embodiment of the college’s commitment to academic excellence and dedication to truth.”

The editor of our “Arts & Culture” section is responsible for curating, editing and writing articles that provide coverage of artistic happenings and events in the Augsburg community. Some examples of A&C content includes articles that highlight cultural events on campus, spotlights the work of local artists, promotes artistic events happening in the local community, and even reviewing shows or albums by Augsburg artists. A bullet-point list of this position’s responsibilities are below:

-Be knowledgeable about artistic happenings and of artists in the Augsburg and greater Minneapolis community.
-Understand the components of a fair and adequate review.
-Plan photos in coordination with Photo Editor.
-Contribute to our welcoming and supporting team!

This position is paid $60 per newspaper issue (we release 10 issues every semester) and works 6 hours a week.

The LEAD (Leaders for Equity, Action & Democracy) Fellows Program focuses on student leadership development through off-campus, community-strengthening work in which they are working to address social issues such as education inequity, food insecurity, housing instability, etc. Students attend regular cohort meetings to reflect together on their work, cultivate critical analysis of the issues they’re working to address, and develop leadership skills.

In addition to being an active member of the leadership cohort, students will have access to paid internships both on and off campus in position that focus on social change work.

For Students Observing Ramadan

Dining services will be offering meals after sundown for students observing Ramadan. Ramadan should begin on April 12 at sundown.

From April 12 through April 29 (the last meal plan dinner for the semester), dining services will offer a meal for students observing Ramadan from 8:45-10pm each night. At these meal times, students may take with them the food needed for breakfast prior to sunrise. Please share this information with others.

The CGEE Mexico Site wants to thank all of you who gave generous contributions to support the 5 Rios-Sanchez children after the COVID deaths of Isabel Sanchez & Moises Rios, who were an important part of the Augsburg Mexico staff for many years. We are happy to report that the youngest (11-year-old Sliri) now has a refurbished computer in order to complete her online coursework. She is very excited about having her first computer, and we are hopeful that it will help her tremendously as she does her best to keep up her straight-A average in school and someday attend university, perhaps here at Augsburg.

Help Distribute Vaccines and Get One Too

The Augsburg Central Health Commons will be a hosting a vaccine event in downtown Minneapolis at Central Lutheran Church on Monday, April 19th and Monday, May 17th 9a-3pm. We are distributing the vaccines to marginalized communities in the area. We are looking for volunteers (both nurses and non-nurses) to help with the events of the day. Anyone who volunteers is eligible for a Pfizer vaccine. In order to receive the vaccine, you would need to be able to go to Central Lutheran Church on both dates to get both doses of the vaccine, but would only need to volunteer on one of the dates – not both. MN Urban Debate League Wins Ethical Leadership Award

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is one of two Minnesota nonprofits that has been honored with the 2021 Minnesota Ethical Leadership Award, presented by Synergy & Leadership Exchange.

The Minnesota Ethical Leadership Award was created by the Minnesota Character Council to spotlight character and ethical leadership development, honor organizations with exemplary efforts, motivate honorees for continued effort and success, and inspire others with examples to replicate.

Debate was recognized for helping to cultivate the leadership qualities of critical thinking, ethical argumentation, and empathy towards others.

MNUDL members will received the award and receive the virtual Character Recognition Awards ceremony on Tuesday, May 18.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide debate programming for Twin Cities middle and high school students. One of our spring programs is the Spanish Debate League, held entirely in Spanish.

Our program is an opportunity for middle and high school students to refine their Spanish proficiency be affirmed in their identity, and gain the benefits of debate- including public speaking, critical thinking, and academic skills.

Are you fluent in Spanish? Be a judge for the Spanish Debate League! You will listen to students’ speeches, give them constructive feedback, and pick a winner of the debate.

Tournaments are happening entirely virtually. No debate training? No problem. We will train you.

The LEAD Fellows Program focuses on student leadership development through off-campus, community-strengthening work in which they are working to address social issues such as education inequity, food insecurity, housing instability, etc. Students attend regular cohort meetings to reflect together on their work, cultivate critical analysis of the issues they’re working to address, and develop leadership skills.

In addition to being an active member of the leadership cohort, students will have access to paid internships both on and off campus in position that focus on social change work.

MNsure is offering a special enrollment period (SEP) for any Minnesotan who is uninsured or who is not currently enrolled in a qualified health plan through MNsure. The American Rescue Plan expands benefits to Minnesotans through MNsure.

For Students Observing Ramadan

Dining services will be offering meals after sundown for students observing Ramadan. Ramadan should begin on April 12 at sundown. From April 12 through April 29 (the last meal plan dinner for the semester), dining services will offer a meal for students observing Ramadan from 8:45-10pm each night. At these meal times, students may take with them the food needed for breakfast prior to sunrise. Please share this information with others.

MFA George Floyd Memorial Award

The Augsburg University MFA Program in Creative Writing is pleased to announce the winner of our George Floyd Memorial Award — the poet Valérie Déus.

Valérie Déus is a poet, film programmer, and radio show host. Her work has been featured in Minnesota Women’s Press, The Brooklyn Rail, Midway, Saint Paul Almanac, The BeZine and, most recently, A Garden of Black Joy anthology and Under Purple Skies: A Minneapolis Anthology. When she’s not writing, she is the host of Project 35, a local low-fi radio show featuring music from all over the diaspora and poetry on KRSM – 98.9 FM. She curates FilmNorth’s Cinema Lounge and is the Shorts Programmer for the Provincetown Film Society & Festival.

Augsburg University created this award to support and celebrate writers that show great promise in their ability to further dismantle anti-Black racism, racism, white supremacy, and other forms of oppression. The award covers the cost of tuition for the MFA program’s three required summer residency sessions and provides a reduced rate for the remaining credit hours needed for the degree.

Owing to the strength of the candidates for this award, Augsburg University was able to provide a second scholarship to Minnesota-based fiction writer Hawo Jama.

Deadline Tomorrow: Global Movements for Racial Justice

Final call! Seats are almost filled and the deadline is tomorrow.

The deadline has been extended for the summer Minneapolis-based course, “Anti-Apartheid and Black Lives Matter: Global Movements for Racial Justice.” Apply by Friday, April 2nd to enroll in this course that will satisfy your Augsburg Experience requirement.

In this two-week course, students will critically analyze the global racial unrest movements of the Southern Africa Anti-Apartheid system, and the racially motivated murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. This experience will introduce students to the understanding of how these movements became historical events and impacted policy and the visibilities on racial inequities that impact the Pan-Afrikan diaspora and all BIPOC communities. Hear from activists and experts in Minnesota, as well as those from South Africa and Namibia.

We will be in person in Minneapolis, and will visit sites of historic and cultural importance in Minnesota, such as the Mille Lacs Indian Museum and Trading Post, the Duluth Lynching Site to visit the Clayton-Jackson-McGhie Memorial, and George Floyd Memorial Square.

Dates are May 17 to May 28.

Mental Health Matters – New Student Organization

Mental Health Matters is an open, safe, and friendly community regarding mental health, and the group will work to end mental health stigmas by educating students on mental illness, coping, and managing stress. We will host guest speakers and provide resources to end stigma. This organization does not provide counseling and is not a support group. Our first event will be on April 5th at 6 p.m. and there will be more details in the next week. Deadline Extension: Global Movements for Racial Justice

The deadline has been extended for the summer Minneapolis-based course, “Anti-Apartheid and Black Lives Matter: Global Movements for Racial Justice.” Apply by Friday, April 2nd to enroll in this course that will satisfy your Augsburg Experience requirement.

In this two-week course, students will critically analyze the global racial unrest movements of the Southern Africa Anti-Apartheid system, and the racially motivated murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. This experience will introduce students to the understanding of how these movements became historical events and impacted policy and the visibilities on racial inequities that impact the Pan-Afrikan diaspora and all BIPOC communities. Hear from activists and experts in Minnesota, as well as those from South Africa and Namibia.

We will be in person in Minneapolis, and will visit sites of historic and cultural importance in Minnesota, such as the Mille Lacs Indian Museum and Trading Post, the Duluth Lynching Site to visit the Clayton-Jackson-McGhie Memorial, and George Floyd Memorial Square.

Dates are May 17 to May 28.

Interested in Grad School? Apply to TRIO McNair Scholars Program

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2021 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2022 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2022. We are particularly looking for students in STEM fields that are interested in pursuing doctoral degrees, but we will consider all majors EXCEPT most professional fields (including business, pre-law, pre-health).

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000+) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2022.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred).

Last Days to Complete College Student Health Survey

Friday March 26th – TOMORROW is the last day students can submit the 2021 College Student Health Survey. Augsburg University is partnering with the University of MN to administer the 2021 College Student Health Survey which has been sent via email to Augsburg student email addresses. The survey asks for information on a variety of college student health topics. Please take the time to complete the survey. Those participating in doing the survey will be entered into a drawing for Amazon gift cards – First place $1000, 2nd place $500, 3rd place $250 and 5 fourth place gift cards of $50 each. Thirteen universities are participating and one student from each school will win a $100 Amazon gift card. We want your input so please participate in the 2021 College Student Health Survey. Augsburg Asian Student Association (AASA), Hmong Women Together (HWT), and Pan Asian Student Services(PASS) recognizes that anti-AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islanders) prejudice is only one form of systematic racism that continues to spread in our nation. Together, we appreciate the outpour of outreach and attention from Administration, peers and allies in support of the recent events in Georgia last week and our daily lived experiences.

We hope that there will be work in solidarity from Augsburg to take a stand against the structures that perpetuate and fuel discrimination for all BIPOC and specifically recently more heightened assaults on Pan-Asians in our communities, and to identify actionable ways to address this and all forms of prejudice, stigmatization, and racism.

We hereby recommend for you to join us in the following spaces at Augsburg to continue these conversations and to help us come together in community:

Come Into Full Bloom with TutorMe

Students – don’t forget about TutorMe! It is available to Augsburg students 24/7 and offers tutoring in over 300 subjects from qualified tutors. Students are able to use 3 hours a week; 3 one hour sessions or 6 thirty-minute sessions. You can access TutorMe through any of your Moodle classes. At the top left of your screen there is an orange tab to see the side panel of resources. As you scroll down, you will see the “Augsburg Tools” section and underneath is the link to TutorMe.
