Matching Fund for Donations in Response to the George Floyd Murder

submitted by alamilla@augsburg.edu

We have established a fund of $20,000 to match donations from students, faculty and staff to nonprofit organizations in the Twin Cities that are doing important work to combat racism, meet the needs of our neighbors, and help to rebuild communities and businesses. We have chosen four organizations with which Augsburg has important ties and we now are ready to launch the matching fund.

Any gift to one or more of these four organizations from a member of the Augsburg community will be matched dollar for dollar. The four organizations are:

MIGIZI (migizi.org): MIGIZI was founded in 1977 as Migizi Communications, Inc., with a goal of countering the misrepresentations and inaccuracies about Native people in the media. MIGIZI’s first weekly radio production, The Native American Program, set the stage for First Person Radio and its nationally distributed programming. Today, First Person Productions is a multimedia training effort for Native youth aimed at providing state-of-the-art storytelling skills, enhancing self-esteem and improving academic performance. Additional MIGIZI efforts address youth needs in jobs, culture, leadership and more. MIGIZI’s building was destroyed in the violence that ensued after George Floyd’s murder.

JUXTAPOSITION ARTS (juxtapositionarts.org): Juxtaposition Arts develops community by engaging and employing young urban artists in hands-on education initiatives that create pathways to self-sufficiency while actualizing creative power. Black, POCI and other youth are already building the abundant and just future they envision. Help amplify the creativity of young artists in ways that improve our city.

PILLSBURY UNITED COMMUNITIES (pillsburyunited.org): Pillsbury United Communities co-creates enduring change toward a just society. Built with and for the people we serve, our united system of programs, neighborhood centers, and social enterprises empowers individuals and families across the region to own their future on their own terms. The Brian Coyle Center in Cedar-Riverside is one of Pillsbury’s community centers.

NORTHSIDE ACHIEVEMENT ZONE (northsideachievement.org): The Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ) exists to permanently close the achievement gap and end generational poverty in North Minneapolis. Together with our partner organizations, we are walking side by side with low-income families as they put their children on a path to college.

To qualify for matching funds, Augsburg community members should make a gift to one of these organizations between now and the end of July and send a copy of a donation receipt to Cyndi Berg (bergc2@augsburg) in the President’s office. Please note:request for matching funds, in the subject line. After August 1, we will total the gifts to each of the organizations and send matching funds equal to the total donated.

The matching funds are made possible through gifts to the President’s Strategic Fund, which were contributed by alumni and friends of Augsburg this past spring.

This matching fund program is simply one way in which the Augsburg community can take concrete action to live up to our personal and institutional commitments to the values of anti-racism and community building. We believe that Augsburg is called to be a neighbor to the communities that surround our campus.

Want to Be in the Loop When Moodle or Another IT Service is Down?

submitted by krajewsk@augsburg.edu

Launched at the start of 2020, the IT Status Page has the current status of IT systems and services.

https://au-ls-it-status.statushub.io/

On this page you can subscribe to receive email or text alerts about major service issues (you can even select which services you care about – moodle, telecom, internet, etc). Please keep in mind a human still has to create the alerts and in some cases solving the problem will take priority over updating the status page. Some updates may come after the fact.

Our hope is that this empowers you, if you’re interested, to receive updates about major service issues that you care about.

Changing Password Remotely – Tips to Prevent Computer Lockout

submitted by vachta@augsburg.edu

Faculty and staff using Augsburg owned computers remotely may encounter login issues after updating Augnet passwords remotely because the new password will not be synced with the computer until it returns to the campus network.

You should always change your password from the “Change Password” link on Inside Augsburg. Once you return to campus and log into the computer while connected to the Augsburg WiFi or LAN network, the computer password will update.

However, if your computer does not sync the password before its original expiration date, the computer itself may still prompt you to change your password. We do NOT recommend changing the password if you see this prompt – this password will not sync with Augnet and may result in you being locked out.

To prevent login issues, faculty and staff should consider updating their password on campus before their current password expires.

For more information on updating your password visit http://go.augsburg.edu/pwupdate

A Prayer for Juneteenth

submitted by dames@augsburg.edu

Juneteenth is the oldest African American celebration of emancipation from slavery. President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863, but news of emancipation moved slowly. Texas was the most remote of the slave states, and the Emancipation Proclamation was not enforced there until two and a half years later, after the Civil War had ended. When the Union army arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865 announcing that all “slaves” were free in accordance with the Emancipation Proclamation that the last slave experienced freedom. The name of the observance is a portmanteau of “June” and “nineteenth”, the date of its celebration.

Pastor Babette Chatman, University Pastor, offers this prayer in celebration of Juneteenth: https://www.augsburg.edu/campusministry/2020/06/18/a-prayer-for-juneteenth/

Virtual Volunteer Opportunities with Catchafire

submitted by grayk2@augsburg.edu

Did you know volunteering can help advance your career? Volunteering can help you gain experience in your area of interest and meet people in the field. In addition, volunteering gives you the opportunity to practice the skills employers value most in their new college hires. NACE’s Job Outlook survey reports that critical thinking/problem solving, teamwork/collaboration, professionalism/work ethic, and oral/written communications are all essential competencies.
Consider volunteering virtually with Catchafire. Catchafire strengthens the social good sector by matching professionals who want to donate their time with nonprofits who need their skills.
If you need help identifying additional volunteer opportunities this summer, the Strommen Career & Internship Center is here to help! We recommend scheduling an appointment with a career coach in Handshake to talk through your options.

Four COVID-19 Testing Sites Open in Twin Cities

submitted by alamilla@augsburg.edu

Four testing centers opened Tuesday in the Twin Cities to test people who were part of George Floyd protests, cleanup efforts or observing the protests for COVID-19. The centers are open for three successive Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from noon to 6 p.m.

The Holy Trinity Church on East Lake Street in Minneapolis

The Sabathani Community Center on East 38th Street in Minneapolis

The New Salem Baptist Church on Bryant Avenue North in Minneapolis

The Jimmy Lee Recreation Center on Lexington Parkway in St. Paul

The testing is free and available to anyone — with or without symptoms. Health officials are urging people who may have participated in protests, cleanup and recovery efforts, vigils, neighborhood defense meetings to be tested, and asking people to make appointments for the tests through the Department of Health website.

Congratulations, Amanda Erdman

submitted by griesse@augsburg.edu

I am pleased for Amanda Erdman to announce that she has taken a new position and sad to say she will be leaving Augsburg. She has given Augsburg University 13 years of leadership, dedication, and heart. Arriving on campus in 2007, Amanda opened the Oren Gateway Center as the newest residence hall on campus and the new home of the StepUP program. She has long been a supporter of the recovery community. In her role as Director of Residence Life, she hired, trained, and worked with countless professional staff, many of whom continued in higher education providing leadership on campuses across the Midwest. As an administrator, Amanda demonstrated precision and creativity in occupancy management. Her budgeting and analysis expertise led her to accept a new position as property manager analyst. June 23 will be Amanda’s last day working at Augsburg University, but she will always be an Auggie. Please join me in thanking Amanda for her many contributions to our campus. She will be missed.

Involved in Protests, Vigils, or Neighborhood Events? Consider Covid-19 Testing

submitted by guilbeau@augsburg.edu

STAY SAFE IN MN – MESSAGE from the MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH

“COVID-19 can spread easily and quickly in large groups of people who are close together for long periods of time. Some people do not have symptoms but can still spread the virus to others.”

If you participated in a protest, vigil, or other neighborhood event, you should get tested. These community sites are specifically designed to serve those who live in most impacted neighborhoods and the immediate surrounding community.

The State of Minnesota is offering COVID-19 testing to people living in the communities impacted by recent large gatherings in the Twin Cities area. If you do not live in these neighborhoods, we encourage all other Minnesotans to be tested at their local clinic.”
