May Sarton Poem – After a Winter’s Silence

submitted by guilbeau@augsburg.edu

Seeing all the plants pushing through the earth, the flowers opening, buds on the trees, birds
singing, and the color green painting the leaves everywhere…..gives me hope and delight. I thought of a favorite poem to share with you. BE WELL. Nancy Guilbeault – CWC

After a Winter’s Silence

Along the terrace wall

Snowdrops have pushed through

hard ice, making a pool.

Delicate stems now show

White bells as though

The force, the thrust to flower

Were nothing at all.

Who gives them the power?

After a winter’s silence

I feel the shock of spring.

My breath warms like the sun,

Melts ice, bursts into song,

So when that inner one

Gives life back the power

To rise up and push through,

There’s nothing to it.

We simply have to do it,

As snowdrops know

When snowdrops flower.

Campus Box Closing/Forwarding

submitted by suter@augsburg.edu

Two weeks after the spring semester ends (May 15th) we will be closing all student campus boxes. Before fall semester starts we will be reassigning them to all students living on campus, and commuter students can then request to have a campus box if they have a need of one.

If you would like your mail forwarded or would like to keep your mailbox open for the summer please either fill out this survey (https://forms.gle/LaGrUkgCRvbVxVsZ8) or send us an email with any relevant information. (There is also an option to be reassigned your current box for the next semester if you will be returning in the fall)

We only forward 1st Class USPS mail and packages. Other packages (UPS, FedEx, Amazon, etc), magazines, non-profit mail and standard mail will not be forwarded. We can only forward to US addresses. The forwarding period is 2 months from when the request is submitted after which any additional mail we receive will be returned to sender.

We ask that you contact the people/business sending you mail and correcting it to your permanent address. Also enrolling in online/electronic billing is both environmentally friendly and will save you time (and sometimes money).

When in Doubt, Fill it Out – Fill Out Your Census Form

submitted by aoki@augsburg.edu

Make sure you’re counted! Students–fill out the census unless you’re certain someone else has already counted you on their form.

Got to 2020census.gov and fill out the form online. If there’s a question you’d rather not answer, skip it, but fill out the rest of the form. Responses are confidential–no law enforcement agencies are allowed access to these census forms.

If you’re living off-campus but not with your parents, you should fill out your own form. Students who lived on campus this semester will be counted by Res Life, so you don’t need to fill out a form. If you’re not certain if you’ve been counted–fill out a form! The Census Bureau would rather have people double-counted than missed.

Political representation, billions in federal funding, and much more is at stake. Don’t let yourself be invisible–filling out the census is a way of making sure your presence counts!

Top 3 Things Students Need to Know This Week

68/20: One Day in May History + Art + Change

submitted by wangleon@augsburg.edu

ONE DAY IN MAY took place on May 15, 1968. During the turbulent aftermath of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Augsburg canceled classes to fully engage the school and community members on the issue of racism.

The extraordinary discourse surrounding ONE DAY IN MAY gave rise to subsequent advocacy work of marginalized students. These efforts have created a lasting impact that can be seen and felt on today’s Augsburg campus.

ADSG 2020-2021 Resolution #1

submitted by musset@augsburg.edu

Good morning to all,

I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe.

On Wednesday, April 23rd, 2020, Augsburg Day Student Government passed a resolution titled Augsburg University International Students Responding to ISSS Department Restructuring.

This resolution was made for International Students who had their advisor Angela Bonfiglio laid off. With her absence, students began to feel like they lost their primary support and mentorship. This resolution demands Augsburg University to provide free housing to international students throughout the summer, provide summer jobs to those who have student visas, request for reinstatement of Angela Bonfiglio, and that ISSS be deemed as an official party recognized under the MSS roster.

Any questions or comments about this resolution, please let me know. You can contact me through my email ortizrg@augsburg.edu

Blessing to you all. Have a great weekend!!

It’s Earth Day, friends

submitted by greena@augsburg.edu

Happy 50th Anniversary of Earth Day! Take a break sometime today to care for each other and this planet we call home. There’s is much to grieve these days, and also much to celebrate. Do both today if that’s what you need. Read a poem, sing a song, learn a bird call, bring groceries to your neighbor, call a legislator, go for a hike, make a sign for your window, watch a documentary, drink an extra glass of water and give a cheers to the Clean Water Act. So many options! Find more ways to participate on the document below. And if you participate in the special #AuggieEarthWeek2020 event, fill out the form linked in the document for a chance to win a sustainability care package!

“Earth care, as it turns out, is really about self-care and other-care. What we design today impacts how we live tomorrow. For better or for worse, it impacts far into upcoming generations.”

Please help meet the increasing need for food in the Cedar Riverside neighborhood by making a financial contribution today. Each $1 donated enables the Brian Coyle Center to purchase $7 worth of food for distribution to neighborhood residents. To donate, go to https://pillsburyunited.org/covid19/. Want to Help the Homeless from Your Home?

submitted by clarkk@augsburg.edu

COVID-19 is currently spreading in the homeless shelters and encampments with many confirmed cases. We are looking for volunteers who would be willing to call the governor and mayor to immediately evacuate shelters and place individuals into hotels. In light of the St. Paul woman who was accidentally bulldozed while her camp was being evicted, we are also calling the state, city and park board to explicitly allow encampments by opening park grounds and facilities as well. We are organizing this through phone zap where we call and ask for this to be addressed in an organized effort.

You can sign up to make a phone call or more here https://calendly.com/housing-phonezap/phonezap-shift-signup?month=2020-04.

Also, you can find us at https://www.facebook.com/cantstayhomewithouthousing/. Thank you for considering.

The Augsburg Podcast S3, E5 – Hannah Dyson: Putting the “Story” in “History”

submitted by chambek2@augsburg.edu

Hannah Dyson discovered a remarkable overlap in her theatre and history interests when interning at the MN Historical Society. Writing stories for MNopedia about fraudulent towns and journalistic assassinations, Hannah developed a passion for storytelling that connects past and present – and her Augsburg and historical society mentors have helped her focus her ambitions. Her storytelling explores justice and freedom of press both historically and in our own future.
