Building Hours for the Election Day Holiday, November 7

Election day is tomorrow and Augsburg University will be observing a holiday to allow people a chance to get to the polls and vote. Please see below for building hours during the Election Day holiday on November 7.

– Christensen Center (polling location) – Open to the public 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
– Lindell Library – Open via fob access 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
– Athletic Facilities – Open normal hours via fob access, 6:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.
– All other academic buildings – closed
– Residence halls – normal operations

Normal building hours will resume on Wednesday, November 8. Please call the Department of Public Safety at (612) 330-1717, or email publicsafety@augsburg.edu if you have any questions.

Boren Scholarship for Language Study Abroad

The Boren Scholarship is an initiative by the US Federal Government to increase the study of languages critical to U.S. interests by individuals committed to public service careers. The Boren Scholarship can be used to cover a variety of study abroad experiences where language learning is the focus. URGO and Study Abroad provide joint advising on this program and can assist any applicant in selecting a program and writing/editing application essays.

Scholarship amounts:
Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)
Up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks
Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

$30,000 Graduate School Scholarship for Public Service

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation provides merit-based scholarships to college students in their junior year who plan to pursue careers in public service. Truman Scholars receive up to $30,000 for graduate or professional school, participate in leadership development activities, and have special opportunities for internships and employment with the federal government.

Eligibility:
• Full-time junior-level student
• US citizen
• Extensive record of community and public service
• Planning a career in public service
• Outstanding leadership potential
• Strong academic record
• Nominated by Augsburg University to apply
• Must meet with Truman Campus Representative, Dixie Shafer (shafer@augsburg.edu), by Tuesday, November 21st

Public service is defined as employment in government at any level, uniformed services, public-interest organizations, non-governmental research and/or educational organizations, public and private schools, and public service-oriented nonprofit organizations such as those whose primary purposes are to help needy or disadvantaged persons or to protect the environment.

Call for Proposals Due 11/13: National Higher Education Teaching Conference

The Call for Proposals is currently open for the National Higher Education Teaching Conference (NHETC), set to take place in Minneapolis, MN, on June 13-14, 2024.

The 2024 NHETC will focus on three interconnected themes aimed at accelerating the student success movement in higher education:

1. Growing the Great Teaching Movement in the Classroom
2. Growing the Great Teaching Movement Campus-Wide
3. Growing the Great Teaching Movement across Higher Education

You can reference a list of suggested topics from the NHETC Programming Committee, though out-of-the-box thinking and innovative ideas that align with the overarching themes are also welcome and encouraged. Diverse perspectives and creative approaches are essential to driving meaningful change in higher education.

This is a unique opportunity to share your expertise, research, and experiences with a community of educators and thought leaders committed to enhancing teaching and learning in higher education. Your contribution can make a significant impact and help shape the future of student success within higher education.

¡Ándale! Improve Your Spanish Skills This Spring

Is it time to move your intermediate Spanish-speaking skills to a higher level? Are you looking for another course to add into your schedule? The Languages and Cross-Cultural Studies department invites you to consider taking Spa 212 for the Spring semester. Continuing your Spanish study is a powerful way to enhance your resume and make you a more viable job candidate in a market that is looking for global competence and multilingual skills.

SPA 212 is Intermediate Spanish, a 2nd yr. language course designed to continue building language skills while exploring cultures of the Spanish-speaking world and is intended for students who’ve completed Spanish 211 or the equivalent. Spa 212 meets on campus this spring: MWF 12:30-1:40. Students, faculty and staff are invited to register. Please spread the word to your Augsburg friends!

Come learn about Leadership Studies by taking LS 205 Introduction to Leadership Studies.
Whether or not you have formal leadership experience, this course will benefit all students by bringing out your strengths and opening doors to new opportunities. If you already see yourself as a leader, you will get stronger. If you do not see yourself as a leader, by the end of the program, you will discover that you have all it takes to be a leader!

This course is the introduction to the minor in Leadership Studies and helps build communication skills and cultural competency skills. Check it out! All are welcome to sign up for the course–Monday and Wednesday night 3:10-4:50.

Need an Augsburg Experience and want to work in the community? AIS 304 Engaging Community is the course for you.
This course connects your research interests and your desire to work with BIPOC communities, organizations, and neighborhoods in Minneapolis/St. Paul. During the semester you do research into an area you are passionate about and we partner with a number of organizations and communities in community-based learning. This type of learning provides students with the opportunity to connect their gifts, skills, and interests with an organization, group, or issue. Your work informs our classroom discussions and course work while also giving back to the community in valuable and reciprocal ways.
Course meets T-Th 9:40-11:20 and fulfills an Augsburg Experience

Applications Are Now Open for the PRISM Scholars Program

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2024 (graduating by May ‘26)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Tuesday, November 28th at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Wednesday, December 6th (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application).

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

My name is Dean Harris, and I am a doctoral student in the Clinical Psychology Department at Augsburg University. I am conducting this study as partial fulfillment of my doctoral degree, with Dr. Patricia Hopkins-Smith as my advisor.

You are being invited to participate in a research study on investigating influences of intrapersonal factors on the relationship between casual sex and mental health. Our study focuses on experiences of casual sex in individuals who identify as single or recently single (i.e., have not been in a relationship longer than one month). As such, if you indicated you were in a relationship for longer than one month, you do not meet our study eligibility criteria. We respect and appreciate individuals in various types of relationships, including open or ethically non-monogamous ones, but our current study’s scope is limited to investigating casual sex in those who identify as single (or recently single). If you agree to this study, I will ask you to complete a survey via Qualtrics. This survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. After completing all the survey questions, you will be invited, if you wish, to provide contact information to enter in the raffle to win one of three $50 gift card prizes, and/or emailed the results at the end of the study’s conclusion.

On Election Day, use #AuggiesVote or tag Augsburg on your social posts to spread the word! If you’re not able to vote in this election, we invite you to tag Augsburg with how you define civic engagement and what issues matter most to you.

2024 Open Enrollment Begins Today

Open Enrollment begins Monday, November 6 and continues through Monday, November 20. This is the only time of year outside of a qualifying life event when benefits-eligible employees may elect or change their benefit options, connect with the informative resources to help make the best decisions to meet their needs and enroll for the coming year.

During open enrollment, no action means no coverage. Employees who fail to act by November 20 will not have coverage effective January 1, 2024, and will need to wait until the next open enrollment period to elect coverage, unless a qualifying life event occurs. Your 2023 elections WILL NOT automatically carry over to 2024.

Augsburg First-Generation College Celebration (Nov. 6 – 9)

November 8 was selected as the date for the annual National First-Generation College Celebration to honor the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965. The HEA was passed to ensure that everyone has access to higher education, regardless of income. In recognition of First-Generation College Celebration Day, the departments of TRIO Student Support Services, TRIO McNair Scholars, and Multicultural Life will be hosting events that highlight the first-generation college experience during the week of November 6. These events are geared towards students but all are welcome to attend! Stop by any of these events to pick up a “Proud to Be First Gen” sticker and/or a “Proud to Support First-Generation Auggies” office placard.
