URGO Summer Research Phase 1 Applications Due February 17

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH/CREATIVE ACTIVITY PROGRAM: All disciplines welcome!
Phase 1 of the applications are due February 17th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research or creative activity is going on in your department!
The URGO Summer Research/Creative Activity Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 19th – August 1st) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.
URGO SUMMER RESEARCH/CREATIVE ACTIVITY ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Book Group: What Happened to You? Conversations on Trauma

Batalden Book Group: Staff and faculty are invited to read What Happened to You: Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing by B. Perry and O. Winfrey. Our in-person discussion will be held Tuesday, March 25th from 3:40 – 5:10 (snacks & beverages provided). Conversation guides are Prof. Mary Elise Lowe (Batalden scholar) and Ellie Olson (Director of AU’s CWC). Current AI Resources: Integration and Detection Workshop, February 12

Please join the eLearning team & CTL for a workshop on “Current AI Resources: Integration and Detection” on February 12, 12:30 to 1:30 pm. In this workshop, we will explore options in Moodle for tracking AI usage. We will also discuss how to integrate AI into assignments at various levels (from no AI use to full exploration of AI) and establish expectations for AI use in the classroom.

Moving from Inclusion to Equity: Counterstories of Collegiate Music Students and their Institution’s Stories in Dialogue

Universities and colleges often tell stories about the ways in which they have transformed in order to include and support diverse students. These stories are told through promotional and recruitment materials, values and mission statements, and university branding. It is well documented, however, that institutions maintain themselves, leaving the underlying structures of oppression and exclusion untouched (Ahmed, 2012).

Through this study, I examine the storied conflict between institutions and students, placing the lives of students in direct dialogue with the story of an institution. This study presents stories from multiple students, including those who are working to enact change at their institution. These stories are all being lived and told by students attending an institution that is striving to tell a story of growth and change. Examining these stories side by side, interweaving the stories of students with those of the institution, contributes to our understanding of the complex ways in which students experience equity and inequity, the complex ways in which institutions impact their experiences, and the complicated, untidy, messy work of striving toward equity when systems and structures tend to function “as usual” (Ahmed, 2017b).

BIPOC professors teaching within predominately White Faculty groups can experience isolation and marginal belonging. This doesn’t have to be the norm. Augsburg’s CGEE program offers an engaging and community-based summer experience with a focus on Spanish language and Mexican culture. Choose and/or combine courses from 3 1/2 week sessions.

All students earn the Global Competence Certificate (GCC) – a valuable addition to your resume – and can tailor their experience with specialized courses and internships in Spanish for Business, Spanish for Healthcare Professionals, Mexican Civilizations and Cultures, and Mexican Literature.

New Staff Position: Assistive Technology and Accommodations Specialist

Summary of Position

In collaboration with the Director and Disability Specialists, the Assistive Technology & Accommodations Specialist develops the strategic vision and oversees the implementation of accommodations for students with disabilities as well as supervises student employees within the department. They manage all aspects of assistive technology, alternative format textbooks and course materials, testing accommodations, and note taking. This position also works closely with the CLASS/Disability Resources Director to develop, implement and evaluate systems and processes that support the provision of accommodations. They are a subject matter expert and partner with campus stakeholders to consult on accessible web and information technology.

Primary Responsibilities

– Conduct Assistive Technology assessments with students and partner with them to implement, install, train, and follow up on recommendations.
– Facilitate and manage the production and evaluation of alternative format textbooks and course materials; receive requests; convert materials, work to ensure students receive materials in a timely manner; collaborate with bookstore and faculty.
– Facilitate and supervise provision of testing accommodations for students; schedule tests including proctors and assistive technology; proctor as necessary.
– Hire, train, and supervise student workers including test proctors, note takers, lab and office assistants; maintain work-study budget.
– Research, preview, evaluate, and purchase Assistive Technology.
– Budget oversight responsibilities for some restricted and/or endowed funds.
– Provide Web Accessibility guidance and consultation across campus.

Additional Responsibilities

– Maintain, track usage, upgrade, and replace Assistive technology resources as necessary.
– Monitor accommodation implementation systems and update as necessary.
– All other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor(s).

Work Environment and Physical Demands

– Typical work environment is an office. Sedentary work for long periods of time.
– Regular computer and phone use.

Hello, my name is Ashley Wurster and I am currently a clinical psychology doctoral student at Augsburg University. I am conducting a research study about how episode patterns in schizophrenia may affect stigmatization levels among mental health practitioners and the general public in Minnesota, and I would like to include you in my research. The study will be completed exclusively online and consist of a survey about your demographics and your experiences with and attitudes on schizophrenia/severe mental illnesses. Tian is Opening Next Week

Who owns history? And who is allowed to tell its stories? The student-written piece Tian centers around these fundamental questions. This conflict becomes clear when the audience is led through the life of romantic poet Karoline von Günderrode by two characters with two very different claims to Karoline’s story: Bettine von Arnim, contemporary and close friend of Karoline, who wants to paint a strong, feminist picture; and the Playwright whose goal is to create an enticing, heart-wrenching play. The audience finds themselves in the in-betweens of history, whilst being part of Karoline’s personal journey filled with struggles, doubt, and dreams.

The performance dates are the 13th, 14th, 15th of February at 7:00PM, and the 16th at 3:00pm.

Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives (MMIR) March | February 14 | 11 a.m.- 2 p.m

The annual Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives (MMIR) March will take place February 14 2025 from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. This march honors Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Men, Boys, Two-Spirit and LGBTQI+ Relatives. The march will begin at the Minneapolis American Indian Center and feature a variety of speakers from the community.

The 2025 MMIR March is a collaborative effort between the Minnesota Indian Women Sexual Assault Coalition, the Minneapolis American Indian Center, the Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center, the Indian Health Board of Minneapolis, the Native American Community Development Institute, Wakemup Productions, the Minnesota Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives Office, Minneapolis Public Schools American Indian Education, the Many Shields Society and the Little Earth Protectors.

Where Do We Go From Here, Chaos Or Community: A Public Reflection (Febrary 20, 4 p.m., East Commons)

In a spirit of community, compassion, and justice, and in the face of growing uncertainty in our world, the Augsburg community is invited to a student-led public reflection of Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community by the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The public reflection will take place on Thursday, February 20, in East Commons, beginning at 4pm. Hot chocolate will also be shared. This project is sponsored by the Pan Afrikan Student Services of Multicultural Life and the Department of Critical Race and Ethnicity Studies.
